Seriously, I love this phone. I got it 2 days ago and i can't take my hands off it.
I'm 32 years old (yea yea getting old now), and was brought up on computer games. This phone makes me remember just how good the old megadrive/genesis/snes games were compared to the (mostly) crappy indie games that we see these days. I've fondly been playing Sonic, Mario, Super Star Wars, Streets of Rage and a whole host of others flawlessly on this little beauty. It's an emulation dream come true.
The N64 emulator lags a little bit for me, but mostly it's just occasional sound skipping, it is certainly still more than playable, although the control mapping could be a little bit easier. I'm hoping a MAME emulator will be released that supports all the old mame games and not just the capcom games. (Anyone can tell me if there is one already or one coming out?)
Some fears i had for the phone before i purchased were these -
- Worried it would be too bulky
- Worried about the screen auto dim feature and not being able to turn it off
- Worried about the battery life
- Worried about the hardware being outdated before it even hit the shelves
- Well, the phone is bulkier than alot of other phones, but it is still slim enough to easily slip in and out your pocket. I didn't look at the phone before i ordered it, i just jumped in and ordered it off the net and hope it was what i wanted (or i could send it back within 7 days to get a refund). Overall i am very happy with the size of the phone. I certainly don't feel like an idiot getting it out my pocket, it looks very cool.
- The auto brightness on the screen is not all that bad. I got annoyed at first, not being able to turn the phone on max brightness, but after a few minutes my eyes got used to it and i hardly notice it anymore. It must serve a good purpose because the battery lasts a long time. I think that an official patch is definately needed though, not giving people an option to turn off auto brightness is disastrous. Saying that, more than likely i would leave auto brightness turned on, it does save battery and it is implemented excellently imho.
- Battery life is amazing. I got through 12-14 hours of gaming, browsing, and general usage + a full night withought charge on standby and when i woke up it had 7% battery life left. You can not go through 2 days with this phone though, so still you will have to charge it every night, but you can guarantee a full, proper day usage out of it without too much worries about the battery dieing.
- Hardware is a bit meh. On one hand the phone runs super smooth. And FPSE plays PS1 games super smooth, no slowdown at all. The N64 as i mentioned has a few sound skips. So the hardware does exaclty what it was designed to do. This is where it stops though. There will be no PS2 emulation, no dreamcast emulation, no xbox1 emulation. Not until the next handset gets released. This is the limits of this phones power.
Overall i think this is the best phone made to date. I don't care it hasn't got 1080p recording, i don't care the camera is only 5 megapixel. This phone owns and is easily the best phone i have ever owned to date.
Roll on the Xperia Play 2. I am now a branded fan.
edit - Just thought i would say that my phone came with a 16gb Micro SD card, 2 screen protectors (1 of them already put on flawlessly, no air bubbles or dust underneath at all, 1 spare). I have heard people only getting 8gb cards and no screen protectors, but this did not happen with my order.
i mostly agree with you, this is the best phone i have had and i have owned a G1, motorola dext, motorola milestone and a HTC HD2, i would only recommend the HD2 out of these and even then, only after installing android (unless your into windows)
the thing is, i no some people dont value proper gaming as much as me or others so they think this device is not needed but im glad we dont all feel the same way
what im really hoping for this device is, for it to be popular enough so that other manufacturers (or even sony) make a similar device, hopefully with dual or even quad core in mind, add 1GB ram and dreamcast/PS2 emulation is a possibility
but for right now? the play is excellent considering its the first of its kind
agree with most of what you say. but yes hardware is a bit meh.
could have done with better implementation on shoulder buttons and i still think they coud've stuck in an L2/R2 somewhere
overall, the best android phone i ever had was hands down the galaxy S. ****ing beatiful, screen, performance (with custom rom and lagfix!), etc.
but as a gaming phone, this is THE best, despite it's lackluster hardware, it has hardware controls, which, IMO, makes up for all its shortcomings!
L2 and R2 buttons.....
Yeah, i guess they could be put next to each other so that it doesn't increase the thickness of the phone.
So it would look like this -
_______________________________
(L1....L2..............................R2....R1)
_______________________________
Still, FPSE allows you to put L2 and R2 at the bottom left and right of the screen. They are easy enough to get to with your thumbs, so it's no big deal tbh.
usually not a big deal, but when you have to use simultaneous button presses, i.e. press R2 and X together, can become tricky.

