Why? Why not ?
Turns out the buttons are not really attached to anything. Pulled it out, removed the black coating. Used red touch up paint and Walla

A small piece of plastic and a drop of super glue. Put it on there, let it dry then pull it out. Yeah I pretty much committed before I knew what to expect lol

I didn't even have to do that. Just used my thumb nail under the bottom and it came right out
Did mine. Let's see how long it last but it looks really good.
Looks good but no way I'd rock this thing without a case.
Even with cases I can destroy phones with my Butterfingers, lol.
Wait, so you literally just pulled the button off and then had no issues popping it back into position? Nothing broke?
If it's really that easy, that means we could buy a spare colored button from a parts site, like the orange button from the Clearly White variant or the green button from the Kinda Blue variant and pop it on.
How has this not been discovered, previously?

That's correct. I put my thumb nail under the bottom of the button and it popped right out. If you do it make sure your over a table. I didn't expect it to be so easy and it went flying. Almost lost it.
The button it's self looks like it's made out of metal but the back looks like plastic. I had a little bit of a hard time getting it back in but not overly hard. Don't think it matters which way is up

Maybe that's why I had trouble. Just thought it was my fat fingers trying to mess with a tiny button. The first time I put it in it didn't go in right so I pulled it out and dropped it. The second time went right in.

yeah i have had mine almost a week now i noticed it after i removed that plastic screen thing that was on the back of the screen.
it seems kinda cheap feeling when i push down on the screen and i hear it sweak and move every time. should i take it back?
Mine started sqeaking and creaking today. NOOOOO!
I only had it for 2 days. I kept the plastic on the back of the screen and it still does this by the way. Its too awesome of a phone for this litte stuff to bother me though. I came from a Touch Dual that had a solid keyboard for a little over a year before it became wobbly and squeky before it final died. So I imagine its better sooner than latter cause you just adapt the longer you use it.
My 2 Cents,
Jcostanza4
I had the same problem the first day I got mine. I'm still trying to figure out a way to keep it from squeaking/creaking. Honestly it's just annoying right now. My TYTN II was a brick compared to this phone as far as size and weight. If I figure anything out I'll post it up.
The only idea I've had so far is to take one of my old Palm screen shields and use it on the back of the screen. However since I ordered a Zagg full body protector I think I actually might get that piece with the set. Like I said I'll post up when I got more info.
try adding a little strip of adhesive felt to the upper part of the chin (where it meets the screen when closed). Works for me. Actually, if you want to test this out or cant find the felt, take three post it notes(together for the right thickness), cut them down, black out with a magic marker, and you'll get the same effect. Barely noticable.
yes mines loose too you feel it when you only hold the bottom and tap the screen u here the screen and the body click.

Maybe you're pressing too hard? Mine creaks if I really press down hard.
On my wing, I had to press down hard, it's built for a stylus.
But this device is built for your fingers, and should respond with a very light touch. Try using it with barely touching it, if it doesn't respond try pressing a tiny bit harder, you should not have to push down hard enough to make the screen creak -- unless the screen is badly attached, in which case I would take it back to the store.
this is what happens when HTC wants a thin, light phone with a hardware qwerty
it doesnt bother me much though
So the paint problem on my power button got worse after i picked at with my finger nail ONCE just curious on the construction like a RETARD.
what followed was a week of pain and humiliation. The paint started coming off slowly leaving my hand looking like i was touching glitter, It was like a flesh eating virus, the glitter continued and button started looking worse and worse so i decided Saturday that i would end this once and for all, i got out nail polish remover, a magic eraser, and a microfiber cloth and the result is a BARE bright RED power button that is visible from 20 feet away and looks absolutely horrible. What i also didn't expect that the nail polish remover also took some of the paint off the area around the button and off the side of the phone.
The end result is that my phone is now an embarrassment, fully functional, the rest of the phone is in perfect shape but no matter how well i keep care of it now it will still have a huge red button visible from 20 feet away.
*sigh*
looks pretty cool
Bust out a silver sharpie and give it a quick paint job.
Note to self: "Keep phone away from nail polish remover." I have a slight bubble developing on my End button. I'm hoping I don't have to scrape everything off. On the other hand you could go ahead and scrape off the paint on the Call button and have a nice Christmasy-looking phone. LOL
is this a good enough excuse to get an EVO the day it comes out?

Duck tape fixes everything!!
Get small piece and stick it over the button.. Or take phone apart, rap duck tape around it.. In the process, dont break phone so you wont have to duck tape the entire thing together.
mine looks exactly the same dude.. :/
my back button even is starting to peel
I am afraid that if i start experimenting with paint and glue that my hero will end up out my apartment window.
no matter what i do it is always going to look bad, but seriously i need to make this less obvious.
did i mention that when the back light is lit on it, it is bright as hell too.

Take it to sprint and say the paint just wore away. You are a heavy phone user and you dont like how this happened. Ask what you options are and say you would like to get the buttons replaced. They do the work for free if you are insured.
It's a nice pic nonetheless.
it looks like t-1000

Mine just started peeling off last week. Not a heavy phone user, but regardless, the End Key is now peeling . I have insurance, so I'm debating on whether to take it in or not. If they can just fix the button, great. If not, well, we'll see. That and I'd likely have to RUU before taking it in (unless I just leave it powered off .)
Get some silver nail vanish and reverse the issue
Scratch everything off both the call and end buttons and just pretend it's supposed to be that way. That works for me, but I know it would bug some people.

That's what I did. It really does not bother me. At least I don't have the dust issue. I don't trust a sprint tech taking my phone apart for those two buttons. It really looks alright when both buttons are missing the paint.
my phone end button is peel off too. I guess phone was never meant for moderate to heavey usage for end button imho.

