General rooting question - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

I'm starting the rooting process tomorrow. I wanted to know if starting on 7.0 can I just flash an Oreo ROM or do I have to do something specific first?
Thanks in advance!!

First, it sounds like you need to do a little more research, because you don't need to root at all if you are going to flash a custom ROM, you only need TWRP. You only need to root if you are going to use the stock ROM and want root for something there.
General rules... Backup... Backup.. Backup... Before you do ANYTHING, after you unlock the device boot TWRP (don't flash it) and backup the device, then store it somewhere safe. Then you can flash TWRP and any ROM you wish.
Remember that we do not have a current firmware image, so going back to pure stock is a real PITA and re-locking the bootloader is currently impossible, so tread carefully.

first of all u need more research about u want to do, because theres no root on stock rom on moto g5 plus, u need to install TWRP and then install any rom and then flash the root app
here in XDA exit some tool called moto g5 plus toolkit, firstof all just for people like u dont brick theirs phones and second, for being more simplyfied the process of root
good luck

You should first of all install this recovery: "philz touch recovery" Look for threads on this forum and youtube videos how to do it, follow this exactly and properly because this part you don't want to mess up.
When done with that you want to take a backup with "philz touch recovery" there is also guides and videos on how to do that.
Both this things are pretty easy but just be carefull you do them right.
When that is done you will install your ROM, that is very easy. Download ROM to your SD card and use an app like "ROM customizer" to install the ROM. There might be different installs for different ROMS' all ROMs have their own guides, but most of them are pretty much the same.
Just read and you will know everything about how to do this very soon.

I don't think there is much to worry about.
The ROM you want to install supports your version. The recovery should do too.
Just make sure you do everything right when installing the recovery and you should be fine.
Any mistake after that can be repaired with your recovery.
Root is all you need. You should not need to unlock anything else. And don't worry about KNOX.
If your bootloader is locked, then I don't know how to solve it. But I don't think it's locked, only a few service providers in the world lock the bootloaders.
If it is I'm very sorry!

I don't know how to see that beforhand. Just try to do the flash and you should see if it works or not.
If it's fail because it's locked you will notice and then nothing will be broken.
If it's not locked you will have a successful flash, which you will see.
I have read about other Canadians installing ROMS and flashing Recovery so I think you will have success!

The Canadian W8 ROM does not have a locked bootloader. It can be rooted, custom recovery can be installed and if you want, ROMs installed.
With Xposed Framework you don't really need custom ROM. Beauty of root is that you can use titanium backup to freeze dozens of bloatware apps from samsung and others, run Xposed, run other apps that need root, fix the stupid kitkat permissions on SD card, backup your ROM etc.
Once rooted you can also use a third party kernel that supports under or over clocking, depending on your need. Custom kernel developers work hard to get you better battery life.
One thing other poster didn't mention is that when you install custom recovery it will trip Knox. Please don't ask what that is. Look it up and decide. Your warranty will be void.

To flash a Custom ROM there is no need to root, the only thing you need is to install a custom recovery, TWRP is very good. After you have installed TWRP or any other custom recovery, you have to put on your SD Card the ROM that you want to install, and install it from the custom recovery.

Rooting from within 23.5.A.0.570 Marhsmallow discussion

Anyone know of a way to root 23.5.A.0.570 from within the ROM?
Of course you can create custom firmware with Flashtool, but is there other way?
Kingroot is useless at the moment.
Hi,
I've upgraded from Lollipop to MM yesterday, but with TFT rom, without root.
Then: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/kernel-advanced-stock-kernel-t3347413
But only works with unlocked bootloader.
I've just unlocked my bootloader and installed this kernel using ADB. But, FULL WIPE in my Z2 :'(
Don't know if was the kernel or just the fact to unlocked the bootloader.
Anyway, make a full backup

Its because of the Bootloader u unlocked.. Unlocking bootloader first time will erase ur all datas..
And there is no need to unlock ur bootloader. Simply go back to KK or LP then root it and install recovery. After that flash a pre rooted MM rom.. Simple
And i think after unlocking bootloader u have lost some Sony features.. Did u make ur TA (DRM) Key backup..??

