Which Case Would You Recommend? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I have the S8 in black since May and I got a gear4 case with it. It says it's d30 piccadilly. Basically the case is doing fine to protect the phone from shock when it falls but the clear parts of the case around the edges are gone yellow. I don't want to pay loads for a new one when it's going to turn yellow again in a couple of months. Has anyone else got any suggestions of any decent cases? I don't mine the case not being black just once it goes with the black phone. Just one that hasn't got clear silicone that will turn black is all like I don't mind it not being clear.

I recommend the otterbox screenless edition
It provides plenty of protection

Thanks for the suggestions. The otterbox has 2 editions I can find. One is defender and one symmetry. I'd like to get it in blue which symmetry is available in but defender is black. Is there much difference between both?

Discoloration on the back panel

After a week of using a cheapo leather case I pulled my SGT out and found that the back panel (white) edges have dark splotches on them, almost like its been placed over a flame. Tried rubbing it off with all sorts of stuff but it just wont come off. My wife has had an iPhone for 2 years and the white panel on the back still looks new. Quality of the material perhaps? anyone else have this and able to clean it?

More like the cheap leather case of yours tainted the black color onto the back of your tab. I had this kind of case before, but luckily I have a layer of screen protector at the back, even that layer is tainted..It's not the tab, just the cheap casing.
no discoloration here, my tab is naked all the time tho
As a rule, as soon as I get my devices I get them laminated (a good one at that) both front and back. Thr surface on the front is resistant to oily hand marks and the back one well lets just say keeps it shining for a good 6-8 months before I get a new one done. This way selling it is never a problem. Cheers!

I had that problem with my Galaxy Tab and the Samsung leather case that came with it. It seems that the soft fabric they line the inside with rubs off onto the Tab. It's not actually that big of a deal to get off. I took some rubbing alcohol (70% Isopropyl Alcohol), poured it on a cotton ball and used a small amount of pressure. It came right off and my Tab looked brand new.
I am in India, waiting for the free leather case from Samsung. One concern is about the heat,if the back is encased, can the device heat up? Will it affect it adversely ?

I have not experienced any problems with the device heating up while in the case. To be perfectly honest, the only time I have even felt the device get slightly warm is when I'm charging it via the wall charger. Even then, it doesn't get that warm. If you're worried though, you can always charge the device outside of the case. While you're using it though, you won't have to worry about it overheating in the case.
Put on an invisishield before you put it in the case. There are a few companies that sell then online for a cheap price.
I still can't get it off, anyway I ditched the case and made one myself instead. You can find it in the SGT accessories forum

I had/have the same problem from a black cowhide case I got from acceport.com - unsightly black blotches on the white back. I had a go at the firm that sold me the case but, naturally, have had no reply. The back almost looks new now after plenty of polishing with an almost daily cleaning and polishing with an all-purpose cleaner I have seen many of the phone shops here in Thailand use to clean telephone screens, etc. Still it will never look like new - it will always have some visible signs of the staining.

Not that my reply is helpful to your situation but it's interesting that each US carrier chose their own different design for the back. AT&T definitely chose wisely with their matte carbon fiber styling. I was in a T-Mobile store this weekend looking at their Tab and that glossy black style is a terrible finger print magnet and now I am reading that the white can discolor. Way to go AT&T, your customer service sucks but someone made a good decision at a terrible company.
same problem here.. black cheap leather... dirty white back, I'll try with alcohol, anyways I buy a new "clip-on" leather that seems look better and it has stand

Does the defy even require a case?

This phone is said to be "Life Proof", I'm about to get one and I'm not sure if I should pick up a case as well. My last phone is still in mint condition basically and that had no case so I would imagine that the Defy would be fine with out one.
Even a screen protector is that necessary? Also if anyone has any good privacy screen for the Defy link me please
Oh and Hi forums !
I would think so.
Sure, functionally it should withstand some bumps and knocks, but if you want to keep your phone in good aesthetic condition then you'll want a case. And yes, I'd recommend a screen protector. Quite a few people have unsuspectedly scratched their screens with random other things in their pocket.
Hope that helps
My Defy fell 3 times I think and not a single damage.
The defy(ivory one) don't really need a case because it has no glossy part on it compared to the black one.
Thus the ivory one has no reason to get scratched.
(the contour of the defy is made with the same material as the back cover)
A case is an option, but recomended.
I'm personally using one..
I don't use any case or screen protector and just put it in my shirt or pant pocket with nothing else. After using more than 3 months, there is no scratch but barely noticeable wear in the back cover lock button.
Hi
I don't use a case ether, but if you drop your phone the glass can break,
it is seldom, but it can happen. So its up to you if you want to stand the risk or not
greetings
I use a case and a screen protector for my Defy.
This is i did with all my PDA's from the last years and i have never reget.
When i sell them they where in so good as new condition.
I buy them from Ebay for little money. Only the screen protectors are not from a good quality from Ebay.
I normally buy a complet body cover from Zagg Invisible shield. I think its the best.
I shall soon buy only a screen protector from Zagg. I dont think you its necessary to buy a complete body cover for the Defy.
mine is a gel case simply because it is slippery as hell naked, my ZTE blade definitely felt more secure in the hand.
The gel cased isnt "sticky" like a silicone one so it slips in and out of my pockets ok but it just adds that tiny bit more grip to make the phone feel more secure.
The defy is a case for itself So why use a case? You won't use a umbrella to avoid your other umbrella to get wet!
escrivel - Very interesting logic - thanks!
But others, can someone kindly post an image of their case (WllstpM?) - thanks in advance.
This is the one i use (but in blue) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128453&pf_rd_i=468294
It is a very snug fit and doesn't bulk the phone up by very much at all

