"No service" on notification bar. (J500FN) [Solved] - Samsung Galaxy J5 Questions & Answers

Hi,
Yesterday, I used the phone like normal(little bit of listening music and media etc) and drained the battery, so it shut down. Connected the charger fairly later and it started charging. In a few hours switched it on and saw that there was this white stop sign on the notification bar. Figured it might be a matter of a reboot since things like that happen from time to time. When rebooted in the morning the sign was still there.
I tried all the firmwares from Sammobile available for the region and nothing got it away, tried LineageOS and then used SmartSwitch to restore the thing.
I also got to the ServiceMode using dial code:
Code:
*#011#
and it says there that:
Code:
MIPI DEVICE FAIL. DEVICE MID=0x20c, PID=0x008
Googled a bit and it seems that the easiest way to fix this is changing the motherboard.
Some more background if it matters: the device asks for a sim pin and hasn't been dropped. Just happened out of the blue.

Solved
Hi again,
I managed to fix the issue. Seems like this is a common problem but I didn't find anything on why it happens or is, just some sites I personally haven't heard before had some same content how to fix the J500M but the same chip was faulty on the J500FN.
What I did was: re-heat the chip shown on the pictures a bit with a hairdryer that had a really small radius(kinda like put a cone on it because didn't want to heat the whole board up). And that seemed to do it. It probably will break again, since it was and is still faulty and for that reason broke on the first place. Also if you're advanced enough you can try to solder it, but that seems to be for the professionals really.. One little connection in the wrong place and you fry the damn thing!
The safe bet is to replace the motherboard(which I don't currently have money for) but that does the trick for me now. Also if your warranty still lasts you might wanna take it to the Samsung Service shop where they should replace or re-solder the chip safely onto the mainboard for free. Or change it alltogether.
What also sealed the deal for me was that the grille that was on the opposite of the chip what was faulty had this weird burn-mark thingy on it, so thats why the whole thing happened..
The pictures of the faulty component: Thegsmsolution.com
I hope that anyone who struggles in the future with this (or in the past and still hasn't found a way to fix it) can fix it now.

Screen fading to white ongoing issue- MONEY AHEAD!

Hi all,
I need help, suggestions, anything with an issue I've had for a while. Since the time I started loading WM6 the screen has been randomly fading to white. I have LSVW latest rom 22/4 SE and 1.40.10 radio and 1.40oli although it doesn't matter what rom you load. I tried going back to WM5 and its better but now still fades to white as well.
on advise from oli and legolas I purchased a new battery but still have the same issue.
I have dropped my phone once which resulted in a crack to the right of the DEL/CR keys so could it be a HW issue and if you think so is it one I could open up the phone and fix?
Any and all help appreciated
IN FACT IF SOMEONE CAN RESOLVE THE ISSUE I WILL DONATE SOME CASH TO THEM!
test
Im updating to
LVSW 4-23 Full, Radio 1.40.30.00, SPL 2.10.Oli, IPL 1.04
seeing if any difference comes out.
This is not the first time this issue has been reported:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-301003.html
The conclusion is that it's hardware related. It may be as simple as one of the internal ribbon connectors having a less than firm connection. It may be brought on my anything from physical movement or pressure to internal pressure if the device gats warm. However, it is possible that there is a failing component. IMHO, a case of take it for replacement/repair or first check connectors if your brave and not worried about a warranty.

HHmmm interesting thread .. the only issue i have out of that is the fade to white one.
Maybe Hardware .. i got the phone off ebay and now it has a crack in it .. so i dare say it isnt under warranty any more. (even though its a max of 6 months old).
It may also be software. I experienced the WSOD on my JASJAM when playing with the GPS-related DLL's. Once this problem appeared when switching on the camera. The screen would turn white and soft reset would not fix this, only power off/on would sort it out. Seems that the drivers do not reset (some of) the hardware to a known state on boot.
Had EXACTLY the same problem. Hoped it would be a software problem. Hard-reset a few times to no avail. Upgraded to a couple of the WM6 ROMs. No change. I did notice that when it was cool it tended not to happen, but after being on the phone a couple minutes or using the PDA for a while, it would do it AGAIN.
One weird thing I noticed was that if I did a Soft-reset and held down the Left Soft-key, I could "force" it to fade to white on start-up! VERY WEIRD.
I finally bit the bullet, and sent it back to Telstra to get it sorted. Didn't want to void warranty myself.
It has been just over 2 weeks since I sent it off, and They have sent this reply...

