[GUIDE] [FIX] [SnapDragon] extractTarFork no IMEI after TWRP restore - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Guides, News, & Discussion

Good moment, guys.
A few hour ago I had lost my IMEI/wifi/sim/Bluetooth cause an error in TWRP restoration. I see 4 threads with the same problem; this is what I make to fix my problem.
Why it happens?
I don't know.
How to fix?
I don't know, but this procedure works to me.
0 - I had a full backup of my previous ROM in my SD
1 - Decrypted my phone.
Go to Wipe > Format data > yes. Some error appears, just reboot to TWRP.
2 - Now I wipe everything. System / data / cache / dalvik
3 - Go to restore, select all, EXCEPT firmware. Restore and boot
4 - Return to TWRP. Now flash this firmware and lazyflasher
5 - reboot and all that sh*t works again BUT you will not be able to unlock.
Reboot to twrp, mount system partition. Go to advanced > file mananger > data/system delete this files (if exist)
password.key
pattern.key
locksettings.db-wal
locksettings.db-shm
locksettings.db

Thank you
Do you know if that is the latest firmware version? for the SD NOTE 4 model?

you're safe my days bro, thank you so much

bri u save my phone bro ...one problem i faced in twrp i cant mount system ..and my internal storage is showing 0mb..plz help

if you have lost the IMEI/wifi/sim/Bluetooth , then the error must ve occured while restoring the firmware partition
just flash the firmware zip (step 4) ---- no need to format everything

Use redwolf or orangefox twrp for not facing these issues

Thats actually not an exact fix.... I have faced this problem and its consequence errors which you guys still might not have faced. I've done a lot of searching about this, but, nothing lead me to a solution. I've asked many developers and senior members on MIUI Forum and XDA as well, but, none could help. All of this **** happened more than 16 months back.
During that time, REDWOLF Recovery was in their initial stages and they have later added a fix to this exfat errors in their later releases and BOOM it works great. So, skipping the firmware partition during backup and restore and all then flashing lazyflasher are not required. Just go for REDWOLF Recovery or OrangeFox Recovery, they have this fix and also no need to flash lazyflasher during any flashing processes also, everything is inbuilt in those TWRPs.
RedWolf Recovery : https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...t/recovery-red-wolf-recovery-project-t3653704
OrangeFox Recovery : https://forum.xda-developers.com/re.../recovery-orangefox-recovery-project-t3775933

I already deleted my backup =( what should I do?
When I restored that backup long ago,my SIM wont read, wifi wont connect and there was no IMEI.I was able to fix the SIM and Wifi issue by flashing a firmware however the IMEI was still gone.I am still able to make text message and contact my operator despite the loss of IMEI,everything works normal.I want to flash MIUI ROMs and it wont let me through the set-up because the MI verification step requires IMEI.

I have the same issue. When I restored a backup, my IMEI and baseband was gone. I can't connect to wifi, data and bluetooth.
I reflashed the stock ROM and latest firmware. Everything went back to normal. I can already connect to wifi, mobile data and bluetooth but my IMEI was gone. Although, I can still send and receive texts and calls, it was not really a big deal for me.

Help needed! Firmeware CAN-L11 EU Version

Hello,
i need help. I messed up my phone while trying to repair my only read mode system partition after boot.
Current state:
Phone CAN-L11 with EU Firmeware and working TWRP Recovery.
I did a full wipe, but have no data partition to restore, because this couldn´t be saved with twrp while i made my first nand backups during no read access to data partition.
My phone always shows 2 times the huawei logo and then boot in erecovery from huawei where i tried to restore, but it shows always "fail to get data" (wifi works).
When i restore all partitions backups that i own via twrp i miss the data partition (is the cause why it wont boot - isn´t it?)
Now i searched for any img that i can use to get my phone working again - anyone has a tip what img i could use (i have a huawei update extractor) - through twrp or fastboot.
Could anyone help me with a twrp backup or a img file of data partition - or has another tip how to get my phone working again?
Thanks for tips!