Are you using Xposed? because after many re-flashes and reinstalls on different things, I think, that for me, few of the xposed mods were causing the loops. For example I miss the immersive mods in games etc and I simply can't get it to work correctly as it was, no matter what I try, so different xposed mods related mostly to that were causing the loops for me. I am currently reflashing at the moment

it happened to me too, tried almost 5-7 flashin via recovery from many stock lollipop n kitkat, but always get looping boot, i could get in to the language choose screen, but when i touch the screen, it will restart n always like that. but yesterday i successed flashing via recovery. what i was doin is, flash the germany generic ftf 264, then root via kingroot n recovery (i choose twrp). then use the zip MM from a thread, the back name of the zip is 1281-9709_R3D, then i flashed the 3 files for root from MM beta thread, finally i flashed bootloop fix from the same thread. then boom, get in to the boot and finished normally

Oh crap, I knew it, but in the Sony developer's website doesn't show this information...
About DRM, I know I have the backup, but I don't know where, lol. Anyway, in the same topic, there's a procedure to recover the features.

3 easy questions about m9+

Hi,
i just bought a new HTC one m9 plus but before rooting the device i was trying to find any RUU compatible with it. 3 easy questions:
1) is the root guide compatible with android marshmallow?
2) i have an htc_hiau_m1_tuh1, OS 2.27.401.1., is there any way to maybe backup the original recovery and ROM before instaling TWRP or something similar?
3) Do i still have to pay for S-OFF? Any other way to go back to locked bootloader after rooting if i need warranty? Thanks

1. Yes you can root easily... U just need the latest supersu zip
2. Dont know about that but taking a full backup of your system right after installing twrp (before flashing anything) will fulfill your needs ie. Going back to full stock to update the rom
3. As far as i know sunshine is the only way to s-off at this moment.... I checked 2 months back im sure there were no free ways at that time

You must be PURE stock to take an OTA update, or it will fail and bootloop... Flash a rom if you wish.
What i did was make a back up of everything just incase and then look up the ota version on your phone and get it in the rom section and look up twrp flashable OTAs and just flash it. you might lose root but its easy to get back if you flash magisk again.
You can found the right guide here:

Of the current version? lol, no, we wish... we are averaging 3-6 months behind OTA releases for full ROM images, if we get them at all. Moto does not officially provide them, so they have to be leaked somehow, and sources are completely dried up yet, but it's getting there. :/

You can't be rooted with a locked bootloader so your question is obsolete.
You can apply to OTA with an unlocked bootloader.
You can't if you're rooted or changed anything else in /system or /vendor.

Thanks for the reply. Very clear! Please I need more help. The thing is...I don't want the oreo ota right now. This is my mother's phone so I don't want any problem. Nougat is just fine for now. So I need to stop the upgrade notification spam. I believe I must unlock BL, then root, then freeze the upgrader app. Is that correct? I can't force stop the app. That's for now.
I've read bad reviews about oreo battery drain and other stuff. That's why I'm trying to avoid it.
If someday I want it, maybe will install some rom.
Thanks bro.
EDIT. Does this make sense? Or should I stay stock everything and take the ota/ignore the spam everyday?
EDIT 2. Another question. What happen if I take the oreo ota, and i don't like it. Can I unlock BL, root, install some nougat rom, as a pseudo downgrade?

Oreo ist absolutely fine, no problems with it.
I haven't heard of any issues like increased battery drain, for me nothing changed at all regarding battery and the rest is also working flawlessly.
It would be a lot of action to unlock and root the device just to stop the updater service.
If you don't have any other plans that need root privileges I recommend just taking the OTA (s).
If you want to run another ROM later you can always unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, root the device and install any kind of custom ROM, Nougat, Oreo or Pie. There are also TWRP flashable stock firmwares which make it easy to move between different stock versions.

That's good. A pseudo downgrade is possible. Thanks man. I'll think about it. And yes, the root privileges is just for stopping the updater.
Cheers
EDIT. Man, are you sure about this? Taking the Oreo Ota, and in the future unlock BL, root and install whatever rom?

Yes I am.
Just check some of the custom ROM threads, there are some that need stock Nougat as base but the most of them need Oreo. For custom ROMs there are no up/downgrading problems, that's only the case for stock firmwares.
And as said above, there are TWRP flashable stock builds that doesn't have these problems too and will bring you to whatever stock firmware you want, not just pseudo. (Here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5...o-twrp-flashable-stock-builds-coming-t3830482 )
So if you're on stock Oreo after unlocking the bootloader and flashing TWRP all options are open for you. Just don't forget to make a full nandroid backup incl. EFS and persist before you flash anything.
