Hi XDA,
After being a long time reader, it's time to ask you guys for some advice. My S7E still works great after 1.5 year of quite intensive usage. So far so good.
However, over the past couple of days, I've started to notice that my phone wasn't charged at all after putting it on the charger for 1-2 hours. The first 2 times I just thought that the cable just wasn't in properly, because after I reconnected the cable, it did charge. A few days later it just stopped charging at all. After testing it on a wireless charger of a coworker quickly, I knew the battery itself was fine. I tried a couple of cables, both new and old, but it wouldn't charge. Because I also used new cables, the cable wasn't the problem either.
So then, as a last resort, I tried to push the actual connection part (having the pins on it) within the port on the phone a bit inward. This so the pins in the port would better connect to the pins. And Boom! It started charging. So then I knew where my problem was. But now every time when it stops charging again, I have to do this over and over. This puts stress on the connector, and after repeating this process enough times, it will eventually break.
So here's my problem.. Because of how contracts are setup here, I can't open my phone up myself to simply replace the USB port (namely materials, but also certain skills). Also the repair service that is suppose to do the replacement, basically just sucks. They gave me a phone with a bend LCD back last time. I've fixed it myself afterwards back then. I don't want to send it there, except for screen repair.
So I'm looking for a way to either fix this connector permanently without opening my phone, or a specific type of cable focussed on bad connectors, or whatever might help me in this sitation.

Wireless charging is ok. Its not as fast as usb but it gets the job done

Thanks, but that's only part of the problem. Let's say I need to connect my phone somewhere on the fly for whatever reason. Or are maybe on an airplane or something like that. I'll always need to bring toothpicks to fix the port, up until it breaks.
Mine s7 edge just stopped fast charging one day and PC doesn't recognize the phone anymore. It's still charging slow though.

just use airdroid. can trasnfer files wirelessly.
Well, let me clarify a bit... I know there are workarounds for the issue I'm describing. I could setup SMB and transfer files through that. The heck - I could write my own app, using my own "protocol". Charging can be fixed through wireless charging, thetering can be fixed using the hotspot, adb can also be done wirelessly, and terminal access I could get through an app. I could continue for a while here.
I actually want to fix this specific problem under the given circumstances. Not just dozens of workarounds for specific tasks. Let's say I **** up flashing, and need Odin to restore my device.
there isn't a way to "fix" this without removing a LOT of small, fiddly bits inside the phone. You certainly could get a micro-usb extension cable an leave it plugged into the phone all the time, or MAYBE use a Mophie Juice pack (a battery pack in a case that has a micro usb that plugs into phone and a new port that is on the edge of the case...

No sorry you can't, its nearly impossible to replace usb port without opening front panel and screen, and there is not a single percent chance to prevent screen from damage when opening front panel and glass, its simply doesn't designed to be opened. Go to samsung care center and give them the fee to replace usb port, if your screen got damaged during repair, they will replace it themselves.

Kinda was afraid of that, thanks for confirming. I like the idea of the case, hadn't thought of that. But the idea of the extension cable got me thinking. I think I'm gonna order some of those magnetic USB cables. They have a small adapter that barely sticks out. Then I simply need a few cables, for work, home and on the road. Because the adapter has no reason on move, it should be alright.

Hi, my port broke. I managed to resolder it but now when I plug the phone to my pc, windows displays the usb not recognized alert... How can I fix it.
It sounds like you did not resolder it correctly.
Check with a magnifying glass to make sure you didn't accidentally bridge the connections with solder.
its quite hard to sold it right i have done it once it tookt me all day to get it right i tested it with the charger it it charges it should be ok at least my one was/is the first day the active sync didn´t connect at all but 2 days later i plugd it in and it connected so be carefull with the solder if u dmg the board you may say goodbye to your phone take time to do it right

i think i have that problem... i soldered the usb port for a 8125(wizard100) and it charges fine as i can see the light. it charged for a couple of hours then the orange light turned green. so that's good. but i can't seem to get any response. i tested the battery in another phone to see if it actually charged (i was kicking myself before thinking i messed it up). so i dont think the board is dmged.... however does anyone know which pin corresponds with power, etc. so i can test for a response?

