I had received a small OTA update (about 26 MB) on my i9500 one day which upgraded it from MJ5 to MJ9, but I was facing severe battery issues since then. Like, it would take over 3 hours to charge completely and battery would completely drain in 7 hours even when device is idle and power saving mode is enabled, often it was discharging even when plugged. Then things got more serious, like it wouldn't even charge at all, battery was stuck at 1% for several hours. I somehow managed to get it to 27% and then decided to downgrade back to MJ5, using the firmware from SamMobile. I flashed it with Odin but then things went wrong, the process failed, and my device won't boot at all. All it says is,"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I tried again to flash it, but same results.
There was essential data in my device, which wasn't backed up. I want to recover my device without losing any data. That's the major priority. And a minor one is to try to resolve the battery issues.
I need the help urgently, anything anyone could tell me would be highly appreciated.
Verizon Note 3 here, I received the Lollipop ota today and thought no harm in taking it as I was already stuck without root on 4.4.4.
It worked ok for the first couple minutes, then a reboot, then same thing, about 5 minutes and a reboot. Sometimes ~2 minutes, seems using it in any situation made the reboots happen. I did a factory reset thinking that would clear things up. Unfortunately now it is even worse, as it's rebooting anywhere from the first touch to the screen, to about 15 seconds of activity, literally dozens of reboots.
I downloaded the update on my pc and installed via Odin hoping that the ota was just corrupted or some bad luck like that. Nothing changed at all.
It will idle after booting just fine, I just can't do much of anything, every touch of the screen feels like a roll of the dice. Every few reboots or so I can make it to settings maybe but haven't been able to actually change much of anything, not that it would seem to matter here.
I've flashed via Odin twice, cleared the cashe many times, factory reset 3 or 4 times. Am I screwed here? What else to try?
*UPDATE* I flashed back to 4.4.4 with Odin and no more issues. It appears that my device alone is completely incompatible with the new firmware.
I should also note that I tried airplane mode, safe mode, and removing the sd card with no improvements.
After hours of messing with this thing and nearly giving up, not half an hour after I post here for help, I seem to have found a solution, although hopefully not a permanent one. The problem was happening when I would touch the screen, not scrolling ever, but making selections. On a whim I turned off sound and bam, no crashes.
I would still love it if someone had some insight about this problem, or better yet a solution.
I'm not sure yet if it is just the keypress sound that is killing it, or all sounds. I never did have any issues with the stock keyboard clicks now that I think of it, only the menu press sound. In any case it's not every time it made the sound, just half the time or so. Anything anybody could add to this would be appreciated.
*Edit* Not a solution, but it did help.
Well it's not as stable as I'd hoped. More like before the first factory reset now, but still not good at all. The various sounds definitely trigger crashes quickly(menu options, volume pings, mp3 songs from sd card), but regular silenced menu presses do sometimes as well still. Phone also bootloops several times often before it can get booted stable and 100% always crashes immediately if I try to unlock the screen in the first 5-10 seconds after booting up. Not sure if I'll be able to call or text as it's too late to test that atm. I'll update tomorrow, any insight appreciated.
I would say a bad download but I don't remember if ODIN checks MD5 sums (pretty sure it does). I would do a full wipe and reflash the stock image with odin
I am 100% stock not rooted never been rooted 5.0 vzw and I have had a couple of reboots. Never ever had one on this phone before. My old note 3 was rooted but I got this replacement after the root exploits had all been closed.
ehh not all have been closed
What is the root exploit for Verizon Note 3 with 5.0?

