Is there a way to get Google Assistant to respond with the screen completely turned off? As of right now I can only get it to turn on while the lock screen is showing.

Unfortunately, no.

Only Moto devices can do that, sadly.

Moto Display not unlocking phone

Basically when I swipe down it doesn't unlock the phone, rather it sits there until I press the power button which unlocks the device.

I am having this exact same issue intermittently since I upgraded for Marshmallow. Any solutions?
Still seeing this issue. Has anyone found a fix for it?
Thanks!
I never even know moto display can unlock your lockscreen.. I never even saw that on Lolipop interesting

Still seeing this issue. Anyone having the same problems?
I've had it happen only rarely, to fix it I just went into Moto Display and turned it off and back on.

Any Chance you are using PowerNap on your phone? If so whitelist moto display in that. Should solve the issue.

Nope not using powernap. Any other apps that might cause this? It's intermittent.
I even did a factory reset and its still happening.

Nope not using any of those.
I had the same problem, it started happening randomly. I found that it did unlock by swiping down sporadically, consecutive times, but then it went back to not working, even after factory resetting, etc. An alternative you can use is ambient display, which works basically the same as Moto Display, on custom roms, like RR or AICP. You can activate it by picking it up and by waving your hand over the top sensor.

After Power ON, MUST use Knock Code first instead of fingerprint?

Anyone else seeing this behavior? On my 995, whenever I restart, or power on my phone.. I have to use the Knock Code to get into my phone, and it says "fingerprints unavailable for use" or something to that effect.
I find this odd behavior.
Its not odd behavior its LG behavior.
Unfortunately there's no way around it.
turn off secure startup in security...
Your fingerprint is encrypted and you phone can't access encrypted data until you unlock it after a reboot. So its kinda a catch 22 where you will always have to unlock with a pin after startup instead of fingerprint. Your fingerprint is biometric data and obviously can't be changed so it needs to more secure on your phone than your pin which you can change. It is this way on most phones with fingerprint readers.

It's not just LG, my Samsung S7 and Note 7 both required pin code on first log in after a reboot/boot up
It's part of Android now.

It's not even Android. My work phone is an iPhone and it has the same behavior. Which drives me nuts because our work phones require us to change pin codes every couple of months and we can't recycle codes.
I turned off secure startup as I don't need kids messing with my phone and I imagine after ten attempts if wipes it?

If I'm right, the op is taking about setting the fingerprint to unlock but it still requires the pattern. You will notice this if you use a third party app or launcher to lock screen. E.g. Nova launcher double tap to lock screen. It will tell you fingerprint is unavailable.
A work around to this is to doubly tap the top part of the screen (the bar where the date and signal strength is).
This will allow you to unlock with fingerprint.
If you use the stock lg launcher then double tapping anywhere on screen shows you to unlock using fingerprint.

I'm working with a developer of Screen Lock Pro to try and find a workaround for this. Currently his app will work on Android 5 and 6 by delaying the lock for 5-10 seconds but it's currently not working on Android 7 on LG (it is working on Pixel and Nexus devices).
Hmmm... Not sure I understand this behavior. My fingerprint is much more complex than a 4-digit code that can eventually be brute-forced (phone wipe or not - in theory I mean).. so why wouldn't my fingerprint be the top-most factor in unlocking the phone? I mean.. say I'm one of those guys that uses his last four of an SSN like an idiot, and someone knows that about me.. boom, they're in my phone. Do iPhones do this for real (as stated above)?

Yup, every time I restart my iPhone, it asks for my pin number and the finger print reader is inoperable. Even when I don't restart my iPhone for a while, it will occasionally lock out the reader and require a pin to wake.

Had to figure out where in the menus to dig through to find out who it is. (I seriously do not like how Apple sets their phones up.) Looks like it is AWMDM.

I always assume as much. Not really a bother for me. The iPhone is a work phone that I don't like carrying or touching. My personal phone is always my go to for anything unless it is work related.
I have this on my nexus 6p also. When ever i reboot the phone it requires me to use my pattern to unlock. It's a "feature" of sorts. Not going to go into my thoughts as to why but i think i may understand why they did that.
In case anyone is wondering, a few conditions that force you to use backup method are being left alone (with no smart locks enabled or active) for 4 hours, a reboot, and a failed scan 5 times in a row.
The reboot case is due to encrypted data (no matter what you do, your phone is encrypted on boot, unless you fix that, however, you phone will still treat it as such). The only reason I can imagine for the time out is in case a ninja chops off your fingers in your sleep. As for the wrong input, that seems annoying sure, but odds are if you got the fingerprint wrong 5 times in a row, it's not you.
Yeah v10 does this as well on fresh boot ups.
I'm not sure I understand the reason behind it I would think it would be less secure this way.

I'm not sure I'm following as to why encryption matters. Are you saying my fingerprint data is encrypted? If so, why isn't my PIN also encrypted?
Speaking of fingerprints has anyone run into the issue where the phone "forgets" your print? I have had this happen at random times and while the fingerprint data is still saved the phone fails to recognize my finger so I have to set it up again.