Ok, so i tested the unit without the battery and it comes on. However i can't seen to get it to work with the battery in it. Oh yeah one more thing the unit keeps cutting off.
Hi, there are lots of posts about damaged USB ports. I was wondering does anyone saw or uses any cap for USB. It should be something like rubber SD cap. Just plug it into USB and you can reset the phone in complete darkness . And it could be attached to leash loop with little thread not to lose it while on charge/sync. That would also prevent dust from accumulating inside USB port. Anyway I couldn't find anything like that. Maybe some DIY ...

This would be a great idea since I have to realign my usb port every once in a while. The only way I can sync with my computer is by using the HTC USB Headphones adapter that came with my 8525. AT$T said that they would not exchange my Tilt for a new one because bent pins are not covered under their warranty due to "personal damange". It's really weird that I can't use my Seidio Cradle to sync with my computer anymore since it has the same proprietary USB jack. It will only charge the unit and if I move the Tilt while plugged in to the cradle, the connection is not always consistant.

Haha. I thought I was the only one. Went to do a soft reset, wasn't looking, and stabbed the USB by mistake. Didn't notice it wouldn't charge until the next day. Fortunately, I was able to bend the pin (GENTLY) back into place and it works again. BIG sigh of relief
The full sized USB port on my Iconia Tab has an issue. I plugged in a device for the first time yesterday, plugging it in was hard, but not to bad. Unplugging the device from the tablet proved to be impossible without the use of tools. I finally managed to get the cable unplugged, but it still is rather hard to use the USB port. It also makes a bit of a clicking sound when removing a USB device/cable.
Anyone else have the issue?
If its a fresh device it may just be this way for a bit. But to be on the safe side just return it you could damage it and thy may not replace it then.

Yes, the USB port was super tight on my A500 the first time I used it. I thought I was going to break something when I pulled out the USB drive that first time. Same thing the next time I plugged in the USB drive, but easier than the first time. Plugged it in and out a few more times and now it goes in smooth.
My USB ports were really tight at first as well after some use the metal clips loosen a bit and they function normally, they speced them tight due to it being a mobile device they are planning it the things being plugged in getting bumped and pulled
While we're on the subject of USB port and pulling out peripheral devices ...etc
I own the Asus Transformer briefly ( returned due to screen bled ) and it has the option to "unmount" ( MicroSD through tablet & full USB through dock )
for us Iconia owners... without the option and by just yanking things out.... doesn't that increased the chances of damaging the usb drives and corrupting files ??

Broken USB port
i noticed mine was like this at first but after a while it got easier to put in. until one day, my flash drive refused to go in all the way. I looked inside using a flash light and one of the gold pins had been bent back all the way. I live outside of the US so no warranty. I panicked and tried to straighten it back with a safety pin. It broke and fell out. I am now left without a usb port at all. any ideas on what to do?
I returned my first Tab because I thought the snug USB port was a defect, but the second Tab was just as bad. Over time the port has loosened a bit but I still have problems after all these months. Recently I inserted a mini wireless mouse USB dongle and I could not, for the life of me, remove it. I finally had to yank it out in pieces with a pair of pliers *shudder*. I still use a wired USB mouse and keyboard from time to time - but they have been tested several times and will unplug with minimal effort. I am very careful with flash drives though. I have one or two that work fine and they are the only ones I trust to use.

I have had two Iconias and both have had this issue. I don't think the newer one will help out with it. I use a 32gb USB device and it always hangs up in the port. But I don't use USB that often so my opinion is bias.
Yeah my USB port is super tight as well. The first time I stuck in a flash drive, I ended up pulling off the cover to the drive tying to get it out. After using it for a bit, it did loosen up some, but its still really tight. I just always use an extension cable now, at least that way I have something to grab onto to yank.
seems like a common issue. I also noticed the port was fairly tight at first, but after plugging in and out a few times, it seems to be broken in now - snug, but not overly tight. I use it for an external hard drive which is constantly being added and removed when moving from point a to point b.
My nexus 7 recently started to behave weirdly, it doesnt charge while turned on, neither with USB or AC. It does charge perfectly well when turned off.
I am unable to use the USB either no device is detected, nor in normal mode, USB debugging, fastboot or adb.
Please help me to get this USB brick fixed on my Nexus 7 asap.

