Hotspot not working post 8.0 - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since updating to 8.0 my hotspot has quit working. Just did a quick search of the forums and haven't seen that on a "list" of known bugs for 8.0. I upgraded to 8.1 beta in hopes that it would have a fix but so far its still not working. It was working prior to updating to 8.0. Any one else having issues? Im not rooted nor do I have TWRP.

Maybe something went wrong during the update process . Do a backup, completely wipe your phone and flash stock image 8.X.X.

was working fine for me in 8.0, updated to 8.1 opm1 (via ota zip from google) and now is hotspot broken for me
interestingly my laptop can ping my phone and it can also ping the gateway address of my phone's data connection
did you resolve your problem?

I fixed this by deleting /data/misc/wifi (using root). This reset all wifi and hotspot stuff.
edit: seems to have broken again - fark google

Not WIFI hotspot but USB tether stopped working for me also. The connection is just detected as a local network with no internet connection.
Was working fine on 8.0, update 8.1 broke it.

edited my apn type and seems to have fixed it. was 'default, supl', cahnged to 'default, supl, dun'

Thanks! My wifi hotspot stopped working after updating with OTA 8.1 yesterday. This fixed it nicely!

Thanks! This also fixed my hotspot which had broken around 8.1 on Telstra mobile network

I flashed lineageos 15.1(android 8.1) on my 6p, having issue with wifi hotspot. The hotspot will stop working but the phone still thinks it's on. Basically I have wifi hotspot no nitification bar, and the togger switch showing on, however, no SSID can be found and previous connected devices got disconnected. Any fix on this?

N6P Hotspot start, stops Wi-Fi.
Checked these advises. Still no result. Logged in on my networkprovider and with data google fi off. I start hotspot. Wi-fi is halted. Hotspot monitor shows my hotspot is sent. Does not show on receivers. Any help is welcome.
Update: I added APN with wifi provider name. And put that in affect. WiFi is still logged in and received but same problem persists.
As soon I start WiFi again, hotspot is set to off.

Same issue here. Im using CM12.1, then I installed Orbot and runs as service. Portable hotspot did run OK with VPN running. This morning after I reboot my device, suddenly other device can't connect to hotspot (very long connecting progress). After I remove Orbot, it fixed.
Another solution can be read HERE that may comply to your issue.

[Help] On Verizon, UDP, hotspot being flaky

Hey all,
So I have UDP with Verizon. Got my phone the other day and activated it before I inserted my VZW sim card. Tethering worked fine until today (after Droid-Life posted about it), and now it will work for a few minutes and then I lose internet connectivity on both the phone and hotspot.
To get around this with my previous Moto X 2013, I used the wifi tethering apk from here: https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ and then only allow one device at a time to connect. This app doesn't seem to work with Android L (or I can't get the settings right).
Is there anything else I can try? Or is there any way to limit devices with the stock tethering?
(edit)
Other info:
Phone is unlocked.
TWRP installed (phone tethered fine after TWRP installed)
Phone is rooted (same as above)
I installed Xposed today, started having issues. Uninstalled Xposed, still have tethering issue.
(edit2)
Wife's phone, a rooted VZW Samsung GS4 is also being flaky with wifi tethering. I'm guessing that it isn't my device tonight...

I have a similar issue but not quite the same. I am also on UDP vzw and the behavior that I get is that the hotspot connection to the Internet is barely usable at all. Some pages load, sometimes but often they timeout. But with all of this the connectivity on the handset itself is unaffected. I'm going to try a usb tether on my Mac with the HoRNDIS package soon to see how the speeds compare. Maybe it's just the wifi tether and sub will be okay?
There have been some that are specifically noticing DNS issues. Maybe that's where the root of the problem is.

Ever since I found out that VZW allows you to add the tethering package to your UDP line and not mess anything up, I bought it and have experienced zero issues. Before that, every few days I would have some bad DNS issues where google would work, but nothing else would. Now my phone is my ISP and I've had no issues.
My (current) network setup: phone (wifi tether) -> bridge computer (internet sharing) -> router (Asus AC66U) -> wired/wireless network.
I haven't tried the bridge computer as an actual network bridge as that caused some flakiness before... but that was when I wasn't paying for tethering. Eventually I'd like to use my phone as a 4g modem that is directly hooked up to my router.

WiFi showing "Connected, no Internet" with exclamation mark

Is anyone else having issues with the 6P or just Marshmallow in general of not being able to connect to any wifi?
think that means connected to network but no internet available
Did you try connecting to a different Wifi network and see if you are having the same issue? I did not see an issue. Might be your router or modem is blocking internet access for your device.

