Hi sorry for this noob question , but would like to know if thier is a way to have different tones for email notification and sms notification , this use to be a good feature in windows mobile
Custom SMS ringtone
I signed up here, just to answer your question
To get a custom ringtone for sms notifications, I did the following:
1. Get access to you sdcard (either by plugging it in usb to your computer, or installing ftpserver on device (i recommend SwiFTP)).
2. Get the mp3 you want as notification tone (which is what it's called).
3. Navigate to (or create) the /sdcard/media/notifications/ folder.
4. Put mp3 there.
5. Restart your phone (not 100% sure it's needed).
6. Go to settings -> Sound and display -> Notification ringtone, and select your file - it's probably in the bottom of the list
7. Enjoy!
8. ... let me know if it worked
To change the e-mail notification tone, I think you need to do that in the e-mail app itself - but not sure, since I haven't tried it ;-)

I prefer ringdroid, you can make a clip of the song you want and it's less manual. Set this as your default notification.
As far as email goes, it will default to what you've just set. There is an option within the settings menu (hit the home button within the client) and you can set this there (I think this wont override your other notification sound, I tested, but its 11pm here so I can't test the text message function to make sure that notification is still in tact. )
Thanks guys , will check these options and report

That´s right. There you can change the notification tone for the incoming mails and set it to vibrate or not too.

any body know a way to get my sounds ( mp3 files ) as notifercations ,
i would like to have my own text and email sounds !
i have tried by downlading a file explora program from the market but alas that dont work either
need help or ideas
create a folder called "notifications" in the root of your sd card, and place all the mp3's or wav in there and it should display when you select a sound in the notification settings.
thatnks for that ...
in the mean time i also found an app called tone picker that seems to work quite well

No problem mate.
Does that let you choose different tones for lets say both email and sms,
cause right now you I can only choose one for both.
i thought so at first but now it dont seem to ? i can have differnt tones for each email account but not a differnt one for sms ....
perhaps a folder is the way to go

If you go in to mail messages and settings and choose a notification there and do the same for sms they end up different. The personalise setting for notifications seems to change both together. Let me know if it works for you too or if its a gmail / sms only solution
The Hero has a 'default notification' sound. You can set this to whatever you want by putting your sound file in a /notifications folder on the SD. This sound file is the one used when you receive an email in the HTC email app, and also when you connect/disconnect USB etc...
You can change your SMS sound file by going into settings in the Messages app. You can change your Gmail email sound file by going into settings in the Google mail app. But currently you cannot have a custom sound file for the HTC email app without also having that sound file as the 'default notification' ie. your Hero will play the same sound when you get an email as it does when it dis/connects to USB. I find that a bit annoying but I'm sure it will be fixed in an update.
Sorry if this seems like a couple of daft questions but I can't seem to find them out myself.
1) Is there a way to make the notification sound different for a text and an email. Right now if I receive either I hear the same sound, with the number of emails I get a day I tend to ignore it which now results in my not seeing I have a text till a couple hours later.
2) Is there some way to see how many texts and calls I've made over a set period of time? All the phones I've had before would give totals for me which I could then reset but I can't find that in this phone. I've downloaded an app called Phonalyzr but it doesn't do what I'm really after.
on the first point, go to Messages, press Menu --> Settings --> Select ringtone
same for email
hmm i dont seem to be able to do that. When I change the notification sound in either the messaging app or the default phone settings it changes in both. I dont have the option to change it in mail (I use activesync btw).
Its very annoying to have the same sound for both.
The notification sound set in the main phone settings will be for anything on the phone that you haven't set a different one for.
If you then go to messages and in the first messages window with "compose message" at the top, press menu / settings /scroll down to notication setting and choose select sound - you can then choose a different sound for messages.
There's currently no option to choose a different sound for gmail or mail as far as I know.
Dayzee
but when i open my Gmail, Menu, Settings, i get the Choose Ringtone option....first is Default Ringtone, then others :/
You are right Suisen - Thanks - Meant the HTC Mail one, but of course you can change the gmail notify to a seperate one. I just not done it on my Hero.
With most progs, if the app itself allows you to select a sound it'll have its own, but if not, it plays the one you choose in main Phone settings.
Dayz
Cheers for that, now I know when to actually look at my phone when it makes a sounds
how do i change message ringtone to mp3? someone help me plssssssss!
hey
just put the .mp3 in the documents folder on your phone
you should have a My Documents\My Ringtones (preferred) or there is a Windows\Rings, either one will do.
then go to settings, sounds, notifications tab, from Event: drop down select Phone: Incoming call.

the Q is for atext message not an incoming call..
So this won't help.
As far as i now, you cannot use an mp3 for this.
change it into a WAV frmat and it will work.
it might be possible you need to put it in a special location (such as the windows folder or the my documents folder)
Yeah it's possible,
either do as gazzacbr said, but choose "Messaging: New text message" you can change almost all the phones sounds here...
I preffer this easier way (for me)
Slide to settings > Press Sounds > Scroll to bottom for "Notification Sounds" > Press the notification you want to change and select it off the list
If the mp3 isnt listed then use the FileManager, find your mp3 and hold down on it, when the menu appears scroll down to "Set as Ringtone" which actually just puts it in on the list of selectable tones. Then simply repeat the steps above.
- I should probably note, I downloaded an update off HTC's website that had something to do with MP3 ringtones but I could initially do this beforehand anyway.

