Back to full stock (miflash best way?) - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Hey, I've ready 20+ threads here and it seems that miflash is the best way to go completely back to stock?
I'm on A2017U (US model) and I'm on stock through Draken's back to stock zips. If I flash a stock recovery, would that make it fully stock? I have unlocked bootloader.. does that need to be flashed too?
Just want to avoid miflash if I don't have to since it's a huge download and I read it's finicky.
I have the original recovery & boot partitions backed up using axon7tool.exe from when I first bought my phone in August 2016. If I restore those 2, would it work? Would they be out of date from the newest stock roms and cause problems?
Thx

Yes, MiFlash is the best option to get fully stock.

Alright, off to download. Thanks

What file do you use with miflash to go back to full stock? I would like to as well. To get ota and stuff.

EDL files such as the ones in WesTD's own stock edl images thread. of course flashing one from another model is bad. so don't.

Can we get a Step by Step to update to 27?

So my scenario.
I'm on the unlocked B20_boot Build. Rooted. TWRP.
What files are needed to upgrade to B27?
What are the step by step?
I have read through the different threads, but it is confusing at times and rather not make a mistake. It would probably benefit multiple people.
Cheers!
I'm in the same boat. I downgraded to B20 and cannot get the .up file provided recognized in recovery to flash. Using the system updater just puts me right back on B20_Boot. Just using the twrp backup does not flash the B27 firmware.

Correct. I was on stock B20 and downloaded the .up file from the following link: https://dl1.ztems.com/zxmdmp/download.do?doWhat=getUp&filename=firmwarepackages/US/ZTE/ZTE%20A2017U/81526/update_P996A01_B20_to_B27.up. After I downloaded it, I simply changed the .up extension to .zip to try to install through stock recovery. However, it was not even recognized. I even moved it to my SD Card but got the same results.

Maybe verify checksum? That's the method I used (from SD card).
Interesting. ADB Sideload should work if the Apply Update from SD Card method doesn't.

I did that already too. But it still didn't work. Don't worry about it, though. I appreaciate the help, however, I am just going to wait for CyanogenMod to be released. I only wanted to test out the new update. It's not worth the frustration, though. I honestly prefer CyanogenMod.

Don't expect it anytime soon within the next 3 months.
The updates to the firmware and software are substantial enough that I need to find a 100% working method that I can confirm that takes me from B20_boot, downgraded to B20, then updated to B27 from stock recovery.

The best way would be a System Image from ZTE, but we are SOL on that for now.

Do Full Stock files modify bootstack?

Question: If I install a full stock zip, does it overwrite:
Boot stack? <- Yes if from stock recovery / ? if from TWRP
Fastboot? <- Yes if from stock recovery / No if from TWRP
Recovery? <- Yes if from stock recovery / Yes if from TWRP
I've flashed a full stock zip and fastboot. just want to make sure I don't need to also flash stock bootstack for RMA purposes.

If you want to RMA your phone, flash an official zip through the official recovery. Those overwrite the bootstack, the recovery and the bootloader. Or use MiFlash. But I wouldn't risk locking the bootloader with not everything fully stock...
After flashing the official zip use axon7toolkit to relock.
I followed this process and I locked my phone.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73576556&postcount=47
I'll download the latest Official Zip form ZTE and flash it officially just to make sure.

Thanks
I have been able to download OTAs and update this way.
But when I try to flash a Stock update.zip either from SD card or internal storage it gives me an error about not being able to mount the SD card.
Will the OTA updates also overwrite to boot stack?

The phone downloaded the OTA for B19 and was able to run the update. How does ZTE check for a phone having been modified? Are there some steps or commands that can be run to check before sending it in? Should I just reflash the B19 full stock from Miflash to be sure everything is back to stock?

We don't really know if they check it at all. Someone said he sent it unlocked and they disn't even notice.
Just be sure that the 5 second screen doesn't show up when you turn it on. Should be enough

Returning to Stock

I just got this phone and I'm debating on unlocking the bootloader and rooting it and I was just curious if in the future I need to return it to stock (especially for selling it in the future) how do you go about doing that? Do you just flash one of the stock firmwares though TWRP like I found here? http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime/LG/LG_G6/US997/US997-USA/US99714a
Then what do you do if that is correct? Also how do you relock the bootloader? I'm sorry if these are noob questions but I have been out of the modding game for a good while.

Just flash a kdz trough LGup and the phone will be completely stock, no twrp and no root. Then you have to only lock the bootloader by typing "fastboot oem lock". Don't run this command while you have twrp and root!
Ah, and the fact you have relocked the bootloader doesn't mean that you recovered the manufacturer warranty, LG can easily verify if you used the unlock bin.

