In order to have root you will need to install Twrp to push Su which means removing the stock recovery needed to install updates(Another way is to boot into Twrp without removing stock recovery and flashing Su but there is no benefit in doing that, Twrp is nice to have). What will happen when you have Twrp installed is you will be notified of system updates but you won't be able to install them unless you restore the stock recovery back which is easy to do. Now you may ask if i restore the stock recovery and update will i lose Root?, yes you will and you will have to flash Su again with every update that's why there is no advantage in removing Twrp unless you want to update your system.
So in short you will have to root with every update whether there is stock recovery or Twrp.

Updates what updates never had one yet.

If you are on Marshmallow then their isn't one yet. But if you are on Lollipop it will depend on what region and country you are in. Some regions get faster updates than others but you can install them manually if you can find a rom compatible with you phone.

Remove root from the SU app go to settings and choose complete uninstall. Then make sure you have the stock recovery installed not twrp if you have it on you should be able to update after that. I recommend you reset the device before applying updates.

(INFO)After updating rooted .314 via OTA to .167 root stays(D6503, stock, locked BL)

My device is D6503. I had stock .314 rooted rom with locked bootloader. I updated via OTA to .167 and root remained except system partition write.
For this SuperSu was moved to system partition before update and also Survival mode was swithced on!
Another useful information is that if you do the SD Card fix on .314 it will remain after the update, so still all apps will be able to write on SD.
I was on Hungarian T-mobil .314 fw, unbranded phone.
UPDATE:
If you run the RIC killer from below, you will be able to mount system rw:
RIC killer
You lose no data during the update, even Xposed moduls works like before.
I thought this can be an useful information for everyone, if not moderators can delete the thread.
Which stock 314 firmware did you have before? Canada / USA stock 314 doesn't let you do ota, it forces you to use pcc for the update and you lose root.

Hungarian T-mobil, but the phone is unbranded. Also it is important to not have custom recovery installed, because then OTA won't install. You can only root if you want to be able to update via OTA in the future.

Hmm.. So flash a stock 314 fw (Hungarian tmobile confirmed) , root but don't install custom recovery, then do ota and it will preserve root? Can you install a custom recovery afterwards?

I'm not fully sure because you lose system partition write access after the OTA, so this have to be checked by someone. I don't install custom recovery because SD card fix and Xposed is all I need and I want to keep the possibility to use OTA updates in the future. I don't like when I have to reinstall everything and set my preferences again if I want to have a new fw with root, without exploit.
If someone checks this I will add the result to the first post.
Did anyone else duplicate this method?

I did another similar way: created my own personal rooted zip file and flashed. I loosed access to mount system..
Hope someone can fix it.

Yes someone in the thinktank thread did the same. So it seems like if you can do OTA and switch on Survival mode it works.
Yes you can, but you won't be able to mount r/w system untill devs find a kernel xploit to make it adbd insecure.
hi mates
more information would be of much more help, please :good:
ota marashmellow
I have rooted android 5.1.1, now I got 6.0 ota, can I update, is root preserved or I will lost my root after updating.
do not. two things can do, wait out root 6 and continue with 5.1.1 (root) or OTA update and lose root

OTA updates after root?

Hi, I have a european S8+ fully rooted and with TWRP.
Everything's working great so far but I read somewhere that I won't receive further OTA updates.
Can I install them manually with TWRP?
If yes, 3 questions:
1. Where can I get them?
2. Do I need every single update or are the newest update always containing the older updates as well?
3. Do I lose root or TWRP after installing an update?
I've rooted with Magisk by the way.
Typically if you're rooted and modified the system partition (BusyBox or twrp or whatever) the update will not install in stock recovery. Usually you have to unroot reinstall stock recovery and flash ota. There's toolkits out that can do that. Or you can just find an awesome rom like a rooted debloated rom thats just recently updated and just flash that. Or you can what till somebody snags the ota update location then posts that.

How to get OTA updates after rooting my device?

I own the 6GB Ram version of the phone and wants to root it so as to use Titanium backup to restore all the contents of my previous phone.
But the Problem is that we are still going to get some big OTA updates regarding camera and maybe more bug fixes.
I know the general procedure for rooting the device i.e. first unlock the bootloader then install a custom recovery then root.
I just wanted to ask if I just install back the stock recovery after rooting the device then will I get the Ota updates?
And I am sorry if any similar question has already been asked, I searched but didn't find any. Thanks

im using twrp and magisk for root. i still get OTA updates. but only the full updates, the 1,5 gb size
after that i need to flash twrp again and then install magisk again too.
but no data lost or anything so if you can live with that, its no biggy.

i assume you know how to get root ? unlock bootloader, flash twrp, install magisk or supersu ?
well from there its just the same.
getting ota updates see attachment.
after the update you are back to stock recovery without data lost.
so just flash twrp again and install root again, thats all.

1. Unlock Bootloader and Flash TWRP
2. Flash and Download APK Magisk 13.3 (Root + Pass SafetyNet)
3. If there is a new update go to OnePlus 5 Downloads
4. Boot into TWRP and Flash the new update.
5. Everytime you flash a new update you must also flash Magisk Root.
6. Done
Should we flash twrp recovery and root zip right away after flashing full ota package??

You don't have to flash twrp recovery again.
You can flash a root zip right after flashing the full OTA package

OTA update with Magisk

Hi guys! I'm on stock rom Nougat, since i installed magisk i'll always get error when i tried to update my phone from Update setting (samsung things...).
But when i installed Xposed and especially a module known as Firefds which set fake system status to "Official" (it was "Custom"), when i go back to check for a new update i found this (attachement).
So what do you think guys? Should i update? Maybe its November security patch...
But i don't want to lose twrp, magisk and all the stuff !!
This update didn't includes November patch so far I know. This will be listed in the patch notes for sure.
If you install the OTA update...this will end not well I think. You will running in an unstable system because of root, twrp etc. This update will replace files which are eventually needed and so on.
I suggest you flash stock rom with odin, then install the update then re-root and re-flash twrp. Yes it is annoying, but its better to be safe than sorry

What about flash this update using FlashFire and keep twrp & magisk? I saw it in many other phones

You can of course do so...but my experience is that such methods will not end well. Do it like @zzThrain wrote it and download firmware from SamMobile with DQJ3 and reflash twrp and re-root to be sure that your system don't come unstable.
Any chance for OTA updates with Magisk only (without Xposed, etc.)?
If there is no chance - is there a place to download only monthly security updates - since full firmware versions (found at sammobile) are at least 10x times larger than the monthly updates?

With TWRP you cannot install OTA, so in any case you would need to remove it.
Also i don't advise to make OTA on a rooted device, doesn't matter if it's Magisk or SuperSU
