LG G2 D802 / fried electronic smell / still working but not charging - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just plugged my good old LG G2 D802 32GB to charger that I always used with cable that I always use... and it's not charging.
Unplugged after about a minute and well.. there is that toasted electronic smell from the bottom of the phone...
Phone still works but it has just 10% battery charge so i have switched it off for time being...
Anybody had the same issue? is charging board separate on this phone and just attached to mainboard with ribbon cables? any clues whether swap of charging board from another LG G2 would work? i could probably source phone with broken screen from ebay to use parts... if that makes any sense at all...
if no hope... then maybe it's time I should get myself Q6 or G6 for Xmas... though... till now G2 was doing everything i needed...

The G2 has a separate Micro USB daughter board, yes. It has the big ribbon cables included. But I think most of the charging circuit is on the mainboard.
Does it still connect to a computer, even when not charging? I think the VRMs for power delivery could be indeed on the daughter board.
You can get it quite cheap on ebay, for example here:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-G2-D802...k-Connector-Flex-Ribbon-OEM-Part/171315113072
If it smelled burned, maybe you can detect a burned trace/resistor/transistor on the board, if its on the daughter board, there is a very good chance it will work again after you fixed that

Thanks for the info.
I get "Power surge on USB port" message in Windows when I try to connect it to PC and fried electronic smell immediately returns.
I will try to disassemble phone this weekend and see if there is any obvious damage and where is it located.

Broken Charging Port

Hello Wizard Owners,
Last night, while plugging my Cingular HTC 8125 into my charger, I pushed a little too hard, and had the mini-usb held at a bad angle. The furthest left and furthest right charging pins bent and are now broken off inside the phone. The broken off bits have since been lost, and now when I plug in the mini-usb charger--my phone will not charge. Is there anything I can do to replace the charging pins or modify the phone so it will charge properly? Or do I have a nice expensive paperweight now? Thanks for your help in advance.
There is a thread in my siggy discussing this issue. I'd suggest reading through it and see if any of it can help. Beyond that, see if there is someone locally who can fix it. I paid $50 here in Fresno for my usb port to be repaired.

HTC Wizard (Qtek A9100) Charging Problem.

Hello there,
I was charging my Qtek normally with it's original charger. My sister umplugged it a couple of times to charge up her notebook.
My Qtek won't charge anymore. It's working fine. It turns on, I can use it normally. But It won't charge.
My guess is that something happend to the mini usb plug or circuit, because it won't charge with it's charger, neither with USB cable plugged in the computer. And it can't communicate with the computer trought the cable too. Bluettoh works fine with Actve sync.
Someone have any clue about what happened?
Same thing happens to me today...
I'll show in the Qtek...
But I think that "usb plug" is "unplugged" from motherboard...
Visualy no problem with my usb plug... Welds are well...
So, the problem is IN the USB PLUG ????
I have found some on Ebay :

Is there some doc about ?
Thanks,
I Haven't opened it yet. I'm travelling, and I don't have the proper tools. But tomorrow I'll be back home and I can say if something physical happened.
So rocksull ? USB Plug is dead ?
I bought the connector and and external charger too (5$) with a battery (6$) on EBAY...
But usb plug is sent from USA, so I'll receive it in two weeks...
Bye,
Well.
I opened up my Qtek. The welds were messed up (Cold Solder). I'm just waiting a friend that has a soldering station to see if we can re-solder the plug. I'll post results soon.
Hello Rocksull,
So, It's good for you ?
I tried soldering USB plug, but welds are too small...
So actually I'm using an external battery charger... ((((((
Bye,
I was able to solder the plug back, because I work with that.
It charged again, but the battery didn't last 1 minute. I opened again and saw that the circuit is also messed up. There's one or two transistors burnt, a little capacitor.
Anyway... I gave up. I was about to buy a new cell phone anyway, and I can use the other componentes (LCD screen, camera, etc) to build some projects. =D.
I was able to solder woth a hot air soldering station (I don't know of that's the name) and some liquid weld. We have this stuff because we work with SMD components.

help pls, phone not charging ( not battery point)do i take phone apart?

