When I put my phone to my ear the display turns off.
When I move it away it turns on. That is GREAT.
Now, how can I enable this activity when I open and close the cover of my phone case?
My old S4 did this but I cannot find a setting.
Thanks!
Look for kinscreen on the app store.

When on a call, the proximity sensor is active and controls the screen. Having it on 24/7 will impact battery.
Generally, a magnet is used to trigger the same thing with a case. A different sensor or switch than the proximity sensor is used and a magnet in the case triggers it. It's possible that the Essential doesn't have this sensor that gets triggered by a magnet or your case doesn't have a magnet.
The cover has a magnet. Using the app mentioned above solved the problem. Will be interesting to see impact on the battery life.

The phone may not have the sensor for the magnet to work then. Good luck with the app. It may not be too bad as it may only enable the sensor while the screen is on.

Proximity sensor. Reducing screen on time offsets the energy cost of polling the sensor.

So I found out the hard way that the Tab 2 10.1 doesn't come with a proximity sensor (not sure how I missed this). Has anyone found an app that turns the screen on/off by opening and closing a case?
My assumption is that this isn't possible without a proximity sensor but thought I'd ask.

Shouldn't be impossible at all.. the device auto senses what the screen light should be I do not know if it uses the camera for this or if there is a second sensor to accomplish this.. but it sounds totally feasible to write a program that senses total darkness to tell the device to sleep Im not so sure how turning it back on would work..this would be am awesome app please post back if you find one

Here there, sorry I don't think it is possible, even smart cover app relys on proximity sensor.
And no, light sensor wouldn't work in dark places or at night.
I believe proximity sensor is only present in cellular models. If so, on your dialpad/keypad, type *#0*# -> sensor -> and place an object near the top of the tablet where the speaker and light/prox sensors are located.
Screen should turn green, and PROXIMITY:0.0 -> PROXIMITY:1.0
Im not much on coding but you would see some light at night from the screen unless the sensor just sucks or the case lets too much light escape i dont see why it wouldnt.

The sensors are only effective if light in shinning directly above it. If light sensors were this sensitive (picking up light from screen), I adobt putting a smart cover on or putting it in your pocket isn't going to work since neither pockets or smart covers are completely light proof as sensors are near the top picking up reddish/faint light.
Cover isn't flat enough to stop screen backlight from traveling accorss the surface of tab and therefore sensors won't be triggered.
Common sense
do you try the Power Switch Pro?
Power Switch Pro works with my Tab 2 7.0 and I would think it would work with the 10.1. There is a lite version on Play that you can try. I liked it well enough to buy it.

I'm using the wireless version. It works on my Samsung and also on the wife's rooted Nook tablet. It actually works the best when using the motion sensor and laying it upside down when you want it to turn off. A couple of times it didn't respond as quickly when lying on the back, but it works 100% of the time when laid upside down.

There is also a app at google play called Killswitch Lite.
power switch pro seems to do the job to a certain point. it works good outside, but when you are inside a room or place with a litle less light it starts to pop up that notification window and shut down the screen. maybe be it can be adjusted with the light sensor sensitivity but i found that so disturbing that i disable it.
for me it doesnt do the desired job. if someone has some idea how to make this useful will be thankful.

I use Case Sensor on my Tab 10.1" and it does it's job. It does use the light sensor so during night time or dark areas, it won't activate thinking the case is still covering the light sensor. This app is clever in that when you press the power button, it will override the app for a temporary amount of time. Good enough until someone else can think of a better way to execute or use a combination on different sensors to control the screen
I am using my GS4 running armband with my G2, it fits well actually but there is one MAJOR issue. The phone will NOT wakeup when double tapping the screen. It will however turn off when double tapping the status bar. Has anyone else gone running with their G2? If so how has it worked out and what armband are you using?
Be sure the proximity sensor isnt covered, if this is covered it doesnt listen, probably to prevent from turning on in your pocket.

The ar band I am using doesnt cover it, I wonder if maybe its too thick and is possibly messing with the sensor?
KnockOn is also affected by the orientation of the phone. If it doesn't detect that it is in an appropriate orientation for typical phone use it will ignore the KnockOn feature.

I have tested that, it turns on at all angles and even upside down. I don't think that is very accurate, even if LG advertises that. I am guessing my arm band is too thick.

Just got my international version yesterday and was really bummed to discover the same issue this morning.
It definitely has sonething to do with the proximity/light sensor next to the LED getting thrown off my the plastic of the armband view area.
I experimented by pressing the plastic flat against the phone and it then worked. Obviously not practical to try and do while running, but its a start. I imagine that, while not ideal, cutting a section from the armband window may help
Will post if I find something else
Does anyone experience the Air Wake Up function not always working? I made sure the sensors are clean and no screen protector on them.
Sometimes I have to wave or cover the phone several times to turn on the screen. I did this slowly but still. I think I also had this issue with my Note 2. Do you think it's the software or hardware issue?
Thank you,
HL
I don't use air wake now but I did for awhile and it's always worked for me. I have a screen protector in but it's a Zagg with cutouts. I would guess hardware... But don't quote me on that

I have the screen auto off function set to 30 seconds but it will randomly turn off within seconds of my last touch. If I just set the tablet down and don't touch it, the screen will stay on for 30 seconds before turning off. What could be causing this? BTW, the screen turned off about three seconds after typing that last sentence. I have the US WiFi only version.
Interesting, I have that version and haven't had that problem yet. Do you have a case that it's in? I believe it has some sort of magnetic switch or something because when I close the case it will sleep. So what I'm getting at is if there is something tripping that. Also, try setting the display off to something real long (60 secs or something) reboot and try that then reset to 30. Just a couple shots in the dark but maybe we can eliminate a few things.

Good point, I do have it in a smart case that has the sleep/wake function. I'll try folding the back cover so the magnet is in a different position.
Yep, it is the smart case. I can cause it to turn off and back on just by moving the front cover when it's folded flat behind the tablet and doesn't happen when I don't have the cover flat behind the tablet.
Great news, glad I was able to help.

I got an awesome case a day after I picked up this tablet and I am glad I found this thread. Same problem, how annoying! Guess I will be looking for an alternative.
I have the Huawei (gastly) brown case and have not had this issue. However, I also have another no name brand from Amazon and did suffer the problem with that one.
Yes, exactly the same problem with a case I have . It only happens in portrait mode. How do I disable this magnetic nonsense? Thanks
Hi
i got 2 brand new S8 G950FD and i got the same problem with both
tge magnetic sensors "compass" keeps losing calibration.
this becomes very annoying when using Google maps onfoot everything is upside down .
recalibrating the sensor is always successful but for some reason it doesn't stick for long even when using high accuracy location settings
I'm not sure if the problem is with Google maps compatibility with the S8 or with the sensor itself
anyone having the same issue ?
does the calibration rest automatically when going to the sensor app (*#0*#) ?(even though I'm going to the sensor app becomes the map is upside down )
thanks in advance

My FD doesn't play nice with one of my cases, as it has some metal in the back of the case. Compass won't even calibrate when the case is on. Makes sense though.

make since but i don't have any metal in the case, and it does calibrate
I've got exactly the same problem. I never thought that a protective case could be the problem, however, I'm using the Samsung original clear case and it does recalibrate...but it's very annoying because you can't rely on your compass, it will abandon you without warning.
Has anybody found a fix to that? Is it hardware related?
