How can i boost volume in ear piece for call? - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Have another thread but haven't had a reply, the earpiece is low.
I've seen that i can edit mixer_paths_tash.xml but it's made no difference, i can barely hear people in calls.
Is there any way to boost the audio, i've flashed the stereo mod but i can't tell if it's worked, hasn't made a difference for calls.
Any help please, i'd prefer not to RMA my device if i can help it.
Thanks

I'm also interested. For some reason some dust entered in the earpiece and the volume I get now is lower than in the beginning. I don't want service my phone so it would be great to increase the in call volume a bit.

To be honest this appears to have been a problem with the one plus 2, 3 and 3T
I also don't want an RMA and I'm tempted to buy the speaker myself which are very cheap, only £3 on eBay.
The one plus 5 is also extremely easy to take apart, there is no adhesive on the underside nor the battery, all that's needed are some small torx a Philips and a plastic or any non metal prying tool.
Flex cables are all relatively robust, I'm not a huge opener of phones but I'm confident I could do it.
Video on disassembly and removal / replacing the earpiece.
Bare in mind that one of the screws in question does have a tamper cover so there's every probability that you will lose warranty for doing this.

If your phone is unlocked and you have twrp. Use a custom kernel which features Flar2's sound control as you can boost earpiece volume there

I'm on nolimits but with the stock kernel..
I have edited /system/etc/mixer_paths_tasha.xml which I believe is what's altered when volume is boosted.
Made no change..
If you'd like to try this yourself @ the other person having issues
Open mixer_paths_tasha.xml which is in /system/etc/
From there use the screen shot to edit the correct line..
Default value is 84 the max value I'd put it to is 96
Save and reboot.

Remember that there are a lot of fake parts on eBay. I remember back in the days I fixed the earpiece of a galaxy S2 and I had to buy 3 different earpiece to get one with an acceptable volume.

At £3 I honestly don't care. I'll just send it back and their rating will go down..
I'll also communicate with the seller to see if it's legit. If it's not as described it'll go back..

That's strange I don't see this file. I've tried several root browsers.
But I maybe found an other solution :
* download the "Root volumer Mixer + Booster/Microphone app" on the play store. (it edits the mixer_paths.xml file).
* Set the slider to 9 or 10 (optimal setting for me in my case)
* reboot
The issue is that it affects not only the earpiece, it's a system wide setting.
Does it change something for you?

Which ROM are you on ? Android normally doesn't have the tasha.xml it usually has just mixer_paths.xml they're essentially the same. Just find the lines I've listed and highlighted.

I am using xXx no limits 9.4 ( oos 5.0.1 based ) and I don't see mixer_ paths.xml either (screenshot of /system/etc attached). Strange. I'll give it a try again in a few days after a clean flash.
I guess I'll stay with my current setting for the moment (using the "root volume mixer" app).

Oh ok? Weird. Try the other folder in root. The etc folder is present in /etc and system/etc
I'm also running 9.4 xXx

Ok so took my oneplus 5 apart today, really simple..
I thought the earpiece speaker may have had some debris on it but there is literally nothing.
Guess I need a new earpiece, ordered via eBay for £7 inc postage.
Should be with me in a few days.
will keep you posted on how it goes.

Bare in mind that the videos on YouTube for me were of a different design. My front facing camera was attached to the front housing not the motherboard, potential breakage risk. Also there is a tamper sticker just the top right screw which I believe doubles up as a water damage indicator. I went through it, possible to replace.

Quick update :
I used a toothbrush (dry) to clean my earpiece.
Be sure to enter the toothbrush hairs in the little holes of the earpiece. The volume is now loud enough ( no software tweak).

Lol mate I took the entire phone apart it was in about five pieces, the earpiece was not the issue, something else is.
I installed elemental X and that has an audio booster, knocked it to 11DB
A lot louder now, not perfect but acceptable.
I'd like to know exactly what is altered using this tweak as I order the stock kernel.

S5 Duos low mic

Hey guys just got my S5 and I am told that the mic volume is quote low by people I speak to. Is this normal or I have a faulty device on my hands
Very unlikely to be a hardware problem. Usually it's a user error e.g. not holding the phone close enough to your mouth or using the phone in very loud environments.
Try using the phone normally i.e. not in speaker phone mode where performance is worse and you annoy everyone within earshot. You can also try disabling noise reduction in the settings menu. Infrequently you may have water, dirt or your finger (when you hold the phone) obscuring the microphone hole on the bottom of the phone.
It's also possible to tweak the mic volume in the service menu /audio submenu. A forum search will explain the details if you wish to try that.

I have the same problem on the same device - but from all the googling I did - It turns out it a common problem with the S5 (single or dual SIM).
So far I did not find any solution to the problem...
Please share if you had any luck?
I am even considering widening the hole of the microphone (it is about 30% narrower then the S4), I do not care that much of the water protection...
Solved!
Happy to report I solved my low mic. problem!
Unfortunately it compromises the waterproofing, but I gladly sacrificed it!
I did poke in the microphone hole with a tin wire about 3-4 mm into the hole. I did not feel any resistance, but apparently I broke the waterproofing membrane on the microphone hole.
Now people can hear me even when I am whispering! I am so happy with my phone! (at one point I was thinking of replacing it because of the muffled mic.!)
The membrane I am talking about can be seen on the middle frame over the mic. hole on the attached picture.
Please if you do what I did - be careful, it might damage the microphone...

Hi armsel,
Good Spot!!! thanks for sharing the trick. I am having the same problem with my and I wish to follow your procedure in my phone.
Please provide more information with detailed steps and screen shots because I'm little confused in figured out microphone hole why because found two holes in bottom and top of the phone. I knew its my own risk and don't consider about waterproof.

Your primary microphone is the one on the bottom - next to the USB port (the top microphone is used for noise cancellation and you can leave as it is). You only need to poke the bottom one. Be gentle - if you feel resistance - don't push (I did not feel any resistance as far as I can remember). Test afterwords and see if there is an improvement - if not, try to penetrate little bit further (I believe I went something like 3, maybe even 5 mm in).
Best way to test - if you have another phone and call it on Viber (I did that with my wife galaxy S4 mini). And leave your next to a radio set with talk show on.
Good luck! :good:

Microphone not working on Galaxy S5

My microphone on my S5 is not working. When I make a call I can hear the person but they can not hear me I also tried recording my voice and it didn't work, so clearly I am assuming the microphone is broken. What part do I specifically need in order to replace the microphone and have it working?
Sounds like you didn't do a search and read the existing threads on this subject. Your assumption that the mic isn't working may not be correct. You should at least try turning off the noise cancelling settings first, speaking closer to the mic, et cetera. There is also a service menu setting for microphone gain. Failing all of those items, then a warranty claim or buying the part yourself, if out of warranty.
All of these are elaborated in more detail in existing threads.

It would have been helpful if you had bothered to tell us up front that you had done so.
The primary microphone is part of the charging port assembly.

Ok so replacing that part should fix the problem?
I was having mic problems. Remembered a friend having issues on his S3, he used a needle to clean rubbish out of the hole on bottom of the phone. So i did the same, very thin needle only pushed in a small amount, pulled a load of fluff out. Problem solved. Two mics on s5, bottom is for using phone normally, top is for when you use in speaker mode.
Might be worth a try.