Hi peeps,
Got mine today, excellent phone love the Ginerbread.
a few issues so far but no problem.
Love this phone, looks so stylish and plays excellent.

Im in the same camp as you mate, same age and gaming experience and I agree 100%

TLDR; this is the best mobile gaming handheld in terms of power and available software you can currently buy that satisfies the console emulators hobbyists needs.
not the absolute best when it comes to hardware and features, but makes up for it in interface and available software and raw power.

i just wanted to say i read your review and it was pretty good, i was interested in pandora at first but because of how long it took to release i completely forgot about it, although looking at it now, i totally envy the keyboard except the D pad and triggers, having gaming controls AND a qwerty keyboard is just excellent, sony should consider this with the xperia play 2 or what ever manufacturer decides to make a PS certified phone, if extra bulk was needed i could certainly live with it
that said, the keyboard is the only thing i would take from pandora, in my opinion the play beats it in every other area except screen size but then thats balanced with capacitive vs resistive
EDIT - forgot to check the pandora website to see how much it costs.....wow, 440 euro is alot, i was expecting a little over half that, just for comparisons sake i bought my play , sim free for £400 a few days after release, considering the play has more useful features (in my opinion) 3G, android OS and its market, phone functions etc....im surprised it cost so much
I agree here !
I am 27 and also brought up with retro games it's so nice able to play my games again from my childhood.
The device lays good in your hand indeed the as for the brightness well it's fine although my xperia x10 with lowest brightness on is still readable and not with my xperia play but even cranked up at highest brightness the battery still remains exellent thought it would drain like hell like my x10 does but it doesn't !
Glad I got rid of my omnia with win mobile and now have 2 nice xperia devices !
Android is the OS I am currently hooked on never was to happy with my omnia due winmobile but the phone was hyped in my country and it was the biggest mistake I made.
Hardware wise yea there are already dualcore devices and tegra2 gpu powered
as for the emulators of xbox , ps2 , dreamcast & gamecube
I don't think we will see them in the next year or so
but then again there is a developer working to get a dreamcast emu working and progress is already nice I think it's a matter of time we will see
as for my order I recieved a stock screenprotector already on screen , extra screen protector ( they are very scratch resistant my x10 didn't have such a good screenprotector had to take the factory applied on off and apply a newly bought screen protector ) Wall charger , car charger , leather poach & 8gb SD card which I recently upgraded to 32gb
I think in point of view it is the best phone for me but can be better if they added more memory/better screen/ and a PSP Emulator

fair point but like someone told me, this is the first generation of this particular device, yes, sony could have gone all out but that would just mean the xperia play 2 would only have minor updated features
think of it like the first iphone, it probably should have had 3G, better ram etc but it just meant that the jump from iphone 2g to 3g was that much greater
although saying all that, im pretty sure HTC, motorola, samsung or LG will bring a play competitor before the years end with atl east dual core onboard

Does anyone know how the sales are going in Europe of this device?
If sales were crazy, like on the iphone, then probably we will have more joypad versions, if not, then this will be like the Nokia Ngage... how many years have passed from that phone to this one? i dont remember well, but at least 6 o 7...
So basically, we will have to wait until the phone gets released worldwide and see how the numbers go to SE.
Probably on the next version i will expect an exclusive suite and not an android suite that all phones can play with. Because if we have something exclusive, then we will have a game that will be made for this controls. (from what i heard, the PS Suite will be available on android market for all high end devices)
my only annoyance with the device is the power button should have been on the screen section not controller, I occasionally press it when im playing something that uses the L shoulder a lot e.g. street fighter

How do you manage to do that?
My power button is actually indented. I can't turn it off with my 'L' finger even if i try to do it on purpose.