I think that you need a system.img, so you can flash. This system imagem would write everything you need, so you can boot normally.
Have you tried to dowload @bluesmoothie backup from dropbox from the Root and Recovery post?
Here is the link, in case you don't find it https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qrk0fbpn5rnukxn/AAAmhFwBTNoqq0sWfCH-VMHLa?dl=0

Here the full Backup for the CAN-L11:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B134drJ4-Ed0R3VSY3A5NGpjVWc
Format /data, reboot recovery and than restore from backup. After the restore is complete make a wipe.
I restored my system from twrp (original first save). But that did not help.
After that i loaded the can-L11c432 update.zip from huawei and extracted with others the system.img - that also did not help to boot.
Tomorrow i flashed the orignal recovery.img from c432 but i did not find an update.zip wich works to manually flash in stock recovery.
@Vinnom the link you shared leads to twrp.img (no system.img).
@-=MoRpH=- thanks, i will try and report back. Is this anyway a chinese version in there? I think i have the same struggle you had days back. Is your phone completely working again?
So sick that my phone did not work. Now working with my "old" LG G2...
I report back later - first family dinner

@merlin21 yes it sounds like my problem after I tried to flash the emui5 beta.
My phone is fully working again with the backup I posted.
This is not the Chinese version, if nothing works, you can try the caz ROM. But there are massive problems with the gapps, they are not included in the rom.

i just flashed the twrp.img with fastboot from xelfmade v22.12. and then rebooted twrp.
Then formated data and confirmed with yes - rebooted recovery and tried to restore your twrp. It did not restore and aborted instantly with the error message
during restoreing cust...
extractTarFork() proecess ended with ERROR: 255
what could that be?
IT WORKS! Thanks @murph... I had to use the cust from my backup, but with your data partition it successfully booted again. Locking forward if i now have still the problem with read only system partition. I am away setting up phone again (and of course rooting, modifying etc.. but FIRST do a full backup after basic setup and safe in PC !!!)
Thanks!
P.S. how did you manage to back up data partition in recovery? I thought this wouldn't be possible?! What is the cost for having this full working twrp?
PPS. Somehow knock on screen for screenshot does not work - could be, that i have to log in with huawei id... does it work for you morp?

That only work if the is not rooted... Idk whats up with that, but for now i use the quicksetting screenshot function.
Somehow it worked with my rooted device before. Must be the decrypted data partition?
With the recovery of your backup I could not access data or change memory from data to sd. What version do you use?
I flashed xelfmades v22 and now have rw access and could backup all partitions and restore. Root and xposed modules everything works, just the knock on screen to capture don't...

May I ask how?
I'm kinda stuck personnaly. I have tried both Nand backups but no cigar. Still can't boot. I had the Data issue which I managed to get rid of.
I still end up with a ExtTarFork 255 kind of error. I tried to change the files attributes via adb shell, but it failed so I've got an OS-Less phone...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I copied the backup, which is linked somewhere in this thread, to my sdcard and restored it on my Nova using twrp. The extractfork issue showed up while restoring '/cust' so i disselected cust in the restoring menu. After that the restoring worked and my nova was able to boot.
Hope this is any help to you.

That didn't do the trick for a while, or I might have forgotten a step, but deselecting CUST did the trick.
Thanks for the tip!
Although, maybe flashing the Cust partition I found in one of the two upgrade zips via fastboot might have helped? I dunno...
But in short, for those who haven't followed through, here's what I did, but I'm not sure this is why it worked:
1. Bricked my device : be sad;
2. DLed all the posted Nandroid backup on this thread and others;
3. With fastboot, reflashed TWRP from Xelfmade using "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img";
4. Flashed the CUST.img I found in the UPDATE.APP of the update_data_full_CAN-L11_hw_eu.zip; or maybe the other, only one of the two seem to have it; I extracted it using Huawei Firmware Extractor; using "fastboot flash cust cust.img";
5. Created a "fake" backup to create the right folder structure on my SD (TWRP Couldn't see the backups) and put the Nandroid Backups I DLed earlier in it;
6. Reboot in TWRP and Restore all partitions except CUST;
7. Reboot, sweat, wait, cry, roll on the floor in fear, heard the huawei startup sound, cried as if it was my first born child;
8. Setup the fone and profit; then enjoy Nova goodness;
92.324. and probably most important, TWRP BAAAACKUUUUP!!!!!
All done!
Thanks for your help my phone is saved with your method!!!
i downgraded my MLA-L03 variant with this, but now im stuck in french language with no other languages to choose from

