After a couple days of using my phone without a reboot I notice that it stops requiring unlock credentials such as my pin, iris or fingerprint. I will be able to swipe to unlock the phone and the security is completely removed.
Has anyone else noticed this? If I reboot the phone the security goes back to normal.
The only app I have that I think could cause this is BxAction to remap my bixby button to google now.
Under settings > security > smart lock there are options for keeping your phone unlocked in certain situations, e.g. in trusted places or when connected to a particular bluetooth, check to see if nothing is enabled there, and usually it locks after a reboot like you listed
Stupid question: have you enabled face recognition?
Did you set your screen lock to happen immediately or is it delayed?

Ok so I uninstalled bxactions to see if it was causing the problem. It appears it was not the culprit.
I currently have my phone setup to use iris, fingerprint and pin. It will work normally for approx one day.
Then all of a sudden it doesn't require my credentials to unlock. I have smart lock setup to not require credentials when connected to BT in my truck and when at the GPS location of my house. I'm currently sitting at work and it's swiping to unlock without reading my iris or fingerprint.
My lock delay is 5 seconds and auto when I press the lock button.
If I reset the phone it starts working normally again.
Now that I think about it I have a feeling its something to do with smart lock thinking I'm either still at home or that I'm still in my truck.
I'm having the same exact problem and I have the same exact setup as you! It started doing this a couple days ago. I have Smart Lock set to keep the phone unlocked when I'm at home (GPS coordinates) and when connected to bluetooth in my car. I got to school yesterday and noticed the phone wasn't requiring my irises or fingerprint anymore. I let it be for a little while to see if it would correct by itself and it didn't. I restarted the phone and that fixed it but it did it again this morning! It seems as though Smart Lock isn't registering I'm not at home or in my car. This is huge security flaw.

If others are having this issue then I agree as well this is a huge issue.
I just went home on my lunch break and the screen lock is still working normally. I connected to my truck when I was on my way home. I didnt pay attention if it was requiring any type of unlock when I was home.

I don't have that setting checked either. Just bt for car and gps for house. Not a huge deal for me personally because I'm pretty much always around people I trust but this really is a huge security flaw if it is happening to a lot of people.
Are you looking at the screen when swiping the lock screen? The iris recognition is actually very fast and you only see the alignment screen if it cannot immediately read your iris.

No I purposely pointed it away from my face to test this.
I haven't had it happen since the day after creating this post. I wonder if some Samsung apps were updating over night and causing the issue.

Weird how they would be linked. I did notice that my fingure print gestures stopped working the other day too. I turned the setting off and back on and it started working.
After several days of the phone working properly when I traveled out of town, it is doing this again. I am at school, which is not a location I am using for trust locations, and the phone is staying unlocked. This is honestly pretty ridiculous and needs to be addressed. The only thing I can think is that I am connected to the same wifi network at my apartment (campus housing that is off campus) and while on campus. Maybe the phone is thinking I'm still in the same location since the wifi networks are the same?

I just tried this as my screen lock isn't currently not working.it didn't make a difference having gestures turned on or off. I tried turning wifi and GPS on and off as well. Only way to get it to work again is reboot.

My N4 was away to repair a broken screen. Got it back on Wednesday and it immediately updated to 4.3. All was well, except for one weird issue where hitting a notification from the pull down would take me to the app via the pattern lock. I put this down to having played with some lock screen settings in Setting Profiles app (trying to disable it in certain settings), but it might not have been.
I've done the first device restart today, and after rebooting there are a few big issues.
1. I don't appear to have any mobile network, though wifi is connected. I had a good signal before the reboot.
2. I'm not getting a lock pattern or any lock screen at all, and it's not asked for the SIM pin
3. Hitting a notification in the pull-down makes the 'lock' clicking sound as it takes me to the app
4. The home button doesn't work. I see a slight dim of the screen and it makes the lock click sound, but nothing happens. Back and multitask work fine
Help! Any ideas? Are they known issues? Can't seem to find any reference online.
I'm on stock, using Nova Launcher

Those are not any known issues or anything I have read since Andrid 4.3 came out. Try a factory reset to see if that solves the problem. If not, maybe the screen wasn´t the only thing broken on your device. Ask for warranty.
Thanks, will see how I get on this evening and try a factory reset if it doesn't fix itself.
Seems to be a weird problem related to the lock screen and when it should/shouldn't kick in...

