Way to Increase 4G signal? - Sony Xperia L1 Questions & Answers

Hi recently got an xperia l1 but have an issue with it, download/upload speed, it seems I'm only getting 100KB speeds, back in November the network in the area was upgraded and was getting 10MB speeds now with the new phone getting 100kb unusable even for netflix app as it closes due to slow connection.
Is there anything I can do software wise to boost signal or something that maybe causing issues that I'm unaware of?
I've called the network operator and they told me to change a few settings but did not make any difference. I was using a motorola g3 at 10mb sec.

Same for me, in areas where i should be getting full 4G reception, I am bearly getting one bar

Hmm think I might have a similar issue. Maybe it's after the February security patch. we'll have to wait for march and see.

Froyo Reception

One of my main complaints with the Nexus One in general is 3G reception. It's not where it should be when compared to other phones (G1, myTouch, etc.). How are people fairing with 3G reception after the Froyo update? Is it looking better?
No change for me.
Thanks for your input. I do believe the issue is related to antenna placement, i.e. the design of the phone, so I guess this is never really going to be corrected.
It's not a major issue though depending on your area, I suppose.
My reception has improved, actually, an area where I previously got no signal - at lease gives me 1 or 2 bars without going out. That was only in that certain spot though, it was never a problem anywhere else.

Is that simply EDGE signal or 3G signal?
No change for me. Still crap reception at my house =\

Oh sadly its EDGE.. but I mean, its something for an area that usually would simply be nothing.
I have slightly better signal as well.
Comes and goes... more fluctuation than before...... other than that, no real problems. Though, I have noticed I can upload a few things with upload links online now.... only music, pics and voice recorder eclipse, but here's to a developer making (or updating) a file browser that includes a plugin for the browser to upload anything...
I actually had a real problem with reception when I never used to.
constant edge connection when I always had 3G or H.
after flashing froyo my reception is better and I'm on 3G a lot more often like I used to be.
My 3G has always sucked on my Nexus.. even at my home I have to use Wi-Fi.
When I try to use 3G a lot of times the icon is present but I don't think I have any connection because if I go to the market it says something like "A network error has occured, retry or cancel" and also, I can't refresh the FaceBook feed.
Does anyone have this problem? Or is there a way to fix it?
Mine have gone up some...
<<--Tethering
noticeably improved here, thou no more "H" doesnt seem to hiccup anymore
p.s loving the froyo so far, better voice clarity also , only thing i miss is trackball wake
How do you guys reach such high speeds ? The highest my 3G DL speeds have hit is 600 kb/s pre-FroYo ...
much better reception for me
My house is borderline edge/3g and i would say it has gotten worse... im seeing more GPRS lately but w/e I use wifi while i am at home anyway...
Mine 3g actually seems worse after updating to froyo/2.2. I'm getting edge in places I used to get 3g but I will do some further testing

i have better reception, at least on edge. now, i can actually get a signal in my apartment, most of the time, where as before, it was hardly ever.
Everything is working the same, if not better for me AT&T nexus one btw
the new froyo radio is 4.06 and its way better then 4.04, atleast in my personal case. signal is stronger and for once I am actually seeing a little 3g indoors.

Horrible data speeds in Philly burbs

With stock Rom back in August I was hitting 5.3 Mb/s download speeds. Now I'm barely hitting .5 consistantly. I did some Nandroid restores and retested. All were the same crappy speeds.
No radio changes to date that I know of. Running Eugene's latest Frankin-whiz. Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I'm afraid I can't be much help with solving the problem bit I am seeing the same issue here in central utah. I was getting speeds close to 2 mbps than I rooted, applied the lag fix, applied the gps fix (which didn't work any way), and now I get half a meg of I'm lucky. First time I tested I got .05 mbps....how do you check data usage to see if you are over the 10 gig limit where tmo throttles you?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Same here in Colorado Springs. Latest FrankenWiz Rom. Checked data usage, and only at 1.3 G, as I mainly use wifi. Thought it was just me
I live in Philly around old city and I constantly pull 3mbps down and 1 mbps up. The city is where its at.

