Fire HD 8 battery dying fast - Prime Photos the culprit? - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Fire HD8 is dying when I'm not using it. For example, at 80% charge last night I went to sleep with the smart cover closed on the Fire and it was at 40% by morning (~5%/hr). For a few weeks now it's been dying, from full charge, within a day, without me using it. It also freezes a lot upon waking so I have to power cycle it before it's useable, which has made diagnosing what kills the battery somewhat hard.
However, I installed GSam Battery Monitor and what I've learned is that even when the smart cover is closed, most of the battery drain is due to the device being "held awake." And the "App sucker" shows Prime Photos as having used most of the power. For example, 18% out of 44% since my last full charge. The thing is I don't use Prime Photos, at all, for anything. I have no photos on the device. I've maybe used the camera once or twice. So it's not from active usage.
But Prime Photos can't be removed. I can't disable it. And I can't seem to figure out a way to stop the power drain. I've power-cycled dozens of times (not to mention the nearly daily 100% battery drain). I've cleared the cache and forced stop on Prime Photos a few times. And I'm at a total loss now as I can't seem to find anyone who is experiencing the same or even a similar issue with a Google search.
I'm current only OS 5.6. And I have added Google Play Store apps via APKs. The only option I see is a factory reset although I'd rather not do that if possible. Anyone have any suggestions about what to try? I know there's some work-arounds to remove pre-installed apps (although maybe more challenging on the latest OS). Is that the best route? Is there a better option? Or could Prime Photos be a red herring?

A few more updates:
I noticed that Prime Video was also sometime showing high usage (as had Prime Photos). So I decided maybe it was an ad locking up and holding the device awake. Based on tips I read here I contacted Amazon support to mention maybe that the ads were causing the problem and they immediately removed the ads for me. So that was nice, and my Fire immediately seemed more responsive and faster to wake.
BUT - the problem is not resolved. My Fire continues to freeze (often) with an unresponsive black screen (it's backlit, so it's on, it's just displaying black). The battery died 50% overnight while I slept. So I'm still basically facing the same problem.
Possibly unrelated is that Kindle Books seems to be re-setting to default settings often (shows the intro/new features screen as if the app was just installed/updated). This might be completely unrelated. Or maybe it's all of the Amazon apps that are causing issues.

And, I periodically get an error message telling me the SD card has been ejected (which it has not). I believe there is a software issue with the SD card that is the culprit and is preventing the Fire tablet from sleeping - therefore the drain and performance issues. Anybody out there concur?

I am having the exact same symptoms with my Fire HD 8 running Fire OS 5.6.0.0. I got it in early October and it ran fine until the recent update. It runs great with no SD card installed. As soon as I mount my 32 GB Samsung Evo card, I get battery drain while sleeping and erroneous SD card eject messages. I also get intermittent sluggish performance. I have nothing on the card, just mounting it causes problems. I have tried erasing and remounting but still problems. As soon as I remove the card, all is well. I tried an old 2 GB Samsung card I had lying around. It worked fine with that card. I too have installed the Google Play Store and associated APKs but I don't think that is part of the issue. Perhaps there is an issue with larger SD cards.

Then at first boot with SD card I usually format it in device to avoid those problems so maybe there is an issue. Play store it self is a battery hog in my opinion. I would deactivate automatic app update in play store settings as this can conflict in with apps from Amazon app store.
Also reboot now and then is a good option.

I have turned off automatic updates in both the play store and the Amazon app store. The issue appears whenever I mount the SD card. I have tried hot mounting, formatting in the device, external formatting, etc. It seems to be related to certain type(s) of cards. It does not occur with my old small 2 GB card but occurs every time with my new 32 GB card.

Where did you get your SD card. Some sources sell them dead cheap but they might be capacity hacked cards. I had one of those back in a day saying that it was a 128GB. But it was really 4GB after I used low formatting- which takes some time. Try repartition your SD card. See if that issue still appears. Usually there is a bit space left unpartitioned when they are new. I would try that and see if that works.
Also Amazon might be to blame as if you choose to use it to store all your content on sdcard it usually takes up some space with on deck content without you knowing it.
Also check in file manager on your SD card if you have folder called Android. Try to delete it and see if it asks you for special permission to access sdcard. Some apps require that and maybe this is a cause.