I did some searching and found this. Is it the correct thing? http://rootmygalaxy.net/download-latest-lgup-tool-for-lg-devices-flash-tool/
Also just to be clear I unlock my bootloader, install TWRP and root the phone. If I ever want to go back to stock for selling the phone or whatever I just download the latest KDZ file like I linked to above and then I flash it to the phone and it will return everything back to stock? Then after that you just do the relock command and the bootloader is closed again?
I appreciate your help. I just to be super clear.

Pretty much yes, search for uppercut if you have driver problems with LGup, and for firmwares this is the best site to download them: https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-h870-firmwares/

Ok then
LGUP
Hi, so I started flashing the kdz on my LG G6 using LGUP and it starts, but then randomly quits out. It's recognising my device and the file is definitely the correct one. Any hints as to why it's not working?
EDIT: I managed to fix it, apparently Windows Defender was seeing Uppercut as a virus and stopping it from creating the files it needed to. So make sure you turn off Windows Defender when you do this.
My experience with returning phone to stock is bad. First unlocked bootloader, installed twrp, bootloader for havoc ROM and ROM itself..
Havoc 3.1 OK, but BT calling not working, so I decide go back to stock.
LGUP used without problem, but then camera neither flash ligh doesnt work anymore.
Last firmware for H870 used from official.
Have someone same shi t experience like me?
Trying everything, but no success.
So its not easy go back to stock again..
(My phone is H870 for EU)

It's a known problem, the A10 ROMs somehow mess with files needed for stock camera that aren't included in stock pie.
You have to flash Oreo bootloader and then 30b zip for the camera to work.
If that doesn't work flash Oreo kdz and update to Pie.

Problem finally solved!
Tried many times flash Oreo bootloader and then 30b(pie), 20a (oreo). With 30b everythings work except camera. With oreo 20a phone wasnt even bootup normally.. (after reset just screen with green android and message "No commands" appear. I used LG UP 1.14 with Uppercut.
Then after many unsuccesses I put phone to state where bootloop appeared and I thought about to throw it into garbage.
ADB shell and TWRP saved me... I was again able flash roms.
At the end I found some package with LG UP 1.14 and patch (so I could use it without Uppercut...there is a new LGUP_common DLL), and with this combination flash procedure worked smoothly.
BUT! I had to load nougat stock rom first (H87011i_00_OPEN_EU_OP_0108.kdz), which fix partitions in phone somehow (but there wasnt possibility upgrade higher). Everything, camera included was working with this rom..
Then I flash oreo stock rom (H87020a_00_OPEN_EU_OP_0423.kdz), and now It booted right (no "no command" during startup). Phone worked perfectly, and I used OTA upgrade to land on 30b pie last official update.. tadaaa
Hope it will help others with same problem..

Can you elaborate on what didn't work?
The thread about factory images of OB 3 contains all the stock image of OB3, in fact, it even restores more files than the one provided on essential website.
It should be the way to go because the script has also been edited so that it restores both partition A and B, making the bootloader locking process more safe
Take any version you wish https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/development/stock-7-1-1-nmj20d-t3701681
but make sure you take full dumps.
By the way, flash-all.bat is for Windows, flash-all.sh is for Mac and Linux

But the b35 is impossible to get back?
The edl method allow you to get back to B32 with everything from stock, such as gpt, recovery, modem, boot, system.
I have not tried to update from B32 to B35, but you may able to do it by OTA update.
There are other ways to flash it to B35, but you may need custom recovery such as twrp.

Lol. I spent all weekend trying to figure out how to get back to B35 locked. Decided that maybe I was happy with the unofficial Oreo builds after all.
Since there are no more otas, flashing stock and locking the bl is only hurting the new owner who will have to go through all that again if they want updates.
Pretty sure there is a modded b35 stack around here somewhere... maybe nFound's thread.
I bet the b32 stack also works just fine on b35 but no promises.

Try using B03 from ztedevices.com it's for the G variation, but if you install B20 OR B35 afterwards you will get all your functions back, I was stuck with no phone functions with my U model on stock B01 ROM. Rather than use edl or tulip tool or Axon 7 toolkit just flash B03 in standard recovery mode then flash B20 both from SD Card, trust me it works for the U even though B03 is intended for the G, my U on the B01 ROM was identifing itself as a G and I had no phone functions at all, I used this method as I don't have access to a PC just Mac so I had to rely on SD Card updates to get it going, try this method. I had B35 when I bought it, I must admit it's a good build especially with the Hiys call blocker as a system app. Use SD Card upgrades and then you can sell it and upgrade to the Axon 10 pro
