Do Full Stock files modify bootstack? - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Question: If I install a full stock zip, does it overwrite:
Boot stack? <- Yes if from stock recovery / ? if from TWRP
Fastboot? <- Yes if from stock recovery / No if from TWRP
Recovery? <- Yes if from stock recovery / Yes if from TWRP
I've flashed a full stock zip and fastboot. just want to make sure I don't need to also flash stock bootstack for RMA purposes.

If you want to RMA your phone, flash an official zip through the official recovery. Those overwrite the bootstack, the recovery and the bootloader. Or use MiFlash. But I wouldn't risk locking the bootloader with not everything fully stock...
After flashing the official zip use axon7toolkit to relock.

I followed this process and I locked my phone.

I'll download the latest Official Zip form ZTE and flash it officially just to make sure.

Thanks

I have been able to download OTAs and update this way.
But when I try to flash a Stock update.zip either from SD card or internal storage it gives me an error about not being able to mount the SD card.
Will the OTA updates also overwrite to boot stack?

The phone downloaded the OTA for B19 and was able to run the update. How does ZTE check for a phone having been modified? Are there some steps or commands that can be run to check before sending it in? Should I just reflash the B19 full stock from Miflash to be sure everything is back to stock?

We don't really know if they check it at all. Someone said he sent it unlocked and they disn't even notice.
Just be sure that the 5 second screen doesn't show up when you turn it on. Should be enough

[Guide] Flash OTAs with TWRP (OS 2.1.3/ 005)

Firstly, you cannot install OTA's with TWRP. You'll have to get back to stock recovery in order to install patches.
Thanks to @eng.stk, with the recovery compiled from source, we now can flash OTA Zips from TWRP.
Download TWRP 2.8.7.0: http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=15364
Download the following OTA's and move them to internal/external storage and proceed to install them from TWRP.

It's most likely that you tampered the system and recovery partition. I uploaded the stock recovery here, flash the stock recovery, then flash to system dump, then this patch.
Well, i did a nandroid backup before getting rooted, i tried to restore my phone so i could properly do the ota, but now there is no OS installed
But my computer still detect my phone, where can i download the full rom please ?

By flashing the system dump I meant, install this zip package http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-x/general/ota003all20151024193-oxygenos-ota-dump-t3244996. This zip package is stock system dump bearing version 03. Then flash to 03-04 patch.
is this OTA solved the problem with microsd cards?
Can anybody help with a generic error trying to flash the stock recovery again?
No reason why just says failed. I am rooted with TWRP and trying to revert to stock to be able to OTA. Last android was a nexus 4 and been away a little while so I may be missing something.. I don't want to have to wipe all my data and such can somebody assist and refresh my understanding?
Dizzyrul3z: No, microSD card issue remains according to official forum--next OTA I bet.
I'm rooted, TWRP also errored when I attempted the OTA installed.
So to clarify, using TWRP I want to install three zips: stock rom, OTA03 (system dump), and OTA04 (update), wipe cache/dalvik. Correct?
Question: I install them all at once in TWRP, right? Will any of this erase my apps/data?
Thanks,

You need to flash to Stock recovery as well. I'll be updating the OP.
So this update is newer than the one mentioned here right ? : https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/oxygenos-2-1-2-will-start-roll-out-to-oneplus-x-today.402637/

Instructions:
1. Switch to Stock Recovery if you're running TWRP. But how to do it? Restore this backup from TWRP.
2. Flash the system dump available at this thread.
3. Now flash this update/patch.
4. Then fastboot flash TWRP recovery if you only need it.
Just my 2 cents, boot TWRP instead of flashing it. I personally suggest.
Code:
fastboot boot twrp_directory_of_your_pc.img
PSA: You'll need Stock recovery to patch official updates.
PS: My Memory Card is working exceptionally fine. I am using a Samsung EVO+ 32GB.

Can't Update Axon 7 (USA Version)...Stuck on B20

Hello,
Wondering if anyone can offer some advice. Just got an Axon 7. Was on B27...HiFi settings had a weird buzzing sound when set to "super". Thought maybe I should see if there was an update, but phone just said "Please check your network connection". My wifi was working fine and tried factory resetting multiple times. Finally I downloaded the update.zip off the ZTE USA site that was for B20....thought maybe I could downgrade to B20 and then update to B29, but no luck. Now I am stuck on B20 and still getting the "Please check your network connection". Can do anything data/wifi needed except update. Any thoughts? Phone is non-rooted....haven't even had it long enough to think about it or have time yet.

You can also sideload the OTAs. Put these on your microSD card.
B27 OTA: https://dl1.ztems.com/zxmdmp/downlo...ZTE A2017U/81526/update_P996A01_B20_to_B27.up
B29 OTA: https://dl1.ztems.com/zxmdmp/downlo...ZTE A2017U/82082/update_P996A01_B27_to_B29.up
After you put them on your microSD card, they might show up in the System Update menu, I'm not sure.
If they don't, you can flash them via stock recovery. Rename them to "update1.zip" and "update2.zip" or whatever, boot into stock recovery, flash the first one, reboot into the device to make sure it flashed fine, reboot into stock recovery, flash the second one, reboot and you should be on B29.