I bought a Nexus 7 to use it as an ebook reader and I'm plenty satisfied in that regard. I soon discovered that I can do plenty of other interesting things with it so I rooted it mainly to install the Sixaxis app. My main point of interest is with emulators. I've bought every decent emulator available in the Google Play store (see the screenshot ). Soon, I saw the limits of the N7: small screen and average CPU/GPU performance.
So, I started looking for another 10 inches Android tablet and, until yesterday, it was to be a Nexus 10 (when available). But, after reading a lot of complains about the Exynos 5 in the N10 being throttled, I wonder if this tablet is really the best choice in term of available CPU / GPU performance. If only a fraction of the Exynos 5 power is available due to thermal constraints or if it gets throttled a lot, maybe the N10 isn't the best tablet out there for gaming and emulation...
I know that I could flash another ROM and start fiddling with the CPU parameters but I don't like that idea. I'm worried about battery life, overheating and all the troubles you get when you want to update to a newer version of Android after you switched ROMs. Overclocking is not something I want to do either. I would like to stay with the stock ROM. Are my concerns about changing ROMs valid? I may change my mind about this though, if it's the best solution and there is no danger of damaging my N10.
So, my questions are: is the N10 a good choice for emulation and for gaming? Is there other 10 inches tablets that would fill the bill better? Should I think about ROM replacement and/or tweaking instead and stay with the N10? I started checking the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it doesn't compare very well to the N10 (price, specs, screen). Also, there is the Tegra4 pointing at the horizon...
Edit:
I'll probably go for the N10 when it will be available. I'm reading the AOKP ROM thread and it sounds like the dev has nailed most of my concerns. Here's the link of the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095222
And here's a nice video showing it:

Thanks for the video link.
I'm a University student who mostly uses my iPad for taking notes. I am not very happy with my iPad primarily because I feel extremely limited in what I'm allowed to run (no full browser, no flash, and the lack of java is of particular sadness to me as I'm in a Java course right now and would like to use my tablet for doodling with Eclipse). I'm also very disappointed that Apple doesn't have a good setup for multitasking.
I looked at the Samsung 500t. The price looks excellent however I was turned off buying this device because here in Canada they are selling a watered down unit which doesn't come with the digitizing pen. I was also informed by a few folks that it would be silly to buy it since it has Intel 3000 graphics instead of 4000.
That lead me onto looking at higher end tablets such as the Acer w700 which comes with the i5 processor. Right now my only concern with this tablet is that I don't know what the battery life would be using it.
In order of importance to me I guess I would say:
1. Battery life
2. Processing Power
3. Compatibility (RT vs x86)
I really want to buy a tablet which has comparable battery life to my current iPad. I was even considering going RT because there are some fantastic ported software also I'm avoiding doing that for now because I really want to have Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox on my tablet (and from what I've read from searching xda I think porting full browsers is quite tricky so I'm not sure if I can ever expect this to happen).
My dream tablet I guess would be something which has like 10 hours of battery life and an i5 but I'm not sure if there are any tablets out which can give me this.
I guess right now I'm not sure if I should wait for something more powerful with better battery life to come out, or if I should give in to temptation and buy something now with the BEST battery life (so I would have to figure out what has the BEST battery life).