Thanks for your suggestions. I bought my card through Amazon Prime. I borrowed a neighbor's 32 GB SandDisk HC I card. It ran fine with no memory drain or other issues. I deleted the partition on my Samsung drive and did a low level reformat. I mounted on my Fire HD 8 and memory drain occurred again. Battery level went down 7% in one hour while sleeping. It is definitely specific card related. If you are still reading this, would DyslexicPBJ post the make and model of your card? Thanks.

I took a 64 GB SanDisk card out of a Dell Windows Tablet I have. It works just fine in the HD 8. After 2 hours no memory drain. I don't know if I have a bad card or if the HD 8 just does not like Samsung 32 GB Evo cards. I put the Samsung card into my Dell and it appears to be working fine.

Not the same, but similar. I have had no problem with 3 different SanDisk cards. Maybe the Fires just don' t like Samsung.

Well, it's confirmed. I unmounted my SD card and the problem is immediately fixed (I forgot how long the battery lasts. Over a day and a half of occasional usage and it's only dropped 20% and hasn't frozen a single time).
Is it possible to submit this as a bug report to Amazon? My girlfriend has the same SD card and is having the exact same problems, which further confirms it's the SD card at fault since my tablet has ads disabled and Google Play services, while hers still has ads and has never had Google Play installed.
I went ahead and bought the 32GB (more than enough size, for me, I think) that they recommend at http://amazon.com/firetabletstorage. Feels a little like they've duped me since I've now spent about as much on SD cards as I did on the tablet itself. But there's simply not enough storage on the device to go without any sort of backup memory and this card doesn't seem to be causing problems for people.

I replaced my Samsung 64 GB card with a SanDisk 64 GB card and all is well. It is the card that Amazon recommends. Weird that the Fire does not seem to like the Samsung cards.

Just to chime in, I've had a similar issue with the battery draining super fast as soon as I installed the SD Card in the tablet. I also had the tablet running very hot and draining the battery down to 2% in my bad, which was kind of dangerous. I also randomly had messages telling me that the card was not properly removed, or simply the storage settings freezing and not recognizing the card.
My SD card is an UHS-3 Samsung Evo 64GB.
I installed BetterBatteryStats (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 + https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67819528&postcount=4 to grant permission through ADB) on the tablet to check what was causing the battery drain.
This is what it looks like with the Samsung SD card (did not matter if it was unmounted or not, as long as the card was physically seated in the slot, it would cause drain):

Unfortunately, the only solution I know of is to find another use for your Samsung card and buy one of the recommended SanDisk cards for you Fire.

I can confirm that this issues fixed in 5.6.0.1 at Jan 23th.

My HD 10 has recently begun doing the same thing. The only connection I can see to the posts above is that I recently transferred a few dozen ebooks from my computer to the 64gb Sandisk card via the notebook after the Humble Bundle app kept crashing. I'm now charging with the SD card removed and will remove Humble Bundle when I'm up to a full charge to see if there's any difference.

I came to inquire as to this exact issue. I have a 128 Gig Samsung EVO which when installed drains my battery from 100% to 20% in under 36 hours. Without the memory card installed, it drops about 4% every 12 hours instead. Guess I'll be buying a SanDisk 128 Gig instead. Thanks for the advice from all who posted about this already.

Oops! You have reached the storage limit... Question?!