At 1st I was horribly upset that I had to carefully scrape the paint off of the button. But it grew on me over time & I can use the phone without graying hairs over paint peel.
on mine is the power button and the return button too sprint said that they can send me another one phone
Same thing here mine looks exactly like urs :/ Anthink i,m goign tto try and mask it off and get some hobby paint..idk what color thou
I completely peeled my power button months ago. It's red, I'm over it.
The "back" button has been doing the same thing. The little back arrow is a blob of naked plastic now. I don't care since I'm getting an EVO.
There are threads at Sprint and other Hero forums where people have been trying to get Sprint or HTC to replace the phone because of this. I think only one person got lucky and was given a new phone.
not really a big deal, but.. why is the menu button 'mEnu'. perhaps the cost of capital E's was down that day they made the template?
Ha-ha.... I would've never noticed if you didn't say anything... but yeah, it looks weird.
Yeah, it sucks. And the stupid "chimney" on the home button pisses me off too. It looks more like a problem then design... like a line of the black part got scraped off.
...and the curvy arrow.
...and the cut in the magnifying glass.
Who ever designed those bottom buttons should be fired! Actually I take that back... whoever approved the design for those bottom buttons should be fired!!!

haha yeah.. the buttons are all kinda strange, now im looking at that chimney...
whats weird is i looked at an evo, and well it had mEnu also. seems... odd
mEnu
The capitol E on the mEnu button goes all the way back to the original mytouch. I never noticed it until a customer pointed it out on the huge in store poster right behind me.
haha, i've never would've noticed any of these things if you guys hadn't pointed them out. I actually like the curvy arrow, cut in the magnifying glass and the chimney. Only thing that looks weird, or out of place, is the mEnu button.
The E has to be like that because the letters are cut outs and the lower case e would leave that little bit inside the semi-circle cut off and so it wouldn't work. I didn't notice this til this post and it was driving me a little nuts but now I think what I said is reasonable. I rather like it anyway.

Damn you, curvy arrow! ::shakes fist::
conscious design choice
It might be weird, but the mEnu capitalization is a conscious choice; an homage to the hTc logo.
I love my phone, but one of my least favorite things about it: The typography.
The T-Mobile logo is chrome on black. The four buttons are white/backlit on black. The Google logo is white on grey, and the hTc / G2 logos are cutouts on silver.
No consistency in sizing, fonts, colors or materials.
Of course, these are tiny details, and overall it's a wonderful device.
hTc.... makes sense
I didn't notice it because it looks like how I write those letters. I make an uppercase m look like a big lower case m, same with the u.
Get a hobby people. Please shut this down.

I rEally don't know what you'rE all talking about. Or is it just mE.
Yes, the whole reason I noticed the E was because it looked yellow while the m, nu, and the rest of the buttons were white.
Glad to know I'm not the only person who notices strange things like an E!

I had a heck of a time with my Vibrant and a creaky bezel and am pretty happy with the solid construction of the NS so far.
Do me a favor and tap around your bezel with your finger and tell me if you get a different pitched sound from the area around the power button than from the rest of the bezel. I am just curious if that is normal or if I have a bezel that will eventually get loose over time.
Thanks!
My bezzle near the power button is fine, however, I can hear a click and creaking from the bottom of the phone, next to the USB port, opposite side of the headphone jack. Whenever I press down lightly (like if I were to pick up the phone holding the top and bottom) I can create the sound.
Bummer.

Nitpicky? I just spent $529 + tax, I would like to be sure I don't have a hardware problem. I had a slight issue like this with my Vibrant that turned into a larger problem later. I am simply trying to nip it in the bud.
Thanks for the constructive feedback!

same issue on mine. It turns out that it's just the battery cover, not the actual bottom bezel. When I remove the cover, no creakiness anymore. only option really is to buy a new battery cover when they appear online and see if it still creaks.

Sorry man! I spent the same amount of money too and I don't have this problem! If it doesn't meet your standards then by all means take it back!
I found the issue. The black bezel does in fact move independently of the inside plastic body/structure. It actually moved when pressed on but so little you would not think so. I took the battery cover off and looked and it presses in until it contacts the interior area giving it a place to push against.
I pick up my friends iPhone 4 and realize there is a company who makes quality products!
Yeah, I've got the creak on the bottom of mine as well. It's honestly not something that I'm all that worried about. That's the location that I most usually have a finger there, supporting the device, so I figure that with use it's going to start seeing some kind of wear.
Now, if the screen were to have had some issues, then that would be something different.
I get the creak at the bottom where the USB port is but I also get a creak when I touch the upper right hand corner near the front facing camera. It kind of feels like I'm pushing the corner in.

but i swear one corner of my power button is starting to peel. one corner (botton right) looks like its starting to peel up. maybe im trippin'. im bout ready to bust out a magnifying glass and look at this thing (as soon as i can find one)
I can't see anything, but I have the feeling that my power button gets worn out from pressing. I don't know if I just became used to press the button or if it becomes easier to press, means I need less pressure almost like the spring is wearing out.

lol! yeah thats my favorite. "how the hell do you turn it on?!! oh" "how the hell do you unlock it??!!! oh" --- MY phone *****!
But to the OP, yeah I notice my top left corner has a slight gap but isn't pealing.
To the above two posts, yes, the button on my atrix and my room mates have broken in since we got them a week ago. At first we were both pissed off because we couldn't turn the **** on. Now its almost tolerable although I would still appreciate an extra 1/2mm of button.
Also, my finger print reader area already looks 'worn.' We'll see how well it holds up. Always have that 1 year warranty and if it does break from normal use, you can always talk to ATT and have them give you a different phone...