Hi
This phone is currently waiting on a part which was ordered yesterday. Some parts have already been issued but needs further repair.

Hello, I am emailing about an I-Mate JASJAM phone I sent for repairs early last week (tel # xxx ).
Can you please update me as to status of this repair, as the Telstra shop did not provide me with a second phone while I await return/repair/replacement of the phone.
Thanks,

So, I guess it IS a hardware problem. But then again, that kind of reply, sounds a bit "dodgy" as it doesn't seem to "technical" does it?
Hope this helps.

Their reply was not very technical - does not surprise me however. The people who repair these devices are usually faced with some component/connection/screen or a m/board that needs replaced. They often fail to take account of something as basic as the case pressing on the screen or other components - particularly when device is warm. So they replace the component they think is faulty and then discover the problem is still there. With this issue in particular I think that there are no faulty components just the case is a fraction of a millimetre too tight for the internal components and hence swapping out parts can have no effect. With this fault I advise people to go for a replacement not a repair if possible.
NB: This issue should not be confused with white screen that may appear after installing particular software or when an application crashes, or when the flashing of a new ROM goes wrong! The hardware issue arises most commonly when the device gets warm or put another way goes white after maybe 10 minutes of use and will continue to go white even after hard reset.

I have this same problem! =(
My phone screen recently (4-5 days ago) started to go white. I never saw this happen with my own eyes but when i picked up my phone and its sleeping i push the power button to get to an all white screen. I can hear noises when i touch the screen but no image other than white. I can solve this by removing the battery and putting it back in, then my scren works fine....its not verry often just like 1-3 times a day.
I want to try a hard reset but have a question first: My phone is unlocked by the ebay guy i got it from, will a hard reset lock my phone back to Cingular?
Next i want to try upgrading my ROM and Radio and anything else...im looking in the wiki for instructions on how to do this. Any help? What else shouls i upgrade?
Ive only had my Hermes for around 2 months so im new to much of this.
THanks!
I recently purchased a Used Imate Jasjam (Ex Telstra Australia) with this issue.
I pulled the unit apart, and reseated and pressed the Power and LCD Display Data Cables... attempting to ensure they were firmly fastened.
I then upgraded to LVSW's Latest WM6 Release.
I have had the Phone go to White once in that timeframe since. I brought it back by pressing the power button of, then one again.
I don't feel that it's really a "100%" Faulty Part... Because it works fine othertimes. It almost seems as if connections or a Data Cable has an Issue.
I'm intending tonight and using the Phone over the weekend to see if the issue continues to occur.
BAD NEWS!!
Well, got my phone back after a bit over 3 weeks I think? I kept ringing the repair center and emailing. Finally they said it was ready, and was sent back to the shop I bought it from. Rang the shop "no it's not here yet, we will ring you"... now the repair centre to the shop is a 20 min drive... on the 3rd, I rang again at 1pm and "no it's not here yet, we will ring you when it arrives." At this point I was really getting p*ed off. So I went to the shop, and demanded, and guess what was AT the Shop?!?!?!
Anyway, after 1 friggin day, I have lost the Red & Green phone buttons! As of tonight the whole bottom section no longer work, and the screen has gone white again.
The repair report listed 3 things replaced...one was a "bezel" another was a "poly" something. I will get the report a list the replaced bits if anyone likes, but their descriptions are kind of strange if ya ask me.
Anyway, I have to send the phone back for repairs again, which could take another 3 weeks +, which I think is completely PATHETIC OF TELSTRA, especially for the fact they dont give the same phone or even similar to "loan" while I wait for my defective $1300 phone to get "repaired"... (more like 'fiddled with' & "yeah, she'll be right mate"...
GRRRRR!!!!
My girlfriends phone was having the same problem. Try popping out your SD card and putting the phone into/out of sleep and see if that brings back a visible screen. Thats how we determined her situation was a hardware problem and not a problem with the rom.