Is your phone rooted?
If yes than are you using custom kernel?
If Yes than which kernel?
Sometimes it is due to kernel.
Such problems are more s 5 s
This is probably due to the waterproof cover
I have a rooted stock G 900 a mic doesn't work but speaker does. left touch button doesn't work or light up. the device is still under warranty so we sent it back to Samsung and they wanted almost $200 to fix it whereas I am going to pay $10 for that whole board and microphone I'm fix it myself I am hoping that this will fix the problems. I am 99% sure it is because of some water damage. just a small amount of water I believe got in the charger port. check out what. I will update on this too with results. maybe a video. I have replaced glass and motherboards on many s5 but this is a really advanced repair

Seems like my S5 is doing the same thing. It started doing this just in the last few weeks, and I haven't figured out how to address the problem.
I am having the same issue as navpal above
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this frustrating problem?
I also would appreciate if solution were posted. HEre are things I have tried with no success.
I cannot even slightly be heard on other line, except when in speakerphone mode. I can hear myself on my side, so I know that the sound is being recorded by at least one microphone.
tried:
clearing system cache
factory reset
clearing out microphone with pin
Hi there.
I have (not mine) Samsung S5 in my hands
Have tried:
Safe mode
battery out of the device and back on method
cannot do factory reset - still don`t want to disturb the client about that
Can you give me picture only of the MIC,not the whole board and others?
Maybe i can try clean it.
If i try to replace the old one will that be enough for me - i attach one photo ?
How is that done at all?
Thanks in advance
Hey Guys,
Im having the same issue. My phone went underwater without the USB flap cover and now the microphone does not work.
Should I replace all USB board? or replacing only the microphone piece would solve the problem?
Also, I wasn`t able to find more threats about it, if you guys have it, please help posting here the link.
Thx
You're about a smartass aren't you
This is an old thread, but I wanted to share my solution to this. My mic audio was very weak in speakerphone mode on Galaxy S5, but was OK in normal phone mode. The S5 has 2 microphones: bottom one is for normal mode, only top one is used in speakerphone mode. On mine the top mic hole was internally plugged with some debris. After cleaning it out by carefully inserting a broken-in-half toothpick (the blunt end) and twirling it while holding phone upside down to allow dirt to fall out, my speakerphone mic audio problem has been solved. If your mic audio is OK in speakerphone but weak in normal mode, it could be the mic hole along the bottom edge that needs cleaning. Using Voice Recorder in INTERVIEWEE mode will test only the upper microphone. Other modes of Voice Recorder enable both microphones so would be less conclusive. Cleanining out the mic holes completely solved my problem, while software fixes such as unchecking noise cancellation did not make any significant difference. Hope this is helpful.

Microphone Broken? D801

Hello,
I have an issue with my microphone where I need to yell into it for it to have any volume at all. This behavior appears in Google Now, during phone calls, and with the Screen Recorder app (affects everywhere).
Reading a kernel thread in Android Development, I saw tons of people talking about gain and settings for the microphone, so for 3 months I chalked it up to a kernel issue in the CM nightlies I was using. Yelling into my phone in public so people could hear me haha
Since the official T-Mobile Lollipop ota came out, I decided to flash the KDZ from LG. This of course wiped out everything, recovery, new bootloader, even a new battery charging screen when dead. Clearly completely refreshed.
The issue persists.
Does anyone know what this could be? I had a similar issue when I was still in warranty, so I had the microphone replaced. I'm not sure if it did anything, I made a few test calls when it came back from warranty and it seemed to work (obviously on KK stock software for warranty shipment)
Please let me know! I wish I had an intuition with the G2 like I have had for several devices in the past, but I don't.
Thanks,
jcarrz1

May be the holes for mic is blocked with dust particles.
Would consider what he's ^^^^ saying.
Maybe worth opening the phone and cleaning out your dust from the inside out.
Especially on the bottom left where the Mic is.
Once you have it open blast the ports and speaker holes with a good amount of compressed air.
See if that makes a difference
That was it! thanks guys.
I actually used a normal staple to clean out the holes, I didn't have air or a needle handy. but it worked perfectly (I removed the back cover so I could see when they were cleaned out (by shining a light) and so that i wouldn't poke anything inside).
It's amazing how a little gunk/lint in those holes made me completely inaudible.
Thanks again.

microphone issues during call on android N

From the past 2-3 days i started using the 6P for voice calling and i noticed the other side could not hear me properly so today i confirmed it my self and it was true my sound is muffled at best and i have to take the bottom speaker very near to my mouth to make the other party hear. There is absolutely no sound if i held my phone normally. Please help me.
I'd advice you to check the other microphone on the back. Clean it. And while on call, do not block it, or the sound gets muffled.