NANDROID completely crippled my speed. I restored from a NANDROID backup and it ****ed up everything. Not sure if it was the lagfix I removed prior but either way, restore with ODIN to JI2.
See, I'm still on the stock rom though, so I wonder if it was the lag fix. I may try reversing the lag fix, than retesting to see if it is any better.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well, I just got home, (I live about 10 miles from work, which is where I did my last test) and now I am pulling 3 mbps down and 1 mbps up....no changes at all to my phone. Makes me wonder if it's a network issue. I tested my wifes vibrant (which is still 100% stock) and it was only pulling .88 mbps down and .90 mbps up....
*Boggle*
I never applied any lag fix mainly because Eugene's roms are fast enough and I give a damn about benchmarks. My first nandroid has a record of my speedtest, just cant reproduce the speeds.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
It may just be a network issue. I live in Seattle and usually pull over three downtown, but occasionally it'll force me over to Edge, then an hour later I'll be back on 3G. What sucks for me though is I can only pull about 1.5 - 1.8 in my apartment, but literally two blocks away I can pull 5-6 consistently.

Yeah, my WiFi has no issues at all and I can constantly pull great speeds off it. The data coming off the network is what is spotty at best for me, usually on the low side.
tmobile speeds on the vibrant is absolutely horrible in north Philadelphia. I get like 999k or 1gb download if i hold it in the air. When I used the hd2 rooted with android, I got like 2 to 3 gb.. so it's obviously the phone not being a good signal/data grabber. It's samsung's fault.. Nobody had better reception that Motorola in my opinion.. their phones always get good reception. Just my opinion through testing

Just got off a chat with TMO, they said one of the local towers has been down for a while. Im not sure if that makes me feel any better but at least there is a known problem instead of the "everything looks good from here" answer I was expecting. Id rather have a tower down and crappy speeds than crappy speeds with no tower down. just have to wait and see.

No working GPS? No problem. No froyo? No problem. Bad reception? Problem

First off I'd like to say I'm thankful for everything the devs here do. I've tried the 3g fix and it didn't do anything, so now I'm just curious if there is anything else out there that fixes it.
I'm on the newest DL09 and the problem is still there. Bad reception. I'm serious when I say I get full 3g bars maybe 1% of the time, and I'm dead center in a verizon 3g area. I've never seen a signal jump around as much as on the fascinate. It will switch between 3g and 1x constantly throughout the day, and when it's on 3g it looks like the bars are dancing all day long because they just jump around.
My original Droid will have a steady 5 bars pretty much all day. Fascinate...not even close. It's getting ridiculous actually. I can download updates for apps on my droid no problem, but I actually wait til I get home on my wifi to download updates on my fascinate. I constantly get "stuck" loading a page on the net because of the ridiculous reception.
Now my question is...is there any fix out there that actually works that I might have skipped over? Good reception is a HUGE thing, especially when I'm dead center in a 3g area, and the fascinate doesn't have it. I'm thinking about selling it in the next few days because it's absolutely crazy.
People complain all day long about the GPS and no froyo...and I'm actually confused as to why many do not complain about the reception. That's the biggest issue with the phone IMO.
Thanks for any help.
Have you actually tried contacting Verizon about it? It sounds like you've got an antenna issue, which should be pretty easily addressed with a phone swap.

I'm assuming you tried the reprogramming codes?
http://www.ehow.com/how_4532332_reprogram-verizon-phone.html
probably the 1st thing you tried, but just checking. I know for me, i went from being in the -102 range (1 bar) to -89 range (2 to 3) at work. Also at home i went from -92 to -51 (MAX)
You did option 2 correct?
Just did option 2 and it seems to have done nothing. Going back and forth between -96 and -101
If you dont see people compalining about reception, its largely due to the fact that the phone doesnt really suffer from reception issues. If I were you, I'd call verizon and make a formal complaint about the hardware restricting your usage, I'm sure they will work with you.
I'm a sales rep at a Verizon corporate store, 4 of my co-workers have Fascinates and we ALL experience a MAJOR difference in signal quality compared to co-workers with Droid X's and Droid 2's...
There's a five page thread on droidforums (fascinate section) about every single person in that thread having reception issues on the fascinate. And if you do a "fascinate reception issue" search on google, there are threads everywhere about that.
I just have a feeling everyone is focused on froyo and GPS so that's why reception isn't brought up much. I highly doubt, with as many people that have this problem, that it's just a problem on some of the galaxy s phones.