Yes, sadly this is kind of predictable as I said in an earlier post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1233420&postcount=7
This is why, as I said, get a replacement not a repair if possible. My view is that the individual components are fine but connectors come loose or the heat generated causes pressure to be put on the screen etc So it's a problem with some cases and how the innards in some cases get squeezed. So off course changing the top poly board, connectors, bezel gasket, may by pot luck make a difference but is just as likely to make no difference at all.

Status Report:
After having my phone playing Video's Through the Night (My Way of a "Stress Test" to Generate Heat) I woke up the find the screen to be "almost completely" White.
Usually its gone completely, however in this instance I was able to see the icons through the whitewash.
I put the phone into sleep and back out and the Display is fine again.
Being that these phones are much easier to pull apart and put back together than my old JasJar I might to do some further experimentation.
I think the issue will have something to do with either one of the following
- Heat
- Pressure on the LCD from Parts Around it
- Faulty Ribbon or Power Leads to the LCD
My suggestions
- In the Case of Heat... I'll run the Same Test, with the Phone Directly in front of a small airconditioning unit I have.
- In the Case of Pressure, I'm going to look and see if I can place some extra Insulation Tape or Similar on the Phone to relieve this
- I wish I could find somewhere to buy the Replacement Ribbon Cables but I don't know where I can get them in Australia... any ideas?

We wait to see. Mind you one guy on these boards found he could get half an hour from his device if he put it in the freezer for a while - so I'm not sure that air-con will be strong enough!!!
Mike
Well Results.....
After pulling apart the unit and reconnected, I think I found my cause to simply be excess pressure.
I've removed the "Black Plastic" Micro SD Card from its Blanking Plate.
Since I've done this... not one White Screen Whatsoever.
I don't use an SD Card, so the issue is resolved for me, however it is very interesting.
Could be Pressure or Heat (Small Hole Might Increase Airflow/Allow for Greater Dissapation or something)
Hi folks,
i've also small experience with this "white screen" issue and just wanted to inform you about it.
I got the device from my former boss who did already complain about this "white screen" issue on his O² XDA trion with original ROM. (honestly i did not really believe him due to my experience with couple of other devices so after i got the device i was just wondering - ok back to the facts).
I installed on Friday the Windows Mobile VI Pro - BLACK 2.5 Release and until today it was running (as far as i remember expect one time) nearly perfect w/o white screens. About 45min ago, i flashed the device with BLACK 3.0 Release and got until now about 5-10 times a white screen.
I assume this is not a hardware ONLY issue but indeed very strange.
I'll go back to 2.5 and will look forward if i get again the white screen or it'll be ok.
Cheers so far

You are right to ask the question "is it hardware or software".
1
We know a white screens can arise if folk duff up flashing a new ROM.
2
We know there is a hardware caused white screen that comes and goes often when device gets warm.
3
But there maybe white screens caused by some kinds of crashing software or a buggy ROM etc
Crucially in terms of finding a cure will be distiguishing between these.
2 for most people is easy - take it back and get a replacement.
1 is a matter for the ROM upgrading and fixing boards
3 is a case of trying different ROMs testing 3 party software by selective installation until the problem starts or stops.
In your case I am worried that this is a number 2 device as it did sometimes get the problem before you flashed the ROM and now it's worse. It may only be worse because this particular ROM is generating more heat and consequently more white screens. (see explanations elsewhere).
I suppose if it's an occasional problem you might live with it but otherwise it's replacement at best and repair as a rather dodgy alternative.
Mike
Hey Mike,
well, before flashing the device with a custom ROM, in my opinion it was really difficult to use it.
By flashing it with V 2.5, it was very good usable and with V 3.0 it returned to become more unusable. Nevertheless, i upgraded 10min ago with HARD-SPL-V7 and it's running fine now (i've been wating with downgrading to V 2.5. If it returns to become unstable, i will downgrade to V 2.5 again.
I'll keep you informed.
yes for this particular "white screen" issue it will be useful to hear how things go - thanks
Mike
White screen - in my case definitely a hardware issue
Hi folks,
i was testing and playing around with my Hermes and today i found the problem (very funny because now i can't reproduce it anymore but just read ahead).
Today i was playing around and after pressing by accident on the case of the Hermes, the screen appeared disappeared and changed into white.
Please download the video i recorded from the attached link - you'll see that it was able to reproduce it by tapping on the case:
http://asuka.descipe.de/dphome/test/HTC_Hermes_White_Screen_issue.mp4
Please use VLC or MPC (additional codecs required) to watch the movie.
Honestly i'm not sure if this can be reproduced by anyone but this makes the whole situation much more clear.
Any feedback is welcome.
Cheers

Lets say I want to stop my phone from turning off..