Alright, i got my Focus about a week ago. I've been through two storage cards so far, the first being an 8gb sandisk class 2 card, and when i got up to 12Gigabits, everytime i tried to go into the marketplace I would get an "Oops! You've reached the storage capacity of your phone! Please delete some data and try again." So i deleted all my music off the phone and tried again. No luck. If i turn off the phone, take out the battery, and turn it back on I maybe able to install 1 app before the message pops up again.
So.... I figure maybe it was because it was a class 2 card. So now i'm using a Sandisk class 4 16gig card and this time i synched everything (music and pictures, since i can no longer synch office files even though it's a windows phone (which will take some getting used to after having my HTC Pure and being able to put whatever i wanted on ) and got it up to 12Gigs used. Then i started reinstalling my marketplace apps, which worked up until i got to 17Gigs and the error message started again.
Next, i reformatted the phone (again) and decided to try to get whatever i wanted from the marketplace first, since that's the only time i ever seem to have a problem. 6Gigs in, i get the same error message again. I'm about to throw this phone through the window. I have no problem saving pictures, making office documents, or synching music and pictures, just no marketplace functionality.
Samsung says that the phone has shared memory, and that if I try to install more than one app at a time then it will give that error message. No matter how many times i reiterated that i've installed the apps one at a time, waiting until they were installed before doing anything else, he kept saying that was the problem.
Anyone else had this problem or is it just the particular phone that i got? I don't want to go swap it out for another one and go through all this crap again if i can just take it back and swap it for something else since i still have 22 days before the initial 30 day period is up. I figured maybe it was something to do with the marketplace itself, and perhaps it would be fixed in the february update from microsoft, but that would put me past the 30 day return time.
Any suggestions??

the first time it sounds like you filled your card. I realize you say you have 16GB and only filled 12GB the first time. the zune software also shows how much space is reserved for user generated content (pictures,, etc.)
As far as your second go round, I'd say you just got a bum microSD.
The WP7 logo cards should go on sale soon.

I wouldn't say it was a bum card... I used 6 gigs of a 16G card on the marketplace first, and that's when the error occured, but only in marketplace. Since then, i've added 8 gigs of music and pictures through Zune, which correctly shows the total storage of 22Gigs with 8gigs remaining. The reserved space is set at 1%. The only time the error pops up is with the Marketplace.
I'll try the "new" windows 7 cards, but we'll see. And yes, the SD card i used was listed as working from the list on the forum, that's why i made a thread to see if anyone else was having the issue.
Possible solution:
Wipe out the phone by reformatting the whole thing, then create a new windows ID so Zune and the marketplace think it is a different account?

I see that you have a Focus too with a 16G card in it... is it class 2 or 4? I heard the higher class cards don't work as well as the lower class cards due to the way the higher class cards are tinkered with. How much space do you have left on yours and have you not had the message?

I think your phone's just borked. When I first got my phone I tried 3 cards, and while they all ended up crapping out anyways, I never ended up with the issue you had.

It's a class 4 card. Has works flawlessly since it was installed. It came from Microcenter.
I don't have that much on it. I off load pictures and video after transfer with Zune. I have 15 gb free and no messages like you.

Well hopefully you won't. I didn't first get the message til the storage card space was full, with only 6gigs remaining.
Still running fine after the reformat though. But i now have 17.06 gigs free, so we'll see what happens after i put the rest of my music on it. Takes a few hours longer than it did with the drag and drop on my HTC Pure, so i don't know when i'll have time to do it again.
I still might swap it out on the 28th day from DOP, just to be safe. ;P

First, ive set the reserved space to the lowest possible. I don't have an sd card installed but I get the same error. Zune PC software says I have 200+ MB free but on the phone under the settings it says I've got 700+ mb Free. I was trying to install assassins creedand it gives me the error. I think its bigger than what the PC says I have free though so idk what to believe.
Update: I went on the Zune software and cleared up enough space larger than the game and it allowed me to install. So there is apparently about 500mb of space that my phone either thinks is available and isn't or it just won't let me use that space.

Device: HD2 is currently running YukiXDA's Windows Phone 7 ROM
Storage Device: Sandisk 8GB Class 4 MicroSDHC
Issue: I flashed my phone with Windows 7 after formatting the SD card with SD-Card formater for optimal results. The installation went perfect, the SD card was recognized, etc. and everything was working perfectly. I added pictures and music to it, no problems; however, when I put an additional album onto the HD2, the phone started freezing and rebooting quite frequently, with the occasional Storage card error; thus, I assumed (and read) that adding a little more music would patch up the problem. I tried it and to my surprise, the rebooting decreased, but the problem still persists. I know some of ya'all are probably wondering: "Go buy a new SD card," However, this is one of the cards that is known for being compatible quite frequently; thus, I can't be too sure whether I'm just wasting money or not. Any help would be appreciated.
This might sound hilarious; however, after updating to blackseven mango, my phone has not rebooted for the past 6 hours (It is infamous for rebooting every hour or so). I am going to test this out one more night and see what the problem is. I'm sure it is not related to the roms; however, it would restart with every NoDo Rom, but for some reason, it hasn't with this one.

