I wish we knew to what extent it was water resistant though... like I can use my Nexus 5 in the rain and it's fine.
We need to know the depth at which the phone is resistant to water. I can't imagine it can handle any submersion unless it has a USB slot cover

Exactly.. Most phones are water resistant to some extent but I'd like to find out to what extent the nexus 6 is... The USB covering dosn't need a flap since Motorola makes it so it probably will utilise nano coating technology instead of closures... so it may be able to handle submersion!

Motorola coats their phones with a water repellant nano coating that while it's not designed to be fully submerged for any length of time, it will protect against sweat, rain, humidity, accidental spills... that type of stuff.

Agreed & well said!
Basically, this phone can survive minor spills and whatnot but will not survive being dunked in water for long periods of time.
Video by Erica Griffin. She does amazing and very in-depth reviews on products. Granted, the device in that video is the Moto X but the Nexus 6 will probably feature a similar water-resistant coating.

With a N4? I have to carry around a portable battery charger for most of my extended activities (anything lasting more than 2 hours of rigorous Ingress activity).
That said surprisingly enough a lot of people are happy with using Galaxy Note phones when playing Ingress, claiming the large screen makes actions easier and that the battery life outperforms expectations. With that in mind I am hoping the same can be said for the N6 since it has similar properties.
Either way, I will still have my battery packs. I just hope they will become a less frequently needed accessory when I get my hands on the N6!

generally it is more water resistant than waterproof....my headphone jack malfunctions after going in water for a while because it thinks there's a headphone inserted when there isn't. Also my speakerphone doesn't work for a good couple of hours. So yeah, I wouldn't advise using it under water for long or at all, but if it does fall in a puddle or toilet with the cover closed it should be ok.

Oh yes..... I went to a resort with my kids and they took around 300 pics in the swimming pool the whole day and my phone is still perfectly fine...

Seals on waterproof devices usually need to be checked once a year, as they degrade. And you should treat the phone according to the IP67 specs, which surely is not much fun. Something like water depth max. 1m/3ft, and no water current and no quick moves, this is especially important, while holding the phone.
So, not safe, but possible, with a chance for a total loss.

I jumped in the lake with it in my hand, and then stayed in and swam around with it for about 15mins. Recorded a few videos during. Was pretty cool to watch video of jumping and then see the water swooshing around the phone and then the view underwater and under a dock.. Almost a Little eerie

AFAIK, the rating is for submerging the device to up to 1.5m up to half an hour, not to operate the device under water.
MInd, there are no physical buttons to operate by just using the camera shutter if the app has been set-up prior to diving in ...

Not pressing buttons,just let it dry by charging wirelessly to let the phone heat up. If you ruined it, I'm sure you will find out within the next few hours to days. I think you will be fine because others have used the vol(since that's the only button to work under water)

Not meant to be operated under water is just hilarious lol u can actually can press the volume buttons under water to take photos. Unfortunately I think your device is defective but like everyone said wait til it dries.

I don't have wireless charger, can I charge it normally?
Charging works fine though.
Now my phone, Volume button works fine now.
A couple of issues:
SD card doesn't get recognized anymore, no error message.
Multi-task button seems pressing itself.
Condensation inside the front camera.

Not good, if charging seems to work...I would get the phone as hot as possible to get rid of moisture or leave sd card open but you have to ge that moisture out before it takes a toll on the inside electronic.
You're an idiot. No where did anyone ever say the phone is water proof. It is water resistant. What that means is that under certain circumstances it can make contact with water and still function after being taken out. That is not the same as using it underwater. You don't deserve a phone this expensive you buffon.

Samsung doesn't call it "water proof." Water resistant is the strongest claim you'll see.

No prob, and I wonder if you fried the card not sure of which brand you got but I know sandisk at one time made shock/water/temperature proof like my old 64gb ultra was that. I bought a sandisk 200gb I'm thinking has the same

While I agree with you that it is not wise to use these devices as underwater cameras, it's not surprising that people do so, when Samsung are doing the exact same thing in their official commercials. Have a look at these examples:

Just to be clear, I DO NOT encourage people to follow these examples as they seem like good ways to ruin an expensive device Be careful, as wear and tear, manufacturing defects or just a drop can affect the water resistance as well.
Although I can also say that I had the Xperia V and Xperia Z3, which both had lower IP ratings than the S7, and I used these under water lots of times with no issues at all. Even after the glass back of the Z3 was shattered from a drop I rinsed it under the tap to clean it about once a week.

