Root and OTA - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Hi,
im planning to root my OP5, but i have a question.
What happens to OTA's if i root the phone?
Do i keep getting OTA?
The phone updates itself even with TWRP ?
Kind regards

You'll continue to receive updates from the "check for updates" menu. However, it won't update like it does right now. When you click upgrade now, it'll just reboot your phone to recovery, which would be TWRP. You'll have to wipe dalvik and cache from there and then flash the update file from the install menu yourself. It's not that complicated tbh.
Good luck

You will need to install full zip for every update

In order to have root you will need to install Twrp to push Su which means removing the stock recovery needed to install updates(Another way is to boot into Twrp without removing stock recovery and flashing Su but there is no benefit in doing that, Twrp is nice to have). What will happen when you have Twrp installed is you will be notified of system updates but you won't be able to install them unless you restore the stock recovery back which is easy to do. Now you may ask if i restore the stock recovery and update will i lose Root?, yes you will and you will have to flash Su again with every update that's why there is no advantage in removing Twrp unless you want to update your system.
So in short you will have to root with every update whether there is stock recovery or Twrp.
Updates what updates never had one yet.

If you are on Marshmallow then their isn't one yet. But if you are on Lollipop it will depend on what region and country you are in. Some regions get faster updates than others but you can install them manually if you can find a rom compatible with you phone.

Remove root from the SU app go to settings and choose complete uninstall. Then make sure you have the stock recovery installed not twrp if you have it on you should be able to update after that. I recommend you reset the device before applying updates.

How to update once rooted?

I plan to get my OP5 today, and will update it before I root it, but I'm curious about future updates. Is my understanding correct that the OTA will fail, and the only way to upgrade is by waiting for the full stock ROMs to be posted here to flash in TWRP? From the previous phones, how long of a delay is there typically between an OTA and when we can flash it via TWRP? Does the full ROM that you flash also include the modem/radio files, or does that need to be flashed separately?
If you are stock and not rooted: updates come OTA as incremental updates. Small filesizes.
If you are stock and rooted: updates come OTA as FULL zips. Full ROM size. 4.5.2 for me was around 1.6GB in size.
Both will come through the official OTA mechanism. When the device reboots and installs, it runs on TWRP automatically without any manual user intervention.
tl;dr: Will still be OTA, but bigger filesizes. You will have to re-root (re flash SuperSU, Magisk, whatever)...

I'm stock and rooted, the OTA came as a 36MB update.
ota
I just rooted and wanted to update with OTA to 4.5.2, it rebooted into twrp and did something for a second and went back to the normal menu. I then rebooted and it told me that the update did not apply. I just flashed the 1.4 GB OTA and rooted over again, for the next update, do i have to wipe before i install the new OTA manually or can i just flash the never big version over without having to wipe it?
Do I have to flash TWRP for the OTAs to work once rooted? Or will they still install with stock recovery?
I rooted with "fastboot boot TWRP.img" instead of actually flashing TWRP to the system...
1. make backup
2. save it on your computer
3. flash latest TWRP - reset back to recovery
4. flash OOS 4.5.2 Full Rom Zip and SuperSU or Magisk
5. Wipe Dalvik & Cache
6. make new backup if everything works fine, so you have it just in case

If you are rooted, the phone automatically chooses to download the full OTA zip.
I want to root the phone and unlock bootloader. But firstly, i want to make backup all the settings/applications etc. How can i do that? I am full stock now
You can try Helium backup by clockworkmod. It is supposed to be basically a more friendly interface to `adb backup`.
For the record I couldn't get it to restore properly when I rooted my Shield TV, but I was probably doing something wrong.
I plan on rooting about to do it now. When another OTA update come along from above says I will get the full download but it will not erase any data or setting, right? Will be just full update but all will be intact?

As part of rooting, you will need to unlock your bootloader, which will wipe all data on the device. This is a one time thing.
After that, when you get OTAs, your data, apps, etc., will be intact, but it will overwrite several system partitions (that's why it's the larger download). So you will need to reinstall TWRP or whatever recovery, and reflash your root zip every time an OTA comes along.
If you have the space, it doesn't hurt to make a TWRP backup before installing the OTA.
Hope that all makes sense!

How to get OTA updates after rooting my device?

I own the 6GB Ram version of the phone and wants to root it so as to use Titanium backup to restore all the contents of my previous phone.
But the Problem is that we are still going to get some big OTA updates regarding camera and maybe more bug fixes.
I know the general procedure for rooting the device i.e. first unlock the bootloader then install a custom recovery then root.
I just wanted to ask if I just install back the stock recovery after rooting the device then will I get the Ota updates?
And I am sorry if any similar question has already been asked, I searched but didn't find any. Thanks

i assume you know how to get root ? unlock bootloader, flash twrp, install magisk or supersu ?
well from there its just the same.
getting ota updates see attachment.
after the update you are back to stock recovery without data lost.
so just flash twrp again and install root again, thats all.

1. Unlock Bootloader and Flash TWRP
2. Flash and Download APK Magisk 13.3 (Root + Pass SafetyNet)
3. If there is a new update go to OnePlus 5 Downloads
4. Boot into TWRP and Flash the new update.
5. Everytime you flash a new update you must also flash Magisk Root.
6. Done
Should we flash twrp recovery and root zip right away after flashing full ota package??

You don't have to flash twrp recovery again.
You can flash a root zip right after flashing the full OTA package

XT1687 running NPN25.137-83 - OTA update

Hey guys,
My G5+, which is running NPN25.137-83, rooted with Magisk, TWRP, Xposed just prompted me for an OTA update.
I'm guessing if i try to update i'll (best case scenario) break something, worst case brick my phone.
I'm running Aug2017 security patch.
This OTA update says it includes Security updates till Nov2017 + Stability improvements.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Do not apply the update, it will end up failing as you have TWRP installed, but every time you restart your phone, it will boot to TWRP and then you'll have to reboot from TWRP to bootloader and then system. Anyways, I recommend waiting until the OP of the TWRP flashable stock thread updates the links with that update and then flash the update via TWRP. Make sure you go into developer options and turn off automatic updates. You can also use an app to freeze Motorola update service if you don't want to be notified about the update.

Per the TWRP flashable stock thread guide, I downloaded the OTA and shared the zip there
Thanks @jeffsga88! I will disable automatic updates to avoid any accidents.

OTA install on rooted + TWRP G6

I tried to install the OTA Oreo update and of-course TWRP blocked it, I just rebooted back to system, phone is usable as before.
So is the only way to get the OTA to install to un-root and go back to stock recovery? Would I need to format partitions/lose data during the process? And would I then be able to re-root and TWRP or they are not available for the Oreo yet?
Tried to search for answers, apologize if I missed them.
Thanks
You have TWRP, just flash the V20a zip that's been out for weeks.

How in the world did you miss those countless threads and posts about Oreo update. You can install TWRP on Oreo, root is working as well but you won't be able to mount /data partition in TWRP after first reboot.

Saw many posts about the update but didn't find one related to installing an OTA update on a rooted phone with recovery. I could use the link of such a thread if you have it.