Glad I could help.
Ok, I've done a factory reset. Not had much chance to play as it took hours to reinstall everything. But I've just had the word issue where selecting something from the notification tray (the setting profiles shortcut) took me to the lock screen to put in my pattern first, then took me to the app.
EDIT no pattern to when it does it, seems random and can be while I'm using the device, so the lock screen shouldn't kick in for any reason
Any ideas? Faulty device?
Anyone else seeing this behavior? On my 995, whenever I restart, or power on my phone.. I have to use the Knock Code to get into my phone, and it says "fingerprints unavailable for use" or something to that effect.
I find this odd behavior.
Its not odd behavior its LG behavior.
Unfortunately there's no way around it.
turn off secure startup in security...
Your fingerprint is encrypted and you phone can't access encrypted data until you unlock it after a reboot. So its kinda a catch 22 where you will always have to unlock with a pin after startup instead of fingerprint. Your fingerprint is biometric data and obviously can't be changed so it needs to more secure on your phone than your pin which you can change. It is this way on most phones with fingerprint readers.

It's not even Android. My work phone is an iPhone and it has the same behavior. Which drives me nuts because our work phones require us to change pin codes every couple of months and we can't recycle codes.
I turned off secure startup as I don't need kids messing with my phone and I imagine after ten attempts if wipes it?

If I'm right, the op is taking about setting the fingerprint to unlock but it still requires the pattern. You will notice this if you use a third party app or launcher to lock screen. E.g. Nova launcher double tap to lock screen. It will tell you fingerprint is unavailable.
A work around to this is to doubly tap the top part of the screen (the bar where the date and signal strength is).
This will allow you to unlock with fingerprint.
If you use the stock lg launcher then double tapping anywhere on screen shows you to unlock using fingerprint.

I'm working with a developer of Screen Lock Pro to try and find a workaround for this. Currently his app will work on Android 5 and 6 by delaying the lock for 5-10 seconds but it's currently not working on Android 7 on LG (it is working on Pixel and Nexus devices).
Hmmm... Not sure I understand this behavior. My fingerprint is much more complex than a 4-digit code that can eventually be brute-forced (phone wipe or not - in theory I mean).. so why wouldn't my fingerprint be the top-most factor in unlocking the phone? I mean.. say I'm one of those guys that uses his last four of an SSN like an idiot, and someone knows that about me.. boom, they're in my phone. Do iPhones do this for real (as stated above)?

Yup, every time I restart my iPhone, it asks for my pin number and the finger print reader is inoperable. Even when I don't restart my iPhone for a while, it will occasionally lock out the reader and require a pin to wake.

I always assume as much. Not really a bother for me. The iPhone is a work phone that I don't like carrying or touching. My personal phone is always my go to for anything unless it is work related.
I have this on my nexus 6p also. When ever i reboot the phone it requires me to use my pattern to unlock. It's a "feature" of sorts. Not going to go into my thoughts as to why but i think i may understand why they did that.
In case anyone is wondering, a few conditions that force you to use backup method are being left alone (with no smart locks enabled or active) for 4 hours, a reboot, and a failed scan 5 times in a row.
The reboot case is due to encrypted data (no matter what you do, your phone is encrypted on boot, unless you fix that, however, you phone will still treat it as such). The only reason I can imagine for the time out is in case a ninja chops off your fingers in your sleep. As for the wrong input, that seems annoying sure, but odds are if you got the fingerprint wrong 5 times in a row, it's not you.
Yeah v10 does this as well on fresh boot ups.
I'm not sure I understand the reason behind it I would think it would be less secure this way.

I'm not sure I'm following as to why encryption matters. Are you saying my fingerprint data is encrypted? If so, why isn't my PIN also encrypted?
Speaking of fingerprints has anyone run into the issue where the phone "forgets" your print? I have had this happen at random times and while the fingerprint data is still saved the phone fails to recognize my finger so I have to set it up again.

Is there anyone experiencing that no matter what lock I use, my phone always allows me to just swipe up once to unlock? I tried facial unlock & that works flawlessly, but I also added the secondary pattern and I still swipe up once and my phone just unlocks completely. I also disabled facial recognition with just primary pattern or number lock as the security and the phone still opens right up like no security is on it at all.
Anyone have a solution for this or does this seem like another bug for a future update?