Yeah it's very frustrating.
What's even more frustrating is even when I get 4 full bars I only get -89 on the mobile signal widget..that's far from max reception.
I've never had reception problems per se but I have full bars and 73 dbm. Also for some reason my 3g download rate is nerfed. Earlier today on speed test got 63 kbps and 462 ping dunno why. Mostly hovers in the 300kbps range

I've had two phones now, and they both have very poor signal strength. Comparing my Fascinate to a friends Droid, sitting just a few inches apart, he had a dbm in the mid to high -70's, while mine was in the high -90's.
If you're in a solid coverage area, it gets fine reception and you're not likely to see the problem, but as you travel into a lower signal area, the Fascinate trails off very, very sharply. Even though I live in an area with supposedly blanket coverage, my house is towards the bottom of a small hill and I typically get zero or 1 bars on the display, every once in a while 2, but it'll drop back to 1 or 0 as soon as I pick the phone it.
The Fascinate does have a very week antennae design.
I rarely see 3 or 4 bars...come to think of it, I don't think i've ever seen 3 or 4 bars. This is when I'm in an area which should definitely have excellent coverage.
OP: do you have actual symptoms of poor signal like slow down/up load or dropped calls?
My speed tests when i have 1bar 3G are about 800Mbits up and 500Mbits down. Never dropped a call (rarely make calls, though). I have read that some folks suspect that the Fascinate has reporting issues? I don't know...but since I'm not seeing horrible speeds I've tried ignoring the fact that its always reporting 1-2 bars.
Kind of similar to the TWoS thing. I chased this one for a little bit too before dismissing it as a reporting issue (for now).
I originally was upset about the reception but came to realize that the office building I work in is built like a bunker. Other then when I am in the center of the building I get good reception, at my desk near a window I get 1-3 bars. However anytime other then when I am in this building I almost always have full bars.
However I have noticed that when I am in my office what ever bars I get my friends droid gets one more. But when it comes down to that it isn't Verizon...again the problem is with Samsung.
Hey guys,
what if I did option 1 instead of option 2 in *228 reprogramming?
On another note, my 3g indicator constantly disappears in verizon hotspot areas, it is really quite the annoyance.
Are you on a stock kernel?

Negative, I'm on Dl09 supah clean with adry's 12/30 test kernel.

The reception for my Fascinate isn't spectacular. I don't know how it ranks among smart phones, but there is a definite difference between it and my chocolate 8550. In known holes in vzw's coverage I occasionally lose signal, but I don't use it as a phone enough to drop many calls.
However, I spend the majority of my time in strong signal environs, so it doesn't really come up as an issue for me, and I just accept it. It will be a decision factor for my next phone though.
Maybe others have a similar situation: worse yes, but liveable.
Swyped w/ XDA App. When in doubt, mumble.
I have noticed the signal over the past 24 hours has been jumping all over the place like Verizon may be running tests or something. The drop being very consistent intervals of no bars but still 3g.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
My brother has Fascinate as do I and out of the Box his got 2 more bars than mine and his almost always has more signal.
Remember this was before I started rooting and all that.

Anyone else having slow WiFi connection speeds?

I have been having issues with my phone where it seems to get VERY slow speeds on my home WiFi.
All other devices get very high speeds (eg. Laptop 300+ Mbps, OneplusOne 105Mbps, Nexus 5 60Mbps, Nexus 7 70Mbps).
My Moto X Pure though, for some reason, often gets very unstable speeds varying from 5Mbps to 40Mbps. There is rare occasion when it gets full speeds of 160+ Mbps, but not often.
Anyone else experiencing awkward slowness? It sucks when updating larger apps.

Yes. I see slow LTE speeds as well. I posted about it here and Motorola.com and of course no one had anything to say. Top speed at home on wifi is about 180 Mbps. Its rare I get that. I check it with the speed test app and maybe the 3rd time I try it will be at max speed. Normally I see about 50-60. I feel like my LTE speeds are way slower than what they used to be at home and at work. About half of what they were with my old Droid Turbo. Debating getting another one. Not sure if I got crappy antennas or what. I have nothing else to go on since no one else could give me any feedback.

Yes. I just noticed this yesterday. I'm doing more research but it appears unless I'm right on top of my router it sucks. I'm likely going to be sending back my Pure to moto over this as soon as I confirm other phones do much better (pretty sure my other ones do but need to do back to back comparison of them).

Initial indications are that it's got abysmal 5.8 ghz performance beyond maybe 15 feet. Much worse than other devices. Very good though on 2.4 only.
Further comparisons seem to indicate it might be on par with other portables. Dunno for sure. Still investigating. Just noticed it as it can get really, really bad on 5.8 while still connected.
I'm having the worst WiFi speeds imaginable right now, while my one plus has great speeds on the same WiFi. Any solutions for this?

