When you call granny, does she keep saying "Huh?! Wut?!" or does the conversation flow pretty well? Rate this thread to express how you feel about the Samsung Galaxy S9's call quality. A higher rating indicates that calls are clear and crisp, and that regardless of background noise, you can hear the other party clearly (and with ample volume) and they can hear you.

Neither are active or even available as it's a sim free phone and those functions only work on a phone provided by the network

I had the same problem with my new S9 in Australia. While I was talking on a call minute or so it would go silent for the other party for about 6 seconds then come back. I had only had the phone for 5 days so took it back to Harvey Norman. After checking with their Samsung Franchisee, they exchanged the phone but only because it was less than 15 days from purchase. Still testing the replacement.

My wife and I each bought a new Samsung S9 phone on March 16 at an Xfinity Mobile store near Boston. Both phones were activated with new SIM cards. Both phones experience random "dead air" lasting from three to 10 seconds during a call. This is very annoying. We have turned off VoLTE calling and Global Networks in settings. No difference.
Now waiting for Samsung's firmware update and hoping this will fix the problem.

I have tried 3 Galaxy S9s over six weeks. All 3 have had multiple intermittent silences of about 6 seconds each during calls. I MAY have a workaround for Australians. I have changed service provider to Telstra (Instead of an Aldimobile) with VOLTE OFF for my SIM#.
On Day 2 with NO call drops or silences so far. SEEMS that the network Telstra rent to AldiMobile in Australia is incompatible with the Samsung Galaxy S9 as may be other networks reported:

I have not had any problems with calls on my S9 so far. I am on the MetroPCS network in the USA. MetroPCS uses the same network as TMobile.
Have had multiple 30 minute and longer phone calls without any dead air.

I'm using Samsung Galaxy S9 since last 3 weeks and still, I don't have any issue with this moible. Yes, call quality of that mobile is clear. I'm enjoying to use this mobile.
I've got mine for about a month and had serious problems with call quality. I could understand everyone perfectly but the other side sometimes wasn't even able to guess what I was saying. Problem got solved for me by disabling WiFi calling. After that calls are crystal clear at both sides.
I've a german SIM free phone (not bought at any provider) and was able to enable WiFi calling as well as VoLTE. Both were working. At least kind of... I'm on the latest software update right now and the bug still appears when I use WiFi calling. Maybe it is not the S9 which causes the problem but my WiFi at home. I couldn't test with another WiFi. Perhaps I'll find the time some day...

gets done automatically - you will hear the difference :-D
just to clear things up for everyone....
to use HD Voice and for it to work....
1. BOTH phones used for the call MUST have "HD Voice" (this specification will ONLY be on the phones spec on the orange website)
2. BOTH phones MUST be orange branded!
2. BOTH phones MUST have 3G signal at the time of placing the call....
if these conditions are met, the call will be in hd voice, (similar audio quality to viber). if the 3g signal drops on either handset, call quality will be reduced to standard...
currently, it only works with orange, its done with an enhanced version of the regular audio codec used for calls, which at the moment, is only implemented orange branded firmware on some handsets (although, its not just limited to android, it's actually a technology developed by nokia, and is on loads of phones, has been for years, on a variety of platforms!)
no1 else seemed to care much for HD voice, but recently, sprint in the USA started implementing it too, which should kickstart a trend, and in a couple of years, it might be more of a common thing.... x

Because carriers here typically have very cheap offers for unlimited calling and texting to subscribers of the same network while its relatively more expensive to make calls (and text to some extent though this isnt the case so much anymore with texting) to subscribers outside the network. (and there are basically two carriers only competing)

I noticed that Smart sells an S6 duos in which both SIM slots are locked to Smart. seems odd for anyone to have two SIMs from the same network carrier.
by the way, if you've experienced using the S6/edge, then the N5 (and possibly S6e+) will virtually feel the same in processing. but if you're doing some more heavy multitasking, then you may feel the difference the extra 1GB RAM of the N5 offers. the screen real estate is always appreciated, but handling of the overall phone might be a thing people actually consider more and so they may go for the physically smaller handset. I mean, there are actual iPhoners who think the iPhone 6 screen is too big, and miss the smaller screens.

for Calls, there's the option to select either SIM or both. but I don't seem to be able to dedicate any one SIM - they both just work anyway (as long as I have service).
for SMS & MMS you only have the option to select either/or.
for Data, one SIM is dedicated to 4G/3G/2G while the other SIM is limited to 2G. or you can just turn data for both SIMs off while talk and sms & mms are still in service.
when you're making a call, you have two call buttons - one for either SIM.