Welcome

So it's this a bug? Trusted devices should unlock only when phone is connected or in vicinity to them.
Also seeing this same behaviour. My home wifi is a trusted device and obviously it unlocks when I'm connected to it, but now for the second time I've been away from home for over 2 hours and it happily unlocks with just swipe. It only asks for biometrics if I reboot the phone. So it seems that there's a bug in trusted sources whereby it believes its still connected to wifi for some time after you disconnect!
I had to disable my trusted place (home) even though I was 100km away to fix the issue.
Lock Security not Working
It may also be the On-Body Detection is set to ON under the Smart Lock feature
The way I fixed mine after reading all of these posts was Settings>Lock Screen and Security>Secure Lock Settings>(Enter Pin or whatever security option you have enabled)>Secured Lock Time>, then add the diode to the first selection, "Instantly with the power key or when the screen times out." Then it prompted my security feature everytime the phone locked. When adding a timeout period if you lock with the lock button for some reason it thinks you did it by choice (owner) and figures you will open it without the need to input security feature. I have everything mentioned above off so, I was baffled as to why it didn't prompt my pin option. Now timeout or self lock (by owner) it prompts pin all the time. Hope this helps.
Note 8
Mine has the same issue. but i dont have any trusted devices. i think its a bug in the software. It only asks for pin or iris scan after a couple of minutes being locked otherwise i can just swipe and it unlocks which is ****.
Don't do hard resets, login to the samsung account, go to find my mobile, then unlock your phone from there, it will delete the password. It will tell you to use a pin for access to samsung and the phone etc. Add the pin into the phone, then unlock the phone when you're on the phone screen. This will wipe off the passcode, this is so your settings don't keep restarting (happened to my note 8). Next part is to clear credentials in the settings and reset settings. None your data, apps will be affected, just the theme and basic security stuff. Now you can finally reset your pattern to however to you want it to be. As good as gold! Hope this helps.
Thanks a lot. I finally figured out what the issue was. My On-Body-Detection in the Smart Lock settings was On.
Just go to Setting -->Lock Screen and Security --> Smart Lock. Deactivate all the options there.
I have a Moto E4 and I have a secondary pattern up and everytime I swipe up it unlocks it instead of making me put in the pattern
Hi, I've been using the essential phone for several days. I've installed lots of apps and other than a random glitch now and then, thinks have worked well. The system seems to be considerably faster than a Galaxy S8.
Two problems have recently surfaced. Smart lock is totally messed up (It was working for a while.) Now, when I get to the point in Security settings where I enter my pin, I get a blank screen. I've tried all sorts of things save a system reset. Smart Lock itself doesn't work any longer.
The other issue is intermittent freezes that last several seconds. Whatever the system is doing, it isn't responding at all. If I wait for a while, it proceeds to work fine.
Has anyone seen similar behaviors? Any suggestions short of a hard reset?
Thanks

Ok, so it seems like the same issue is showing up for OnePlus devices since recently: https://forums.oneplus.net/search/13954406/?q=smart+lock&o=date&c[title_only]=1
I can get mine to freeze consistently by using chrome and browsing to flipboard.com. After I login the whole phone will freeze, not even the power button doesn't do anything. I've tested it out on a few other devices and I get the same response from my Nexus 9, also running 7.1.1. In this case at least I don't believe it's the phone but something to do with Android itself.
I'm getting the freeze as well but my power button works, when I turn off the screen and turn it back on it works for a few seconds and then freezes again

You had the Smart Lock issue too?! I did a Factory Reset to fix it here, no amount of powering off/on the device, toggling Smart Lock in "Trust Agents" did the trick, it just...was blank one day. I've had the freezes as well, haven't noticed those after the Factory Reset now that I think about that.

Interestingly, the pauses and stuttering disappeared at the same time. It is exceedingly difficult to convert these anecdotal comments into a meaningful diagnosis.

I have experienced a few freezes. Only after the phone sits for an extended period of time and it goes to sleep and after a restart. I actually haven't had this happen lately, seems like things some how worked themselves out. As far as smart lock I haven't had any such issue. I do have a question regarding smart lock. Do you guess have an option for enabling it when it is connected to a specific Bluetooth device?

All the on/off tinkering with trust agents has worked for me, but the fix has always been temporary. Smart Lock will be OK for a day or so before returning to its broken state/blank screen in the settings. Wish there was someone (a company) who knew what this was about and could fix it.

It's Smart Lock issue itself, not device specific. It literally never worked on my HTC 10, was spotty on HTC U11 and Tab S3, and is still spotty on S10+.
Google attempted to fix location problem in SL couple times already (they even disabled Trusted Places for short time) but to no avail.