need help please people.
my phone hasnt been charging properly for a few days now, to get it charging now i have to get one of my missis hair bands and wrap it round my phone and then round the usb cable so it stays in , although today it doesnt want to charge at all now .
ive noticed that the connection in the phone is loose and you can move it round a litle bit,
now the bit i need help with , is do i take the phone apart and try to fix it.?. im thinking of doing this but unsure about taking phone apart ( dont think my phone is under warrenty anymore,) and im guessing the usb connection on the phone is fixed onto a board.
is it worth me trying that or should i just take it to a repair shop ?
take a dry toothbrush, give the usb port a good scrub. dirt often builds up in the bottom of the port and stops the usb plug pushing deep enough to get a good contact.
Have a good inspect of the usb port, bright light and magnifier is good, see if you can see buildup, or a bent connector, or somesuch.
Also look at the usb plug on the cable, its uncommon but not unknown for the metal outer enclosure to open slightly, and make for a weak contact.
Sometimes a cable simply doesn't fit well for no obvious reason, , i have a generic cheap ebay cable that will only work when angled up or down, like yours, but looks perfectly fine, and feels to fit the socket, while the HTC cable works perfectly, so i know its not the port.
If it all looks good, then chances are you have a dodgy connection from the usb port to the mainboard, which will get worse every time you wiggle and bend the cable to get it to work. In this case, you COULD try a repair, but there have been reports on here of some repair shops pronouncing it too fiddly to replace teh usb port, and a new mainboard would be the only other option.
edit - just reread your post and seen that you can wiggle the port. Broken solder, gotta be. Its not an easy solder, so if your a dab hand, then go for it, if not, see above.
Hi iainbp, heresandyboy had this same trouble in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=903977 from post 16.
It looks tricky!
Just a thought though, I recently bought a cheap phone charger with multiple interchangeable heads for different phones. The microUSB one became difficult to charge with and it took me a while to realise that the metal bit at the end had detached from its plastic casing, and when I plugged it into the phone it just got pushed back into the casing. (got my money back)
Possible with yours?

Before I throw my G1 to bin - charging issue

Hi,
I checked many threads with no solution so this is last chance
Did someone recover the phone from no charging issues ? Even if this is hardware.
I have mine old G1 and wanted to give it a second life. I noticed that it does not charge when off (no led) and when on (led red >orange, status on the phone "charging"). It only charge in fastboot mode (led off). I got new battery, charger etc.
I saw it is common thing but last posts are like from 2010. Does not help: wipe battery, changing radio, battery or charger.
It is 1,6 superD.
Maybe it cost low to repair if it is hardware. How the hell it can be it charge in fastboot?
I would get along with it if it was bricked but in this case - it works but does not work if you know what I mean.
Ciao
try cleaning out the usb port with like a toothpick and some rubbing alcohal, my guess is its hardware and the pins to charge normally are damaged but the pin to work in fastboot mode are still intact. if this is the reason why its bad you would either need to solder a new port to the daughterboard (really tricky unless you are a master @ fine soldering)
or replace the whole daughterboard. which of course is very hard to find by itself. more than likley you will have to by a broken/used phone off ebay (maybe as cheap as 10 bucks) with a working usb but whatever else broken and swap daughterboards, pretty easy to do.
but maybe double check if its firmware/software first by reflashing new rom or doubtfully a new radio/spl
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Thanks a lot for the reply.
Indeed buying something with broken screen would do. My soldering capabilities ends on swaping capacitors, far away from micro soldering
Anyway, I tried all other things you have mentioned.
Cheers!

[Q] Are there different kinds of USB ribbon replacements?

Hi all!
I ask because I've got the "classic" phone will not recharge problem on my i9505.
However, I've ordered two boards from different places, both of which function worse than the original.
Original board: Phone will not charge, or thinks it is charging but the cable isn't plugged in- but buttons work. Switching phone off, shorting the battery pins, then inserting the USB cable and battery gets it to charge, however it will not know when you have removed the cable. I am using this board as the phone remains somewhat usable.
New Boards: Phone constantly shows "charging". capacitive buttons do not work.
Are any of you a dab hand at these repair jobs? I'm not new to phone repair (have had to repair most of my phones at least once) but this one doesn't seem to want to play ball.
Any thoughts? Am I doing something stupid? is there a specific board I need for my i9505?