I've had this problem for a few weeks now and have yet to find a solution.
I'm quite astonished I haven't found a fix for this either. I have yet to open mine up ... I'm try to get the bootloader relocked, so I can warranty the dumb thing. But since it's not recognized by USB when powered on, I can't.
Have you tried putting pressure on the cable when it's plugged in? Also are you using the factory cable?

Yep ... Tried pushing. Pulling. Etc. Factory cable. Non factory. Doesn't seem to matter. Anything I use charges fine off. Once on ... No juice

Unfortunately it is a hardware failure. Most likely the USB port assembly. It is possible there is a loose ribbon cable connection.
Nexus 7 not charging
I have the same problem. My Nexus 7 will not charge when turned on. It will not now connect to my pc. I have checked the drivers and all are ok.
It happened a few days ago Its rooted. I can restore backups that are on my Nexus through rom manager, but still the same problem. I thought of doing a factory reset, but if it will still not connect to my pc. I will loose the data. If it is a hardware usb port failure, what is the next stop
I know this is going to sound strange but open up the back of the Nexus and you will find your battery... And you will notice that it's loose you have to plug or wedge it back on to the battery clip it comes loose overtime use a credit card or similar to open the case :thumbup: success

Thanks for reply, already checked battery and connections. It charges perfect when not switched on, that's what I find strange. It also charges when connected to my pc

Similar thing happened to me... No amount of pressure or angling of the charging port would work. Batteries ran dead as a result. Sent it to the service center and they would assess it for 2-3 days and try to repair since it is under warranty. I'm gonna get an official dock to try and save the charging port from the stress of always being in use although I know that's not the only factor at play.

That's sounds a good idea with the official dock for charging, but you should not have to do that.
To much usage of the micro usb port is going to give problems. I'm always connected to my pc, downloading roms ect. but as I said before, my N7 charges perfectly when not turned on.

I think the only answer is a faulty USB connection.
I tried to change mine and finished up snapping the connectors. :crying:
Now have one useless N7
Long story short: plugged the n7 into the car's OEM stereo USB port on a long trip and it registered as a device with the stereo and let me play some music off of it, when I woke up a couple hours later it wouldn't charge.
After a short bit of troubleshooting, I found that OTG devices were still working but it would only charge if I shut it right down - if I start it charging while it's turned off and leave the charger attached while powering it up it's not detected by the software so it never says it's charging, but does still charge - though if at any point I pull the charger from either the n7 or it's supply I have to shut it right down again to get it to charge. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of a PC USB device connection (aside from the charging part of course.)
After a couple weeks using it like this, I got my hands on a multimeter (my stuff is all packed in storage indefinitely or I'd have been replying to this topic sooner) and confirmed that I never register anything beyond a few millivolts on the detect/sense pin (which I find very odd as it's supposed to have a pull-up) with nothing attached to the usb port, and that aside from a short time in fasboot that unless the n7 is powered right off it's trying to supply 5V to the USB connector. I attempted to use the faux123 kernel that has options to disable this power to allow host+charging (and my hope was to slow the battery rundown to make it more usable even if I have to shut it off to charge it), but the n7 appears to ignore this and still powers the USB connector.
In this case it most definitely is NOT the IO/USB/headphone assembly inside the unit. At the moment I'm operating on the theory that Asus skimped on protection circuitry in the charge circuit as in my mind this type of damage should never occur when it's properly designed, and I'm presuming the motherboard dead with regards to being a USB device - too bad my warranty is likely up, though I can't check that as it was a gift and all the paperwork is buried in storage. Thankfully it's still capable of fast charging when off, though this doesn't leave me very happy as this also effectively takes away most recovery options if fastboot is the only thing left working.
If I manage to source a replacement mobo I will work on doing a post-mortem and seeing if it's down to a faulty component (I've seen this sort of behaviour before, a pulled up line not getting pulled up, when a filtering capacitor decides to go flakey.) More likely though I'll either sell it, give it away or put it on the junk pile with the rest of the Asus products I've had to retire in the last month due to their questionable customer support (the other products were due to Asus deciding they were "legacy products" and not updating drivers for windows 8/8.1 despite only being 5 years old.)