Lets say I am sick and tired of my 8525 turning off on it's on randomly during the day and I have loaded 10 different roms all the way back to the stock one, I have ran it with NO aftermarket programs, I have replaced the battery, and I have added support to the sim card to make sure it isn't losing contact and still the phone turns off randomly on it's on.
Sometimes I have noticed that it will turn itself off if I slide the keyboard out (maybe 3 times out of 100 turn offs), but 97% of the time it will do it on it's on sitting on the desk untouched.
If I was going to take my phone apart, is there any ideas or general consensus to what parts might be causing the phone to turn itself off? Should I get a new sim card maybe?
Really sick and tired of my buddy with an Iphone throwing this bug in my face telling me what crap HTC is as well as missing calls.
If the phone is turning all the way off, over and over, then send it in for a replacement. If you mean the screen is just turing off after a certain amount of time, you can adjust that under: "Settings->System (tab)->Power->Advanced->then uncheck Turn off device if not used for x minutes. See if that helps, or maybe its just ur phone and you need a replacement. I sent mine in to ATT and got one back after my screen stopped turning on"white screen of death", heh. So it could just be a hardware issue that you cannot really solve urself...
The phone is turning all the way off on it's on. I have to boot it back up like I had just installed a battery or something.
I am out of warranty and do not want to pay for a refurbished phone since this is my third phone from them during the warranty already (and this ones been the best till now). I would rather someone tell me the board/part and I take it apart and fix it myself. I have the tools, the instruction manual in PDF someone posted a while back, a website with almost every internal part for sale, and experience taking small devices apart (ipods and such) and replacing items, I just want to know if anyone knew of which part could most likely be the part causing something like this before I start replacing things blindly. I plan to go ahead and take it apart and check ribbon cables since I want to replace the whole housing anyway.
Unfortunately, my D900 has the same problem with yours, it turned off when i just sending messages or just touching the screen, and my replacement battery is already on the flight, when i get it, i will test it again. Hopeful, i can get a sweat result~~
Mine doesn't seem to do it when it is in use. I have had to get in the habbit of looking at the LED on the phone to make sure it is still turned on. Gets real annoying trying to say the Iphone isn't all that people think, but then have this little problem and the fact I am on my third HTC product in the year time frame. But the others died within 30 days, this one has lasted 10 months thats why I want to keep it.
Well I think I figured it out. I took it apart and it looks like the black box that has the battery connectors to it and is soldered to the main board has broken loose. I am trying to fix it, but does anyone know how much the main board is if I need to replace it?

Help Please Hermes won't turn on.

ok so what happened was is that i dropped my phone although when i looked at it it seemed fine, not even a scratch, calling worked...but a couple of hours later i got no signal in this place although my dad had signal and we're on the same network and we have the same phone too. I received signal as soon as I left the place.
And here is where my problem comes, everything was working fine and i had my phone in my pocket for the whole day cause i was at school and after school i decided to take a look at the time, but my phone was off and wouldn't turn on, but i expected that it ran out of battery.
I got home and tried charging it, but nothing happened, so i decided to use my dad's battery (fully charged) it still wouldn't turn on, i've tried soft/hard resets still nothing.
can it be the hardware? what is broken? it won't turn on/won't charge/no led lights/no red led when charging without battery/ nothing so what is wrong please help.
Probably battery contacts... If you can see a crack, you might be able to resolder them and fix however the Hermes uses a multi layered board and if the break is there then you need a new mainboard, in a few words, your Hermes is toast....
is there any possible fix? if the board is broken, where can i get a replacement and instruction on how to fix? thanks :]
Find an old Hermes on ebay. If the screen doesn't work or something, DON'T get one with "No GSM", then you should be able to replace the Mainboard.
Find the HTC Service Manual here - http://michael-channon.spaces.live.com/PersonalSpace.aspx?_c02_owner=1
You need a size 6 torque key and a small flatbladed screwdriver to get the Mainboard. Pretty easy, I've taken my Hermes apart more times than I can count.
Cheers...
thanks for the help so far :]
but is there a site that just sells the part? cause i really don't want to end up buying a mainboard on ebay that ends up not working too.