They really do encourage the usage of the device under water.
I myself have only exposed the device to shower water.
And dropped it once in the bath, Am happy to live with the fact it will survive an accident rather than to get used to using the device in water.
A slight disappointment, as one of the purchase reasons was for some nice water park snaps and pool snaps on holiday.
Too expensive to just have a gamble with so many users reporting defected units.
Makes me question if the Water resistance is as tight as they advertise
(A recent review company just tested the Water resistance of the S7 and it failed awaiting official statement from Samsung)
Or there is a number of users who have taken the water proofing to the extreme.
Ill use my device on the principle its water tight, So that water will drip off it.
This will do me enough to use the device in rain or shower or any other types of water like this.
I just wont go submerging it

Anyway, for me the IP rating of this phone is a bonus. It's good to know that the phone should be able to handle my using it in a sudden downpour or if I accidentally drop it down the toilet (not something I've done in over 20 years of owning mobile phones mind). But to deliberately take it underwater, regardless of what confusing messages Samsung are sending out, is simply asking for issues that don't need to be asked for.

It's probably the SD card that got damaged from the water, not the phone. Replace the card.

Well yes. Samsung said "water resistant", not "water proof", which means it's supposed to resist against water under certain conditions (up to 1.5m for 30mins), not function under it. The capacitive screen and capacitive buttons work with anything that holds an electrical charge, including pool water because it contains ions in it, so that's why they were being pressed.
But indeed, you are right with about not intentionally doing anything out of the ordinary, trying to test the water resistance. It is more of a safety feature, and Samsung is mistaking by advertising otherwise (they don't always do this).
I tried it several times - dived under water and take pictures with it or videos and everything is working just fine. But as I am reading more and more things about non water proof s7 edge I am starting to think that next time I better wont take my phone under water.

I swum with the edge several times and never had a problem with it. I took some beautiful pictures under water. My experience is no guarantee for everybody

I didnt swim, I submerged it underwater for 4 seconds. Not more than that. it wasnt deep. just under the surface,
I didnt stop people from buying it, its the best samsung phone i have ever owned. I just wanted to caution them to not try submerging it without any reason, just to be safe. i dont think i said it will be the same for everybody. I shared my scary experience. thats all?

It wasn't meant to be used underwater. It's kinda like a safety feature if you accidentally dropped it in water and quickly react to taking it out. Pretty sure pool water has various salts so that kinda factors in too.

gessus wessus... doesn't matter what word or definition is used, the s7 phone has good gaskets and can exceed the ipx ratings stated which is total submersion for the defined period of time.
The next time you spend a weeks wage on a water resistant phone, briefly inspect the ports and make sure they are sealed and put the phone underwater for the stated amount of time and if it breaks get a refund because it's defective, if it works, then you're good to go.
mine has survived the pool and the beach many times ( I spray water repellent on it for salt water use, the non electrical conducting lubricants, before and after, e.g inox marine, wd40 isn't as good but cheaper and comes in a tiny pen style dispenser).

There are also many ways to damaged or destroy the seals in the s7 edge.
Like salt water, water with chlor, bending the phone in tight jeans....
I can vouch for the high quality water resistance. Even with the S5 I had 3 good years of using it as a snorkeling camera, shower radio and regularly washing it under the tap to freshen it up. It became a hand me down to my little cousin as soon as the S7 was released. I now do the same with my S7 all the time, it's even more water resistant than the S5 and it was advertised as an underwater camera. It works flawlessly. I even rinse it off to cool it down after long sessions of VR. It drops from 35 degrees Celsius to 25 in 5 seconds. Stop being so paranoid. The phone is really as water resistant as it claims to be. The only reason why it's not "water proof" is because there is no industrial standard by which you can call something water proof.
Well a friend of mine left his S7E in a hottub at 80c and 1.5m underwater for anhour phone still works just fine.

Sooo, I did test the phone half submerged in a gently flowing river and I can tell you that it isn't waterproof under that condition. Condensation under the camera lens showed up within 1/2 an hour. Screen started going purple within hours. Take this as an example of a real world test.

There's always the small chance of water getting through especially as you use the device over few months with some deterioration. Just check your sim tray seal and make sure it's all good. And remember water damage isn't covered under warranty. Enjoy it anyway you like.

haha, it sounds like washing clothes, i just worry when i take photo on a river or sea, if it is drop into water, i hope i took it up and no problem at all

There's always the small chance of water getting through especially as you use the device over few months with some deterioration. Just check your sim tray seal and make sure it's all good. And remember water damage isn't covered under warranty. Enjoy it anyway you like.

I personally used it even at the beach. No harm done. Have it in mind that the 1.5m is pressure related so pressure is the main issue here not depth itself. So be careful on how you position your phone in the water and by all means don't apply in unnecessary pressure on the phone like diving and holding your phone or throwing the phone in the water from a height etc. Its all about usage.

Just remember that the phone was tested and certified for 1.5M at 30minutes under a very controlled environment. When you take it out and about in a pool or beach or under a faucet there's many factors that could lead to water entering into sensitive components. The speaker and Mic grill/mesh is still semi permeable and enough pressure from a faucet or even steam can pass through and accumulate.

Also, the water they use it supposedly "pure" water. Most water we have around us has extra chemicals in it...
Most tap waters have chlorine in it and some other chemicals (like flouride) though this is dependant on location.
Sea water has salts in it.
Over time the rubber seal that makes these phones IP68 rated WILL deteriorate. This can be sped up by these additives in the waters around us...