None at the current time but CVE-2014-8609 seems like it could be some use
I spoke too soon when I said the phone was usable now. At best 5 minutes of light use as anything seems to crash it now. I did get a fresh image and used it with Odin with exactly the same result which makes me think its my phones hardware or something. Just seems crazy that it was working just fine before the update. The reason I pushed to 4.4.4 and lost root is because my phone suddenly started an issue where it would crash when making or receiving calls. It wasn't caused by any new apps or anything, just out of nowhere. I tried everything then updated as a last resort, carelessly I went to 4.4.4 instead of staying at 4.4.2 and lost chance of root, but it solved the problem I was having. I wonder if the issue is related somehow.
I was able to odin back to 4.4.4 and it's working fine so far, I assumed that you would not be able to revert back like the last ota and just tried it as a nothing to lose last effort. This is very important news to anybody that is having major issues with 5.0. Maybe, just maybe I'll try it again if they make an update patch for reported issues.
But for now, 4.4.4 it is for me.
VZW Note 3 update to Lollipop
I just finished the Lollipop update and my phone is working great for the past 30 minutes. Seems a little slower then usual but have had no issues besides my phone locking up after downloading the update, may have been due to my phone running down to 14%, but after removing the battery for 20 secs and putting it back on, phone came back on, I plugged into charger and started the update. Will post later if I have any issues.
I have been trying unsuccessfully through odin to downgrade but it keeps failing in odin, I downloaded the official firmware from sammobile.
Just curious if u r tried reinstalling newer odin? Try different USB port and cable. At this point maybe even try different pc if u have access to 1
Hey guys, i have been owning this piece of great phone for almost two years. But it never gave me a big issue.
Nevertheless, few months back i flashed cm12 and it worked great too.. I had been using it gracefully till i decided to update to cm12.1. So i decided to update, but the update always crashed google play services. The update did not happen automatically so i had to flash the zip through custom recovery (already installed) by myself.
I could not come out of that so i went ahead and did a full wipe and flashed cm12.1 along with gapps. Since then when i am unplugged it goes only to about few minutes (on battery) and shuts down. So, i now decided that this piece of update is buggy and did a full wipe and reflashed the original cm12 zip and gapps which i had placed in the first place. But, to my horror even this time it could not go past the bootscreen even and turns itself off when its about to start up. (Battery is full charged, did an overnight charge as well). One very unusual thing i noticed that almost all the the time i try to power it on it showed me "optimising app X of Y" which is weird. This kinda happens only on first boot.
But if i keep my phone plugged in to ac charge then it works fine.. but only last night it hanged and turned off even on charge. So there i decided that the cm thing is not for me. So i followed this tutorial and flashed the stock 5.1.1 rom (did a full wipe, tried oem lock and re unlocked and proceeded too).
But, i find the same problem same issue!! When unplugged my device, it just turns off even on full battery charge.
Can someone explain me the technical parts of the issue and what has gone wrong and how it can be fixed?
Please, Thanks
EDIT
Last time i locked - unlocked bootloader and proceeded with a fresh factory image flash, the device turned off on boot even when plugged in to my mac and it's hot on the back side
Sounds to me like there''s something physically wrong with the phone, probably the battery. Time for a new one anyway. Lithium batteries degrade with use. After ~500 charge cycles it'll have lost upwards of 20% of its original capacity and might show other signs of wearing out like inconsistent voltages. After 2 years of use, you'll be well beyond 500 cycles. A new battery off eBay is pretty cheap, and some sellers include the needed tools.Go to ifixit.com for a tear-down guide. A hair drier can help soften up the adhesive. The fact that it turned off despite being plugged in to your computer also points to the battery being toast - the USB amperage from a computer is less than the typical wall charger.
If it's not the battery giving you woes, I don't know what it could be.
And FYI, the whole "optimizing app" thing is the OS rebuilding the cache. When you flash your GAPPs package or a zipped Titanium backup it has to build the cache for the new apps. Same as when you do the "wipe Dalvik and cache" part of standard flashing procedure to avoid conflicts. In order for apps to load quickly, Android stores a lot of the necessary data in cache, so when you clear it or have new apps, it has to rebuild the cache. On Lollipop this takes a loooooooong time because of the way ART works.

How can i be completely sure that it's the battery which needs to be replaced? The battery shows charge. When i plug in and boot up it shows enough battery power left.
Currently, without external power it does not go past the google screen on boot. When i plug in power while device is off, the battery meter shows just a little depletion from full charge. When turned on, battery level is 82 %
After all , all this hardware mess up can be the consequence of a bad cm flash ?

I know this. Earlier it was happening on each boot. Now it seemed to be stopped.
By any chance did you have your phone charging while flashing and booting up your ROM?

Exactly same problem is started with my Nexus 4 ... I really wonder, what is causing this. Meanwhile, have it sorted for you ? is that hardware (Battery) issue?

I too am facing kinda similar problem.
It first started on my stock Lollipop 5.1.1. I had kept it on charge and when I removed it, it got switched off. Thinking that it might be just another of the multitude of bugs in Lollipop, since I already had lots of problems with it, I decided to flash CM 12.1 Stable on it.
Unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP recovery, created a backup (using TWRP), wiped data, cache, dalvik and started installing CM 12.1. Now comes the problem, I selected 'restart system' and it did restart and CyanogenMod logo was displayed for few minutes before the phone crashed. I switched it on again normally and the Google logo got displayed, and then again phone got off just after the Google logo. I tried flashing again by same procedure, but this time not even the Cyanogen logo was displayed. The Google logo got displayed and the went off.
Then I decided to restore the backup. Restored it but it still had the same problem at the startup Google logo.
Now I have managed to install CM 12.1, which works fine unless I don't open certain apps. When I open certain apps like Phone or Clock (those are some I have tried yet), it crashes the system.
This maybe a hardware or software problem, but pretty sure it isn't battery problem, coz it retains good charge when I switch it back on after crash.