Galaxy s4 almost bricked

Hello. I want to start off and say that even tho i used a lot of phones Samsung fits me bets. With that in mind i want to tell the story of my broken s4 i9505. I bought it new and used it about 2 years until i got and iphone 5s. The phone remaind in a drawer with the intention of selling some time but forgot about it, then i used the phone once a week or so paired with moto 360 because iphone could not connect and used the watch only for time .(bluetooth worked fine remember this). Anyway i decided to sell it and i had all my apps and accounts in there so i thought the fastest way was to factory reset it and make it fresh so i can sell it (rom was not stock at the moment, i have no ideea what rom it was). I sold it to a friend that told me he wanted to pair something with it thru bluetooth and bluetooth didnt work...i sayd that it wasnt possible because all i did was a factory reset and that couldn't damage anything. Things got worse as the phone was charging very very slow and if it got over 90% baterry would not respond to anything (red led at 90% and got to green when full but still no response from phone) and the only thing to do is to remove battery. Then i took the phone back, got it a new battery but that didn't changed anything, took it to some repairs shops that didn't ever hear about this problem, i had it chance the software but that didn't do anything. The problem i suspect it is and i saw a few other posts online was the bluetooth module would stop working for some reason and do this to the phone. Currently i don't know what to do with it and i don't want to sell it just for part for 50 euros or so. Also i read that the bluetooth module can't really be changed as a spare part because it's part of the motherboard and that means almost all the phone. Phone is in mint condition, i didn't damage it before the sell , the buyer didn't damage it or messed with the rom...Another thing i noticed is that in settings under bluetooth address says unavailable. Can someone please help me ? I can provide more information about serials and stuff if needed. Also wi-fi doesn't work now.
Mine also show unavailable under Bluetooth address, but it works.
Are you currently on the stock rom?
Yes is stock. Android version 5.0.1 I9505XXUHOJ2. If i toggle bluetooth on says starting bluetooth then after 5 seconds it disables. I guess the problem is from hardware not software. So fast battery drain is not normal something is using a lot of energy.
As far as I know, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules are in the same physical chip, therefore something might be physically broken. Here's a clip I came across while trying to fix my phone's Wi-Fi and I think it's exactly what might fix yours. (Should be very cheap to do too.) I think basically what he's doing is putting some flux on the board then reflowing it with the hot air gun.
Before taking that step, be sure to exhaust the possible software fixes. I'm not sure, but updating the bootloader and modem MIGHT fix it.
My wi-fi started working again it just took a while but the bluetooth does exactly the same as in the clip so maybe that's the problem. I don't understand why does so glue over it make it work...also for me it's hard to turn the phone off because the screen goes black but the blue led still stays on and the only way to turn it off completly is to take out battery. Maybe this will solve the battery problem aswell ?

N910C bootloop, no Recovery, please HELP.