Blow it, preferably with canned air. Test your microphones by recording a video where you talk and listen to it. Does it sound normal?

Recording audio from third party recording apps works perfectly. Audio during video recording is also perfect. Its only during calls the issue occurs.

Does it still occur if you make sure that you're not blocking the microphone right under the rear camera on the back? Because that's the most common reason for that.

Yup. I almost never block the mic on the rear.
I have it too, already from android M, it has to do with noise canceling. I've tried allot of things. but none of them really worked. If I put the phone on speaker, the issue is gone, the person on the other side can then hear me perfectly again. Google should fix this problem. I don't think there's much we can do about it..
IS there a fix for this I have 2 6p's with the same issue. I am happy to root one and have a test if there is a known solution.

What this does is disables the noise cancelling mic during a normal call which is the source of the issue. There is an issue in the coding or the actual hardware where the noise cancelling mic picks up on your voice as background sound and tries to lower the volume of those khz which is what it is supposed to do with everything except your voice.... When you put it on speaker mode or record video it automatically turns the noise cancelling mic off which is why it works perfectly in those modes and why this little trick that I have been doing for over 2 years now works. It is just a simple build.prop change and all you need is root access and a text editor. The application is nice to make it easy but not necessary. I hope this illuminates the issue and why this little work around actually works. Trying to clean the noise cancelling mic or other measures will get you about nowhere as it is firmly a problem with the operation of the noise cancelling mic in normal call mode. I remember when we were diagnosing the issue on some thread here on XDA and some people said to put your finger over the noise cancelling mic or that they used a piece of tape to cover it which gave the same result, so we decided to just do away with it on the software level. I guess if you don't have root you can cover it with a piece of tape permanently or your finger while you speak on the phone.
Hope that helps; decided to post for posterity.
Also, I tried the program linked and it did not change the actual build.prop file for me, but rather made a new one which was not in the right place and therefore did nothing for the actual running of the phone. All you need to do is go into root -> system -> build.prop and find "persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=true" and change it to false then save. You can leave the other ones alone. I used Solid Explorer and edited the file with SE Text Editor which I gather comes with LineageOS as I only downloaded Solid Explorer and not SE Text Editor.

I used to have this issue on my OnePlus 3T. It happened when the reciever mesh was blocked with dust so I'd just take a toothbrush and clean the mesh and that would fix it. Try that on your 9T once, whoe knows maybe it'll work

This is half a year old post but it turned up as I googled the issue. I too have suffered from low phone call volume and was looking for a mod or something to boost the volume. But as I read this reply from Mizart I actually remembered I had fixed the issue on my previous phone just by cleaning the speaker carefully. So I did and now the phone call volume almost hurt my ear.
So what I did was I took a brush with as many soft bristles as possible. I found an antiseptic alcohol solution which I sprayed a little to the speaker and brushed with some force in order to make sure the bristles went in. After some brushing I dried it and took it to my vacuum and vacuumed the speaker with full power.
This worked quite well and as I was on it I cleaned the other ports too
Hope this helps!
I had this issue for almost 4 months, changed 10 roms , then found it was my firmware issue. THEN SOLVED.

I have just did this and my volume during a phone call is better than I remember... It took maybe 15-20 careful swipes with extra soft teeth brush. Thanks!

Such a simple solution to such an annoying problem! :silly: Worked like a charm...
I tried combining both. What solved the problem first was cleaning with a toothbrush. Then, using the engineer mode I was able to perfectly control and configure the desired volume of the receiver. Thank you.