Since you already unlocked the bootloader, and therefore already wiped everything, you could try flashing a factory image.
I also got the same problem. I thought this is battery problem, so I replaced the battery but problem still there. I thought this is problem of lollipop, never installed CM or anything. It is always running stock android. After that I even downgrade to Kitkat stock version still it is not working. One more thing I noticed is If I don't unlock the device than it will be powered on, but as soon as I unlock it and if it is not plugged in to charger it will be switched off. Any suggestion what should I do?
I have the same thing for several month now.
Always thought it is the dying battery.

Just tried flashing Lollipop 5.1.1 (LMY48I) factory image. The same problem still exists. Faced few weird problems on running the first time. Following scenarios explains it exactly...
Not On Charge: Crashes after startup Google logo
Connected to Laptop (USB Charge): Crashes a few minutess after entering "Optimizing apps" screen
On Charger (AC): Completed the install (optimizing apps and setup) without problems
Now I can access the home screen and menu without problems. But when I start any app, phone will go off. Not just apps, at times even when the recent apps menu is opened.

When you flashed the factory image did you do it via fastboot or by flashing a zip file. If you used the zip file I would suggest you do it with fastboot.

By "flashing zip" you mean using "fastboot update" command? ...If so, nope I didnt. I extracted all compressed files and then flashed each of the img's using fastboot. Flashed a total of 6 img files.

I m too facing the similar issues. Phone is getting turned off suddenly when not charging, on charging it is working fine. i have done factory reset and also done factory image reset to 5.1.0. i m still facing the same issues. I don't think so it is related to battery. if anyone have the solution then please let me know.

Try the very basic flash technique by double clicking the flash-all.bat. It's not the same as flashing the imgs one by one.
Battery is the issue. Get it changed. I also faced same problem, and visited LG service center and they changed the battery. Phone working fine now.

Ok so Battery was the problem!! Got it changed, phone working fine now. Thanx all!
Ok guys i confirm that this is a battery issue. I took it to the service center and the guy temporarily replaced battery to show me issue solved... But... there i saw another issue due to which i did not buy the battery. I saw half the touchscreen not working (including the navigation buttons ). The guy at the center told its a h/w issue and i would have to spend 7K on it so i left my phone dead for now. The Question is ... can this be a s/w issue.. or result of bad flash which can solve on reflashing ??
same problem with my nexus ,but one thing i noticed that the phone does not power off while in recovery...Any idea??
I was using my phone one day and it just started restarting. It kept on restarting over and over again. When I plugged in the charger, the phone stopped restarting and was able to turn on normally. The battery was 50% when it started to continuously restart. Once I plugged in the charger, it showed me 50%. After turning on (plugged), I unplugged it, and it took about 20 mins then it's restarting again.
What is the problem with the phone and what should I fix?
Hello,
I have the same problem with my S5 (G900H). I was on Android 5 Lollipop and received the 6.0.1 OTA update and after that the phone became unstable and keeps restarting (unless I connect it to the USB charger).
I have flashed it with Odin and the issue persists. Let's see what we can do to get these phones working again.
Did you received an update recently? What model is your phone? Have you flashed or made a factory reset?
I have the update but the problem happened way after I got it. Unrooted and no factory reset done.

I flashed it with a new stock ROM released from Samsung and now I don't have recovery mode. Keep reflashing with other ROMs to see what happend.
I have fixed the problem. It seemed to be a dodgy battery. Got it replaced.

I'm gonna find a new battery and test it. Thanks.
The new battery will be delivered tomorrow night....
Problem SOLVED!!! Got the new battery and my phone is working again.
Could Samsung thru its OTA updated damage the battery to make you get the new galaxy?
My battery was fine until I got the OTA update!!
Yeah there is a possibility for that but I cant be 100% sure

Hello guys!
I'm facing a veeery weird issue with my ZB602KL.
I've left it charging overnight and when I woke up, it was turned off with 87% of battery.
Turned it on again without any troubles but now the phone just won't stay turned on when idle.
The only way I can leave it blocked without turning itself off is letting some background app running, such as a music player. Otherwise, the phone will go off 30 seconds after I press the lock button.
It doesn't turn off when screen is on or using any apps (no matter how long)... but as soon as I lock it, without anything running on the background, it goes off. :crying:
Any thoughts? Stock ROM, no root, tried factory reset, wiping cache, upgrading the firmwire again and nothing seems to work.
Thank you all for your attention!! :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::good::good:

Morning guys!
Yesterday I spent the phone battery until It reached 0% and left It charging It to 100% without interruptions... But It didn't work as well.
I'm definetely out of ideas
Downgrade the firmware if the problem started after ota update...(you need unlocked bootloader and root for that)..else take it to service center..
this problem happening to me
i've try factory reset and upgrade to android 10 but both still causing this sudden death
anyone has overcome this?
i'm about trying custom rom but still hoping to stick with stock rom