Hi there, people.
I am having a weird issue with my Note4.
After tons of reading about it(here and all over the net), I don't seem to be able to fix it.
So... here's the situation -
I tend to put my phone next to me in bed, on charger, when I go to sleep. One morning I woke up and I saw it continuously restarting, only managing to get to the "Galaxy Note4" screen.
It was running 6.0.1 stock the last time it worked.
I've played with my old Galaxy S2 before and got some Cyanogenmod (and other) ROMs on it. So I decided to try to fix this one. I googled about the issue and tried a few things, but was left a little baffled, since I was unable to enter Recovery mode.
So basically I was left with the only option to reflash stock rom with ODIN. I did, but nothing really changed.
I saw on the net, that commonly this is a battery issue. I was almost sure it's that, so I went to a shop and tried booting it up with a brand new battery. Didn't work out, nothing changed. So I decided not to get a new battery, since that wouldn't really change anything.
Therefore I decided to bring it to a local phone repair shop and have it checked by someone more skilled at this.
I did, and few days after I got my phone back, in a working condition, back to 6.0.1 stock (just as it was before). The repair man said that it was pretty messed up but he managed to get it back running. Apparently, he reflashed it few times. At least that's what I understood.
Nothing has been replaced in terms of hardware.
Few HOURS after I got it back from the repair shop, I was just randomly browsing on it, and it decided to restart itself and went into bootloop again.
Recovery mode was once again, non-available.
I set it aside for few months, since I was really busy with work and had no time to spend on it, and used my old S2 in the meantime.
Recently I picked it up again to try to fix it. What I noticed is that when plugged into USB (doesn't matter if PC or wall charger) it does not show the Battery charging icon, but it's either off, or boot looping.
It apparently charges while looping, because the battery is not dying even after hours of this.
I decided it might have something to do with the charging/power PCB module, so I got a spare and replaced it myself. Unfortunately it made absolutely no difference.
Some facts, so I can cover most of the questions you might have:
-It has no microSD/SIM card inserted.
-When I got this phone it was on 5.0.1 and after few months of use I updated it to 6.0.1, using the regular procedure.
-No custom ROMs or anything unofficial has been flashed on it.
-Power button is fine, it does not power on by itself, hence it's not stuck or anything. I took the time to actually remove the power button module (with the vibrator) and power it up with the battery insertion method. No difference.
-The rest of the buttons are also fine. Vol Up/Down both work in Download Mode, Menu Button also works as expected.
-ODIN manages successfully to flash whole packages of pretty much any N910C 6.0.1 firmware I tried. (and the TRELTE_EUR_OPEN.pit, with or without NAND Erase All) That changes nothing. (hence why I suspected a power module issue, not a software one)
-I tried pretty much any version of ODIN, and this also made no difference.
-Changing to a new battery does not resolve it.
-By some chance it managed to go into Recovery ONCE (with a freshly reflashed 6.0.1 firmware) and I did wipe cache, but this changed nothing. Since that, I never got into Recovery again.
- In Download Mode it says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SM-N910C

I am running out of ideas.
I'd really love to hear your thoughts on this, since I really like this phone, and I have the feeling it might be something simple software-wise I'm missing.
I had a similar problem with Note 10.1 (N8000). It went into infinite loop. I could boot into download mode with buttons but not into recovery. So I just flashed a TWRP recovery and everything has been fine since then...

I tried that too, but it doesn't seem to work. I get the "RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING" in the upper left corner.
I am doing it according to this guide (which uses twrp-2.8.7.0-treltexx.img.tar):
rootmygalaxy.net/install-twrp-root-samsung-galaxy-note-4-android-6-0-1-marshmallow/
I also tried with the latest twrp version released... same SEANDROID error in the upper left.
Am I doing something wrong?

Phone should work with stock recovery, for sure you issue is a hardware one

I am considering this outcome.
Although, I hope someone can shed some light, why with TWRP's version for N910C 6.0.1 it still gives me the seandroid enforcing error...
I have installed many ROMS, allways with TWRP, and every time I've had "Recovery is not seandroid enforcing" without any problems.
If you get that message then you succesfully installed a custom recovery.
As somebody said before, it seems like a hardware problem.

because before flashing twrp you must enable oem unlock and usb debugging from developers option

Yeah, but how if the phone is bootlooping?
@faeterov thanks for clarifying!