Preordered the Note 5 here in PH, haven't claimed it yet though.

Just learned that no 64GB available here and 32GB without SD Card for expansion is a serious drawback.
I can live with no IR and no removable battery but lack of SD Card, with all that 4K video recording and all, is really a tough pill to swallow.
Just my two cents.

the native app records 4K @ 48 Mbps. Camera Mod (for S6/e) bumps it up to 70 Mbps. well, Cinema 4K amazingly raises the bar to 200 Mbps.

Hi i just had my note 5 for about a week or so... its the dual version issued by globe philippines... i didnt notice anything wrong with the phone until i tried making calls. 1 out 10 tries pushed through.... so my first thought was to reboot my phone to fix it unfortunately it didnt. Then a text came through feom my friends tling me that they have been trying to call me and all they get is that im out of coverage when I'm just at home. By the way im connected to Lte when this happebed. So I tried to look for another way thought of changing the mobile network to 3g/2g. Calls started pouring in and out. It was fixed. But when I switch it again to LTE same thing happens all over again. Has anyone have the same problem?
Globe LTE doesn't support voice with data unlike with other carriers outside our country with VoLTE
Hello all, I purchased my Zuk Z1 about 3 weeks ago now and to be honest I regret buying the thing. The WiFi is poor and the phone is also missing Band 20 - 800 Mhz that is widely used in the UK.
Another problem I'm experiencing is making voice calls with network three. Whenever I make a call the quality is not very good and I seem to get a hissing noise as well. If someone rings me this doesn't happen?????
I've tried the three sim in my Nexus 4 and the call quailty is fine.
I've also got a Virgin sim in slot 2 but have no problems with that at all.
Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.
I really wish I'd just bought the Nexus 6P now.
Hi, I am also on 3 and have been using z1 for a week now, used in London and Midlands area.
I don't seem to be experiencing the problems you have, call quality seems good, wifi good and 4G coverage. Certainly no worse than my previous nexus 5 which was my main phone for 2 years.
I'm still somewhat confused by the band 20 stuff. The phone supports 800 MHz according to the specs. I know 3 is currently rolling out volte - is this what you mean?
I do have the same problem with my simcard...I'm using du simcard at united arab emirates..
My calls are the same on 3. No 4g either

IMHO the SM-G9750 (Hong Kong) is the best variant. Why? A number of reasons. There's very little Bloatware, works on all CDMA and GSM Networks, has Dual SIM's, Bootloader Unlocked and most importantly a Snapdragon SoC.
Mine is working great on US T- mobile out of the box. I have VoLTE, wifi calling and data speeds are great. Nice to actually have the best phone on the planet for once. Looking forward to root and adblocking!
I received the S10+ 128gb SM9750 from hong kong since last thursday. I couldnt be happier.
I plan to upgrade to 1TB sometime in April when the prices go down.
Best SoC, faster updates and a great network coverage.
If you have any questions, ask away.

I just put in the SIM card from my T-Mobile branded Galaxy S7. Apparently US carrier firmware is embedded and installed automatically depending on the SIM card. Pretty neat. My Samsung Pay is still the HK version but works fine. I'm missing tmo video calling, real time texting and advanced messaging though. Also phone does not support band 71.

VoLTE and wifi calling on TMo work great, but I've found the phone is not configured for carrier aggregation, which negatively affects download speeds. Oddly enough, upload speeds are generally great. I got the the phone on eBay from seller "never-msrp"

As an example, from home my S7 (with CA) generally downloads @ ~75 Mbps, and the S10+ is around 35. Samsung pay works fine but is Hong Kong version (Chinese ads etc.) Band 71 (600 MHz) is generally used in rural areas but is likely to become more important in cities in the next few years.