I'm pretty sure I'm using the same one as well. The phone felt much more secure in my hands once I got it
The pattern on the back of mine isn't nearly as visible as that though. I can only really see it if I'm looking from the "inside" of the case (i.e. when the phone is out of it)
The only reason I have a (silicon) case is because the defy lacks an elevated edge around the screen (like some HTC-models have). Such an edge protects the screen from a direct hit falling on a hard surface with its screen (which is the weakest point in the defy imho). I don't see the need for a screenprotector, because the gorilla glass should be strong enough if you don't abuse your defy
I'm using an 'OtterBox - Commuter Case' with my Defy:

Perfect protection and nice look...

Wierd with two tone color of your Defy. But unique as well as this is the first time I see Defy of this white band color.
My Defy is all black and it just as naked as it is. It doesn't need any casing or screen protector. It just simply awesomely sexy this way...!
I neither use a screen protector nor a case. It simply spoils the look. And does not worth also IMHO. the one thing you can do is don't let it fall and don't put the defy on any surface with the display facing down. Like this, your defy will look cool always except the wear marks on the battery lock!
and btw this wear mark is not that much visible unless someone gives a closer look!
May be putting on a case and screen guard will be good for long run, but hey how many years you are gonna keep this thing with you? mobiles are not meant for 10 years use! For 1 or 2 years use, case is not needed.
I have used lots of touch mobiles and normal ones, none of them had any cases, neither they had any Considerable wear marks(except the itouch, that thing need a cover as the back side is of metal)
So my point is, just give some care while using it, instead of casing!
im using none of case.. its dust proof Defy

Clear glossy TPU case?

I am looking for a clear TPU case, something akin to cruzerlite, only no textures, drawings, or anything on it. I really don't like the way matte feels in my hand, so I'd like it to be glossy. I had a cruzerlite for my galaxy nexus, but the back of the Nexus 4 is so pretty that I want a clear one Unfortunately either cruzerlite doesn't offer one, or it's not listed on amazon.
Even if they did, I don't think the clear ones have a fully transparent backing (rather it is frosted.)
I want this too! But so far the best I've found is a two piece hard case.

Well, other than "In stock on February 20, 2013" absolutely nothing, I'm definitely gonna grab me one!
I've been looking for a tpu transparent case too, I've seen clear ones are with the s on the back,
the link above looks like the one to get, images doesn't help alot as they look photoshoped
you would of thought they make a clear one to begin with so you can show off the back while protecting the side
Hmm...the description is a tad bit vague. It indicates that it "snaps" on, but the soft cases don't "snap" so to speak. Just wondering if it has that gel feel to it, I don't like matte cases.

The black is TPU
http://www.droid-life.com/2013/02/1...-case-clear-back-shows-your-sparkly-goodness/
The Ringke Fusion is a mix of TPU and PC – TPU is the black part for bumper-style protection, PC is the clear back. The TPU portion has what feels like a soft, almost matte finish and does not give off the rubbery feel like other TPU cases.

Hmm...I don't really like matte finish. Or at least, I like how the glass on the phone itself feels, or something equally smooth.
keep in mind, all transparent cases. be it silicon or tpu, colourize and end up in an awful dirty brown/yellow look within a few weeks. Thats a reason for me never to get a transparent case again, despite the cool looks.
Hmm...good point.
Just noticed this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AJNM57O/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Since I liked the cruzerlite case for my gnex, I just ordered one. Seems clear enough, I guess. Saw one complaint of yellowing on clear ones for other phones, seems not all of them do this though.
For $13, I'm not going to complain much if it turns yellow after 6 months.
keep in mind because of the glass back of the phone that the tpu will touch and will create a "wet spot" look. I'll try to find a video of that issue later when I'm at a desktop computer
I wanted one too at first until I saw those marks. I think hard clear plastics are the best alternative

"Triple Armor Hybrid Case" Opinions? (Ballistic SG Knock Off?)

So I was surfing on ebay for a rugged case for my n4
I ran by this...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Triple-Armo...t=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item5d43674502
It seems like a ballistic sg knock off but at a lower price
comes with screen protectors too if that matters for anyone...
Does ANYONE have any experience with this case? If so, please let us know!
Otherwise I'm going to order a Ballistic SG this week.....