I was unaware that getting some feedback before making a rather expensive purchase was a bad idea. Next time I will simply close my eyes and choose one out of a magazine in lieu of reading countless reviews and asking other consumers what they think of their own tablets :fingers-crossed:
>My dream tablet I guess would be something which has like 10 hours of battery life and an i5 but I'm not sure if there are any tablets out which can give me this.
>I guess right now I'm not sure if I should wait for something more powerful with better battery life to come out, or if I should give in to temptation
Yes, please be sure.
Seriously, what are you looking for? You've read "countless reviews," so what else is left? If you want buyer feedback, jump on Amazon and have your fill. Do you have something specific to ask, or are you hoping for strangers to make up your mind for you? Do you want to talk about dream tablets?
Do excuse the blunt talk. Chalk it up to my poor social skills. Feel free to mingle and partake. There are lots of wafflers here.
Oops, forgot my smilie. Must be hospitable! :fingers-crossed::laugh:
PS: Do you actually read mags for review?! Whoa...unique!
Problem with an i5 and 10hrs of battery life would be the size of the battery required for that to happen.
Question is, why do you need so much processing power? Unless you intend to do other things, I don't see why an HD3000 wouldn't be enough for what you want it to do.
Remember that any serious work should really be done on a real machine, not a tablet. Tablets are a supplement to a better machine, not meant to be your primary machine. Convenience over power.

It's worse than you guys think. If the Atom had an HD 3000, that'd be quite impressive. It's actually much worse. It's got a GMA 3600, which is a far cry below the HD 3000.
In my experience, it can play HD videos, but just barely and really needs an app well optimized for it to do so. I was really let down by the graphics power and poor HD video playback ability of the Atom in the Samsung 500T.
And this is likely the reason we see these Atom tablets only using 1366x768 displays.

I don't think you'll find your dream tablet for a while. But the W700 seems to get surprisingly good battery life. I see reports of 7 hours, which is almost twice what some of the other Core i5 tablets get.
I think the docking station on the W700 is a bit funky though and a shame it doesn't have a clamshell keyboard dock. Also it's pretty heavy (probably mostly battery to get that kind of battery life with a Core i5). No idea how it is for note taking.
After playing around with my Samsung 500T, I felt a 11.6 inch tablet was a bit larger for not taking. It worked fine, but I think I'd prefer a 7 or 8 inch tablet for serious note taking. Samsung has a Note 8 inch expected to be announced soon. It's Android though.

I don't think you should get a RT because, when microsoft doesn't sell allot of a product (vista, phone 7 etc,) they kill it, they stop giving it updates, they just don't care second off there are like no apps and there probably never will be any. Trust me being a windows phone 7 owner, i made the mistake of buying a microsoft mobile device, the only reason why i would buy a microsoft device is because of the integration with my main OS (windows) other than that stick to windows.
To be fair, neither Vista nor WP7 is dead yet. WP7 is known to be a dead end, in that there's no official upgrade path past 7.8, but the integrated features still work, the store is still up, and new devices are still being sold. Similarly, Vista will be supported for at least another 4 years, I believe.

sssssh, they're trying to sell SurfaceRT and SurfacePRO here !
a good way to follow up is to say "The iPad is only a toy, Surface is for serious work !"
that was fun. now on to the OP:
you need a -laptop-. notes are faster, more organized, and more legible with a plain old keyboard. it doesn't matter if you get a ultra or a normal thinkpad. touch screen is unneeded. battery life is as difficult as plugging in (like everyone else in the room) or carrying an extended battery. graphics will be a non-issue, and toughness also. skip the tablet marketing hype, and do your school work.
pssst, laptops are 1/2 the cost, with better performace to boot.
I just found a benchmark (antutu) of the dev console while I was browsing the web and the CPU looks pretty decent, but sadly the gpu was left untested. (Link to this person's Imgur: http://imgur.com/a/4welz )
It scores about the same as the infinity though, so nothing really impressive.
Infinity scores: http://www.antutu.com/view.shtml?id=126
It's somewhat disappointing that they couldn't up the clock speed a bit more considering it has fan and no power restraints, but perhaps the tegra 3 doesn't perform well at those speeds.
=]
Good find looks like we are going to have quite the decent system on our hands
Hope they do a revision with tegra 5 or with sgx next time around.

Yeah, I just don't see the incentive to buy if it doesn't perform better than a smartphone. I feel like that majority of their market will already have a phone or tablet that performs similar to or better than this. Hopefully the gpu is overclocked because if it isn't than I see almost no reason for having a fan and heat sink Lol, perhaps it will come in handy with overclocking later.

If you already have a fast smartphone or tablet you'd be better off getting a controller like the Moga Pro, sixaxis, or similar instead and taht HDMI cable. This thing is very cheap so it may be worth it for those that want a portable emulator.
I have noticed that watching games like Need for Speed Most Wanted and Deadtrigger the games are not as smooth as on my Excite 7.7, TF300 or even the GS3 (Dual Snap version). I thought it was a Youtube frame rate issue, but notice the lack of smoothness with all 3D game videos I have seen when compared to my other devices. Is this an output issue to larger displays? Seems it would not be, but must be some reason. I output the Excite via HDMI and as smooth as on the device display.
Ironic Need for Speed is a game being shown, since that one game takes up one third of the storage space (It is 2GB counting user data).
I've been considering new tablets, and honestly the Shield Tablet has the features I want and I'm able to get one for $250, which seems reasonable. But I'm just wondering if it's still worth it as the it is a year old. How does it compare to newer devices?
If you're primarily going to be using it for gaming, there isn't a better tablet out there. The tablet is a steal for $250. The latest official update really makes the tablet shine and the custom rom called "Blisspop" even makes the device that much better in terms of performance. You won't regret getting one.
Well at the moment there are not many tablets that are faster (maybe even no faster) than this tablet.
Antutu scores are one of the highest even compared with the latest phones.
So speedwise it is still top notch and tablets that maybe come close you have to pay double the price for compared to a shield.
The 32Gb with Lte is unbeaten for that price.
I bought the 32GB LTE version in July, because an LTE tablet anywhere close to the Shield in terms of specs/screen etc. would have been ~$150 more.
Despite the battery recall issue, I'm satisfied with it. My (original) unit has been working perfectly and is very smooth with Lillipop 5.1 (the 3.1 OTA).
I should be receiving my replacement tomorrow, according to UPS. Presuming it doesn't have a defect, I'm looking forward to settling in. I never bothered to settle in on the old tablet (automatic actions, power saving stuff, that kind of thing) since I found out about the recall shortly after buying it, and didn't bother to fine tune it.
I recommend the tablet as an LTE device in the US, though if I didn't need the LTE connectivity probably there might be better values in wifi only (I'm not a gamer, so other tablets could meet my needs... but there are relatively few 8" LTE tablets without permanently locked bootloaders here).
Marc
The problem of the tablet is really the processor that is getting old pretty quick (don't know exactly it's true performance), but nowadays everything coming out is already being 8 cores at 2 ghz or more.
Keep Cool
But they are often not faster. Gpu of the shield is very fast maybe the fastest around at the moment. The SOC is still one of the fastest around and it is just on the market for 1 year so not that old.

There seem to be two of them for sale at that link when I go to it. One for $290, one for $320, both advertised as new (resale). Probably you're just filtering by Canadian sellers, based on your picture. Lots of folks in US won't ship outside the US, so no big deal that they aren't showing up for you.

But they are often not faster. Gpu of the shield is very fast maybe the fastest around at the moment. The SOC is still one of the fastest around and it is just on the market for 1 year so not that old.

The thing is that there aren't much AAA games to play in the shield, it's a good device more for the extra nvidia stuff.
I'm waiting for Borderlands 2 for a damn long time, but it never comes, and I don't even know if it runs on the device with good performance or if it's just for the Shield TV.
More impressive are some cheap windows tablets that for around 350€ can even run Battlefield 3 on low to mid.
Now with DX12 and tons of compatibility tablets might go more for windows again.
In fact I'm not liking much android, not a single game like the good old C&C Red alert 2, boot takes almost 2 times longer than my wind 10 PC, some websites stop working, multitasking is a joke since we can't even play a youtube music while doing anything else...
ps: Also in most performance tests we see other tablets ahead of Shield, so I don't think anything is actually that much optimized for it, not even most tegra games.