I checked from the service menu (*#0011#) while doing a speed test and it's definitely not doing CA. I've watched it happen from there on my S7.
What's annoying is that it initially spikes to ~55 and then backs down steadily, like it's being throttled, or waiting for another tower to pick up the slack or something. Upload is the opposite, it starts slow and steadily climbs, almost always to a higher number than the download.
I'm in Manhattan and mostly have excellent coverage except for the 1928 building I work in that's built like a brick ****house. Wifi and HD calling are a must there. The signal repeaters are always on the fritz in my part of the building.

No call recording option. Also, the camera shutter sound can't be turned off because of HK upskirt laws. But if you put the phone on silent you won't hear it. Also in order to get the VoLTE and wifi calling status bar icons you need to pull down the status bar, hit the three dots and select button order. These features are apparently installed after you put the sim in. I didn't notice the wifi calling one before, but it's there. Enjoy your phones, they are truly amazing

That would be the exynos model your after then it has volte ,wifi calling out of the box...plus it has a much better single core than the sd 855 and faster updates seems to be more battery friendly to as i also get 8-9 hours sot... exynos is allot more powerful ...qualcomm payout more cash to make the sd 855 sound more better
Is anyone else noticing the caller ID and spam protection setting turning itself off?
it's very annoying anyone solved the problem?
just tried clearing the data for the hiya system app will update if this seems to clear the problem
Just noticed it after seeing your thread, mine was turned off as well. I remember turning it on couple of days ago. Perhaps it might be controlled by the carrier end ?

Yes, noticed it a while back and I have the same speculation that it's being turned off by carrier settings even though I bought the unbranded unlocked model. I'm on T-Mobile.

Same issue here as well. It was the same way on my s8 plus with the pie beta. Both are unlocked devices running on cricket. I've noticed it everytime after a restart. I think that's where the bug is at unfortunately.
Same
Lol just checked mine after reading this, and mine is off too. Mines bought direct from Vodafone UK . Wow I know I switched it on its one of the first things I set up.

I've noticed mine off, but additionally I haven't noticed it doing anything when I get a call. On the unlocked S9, it would provide basic caller info and possible spam warnings. Now I get nothing if the number is not in my contact list. I'm running a factory unlocked s10+ on Sprint. No Hiya installed.
Yup can confirm mine shut off itself after I turned it on during initial setup, unlocked galaxy s10+ on Verizon

Something I have noticed is that after turning it back on and receiving some calls from unknown callers it has remained turned on, usually the setting just turns back off a few times a day.

Is there anyway to enable this on tmobile branded s10+?
Or only on the U1 unlocked firmware?

I think T-Mobile disables this feature on their variant. You can get it by flashing the U1 firmware tho.

Anyone figure out how to keep it from disabling?
Nope, still happening to me on my unlocked...
I can confirm the March update fixed the problem for me. Exynos UK Vodafone.

And our unlocked Snapdragons are still the red headed stepchildren with no update.
The pop-up came some days ago but I didn't turn it on because of :
- if the call isn't from one of ùy contacts, it is masked or unknown, and I know what to do about the former.. not answering.
- As it is obviously a samsuing service, I don't see the point of putting myself more in the hands of a conglomerate than I'm already and I don't see how reliable might be the said service, considering that the official callers black list is a mess here in france (I let you decide for you guys in your respective countries).
My point is : are we SO busy, SO amateur, SO lazy and SO mobile enslaved to jump on every notification from our devices ?
can someone point out where this setting is? I searched for call, caller, and spam in settings to no avail.

Open the Phone App, tap on the 3 dots on the search bar and then open settings. If it isn't there then its disabled by your carrier if you have a carrier branded phone.

give the man a cigar, verizon calls it caller name ID, but the real head trip is that their customer service people typically don't know it exists until you explain it functions like the old landline automatic caller ID, it costs $2.99/mo, but i've had it literally ever since i bought the moto z and it still mostly worked on the s10+ to this day, i love having it too, people call at random i answer "hi steve, don't spam me again you prick" and hang up, dude calls back later freaked out i knew his name already, worth the $2.99 easy for the giggles.

Well, everyone is different. In my case I also prefer not to pick up when a number is blocked or the nr is not in my contact list. However, I regularly get calls from Dr's, hospitals or other people related to the care of my parents, so I like the opportunity to be able to distinguish one of those calls with that of a recruiter or some company that wants to sell me something.