I have flashed TWRP recovery many times on different phones including N910C, i don't remember doing anything about USB debugging and OEM thing. Anyway, I can recommend something like flashing a custom rom, try if It doesn't do anything then, I will be sorry to give you the idea. Thank you...
PS: About the SEANDROID error in the upper left, there is nothing wrong with that error. If your recovery is not original then that error will be there. Which is not an actual error... I have it too...
Try to flash Twrp, then try a custom ROM.
Also try to flash supersu 2.78 SR5 through twrp if it works. Sounds silly but sometimes after flashing root the phone will boot.
Good news, people.
I managed to fix it in the weirdest way possible.
Maybe some of you have heard of this method!
Since I accepted the fact that the mainboard might be the culprit and I had no other options left, I decided to go for it.
What followed might sound pretty scary and illogical to some, but oh well:
- made sure all residual electric charge is discharged (removed battery and hold buttons for a minute)
- disassembled the phone.
- removed the mainboard from the frame.
- removed all the modules that allow removal (front camera, rear camera, earpiece, etc)
- soaked the mainboard PCB in window cleaner
- rinsed it with warm water, thoroughly
- wiped off
- left it under the air-conditioner to dry out for about an hour
- cleaned it up thoroughly with rubbing alcohol
- let it evaporate
(here comes the scary part)
- fired up my kitchen oven to 200C on a ventilated mode and let it heat up
- wrapped the mainboard in aluminium (kitchen) foil with the shiny side out
- made two rolls of the foil and put them on the oven rack
- set the wrapped up mainboard on the rolls
- closed the oven door and left it in for 5 minutes exactly.
- at the end of the 5th minute I opened the oven door and shut the heating off.
- I left the oven fan running and the oven door open for about half an hour until the wrapped mainboard SLOWLY cooled down to room temperature.
- unwrapped it, put the modules back on, connected all the wires and screwed it in the phone
- BOOM it booted up, without a problem whatsoever.
- I'm a happy camper
So, to summarize and explain -
This method is called reflowing. What it does is that it slightly melts the solder connections inside the PCB, and resolves microscopic cracks and bad connections, which might have been caused by extreme heat or cold.
(which turns out to be one of the main reasons for such bootloop issues, as many people just wake up to a looping phone, after it has overheated in the warm bed)
Professional electronic engineers have actual reflowing ovens that bring the PCB inside through some very specific temperatures, way more accurately than a kitchen oven, so it produces way more reliable results.
Of course 200C is pretty hot, so any plastic parts that can be removed, SHOULD be removed, or they might melt and you really don't want that. Good example for this could be the front camera, which while probably having a glass lens, it has a plastic housing which will probably go soft and render the camera useless, if not break it completely.
Reflowing should not be done to components you suspect might have just a software problem.
It is pretty much a russian roulette if you're gonna get anything out of the oven, that is not baked and dead.
I might have been lucky, and I probably am.
Therefore I want to say this out and loud:
============
THIS IS NOT A SOLUTION OR A REPAIR GUIDE BY ANY MEANS. I DO NOT SUGGEST IT TO ANYONE, I AM JUST SHARING MY PROCEDURE.
THERE'S NO GUARANTEE THAT YOU'RE NOT JUST KILLING IT COMPLETELY BY ATTEMPTING A REFLOW.
YOU SHOULD ATTEMPT THIS ONLY IF THERE'S NOTHING ELSE TO BE DONE AND YOU'RE PLANNING TO THROW IT AWAY.
============
So... now for the reflowing enthusiasts:
-aluminium foil wrap is there to spread the heat evenly and protect the components from direct heating
-aluminium foil rolls are there to keep it off the metal rack so it doesn't get a massive heat transfer from its contact with the rack.
-water/alcohol/windowcleaner rinsing is fine for electronics as long as they're not powered. (water leftovers can cause oxidation of metallic components, so make sure it dries out well)
-make sure the board is completely, completely, completely dry, before plugging it back in. Water drops could settle in the metallic hollow chip guards/heatsinks (i suppose that's what they are)
-do not just remove it from the hot oven, as you may just reintroduce new micro cracks by subjecting it to a sudden temperature change. Let it cool off on its own first.
-be careful as some components on some PCBs can emit some pretty poisonous fumes. Ventilate the area and give your oven a good run after that, to make sure it's all gone, before you decide to cook in it again.
- and MOST IMPORTANTLY - if you have any suspicion it might be a software issue, do not bother with this destructive method. You might break it even further or even kill it off, completely.
DISCLAIMER - I take no responsibility if you decide to go the reflowing road.
Any questions are welcome!
Anyone manage to resolve this problem ? I mean beside that weird solution
Agreed - reflow is little bit risky but it comes handy with micro cracks. This method also helps to improve performance after mmc memory fail.
In Androidbench app I still got around 30MB/s when it should be above 100. I've heated my motherboard on 140 deg for 5minutes and will try with 180 right now. Fingers crossed and do not try this if you're not ready to your phone be another brick in the wall
Edit: tried reflow again on 200deg for 5minutes and amazing results! Memory speed increased from 30MB/s to 190MB/s! If you're thinking about buying new motherboard you should try with this method - at worst scenario you will buy a new motherboard.
Mind to wrap in aluminium sheet and leave it to cool down in cooker for 10-15 minutes just like author said