My Shield Tablet LTE topped my Nexus 9's scores on Antutu plus the Shield gaming is great to have. Let's not forget about the SD slot and the mini HDMI port on top either. This tablet still destroys everything else (even most phones) a year later. I really mine because it has a stylus and no dumb Samsung home button like their Tablet S/S2 does. Its hard to find a good tablet these days yet the Shield holds its ground and doesn't seem to lose any performance over time. I like playing Half Life 2 on it or DOOM 3 especially when I travel. Its nice to have a tablet which can play nice games too even though that's not its primary purpose for me.

Those cheap windows tablets also use Intel chips in most cases plus Windows an as OS handles things differently than Android does. I agree that there aren't many great games but the ones they do have are fun in my opinion. I have the Shield TV as well and I play all kinds of games including emulators without any issues. My i7 Samsung Ultra book probably can't handle some of the games the Shield can then again I haven't tried. I'm not a big PC gamer but I do know the GPU isn't that great in most Windows tablets/ultrabooks. Android M fixes a lot of the productivity issues and adds multi window and I'm sure Nvidia is working on it now anyway. They tend to lush updates out promptly in most cases unless there's a big issue.
I haven't seen another tablet have better gaming performance than he Shield or Nexus 9 since hwy share a GPU yet use different CPU's. My Nexus 6's SD805 doesn't come close to he 3D score that the tablet does but on Marshmallow it does get a nice ~1500 pt boost likely from the optimization in it. I can imagine the same will occur in the Shield Tablet but we won't know until Nvidia releases it.
I'm not saying the Shield is the best fit everyone but it is a great tablet if you are in the market for a LTE enabled 8in tablet thats fast, runs near stock Android and has nice games for it.
Most of those BEST Nvidia Shield games coming soon are old and I finished them already. (RES5, Half Life, Borderlands, Doom...).
The thing is, you get a good device, but you will probably end playing most games that your phone already can play maxed out.
Other thing is Nvidia blahblahblah says it's more powerful than a X360 GPU, but then most games have a little lag and nothing, but really nothing made to the android yet comes close to most X360\PS3 gameplay\physics (they just look good, but plays like crap).
Then it's my 4th Nvidia shield all are defective and the last one needs to go to RMA again.
I never had an android device, so I wanted to try it, with my experience is just a god damn bugged SO worst than windows.
Also I got sad with the strategy games and how nothing on the android thousand of games even come close to Command and Conquer Red Alert II from like 2000
My opinion:
GOOD:
- hardware Performance;
- Sound;
- has it's own wireless gamepad;
- Nvidia software + remote pc play (button mapping already in the tablet, no need to root 4 that);
- More games than other android devices;
BAD:
- Android is not really optimized;
- Not much AAA games:
- Nothing like C&C, age of empires, Skyrim........ (most games are very cheap copies of good games, but look like a 2003 game);
- In the real world, performance is not as big as nvidia make you think (best phones now probably have better performance, like Samsung S6 which is a lot more little and doesn't come close to having more than a hundred cores like this nvidia);
- Screen quality is not that awesome, it is a High resolution LCD, but nothing special besides that. It doesn't get any close to samsung phone's\tablet amoled screens;
- Battery doesn't last much either;
I actually think that something like that made for DX12 and wind 10 would probably get almost twice the performance than on the actual android OS. At least I saw some people playing BF3 on dell cheap 1 year old tablets that cost basically the same as this nvidia shield. Nowadays with DX12 and Wind 10 soon may be a new era for tablets (it seems windows based hardware have more performance per price than android devices). At least I never seen any 300€ android tablet playing anything close to a BF3 which is years ahead in gameplay + physics than any android game I ever seen\played until now.
ps: If it was today I would buy a ~350€ DELL wind tablet that can even play BF3 (guess what? No need to Root for anything as you own everything already and can update\mod everything).