I would order that ebay one instead of the SG.
I had the SG and it wasn't worth the money. The problem with it is that the silicone isn't a perfect fit so the nexus 4 slides up and down a bit. The plastic piece that goes over the inner silicone cover occasionally comes undone a bit (it's hard to describe exactly) which leads to more sliding of the nexus. The plastic piece doesn't stay on as well as I'd hoped because the silicon is too soft to let it really clamp on well.
That ebay one is much cheaper and appears to be basically the same.
The case I have now and would really recommend is the mybatt. In addition to a back plastic clamp on piece, it also has a front screen side snap on piece so its inner silicon layer is sandwiched securely. I haven't had any sliding issues like I did with the Ballistic. Here's a review someone did on the mybatt: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2120148
It does come in a couple different colors. I have the all black one because I thought the white might get stained with dirt.

I personally didn't have that problem. It seems to have mainly been on the first few versions of it that came out. People didn't mention that issue as much after it had been out for awhile. I just got mine about a month and it's been fine.

Case, Bumper or Naked?

I'm still waiting on my "being Built" Moto Maker X Pure. Bamboo and black.
This phone having such customization potential, I'm curious what the majority of you are doing about cases. I've always used a case, but I want to show of my wood back and color choices.. and personally, I'm kind of hoping that it's tough enough to risk using naked daily.
What do you think?
Oh, and I'm likely to keep this for a long time and reselling is not something I'm worried about.
I would go with a clear case, still shows the wood and protects the phone.
I'm either going to get a transparent/translucent case or a good quality bumper. I ended up going for the soft back rather than the leather so I'm more likely to get the case.
Personally, wouldn't keep the phone naked. At the very least, use the provided bumper for some sort of protection.

Right now I'm just using the included bumper and a clear skin on the back. It works, but I'll probably move to a clear case once more become available. The clear skin looks fairly good, but it does make the bamboo look a little too shiny.

Xtremeguard... They're having like a 90% off sale. Its OK. Doesn't cover from edge to edge...which is fine, otherwise the bumper would probably peel it off. It will protect it from scratches for now though. Adds a little grip, but not as much as I had hoped.

Cool. Thanks for the info and the quick reply.
Awesome, thank you all for the replies. I keep feeling like I won't enjoy the phone unless it's naked, but I know you're right about protection. Ya, if I remember correctly it was a little difficult on the N6 but not terrible. I'd think it'd be OK on this phone.
I bought this one
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012Y81GXA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
It sais to preorder but i ordered it and it came in the mail already, dont know if they only made a few or something, you could always email the seller and ask.
Im extremely impressed with it. I bought it as a cheap case to put on till i have more options. My only criticism was that it was a little loose on the sides, so what did i do ? I boiled it! thats right, i looked it up online and people boil tpu cases to shrink them a little. I boiled it in water for 3 minutes. it fits alot more snug now, still not perfect but close enough
I went with an otterbox so my kids dont break my phone
FYI - I've had the included "bumper" on my MXPE almost continuously since I received it.
I removed the bumper yesterday and, to my dismay, found nicks/pits in the longer metal edges of the phone. It looks like the anodized coating has worn away to show the brighter metal beneath (I have the dark grey/titanium metal color). I also noticed upon receipt that there was a slight chip in the finish at the edge of the SIM card door.
Fortunately my MotoMaker re-do unit is on its way to me (decided to go with wood instead of soft-touch), but I'm somewhat disappointed with the robustness of the metal finish. I almost wonder if this is why the "bumper" was packaged with the phone - though it looks like it might've done more harm than good by trapping scratchy debris.
Bottom line - I usually carry my phone naked except with a glass screen protector, but I'm wondering if this MXPE is going to need at least an edge bumper.
(I haven't fully scoured the forums to see if this is a known problem, but I certainly hope the finish on my re-do unit is more durable.)
I'm going naked, I have moto care so I think I will go naked with this phone. So often cases seem to cause more wear than without so I will keep it "pure"

Im trying that too, but I am only a month in and I already am seeing spots on the back where it seems that the varnishing is being removed? Have you noticed this yourself?
See-through case, fits like a glove - not loose. The best combination for me personally, the phone is still 100% visible but protected to some degree. Also I find soft silicone cases add more grip to what would otherwise be a slippery phone.
I-blason clear case from Amazon. Very happy with it.
Sent from my SM-T530NU using Tapatalk
I'm currently using the i-blason clear case as well, and I'll second it as good option. I had decent drop onto a hard surface over the weekend, and the phone was no worse for the wear. I also have the Casemate naked tough case coming as well, which should be even better. I'm someone that likes to have a variety of cases (although with this phone I'm probably going to stick with clear ones), so I will probably end up getting a bumper or two as well. I don't think the included bumper is quite as bad as a lot of people said it was, but it fits kind of loose and I can see it breaking with a good drop. As much as I enjoy going naked with the phone, I didn't get Moto care, and the wooden back I got is fairly slippery, and I don't trust myself not drop it occasionally.
I have noticed that the clear bumper that came with the phone has started to scratch the very edges of the rounded glass. I'm going naked now. I don't use screen protectors and generally don't use cases or bumpers. I've never had a problem with scratching my devices. I also never resell my phones (I usually gift them to family members, friends, etc.), so slight scratches aren't a deal breaker for me.
I love this phone in its bare form :good:
