Can I revert knox after root? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello,
I know that if I root my s8 I will lost knox services, but if I reset my phone to factory can knox be restored too?

never, knox is a literal fuse in your phone, and when it blows, its gone, no way of getting back, EVER

Knox triggers an e-fuse which permanently burns a block in memory which is irreversible

Which phone do you have?
It matters because rooting your phone does not trigger the knox counter at all. Tools like cf auto root flash modified boot images to install root, and it is only that action alone that causes knox to increment.
The north american g95(0|5)(u|w) phones have locked bootloaders making knox increments impossible and they have had root since August of last year.

there are some methods which enable root in a light version! it's just without twrp or custom roms... but still stock rom with root. Sometimes that enough fo some people that only need a certain aspect of being rooted.
but to answer ops question. NO there is not going back unless you have a time machine which u can use and tell ur past self not to root.

False. Modifying boot.img trjggers knox counter. If you root without changing kernel or root filesystem, knox is not triggered. Every single snapdragon based samsung s8 and s7 and note8 and many more, every rooted Samsung with a locked bootloader that is rooted has 0x0 knox counter.
See for yourself.

Please do not spread misinformation. It is difficult enough convincing people who are used to exynos devices that rooting is safe on knox counter with locked bootloader device.

You knox status is still 0x1, you are just running a kernel that ignores it in favor of a fake 0x0. If you flash stock kernel you will see 0x1 again.
Can you run samsung pay? Or secure folder?

Guys, the Snapdragon root method (SamPWND) does NOT trip Knox. But it's a limited root method as I think it uses an eng boot image, and the bootloader is still locked, so you can't flash custom ROMs or anything like that.
But yes, all true root methods do trip Knox. The ROMs may show it as being 0x0, but that's easy to spoof in software. As others have said, boot into Recovery and you'll see the true KNox status which cannot be spoofed

KNOX FREE pre-rooted stock firmware

What does Knox Free mean in pre-rooted firmwares when they also say:
Attention Your KNOX WARRANTY VOID will be set to 0x1!! Think TWICE before flashing!!! ?
It means the built in knox software is removed from the rom.
But it will still void your warranty upon flashing.

that the App Knox and all related stuff will be removed from the rom. But KNOX has also an efuse (or most people think it is an efuse), which means if it detects a change of the bootloader and the flag goes from 0x0 to 0x1 (which you can see in the recovery mode) in which case you voit the warrant.
At the moment there is no known way to reset this.
So why don't keep Knox software?

Its not the app or software within the rom that triggers the flag, its the change in the bootloader which has to be done in order to root your device. So whether you keep the apps or not, when you root, its over. Im not even sure if knox (the app) can be used after the flag is triggered

Knox warranty status is different to knox software in the rom.
The warranty status changes from 0x0 to 0x1 upon flashing anything in download mode.
The Knox built in software adds complications to things such as rooting and installing/restoring apps not from play store. By removing built in knox apps, these apps work.

So there won't be any complications with flashing custom roms, we'll just lose KNOX and Warranty status? Correct? I have insurance, I'm not too worried about losing the warranty on my device, I just want root and the ability to flash custom roms with bloatware removed.

You don't want the software because it does not play well with apps that require root or with restored apps. It's more of a pain. When I get my n3 I'm Def flashing a rom without knox just because the problems it's been causing on rooted phones.

Does this mean if I restore using Titanium on a rooted phone some of the Apps. wont work?
Also is Knox the reson for the locked Bootloader? or is that completely different?
By flashing a ROM without Knox does this "unlock" the bootloader?

You can use titanium but you will have to run a script after to stop the apps from force closing. Someone sent the fix to the app devs do they can fix it. I would really wait until tb has an update that fixes the restore problem.
And knox is a system underneath android that provides security. It doesn't cause the boot loader to be locked but just adds another annoyance after you unlock the bootloader. And in order to flash a rom you need to install a custom recovery which cannot be done on a locked bootloader. Hope I said it clear enough think of knox as a pissed off antivirus that will not let you install and blocks half of the stuff from running properly.

No it will not kill your phone.
That part of knox is an app for security like any other app.
The knox warranty is only visible in download mode.
Some are reporting that there is no Knox flag on the 900 version. Basically the exynos version.
Also if it's a system app from Samsung you cannot delete unless you have root. You can only hide it and uninstall the updates to those apps!

You can root without harming the phone easily but you could void warranty. I am not sure that not having a visible knox counter in N900 means there isn't a hidden one.

AFAIK there is no way of rooting without tripping the Knox counter.