Yes, I tried connecting to multiple wifi networks and it's showing the same thing: "connected, no internet". When I try with another device or laptop, it connects fine to all those wifi networks. It's just my Nexus 5 and 6P running Marshmallow.
I searched around and tried to use a static IP, also changed the frequency band from automatic to 2.4 GHz. Nothing works.
Go to Backup and reset and try a reset on network settings and see if that resolves the issue.
OK, this is interesting. I just found out from a colleague of mine (I'm currently traveling in China), that this is basically saying you are connected to the Internet, but just not to any of the Google services. I just checked and it seems everything pretty much works, except I can't access gmail, Facebook, etc. anything that's blocked by the Great Firewall of China.
Dial *#*#4636#*#* on your phone and select phone information & select run ping test and see if it pings google services. It should have been defaulted to Google, atleast it is on myn.
I'm running into the same issue, but I'm in the US. No WiFi network works. And I don't actually have internet.
The odd thing is all my other devices connect to the networks just fine.
I already tried resetting network settings, and rebooting in safe mode, to no avail. I even reset my router to stock and reconfigured.
Anyone else having similar issues?

I have this - and I am in China. Still getting internet, just not the blocked services and data. I can get the google stuff with vpn, but the exclamation and wireless remains. Cheers.

Oh bottom wrong nexus model... I'm sorry... Didn't notice ?
Sorted it... was my wifi... I changed the channel settings to Auto Performance, then back to Auto Compatibility, and all working again now
Wanted to add for what it's worth: I had the exclamation point on any wifi I connected to and fixed the exclamation point by disabling Adblock Plus.
I've been getting the WiFi exclamation point also. Would AdBlock Plus cause that?

yes ad block was causing it for me too.
i disabled ad blocking from the app, froze the app from titanium backup, removed root access to adblockplus from super su and rebooted and everything is working fine now
Same problem here.
Hard reset and nothing.
The weird thing is that in my house works just fine (5 ghz)

Nexus 6p in China
I am in China. 6P wifi / internet hook up worked fine with Comcast in the US. When I arrived in China I could connect to wifi but it reported no internet access. Went to a Huawei store and they tried hooking up to their local wifi. Same thing - no internet access but connection to wifi made. They sent me to a Huawei testing center 10 minutes away. Got there, the same thing. They could connect with their local wifi but no internet interface. Then they told me they had no permissions to work this phone because it was not authorized inside China. I asked if they could research why it the internet won't connect. They put in a Chinese sim card. WHAM - They could log into the wifi and get internet. Next I tried VPN to see if there was some kind of work around but no avail - VPN needs the internet. The best thing I could I could was to call my service provider to bump up my roaming data speed (Be careful about roaming plan you have - cost $$$$). I have minimal internet access through phone but its not blocked - I can get google.

[SOLVED] Connected to Wifi but no internet connectivity

I was having Wifi issues on the 6P. Connected to home wifi but no internet. The thing is, the wifi would still work randomly. It's possible that it works most of the time but as soon as I go out somewhere and out of the home wifi range, it sometimes messes up when it tries to reconnect to the network.
And yes, I realize it may not be a phone issue but maybe the router (Asus N66U with Tomato firmware).
/edit - well, I spoke too soon and I guess it's not the static IP causing the wifi issues.
It turns out it was a firewall app called AFWall+
Might want to update the title then. Although I do have that issue where when I get home i have to turn off/on wifi on my phone to get a connection.

Are you still having issues or did you find a fix? I am having the exact same problem with the exact same router.

It's hard to say. This problem seems to be random. I haven't experienced it today. The only change I've made is update Cataclysm and ElementalX to the newest versions after installing the latest Android security updates. I can't guarantee I won't experience the problem again since it was happening on and off before.
No amount of disabling wifi and restarting my 6P would get internet connectivity back when the problem is happening. It just seems to start working again randomly. Is that what happens to you too?

I can't really explain it. It says I am connected to WiFi, and speedtest still works along with web browsing most of the time. But the main thing that doesn't work is my google account syncing (so emails wont appear, or delete from ym account when I do so in the app) as well as the play store not downloading or updating apps. I keep seeing issues with 5ghz, so I am gonna try connecting to my 2.4ghz as well as setting the wifi to 2.4 only, as of right now it is working. But its like you said random, and when it does happen restarting is no help. I also just set my phone to use a static ip as I heard that helped some people. I just found it weird that you have the same router and had issues.
Im on Pure Nexus with ElementalX latest update, don't have the latest security patch though.
Its only my Nexus 6p, and it seems I have no issues when I am on my girlfriends wifi. SO I am hoping the 2.4 and static IP solve it, however that sucks cause I want to use my 5ghz, as there are less devices and I get a more solid connection.
I found out it wasn't a problem with the phone or 6.0.1 at all. It was due to a firewall app called AFWall+. I figured it out when I realized internet connectivity would return when I disabled it.
Now, you might think that the app should have been one of the more obvious causes. That's true... but I had it set to Blacklist mode to only block certain apps. Internet wasn't working system wide and it only occurred on Wifi whereas LTE worked fine. So, uninstalling it seems to have fixed the problem and it hasn't happened since. Perhaps it's an issue with systemless root.

[SOLVED] Android 9 and Wifi

I updated from Oreo 5.1.7, encrypted and rooted to Android Pie with a clean install. All works fine, except for some Wifi: at home no problem, but when today I had returned to my office, I cannot use the WiFi anymore, the system keeps saying no internet connection for that WiFi.
Any suggestion?

If the wifi works at home but not at work, let's check your settings again or make a new authentication. It's not a general rom issue, otherwise it will not work in general
Ok, solved (more or less), at my work they changed the configuration of all Access Points during the night.