I can't find it... can you please put it here?
He said he wants a mp3 to be used as a new text message tone. this is something even i wanted to ask, but well it cant be done. tried everything. the patch is for something else. tried putting it into my ring tones folder, tried putting the mp3 (a 26sec file) into windows ring folder but na nothing, restarted still nothing. the only thing i think will work is to try converting it into .wav format.
@rvrosa its there in touch2 support.
it can be done. i currently use a MP3 file as my SMS alert, and a different MP3 as my email alert.
If my previous technique doesnt work, copy the desired MP3 to the root of your microSD card. It will automatically list it in the selectable ringtones
under mobile device go into the folder that says application data then the folder that says sounds, put the mp3 in there and you should be able to select it for your sms.
A few months ago I moved from Windows Mobile 6.5 to Android. A feature I miss a bunch is the ability to have my scheduled tasks alert me. Using Android the task alert is the text message alert. I have been unable to find a way to make my tasks have a separate alert. Does anyone know of a way to do this? Thanks!
Are you referring to the notification ringtones? because you can change that through the settings in the calander app to make it something different than the default.

yes that is what I am referring to... however if I change the notification ring tone it changes the text message ring tone.
Tasks
I have all my schedules for work in my phone set up in my calander, since i also came from a Windows phone (Q9C) i was using outlook for all my apts. THere is a exchange program u can use thru google that will link the 2 and bring all your tasks into your new calander on your phone. U can then set each event to alert u a set time before, just like in WINM0b. I set mine up to alert me 1 hour before i work and if the phone is on silent, theres a icon on top left screen telling me theres a event. u can also set up sounds. I hope this helps, and hope the info helps u. I am running Dk28 Froyo and there are some differences, so if some of this makes no sense, thats prob the reason. the program thru google is google calander. seach for it, it works

When you change it through the calendar app, it only effects notifications from that app, the default notification ringtone will remain the same. Also, you can specify a specific notification ringtone through the messaging app, and gmail as well, and have them all be something different than the default notification ringtone that is set through the main settings->sound menu.
Open up the calendar app, hit the menu button, select settings, then change the ringtone for that app.
All my appointments are through google calender. I am running Froyo (Bonsai MOD). The one hour thing is what I have as well... the issue I am having is my text msg alert seems like it has to be the same as the task alert. I liked having my task alert long(like a ring tone) and I like having a short text msg alert.

wow... just wow. I really feel like a noob. It was so simple. Thanks!
You can also DL tone picker from the market. It will give you a few more selections when trying to change notification tones, including the use of music found on your SD card. Just a lil FYI if you're not too big on system tones only.

Thanks for the heads up however "Select music" is installed by default and will let you do the music from your SD card thing(all my ring tones are there)
You can also just create a directory on your sd card and place your audio files there. On your sd card, create a directory with folders as such
sdcard
|-media
--|-audio
----|-alarms
------|-random.mp3
------|-random.ogg
----|-notifications
------|-another.mp3
------|-another.aac
----|-ringtones
------|-you_get_the_picture.mp3
------|-insert_audio_file_here.wav
I apologize if this is not the correct forum/thread to post this . . .
I am trying to change the "ding" sound that FB Messenger plays everything a new message arrives but I haven't had any success. I have changed both the Notification Sound and Ringtone sound but it seems that these sounds are separate from where the "ding" notification from and I can't find the location where to change it. The smartphone is not rooted. I appreciate any assistance you can provide.
It's in the "Notifications & Sounds" settings under in the Messenger app.
The default notification sound is called "Messenger" -- change it to whatever you want.
This post (#3) and post #4 are Identical. as I accidentally posted it twice and am unable to delete this post. Please refer to post #4.

Got it! Thank you. I have downloaded and transferred couple of sounds file onto the Notification folder of the smartphone and have been able to select them as an option for other apps (facebook, instagram, etc.) but for some reason I don't see those as an option with FB Messenger. I tried placing it in other folders but had no luck. Is it a specific folder where I should place the file in order to see it as an option for FB Messenger?

I had the same problem. You have them in the right spot, but you need to give Messenger permission to access them.
I have a somewhat related question.. when a notification comes from, let's say, an sms app and I have my phone set to notify me every minute of unread notification, how do I make the sound of repeat notification the same as the the original notification of whatever notified me on the first place (in this case sms app)?

I'm not sure if this is related at all but either way, in order for these experts to help you, I think you need to be a bit more specific (at least for me to try to help ) such as what is the name of this sms app and an example of what you're trying to do exactly.

Okay so I have an SMS application called go SMS pro and I have a ring tone set for it through go SMS pro app. when I receive a text message that ring tone rings but when the notification keeps repeating the sound at this point is different , it's the default in the system instead of the one I set in the app. I hope that's a little bit more clear . I used to be able to set the ring tone for repeat notifications directly in the app but that was an older versions now I have to set it through my phone settings and that sound is different than the one set in go SMS pro. also the repeat notification sound that is set in my phone settings sounds for everything that gets repeated doesn't matter of the application. so I have different ring tones set for different applications but when that notification gets repeated it all defaults to just one ring tone stead of the ones I set for each application