[Q] Using MJA (unrooted) and want to use Knox, but can't find it

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to use Samsung Knox to set up a container for my work email, but I'm unable to find Knox anywhere in my app drawer. I can see it listed in the Application Manager, but there's no way to launch it.
I'm running the MJA 4.3 update, fully stock, unrooted. This is what my download screen looks like:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SPH-L720
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
KNOX KERNEL LOCK: 0x0
KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0x0
CSB-CONFIG-LSB: 0x30
WRITE PROTECTION: Enable
eMMC BURST MODE enabled
On the About device screen, the Software version, Baseband version, and Build number all end in "MJA". The SELinux status is "Enforcing SEPF_SPH-L720_4.3_0010".
Is there something else that I need to do to enable Knox? I've searched the web and can only find screenshots of the Knox app showing up on a Samsung Galaxy Note 3. I've read plenty of posts saying that Knox is now fully enabled in the 4.3 update, but I haven't found anyone saying that they can't get it to work on a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 (just that they want to get rid of it).
Any insight would be greatly appreciated, as this is the only reason that I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to MJA. My work requires an 8-digit passcode for security and will soon be requiring storage to be fully encrypted, and I'm really tired of having to punch in my code any time I want to use my phone.
Thanks,
-Tony

Thank you, leaderbuilder! I was able to get Knox working using the APK that you linked above. I had to enable installation from Unknown sources, download the APK to my phone, and install it. The APK is apparently just a stub to download the full Knox suite (160+ MB). The Knox installation went smoothly and it asked me for a lock timeout period and a password.
Knox works as well as I could have hoped! I can set whatever security I want on my phone (or none), and it only asks me for a password when I want to jump into the Knox container. My only complaint is that I haven't yet figured out a way to use the Google Keyboard in Knox. When I try to type in Knox using the Google Keyboard, my keypresses don't show up. I have to switch inputs to the Samsung Keyboard, and then I can type. I'm guessing Samsung would have to repackage the Google Keyboard as a Knox app and offer it up in their Knox App store that's available inside Knox.
On a side note, I first checked my Device Administrators (referring to the first link you posted above), but the entry for Knox was unchecked and disabled (I couldn't check it). After installing Knox, it's still disabled, but it is checked now:

Glad to hear it worked.
I'm really appreciative of you posting back your results. We need more people to do that to contribute to the community and help out.
I'm sure as more of my clients get the updated firmware on their corporate phones I'll be seeing and doing more of this. Think next week I'll grab a colleagues phone and start messing with it myself. Curious if it'll work on rooted device(s)

No, as far as i know you can not install knox when the knox flag is 1 (which makes sense since knox would be pretty useless if you can install a custom kernel from where you can read anywhere in memory).

Should have thought of that before tripping the flag then really, If you had read properly before tripping you would have known this.

I wasn't criticising. I was stating a FACT. And highlighting that your own error of not reading enough about this has actually came back to haunt you.
The chances of a KNOX 0x0 after it being 0X1 which you have is Slim to NON Existent. Only way is to replace the Motherboard on your phone.

Base of a lot of articles I have read, there is a high possibly that Knox is a efuse, the chance of getting it back to 0x0 is near impossible as once the efuse is tripped, it is basically burned. The only way is to either replace the chip on the fuse or the whole board.

There's been a lot of very clever Dev-types working on this issue with no luck so far. These are the guys who got around the Knox issue initially via scripting and others who have been programming Android for years. Radicalisto doesn't have to be Samsung to say what s/he is saying, it's just a very good bet that s/he is right.
And yes, maybe someone in Samsung will leak the truth and we find a way to reverse the Knox, but betting on it right now is like betting a 2-legged horse will win the Melbourne Cup.
And I also wouldn't be too sure nobody would want a phone with Knox tripped - some of the custom ROM's make the stock ROM's look sick in comparison, both in speed and battery. In all this fuss I have yet to hear of a single person who wants Knox - anyone knowing of a post from someone who thinks it is worth having, please point it out.
Samsung made a business decision and has put offside almost all their customer base - about the only ones not pissed are those who never touch their phones, and even they aren't using Knox containers. And I haven't heard of any businesses setting up their servers to run containerised phone either. Blackberry did well because RIM did the work for businesses.
It's just a matter of reading up on things until you understand the risks, rather than seeing the 'Ooh Shiny!' and jumping in head first.
Nobody gives a damn about knox. For the common people, its there for warranty, other than that, nobody looking for 2nd hand note3 will specifically want a knox 0x0 unit.