I noticed that my Moto X drops WIFI connectivity every few seconds when I'm in a particular area of the house and the phone's Bluetooth is on. My Wife's N5, N7 and my old N4 work OK so it's definetly something to do with the phone.
Actually, I was checking out my network the other day, and was surprising surprised at the actual connection speed it was reading. Laptop gets maybe 650mbps connection in the same location. Behind 2 walls about 60ft away from Asus AC68 router. which hides behind a TV.
internet is local company, 50 up/50 down... down speed is about on par with other devices
I just got this phone yesterday and I've got to say I'm very surprised about it. It's very useful $300 phone and it does everything is $700 phones does. Sorry for bad grammar I'm using text-to-speech. But I've also noticed that if you switch to the 2.4 gigahertz you don't have the Wi-Fi issue for some reason it's only the 5 gigahertz

Cellular strength and throughput

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the LG V30's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.
I really like to know how is the cellular reception on this phone. In my V20, I think it's bad. It's the only con that I see on V20.

It's everywhere, I have an S8 & when I put my sim card in I get full bars and no issues in the exact same locations. I think I'm gonna return my V30 today actually, I had the same issues with my G6 & I'm hesitant to trust LG phones now, which is too bad because I love them.
Bars mean little because each manufacturer uses a different standard and different thresholds. One phones 3 bars is not the same as another. If you want to compare phones then you need the actual signal strength the phone is getting.
I think that this device does really well on T-Mobile in San Antonio Texas.
Get an Intel 7 Plus if you want to see just how good the V30 really is.
No, don't do that.
Seriously though, my calls are clear, my data is consistent and I can travel outside the major city.

You should think twice about returning it. Don't be too hasty because it's probably your location or network provider and not the phone. You need to download an app to check the actual signal strength in dB and not look at bars. They mean nothing. I use Signal Check Pro.

I'm as impressed by the low ping speed (20ms) as the the download speed. Wow. Lower pings are less lag.
That's about the lowest I've seen for a cellular network connection. I've occasionally gotten low 20's with AT&T, but usually high 20s -- which is still fantastic compared to MVNOs (because they don't have direct connection to carrier's data servers). Your phone can FEEL like it has a slow connection, due to the high lag when you have higher ping speeds.
A lot of people only focus on download speeds, and they may have triple digit ping speeds (bad).
You will get lower ping speeds with an ethernet connection and even very good Wi-Fi, of course, but for cellular network that 20ms is the best test I've ever seen.

My Galaxy S8 works perfectly with my sim card in the exact same locations.
I've noticed that signal strength is a few dB lower than what I got on my LG G4 (3-5 dB). Not a big deal, even at home where I'm unfortunately in kind of a fringe area. Throughput doesn't seem to be affected much.
No issues on this end. Latency is always nice and quick, networks and radios switch very quickly, and knowing it will only get better with 600MHz rollout and 5G just makes me happy.
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/3315082329
LTE just doesn't want to work for me for some reason. No methods of fixing it that I've tried helped so far so I may try ordering a new SIM card from my carrier. Quite disappointing so far but maybe it's not my V30 to blame
I have two phones. Oneplus X and V30. In the same place on Oneplus X i have LTE signal with strength 85-95 dBm but on V30 I have 100-108 dBm ;/
FWIW, I have an LGH931 on AT&T since mid-December. I live in San Francisco with lots of difficult terrains (urban canyons, hills, etc.). I still have an HTC 10 and never worried about cell reception. Yes, the bars are generally lower on the V30, but it doesn't mean anything. I use LTE Discovery to measure the -dbm signal strength. The V30 has a problem with switching bands quickly and the thresholds are set to low. One bar/no bars seems to indicate -120dbm and barely enough for reliable calls or consistent data. I had two events when calls came in over wifi at my home, an indicator of low/no cell signal levels. Never happened with the HTC 10 before. A friend of mine traveled to Kingman, AZ recently and had a terrible time, plenty of dropped calls. He returned his US998 version. I believe generally the problem is with AT&T and the V30 radio settings.
AT&T LG V30 here.
Very disappointed by the signal strength and radio behavior of the device in general.
At home my Blackberry gets -92dBm and the V30 gets -103 dBm.
At work my Blackberry gets -98dBm and the V30 gets -114dBm!
Of course I went through all the getting a new SIM card, holding it a certain way and so on but no difference whatsoever.
This is the best phone I ve ever had, unfortunately the radio settings or hardware or both do not do it any justice.
From what I read it can be simply fixed or improved if AT&T and LG alter the threshold band settings, since other variants do not suffer from the same issue.
Hopefully an update is going to happen soon or I am not sure what I am going to do.
Im getting regular 150-200 mbps on tmobile in Florida. Almost never under 80 and ive noticed a big increase in signal reliability. Very happy with the cellular signal on this phone.