I am sure you are right, but I'm not qualified to agree or disagree.
I have had quite a few Asus products in the past and never had any problems.
My Nexus 7 (2012) was also charging properly. I only have the issue that it only charge when turned off AFTER I charged it:
(1) using car charger; and
(2) charge it using official charger but inside a train using train's power plug
So it seems that these devices really need a normal wall-charging paired with official charger.. otherwise, something bad might happen..

Randomly my note 3 has started having issues charging. I'm not quite sure why. It gives an error about needing the factory charger, however I'm using the factory charger and usb 3.0 cable. Sometime a reboot fixes it, but not always. I've tried using different charges, and even a regular usb 2.0 cable and it still does the same thing. Is the port maybe going bad? If so, has any one replaced theirs? Any help is appreciated. I have wireless charging, but there are definitely times I need the quick charging of the oem charger.

That is the problem with intermittent behavior. It is difficult to say that "after" is caused by "before" because you don't know when the intermittent behavior will show up and when it will not. Any experiment in the presence of an intermittent behavior runs the risk of coming to a conclusion that is an "ex post facto fallacy".
I suppose your hypotheses of a damaged or loose USB connector is the most probable, given everything else you mentioned, although since you don't have a second Samsung/OEM charger, a problem with that specific charger can't be ruled completely out.
Note that the USB 3.0 Micro-B connector "extra" pins (the part of the connector which is not used by a USB 2.0 micro connector) doesn't have power/ground in it (there is a shield ground, but this isn't the same thing as the power supply ground)... so your tests with a USB 2.0 cable don't resolve anything about the connector, but do indicate that the problem is probably not your Samsung OEM USB 3.0 cable.
Those mini-usb connectors are pretty horrid mechanically for devices that need to be plugged in several times daily; I guess the phone industry assumes that consumers will toss their devices after two years, so the power connector only needs to survive about 1000 - 2000 plug-in/removal events.
The only conclusive way to eliminate the possibility that you simply have a failing USB connector would be to use a spare battery charger - and that means buying both a charger and a spare battery if you want your phone on almost 24/7.

My 2 cents...i had this problem while using custom rom..however, taking the battery out for about 30 sec..switching back to stock Rom using safestrap rebooted and it all went back to normal charging ok. Went back to custom rom again no issues after that...

I tired this last night and unfortunately it didn't fix the issue. I have multiple OEM chargers and none of them are working correctly. Once my wife gets home today I'll try her cable to see if it makes a difference. I'm really hoping I can get this figured out because I have never received a good refurbished phone from vzw under warranty. I may even resort to just using the wireless charging and ordering the oem battery/external charger combo. Has anyone ever replaced the port itself?

I have never done this repair, and it's not too encouraging that the iFixit teardown in Step 7 mentions that the USB connector sub-assembly is "glued to the phone". (Looks like step 5 could be skipped maybe).
I note that the images in this eBay listing shows "SM-N9005" stenciled right on the assembly ... I wonder if this sub-assembly would be any different from carrier to carrier? Seems sort of unlikely that Sammy would silk-screen a specific variant Model # on that assembly if it were the exact same part on all variants. (But maybe you can inquire of the eBay seller - at least the piece prices are pretty inexpensive). I didn't spend much time searching; maybe there are other sellers with the SM-N900V assembly.

I found some videos on youtube of people replacing them, it seems like it's one of the easier parts to replace on the phone. I'll probably give it a try. I'll post the result if that fixes my issue. From doing some reading about the part, it is semi carrier specific because where the antenna cable goes. I'm hoping to get this done sometime this week. For now I'm just using my wireless charger to make due.

If you find a supplier for the SM-N900V part and it's in the same price range, send me a PM with the link... I might buy one on speculation (I typically don't buy a new phone every two years so it might be a good idea to have a spare part on hand just in case the port goes bad).
I installed a new usb port and now it seems to have fixed the problem. My usb 3.0 cable fits snuggly again and I'm not getting any weird messages. Hope this helps any one who has the issue

Good news! Do you have a URL for the part supplier?
I experienced this today with my Note 3. I have all kinds of charging cables and right now after a few reboots a random USB 3.0 charger that I got from Amazon is doing the job. I noticed the phone no longer charging when I plugged it into the USB 3.0 port in my computer last night but I was doing a heavy amount of tethering so I didn't think all that much of it at the time.