Thanks. I forgot to unzip the file and put it in the root of sd card and I have done what you said too. It is running installation now.
I'm failing now? I went from ZAD v.3 back to stock B29 (I have an unlocked bootloader). I do have the MiFavor recovery (not TWRP)
I got the notification there was an upgrade, it took 6 hours to download... but the update "failed". I tried applying the update via SD card, but I get about 32% in and says "Update failed"......It also lists "Status 8" and "system partition has unexpected contents".
Sounds like y'all are having a hell of a time between the slow OTA speeds and then getting it to actually flash.
So I think I'll hold off for now. Hopefully we can get some TWRP-flashable zips soon enough... I think DrakenFX is already busy with all that
You guys are making this way too complicated.
The full B29 firmware will flash just fine with twrp.
Only OTA *updates* require the stock recovery. The difference is the update patches existing files while the full firmware contains full partition images.
Be aware if you download the full b29 firmware from zte, it will also replace your recovery and bootloader. You won't be able to flash recovery from the bootloader/fastboot screen then. Also, it wipes all your data.
DrakenFX put out a modified version of the full firmware file which doesn't modify the bootloader. I believe it also leaves the recovery intact.
After flashing official A2017U B29 firmware from ZTE the signal network service is lost. I ignore this and continue to upgrade to Nougat successfully and I get lost signal. I notice that Dual Sim Setting is working. Does official firmware overwrite original chinese baseband/bootstack? Can someone please upload chinese baseband/bootstack A2017 please?

No more complicated than it's turned out to be....
I followed DrakenFX's guide to B29 stock... The Nougat OTA downloaded, in 6 hours, but failed. So, I tried the SD card method, and it also failed at 32%.
Not sure what else I can do? Just wait for DrakenFX to make ZAD v.4 is my plan for now since I already wasted about 11 hours trying to upgrade today, and another 3 restoring back 6.0.1 and all my apps.

No problem upgrading using the OTA on an sdcard here. Flashed the draken stock_system zip, then fastboot flashed the B29 stock recovery. Reboot to recovery (which is now stock) and update from sd card. If you've messed with other partitions, you may need to flash more B29 .img's.

How to update firmware if you've already flashed TWRP

I figured out how to update after flashing twrp. Maybe obvious to some but I've seen questions about it.
The zip in the "Convert CA to WW" thread has the stock rom in a zip file. Open it and inside is a recovery.img file in it, extract it to your adb folder on your PC.
Download the firmware update from ASUS official site and save to the root of your sd card or internal storage (it will recognize both.)
Reboot into fastboot on your device.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
When that finishes reboot and your phone should find the update and ask if you want to install. Do so. You may need to power cycle first.
When you're done you can reflash TWRP.
Once you have TWRP you can flash Magisk or SuperSU as you see fit.
It's painless.
An old post from you, but thank you. This was really easy. I've spent 2 days trying to figure out how to upgrade without restore stock rom, boot etc. and lose all data. I was about to give up when I saw this post, I didn't expect it to work - to easy. But I could give it a try.
This was painless.
Then it took me 3 hours to figure out how to reinstall twrp again, it wasn't just to flash and reboot I had to boot directly into recovery after flash. But that is another story.
Thanks, you just saved me some time!

When you flash stock recovery and update you unroot, so you will get FOTA. Just update to Oreo and then flash twrp and Magisk (or whatever you use) again.
I am rooted and updated to Oreo then chose updates involving battery improvement and/or system stability (downloaded to external sd), after installed the last update I flashed twrp and rooted again.
You need to flash stock recovery before update. The phone will find the updated with custom recovery but update will fail.
The site I downloaded stock recovery from is down so you have to search for it, or download RAW stock rom and extract the recovery from it

Stuck in TWRP after pushed upgrade 28s

This morning I my phone pesented itself in TWRP.
Maybe this is because over the past days I repeatedly got notifications that a system upgrade wanted to install itself (I have a modified 26s X720 from Tora33).
I rejected those notifications.
Now I am stuck in TWRP and I cannot get around it. What I tried:
Reinstalling previous firmware (Tora33 26s) still on the phone
Restoring a TWRP backup from 6 months ago (TWRP didn't see it, maybe it's from a previous TWRP version, I now have v. 3.1)
Flash via fastbood factory image using Mauro's Tool All In One (error message "can't find file mke2fs.conf")
Wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, system; then install Mauro_V2.2 cleansed 23s firmware which I transferred to the phone
Every time it boots up in TWRP.

Oh boy. Thanks anyway. OTA flashed itself, couldn't stop it. Maybe I made it worse by trying to fix.
The bootloader is not locked according to the AIO tool. I can flash succesfully any firmware, only after flashing the phone will still boot in TWRP. It is strange it still boots in TWRP. Is there no simpler trick like flashing the standard recovery and then flashing OFW?
You mention Ofil; do you think the guide described here work?

Yes, that QFIL guide is for the x720.
In my opinion, the best way to return stock is to push update.zip into phones main folder, then install stock recovery, then in this one install update zip then check that OS is working. If it is, then go into twrp and wipe. Can't do it?
I'll mention myself;

If he was just going back stock that would work he flash 28s ota with twrp so this will not work.

No brick after OFW push 28s
The pushed (unvoluntary) update didn't brick my phone after all. This may be important for those that have modified stock ROMs with TWRP.
Not being able to restore OFW was a bug in Mauro's All-in-One tool which he fixed last night. After I could easily flash 20S or 26S stock from his repository. I would also recommend this as safest/easiest procedure. Afterwards you can just flash TWRP from the same tool and move from there.
By the way, immediately after flashing 20s the FW notified it wanted to update itself, again!