OK google

Has anyone gotten ok google to work outside of the app itself? I have it turned on, but it won't recognized my command outside of the app. I'm aware of the s voice issues in the past but this phone doesn't have S voice so I don't know what else could be interfering.

You are correct on that. However if you say "OK Google" and then press the power button it unlocks and launches the assistant. So, yea rather weird...
I came from a Nexus 6p and used this all the time. And noticed instantly something was up when it never unlocked my phone. I ended up retraining my voice model a million times because of it.
My Google does searches without me saying ok google.
It's funny at work as I have conversations and suddenly my phone has found what was talking about.

Screen Lock Problem - Randomly Stops Requiring Passcode/Iris/Fingerprint

After a couple days of using my phone without a reboot I notice that it stops requiring unlock credentials such as my pin, iris or fingerprint. I will be able to swipe to unlock the phone and the security is completely removed.
Has anyone else noticed this? If I reboot the phone the security goes back to normal.
The only app I have that I think could cause this is BxAction to remap my bixby button to google now.
Under settings > security > smart lock there are options for keeping your phone unlocked in certain situations, e.g. in trusted places or when connected to a particular bluetooth, check to see if nothing is enabled there, and usually it locks after a reboot like you listed
Stupid question: have you enabled face recognition?
Did you set your screen lock to happen immediately or is it delayed?

Ok so I uninstalled bxactions to see if it was causing the problem. It appears it was not the culprit.
I currently have my phone setup to use iris, fingerprint and pin. It will work normally for approx one day.
Then all of a sudden it doesn't require my credentials to unlock. I have smart lock setup to not require credentials when connected to BT in my truck and when at the GPS location of my house. I'm currently sitting at work and it's swiping to unlock without reading my iris or fingerprint.
My lock delay is 5 seconds and auto when I press the lock button.
If I reset the phone it starts working normally again.
Now that I think about it I have a feeling its something to do with smart lock thinking I'm either still at home or that I'm still in my truck.
I'm having the same exact problem and I have the same exact setup as you! It started doing this a couple days ago. I have Smart Lock set to keep the phone unlocked when I'm at home (GPS coordinates) and when connected to bluetooth in my car. I got to school yesterday and noticed the phone wasn't requiring my irises or fingerprint anymore. I let it be for a little while to see if it would correct by itself and it didn't. I restarted the phone and that fixed it but it did it again this morning! It seems as though Smart Lock isn't registering I'm not at home or in my car. This is huge security flaw.

If others are having this issue then I agree as well this is a huge issue.
I just went home on my lunch break and the screen lock is still working normally. I connected to my truck when I was on my way home. I didnt pay attention if it was requiring any type of unlock when I was home.

I don't have that setting checked either. Just bt for car and gps for house. Not a huge deal for me personally because I'm pretty much always around people I trust but this really is a huge security flaw if it is happening to a lot of people.
Are you looking at the screen when swiping the lock screen? The iris recognition is actually very fast and you only see the alignment screen if it cannot immediately read your iris.

No I purposely pointed it away from my face to test this.
I haven't had it happen since the day after creating this post. I wonder if some Samsung apps were updating over night and causing the issue.

Weird how they would be linked. I did notice that my fingure print gestures stopped working the other day too. I turned the setting off and back on and it started working.
After several days of the phone working properly when I traveled out of town, it is doing this again. I am at school, which is not a location I am using for trust locations, and the phone is staying unlocked. This is honestly pretty ridiculous and needs to be addressed. The only thing I can think is that I am connected to the same wifi network at my apartment (campus housing that is off campus) and while on campus. Maybe the phone is thinking I'm still in the same location since the wifi networks are the same?

Oreo locks down Google assistant even MORE?

Back when Oreo was in beta, I read reports of people finally being able to activate Google assistant while the screen is off. However, now that I have the official update, it still doesn't seem possible. And even more so, I can't even trigger GA to unlock my phone from the lock screen- Google's settings say it is blocked by my phone's administrator, something that was never an issue in Nougat.
Has anyone else noticed the same and/or gotten GA to work from a locked or turned off screen?
Hi. I didn't have any problems to unlock or activate my device with the google assistant on Oreo. But I had the same issues like you with Nougat.

Is there a setting to enable in Google settings that I'm not seeing? Did you need to disable Bixby or something?
Ahh dang! I got it working to turn my screen on, but I can't get it to unlock my screen. Looks like it is most likely due to my "Work Mode" profile for my job, it seems like Smart Lock itself is disabled.

On nougat I tried everything to unlock my phone with google assistant. It worked only 1 or 2 times and then Bixby or some other Samsungstuff dominated GA so the GA couldn't recognize my voice.
On Oreo it works fine. I have never activated Bixby Home and Bixby Voice after flashing and wiping my actual ROM.