Frankly, I don't know. I had not modified the partitions prior to bricking my phone, so I think the partitioning was OK. However, I think one of the TWRP availble in this forum can format Data partition properly, which would utlimately allow you to select which File Format you want. I haven't tried it myself, and I haven't been able to do much with TWRP since I flashed Lineage unfortunately. Most of my Mods were just upgrading and I had to ADB Sideload pretty much everything since I flashed Lineage...
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful than that!

Question about Alice-TWRP Backup on P8 Lite

Hi, im using TWRP from persona78 for Huawei P8 Lite Alice-L21 dual.
My Question isnt related to this but lemme ask,... which IMAGES i have to backup before formatting & re-flashing persona78's emui basic mod rom ?
I read about <Nandroid backup> but im unsure ..what happen if i flash his modified emui basic rom and restore everything in TWRP ? like, 3rdmodem, data, cust, system, cache ?
So my question is an Nadroid back & restore enough ?
do i have to wipe all partitions or just hard reset, before re-flashing his rom ?
=========
btw, how to put his name in this thread ?

@persona78 You have to write tutorial how to flash Your Rom!
Ok, hang on, this Gonna be fun!
1. step take a backup (Nandroid) (System;Cust;OEM info;Boot) in case if You don't like it or something goes wrong!
2.Make Factory Reset (Wipe data without Media)
3. Flash Persona's ROM.zip
4. Reboot System!
5. Wait It To Boot!
Thanks!
And I Dont Recommend to restore Data, it will go Bad, Trust Me!

Hello guys,
i've just received the Android 8.0.0 and as soon as i got it, i root-ed it. Now everything is fine but the only problem i have is that i cannot backup the whole system as it is right now with TWRP.
When i open TWRP in boot and i go to backup all files it gives me the following error : "unable to mount //data". How can i solve this problem without formatting it again ?
Thank you.
P.S : i added a photo as an attachment with the error.
Format both to fat and back to ext4. I would like to know if there is another way. You can backup needed apps with titanium and restore later.

When you say both, you mean "data" and what else ?
LE: I did it for "data" and now it seems to work but will try when i have the whole rom ready.
Thanks.
Update : for that time being, it seemed to work. After that i installed all the apps and did all the settings and now when i go to backup it gives me the same error. This is a part of the recovery.log after the failed backup. By the way, it failed at almoast 95% .
".....................

Iartition Backup time: 659
Failed to mount '/data' (No such process)
I:Actual block device: '/dev/block/sda24', current file system: 'ext4'
Backup Failed"

Can anybody help me ?

Did you first format data to fat and back to ext4 and it got fixed?; was it showing free space in /data/media, not like on screenshot where is 0mb and it's broken? after you tried to backup it broke in the process? Try to wipe, install custom rom and back up it. Try external sd

After the first format it got fixed, yes. And i did make a back-up.
After that, i booted, i installed apps and so on and when i came back to twrp the error reappeared and /data got corrupted again.

I never got blocked out for 7 days even though i installed at least 20 times different roms in the past days.
When i rooted i installed the RMM .zip . Are you sure it's from there ?
Yes, I had the same problem. I am back on Android 7 until there is a good discribtion in the right order to get it right. No one can tell me the right solution. They are all diferent. So I wait for now.

I've tried using a twrp for oneplus 5 because they seem to have had the same problem. The good news is that is seemed to work as the /data remained ok. The bad news is that the phone would enter a loop.

I found the fix !!
dr.ketan helped me make the right files to flash. Now i have made the first FULL backup and i am amazed it works. In recovery /data appears mounted. I went there 3 times to make sure :fingers-crossed:
If you want to I will ask dr. ketan if i can upload the files.
Thanks for the help and have an easy day!
OKé, is he on the forum, dr ketan? Perhaps you can tell us now because you have the solution.

That seems to be double to me. If you follow the video you are okay but you can also do dr. ketan way and you are okay. Am I right?

if you follow the video you have the "/data" problem and after that you solve it with the solution from dr. Ketan.
I don't know if you can flash directly the zip from dr. ketan, haven't tried it. In theory it should work but i can only confirm what worked for me.
Keep me updated on what you did.
Best step if one is on oreo stock and just want twrp +root
1.flash twrp with format data (will wipe Int storage)
2.flash magisk (from ext SD)
3.flash data mount fix(from ext SD)
All three to be flashed without reboot in between
Then must have to reboot to system
Now next time when reboot to recovery, data will available in twrp
Who already have oreo rom +twrp then simply flash data mount
Who are on nougat custom and want oreo custom rom
1.factory reset (no need to format data)
2.flash oreo custom rom
3.flash magisk if rom doesn't included
4.flash data mount fix
Reboot to system once
Done

3.go in recovery
4.flash dm-verity and force encryption disabler (from ext SD)
5.flash magisk (from ext SD)
6.flash data mount fix(from ext SD)
All four to be flashed without reboot in between

Internal Storage Decryption problem

Hi.
I have huge problem. I have Redmi Note 7 with xiaomi.eu (Last stable MIUI 10 version). Today I decided to update it to latest version (MIUI 11). Before it, I made backup via TWRP and then perform update. Update successfull. I thought that I prefer MIUI 10 so in TWRP perform wipe dalvic and cache and make restore backup. Backup succesfull. But... System wont boot up. In TWRP I cant see internal storage (0MB), TWRP ask for decryption password but the password from unlocking phone doesnt work. I dont know what to do. I dont want to lose my data. I found info that OrangeFOx recovery could be helpful so I flashed OrangeFox recovery. But it also ask for password.
Help please.

You're out of luck. You need to format your data partition - and you will lose your data and all the contents of your internal storage.

Is there any way to backup storage eg. via adb or something and try later to restore it?
EDIT
I performed wipe, install latest android. Data is gone. I found some windows apps to restore data after factory reset via adb. I'll try this in next week

Good luck!
PS: if your original MIUI 10 backup included /data, then you should be able to restore the data after formatting, flashing a fresh copy of the MIUI 10 ROM, booting the ROM, and then, booting back to recovery and restoring the data backup. But the content of your internal storage is gone forever (if you didn't back it up before).
Unfortunately I lost all my data (mainly photos). I'll buy microsd to store data and backups.

Problem flashin custom ROM, TWRP doesn't stay and other PLEASE HELP

Hi guys, this is my problem. Got MI9T with Android 10 (miui 11) 128GB, and I wanna install Pixel Experience. So, those are my steps until the problem :
1) Bootloader unlocked
2) After this, with TOOL ALL IN ONE.exe, I installed TWRP and everything ok.
3) Wiped EVERYTHING (data, cache, dalvik etc.)
4) here problem) When I wipe data also PE.ZIP is deleted from smartphone, so I plugin smartphone to pc to transfer it again. But when I go to C:/MI9T, I couldn't transfer ANY FILE because memory available was ZERO. 0/128GB, and I don't know why. So I was stuck on TWRP and I had to reinstall stock rom with MiFlash.exe.
(QUESTION: do I have to flash also vbmeta to keep twrp?)
I did the same process on RedmiNote5 but was easier because I had microsd with everything on.
Please if someone could help .. thank you so much
Hello, you just need to reboot to recovery if you can't transfert from PC after wiping/formating data.

What do you mean? Just reboot smartphone?
Anyway, is vbmeta necessary to keep twrp?

No reboot to system, reboot to recovery, you have that option in Twrp...