Its most likely your SD card I personally have never had any problems with restarting and I have the Samsung SD card that came with my us hd2

the adding of music is the key, ive found that my card has portions that are fine, in fact its super quick and stable, but if i go and install something it will start resetting, if its the same issue as mine then keep dumping 50MB of junk on it until it becomes stable, i honestly do not know why this works unless WP7 is so sensitive to IOPS that even the slightest hicup will make it reset

I have had problems with alot of reboots, up till 5 per hour and some times when booting it just get stuck on a white og green screen so that i have to pull the battery. But that was untill i found this yesterday, i filled my phone up(from over 10 gb free to only 2gb free) and now it is running sooooo smooth not a reboot yet
So people with random reboots might noth have to by a new sd card. ???
Wish i found this before i ordered a 16 GB class 10 hehehe
Just a quick report back on this, after filling my sd card up with music i only had ONE reboot last night in stead of rebooting many times per day else it has been running all smoth.
So i must say this is a great result by just adding music to the phone
HTC HD2 with cm7 hyperdroid
Hi my phone randomly reboots a lot ive rooted it and flashed cm7 hyper droid- v10.4 "estatic eagle" android version 2.3.3 build #GRI40 a long time ago but now recently it just started randomly rebooting. i believe it started when i tried to update the rom from rom manager to a newer cm7 hyperdroid but for some odd reason my phone also doesnt reboot into recovery mode to put a new rom on it. please help. its getting irratating. thank you

Galaxy S4 Excessive Battery Drain

I have an international S4 I9505 with 4.3 and OmegaROM v17 and a 64gb sandisk class 10 card formatted to exfat.
I have installed FolderMount to put the large games on the SD card and now I keep getting a message that the SD card was removed and then inserted again.
It also makes the phone hot to the touch, I think it keeps doing that over and over and drains a lot of the battery too.
I had this card in my S3 for 6 months now and never an issue so the card is fine. I have formatted it once placed in the S4 of course.
Is there a fix for this?

Can you please post a photo with the battery usage of your phone and also download if you dont have already a wakelock detector app from play store and post a screenshot of that too.

I believe the excessive drain was due to the fact that the sd card was constantly ejected by the OS. Seems to be a common issue.
So I did another long format and a chkdsk and it seems to have stopped doing that.
Also MediaStorage service was draining a lot, same on my old S3 so I have stopped it.
Since then things seem to have improved.
I'm sure there are way more thing I can turn off from boot that don't do anything useful but not sure which they are.

In a world of hurt after going to adaptive storage

This sucks. I got a 16 GB model some time ago expecting marshmallow and a good microSD card to be the ticket. I have a Sandisk Ultra 128 Gb class 10 card which is well regarded for speed and reliability. I FINALLY got Marshmallow recently and went through the process of getting my card reformatted for adaptive storage. I was surprised during the process that the phone gave me a warning that the card was slow and I may experience problems, but I pressed on.
Everything seemed to work fine after the 'conversion' and the phone seemed snappy enough. Though I hadn't yet installed any new programs in the new configuration. I merely backed up photos and audio media that was being stored on the card, and then restored them to their proper location after the reformat to integrate the card with internal storage.
I then installed some apps I had removed to make space on internal storage previously. Now the phone is totally unusable. I get about 1-3 minutes of usage after boot before it hangs up on a screen, or with the notification shade pulled down. The phone just totaly freezes; I can't even power it down (need to look up how to force it to shut down).
What have I gotten myself into? Why would that card be considered 'slow and/or inadequate' when I purchased it less than 6 months ago and it is rated a good and fast card?
Any suggestions on how to proceed? I need and counted on the combined storage capability (or I never would have gone or the 16 Gb model).

oh, and random reboots and also the screen going blank but the phone not actually being off (battery died really fast) overnight. I'm trying to get into the bootloader and do traditional things like clearing dalvik cache (is that current? I haven't done much rooting and messing around with the guts of Andriod since Kit Kat), etc.
I had to revert too. Limited TWRP support, very slow apps, couldn't connect via USB to the SD storage. I bought the 16GB thinking the same thing. Was a mistake as of now.
Besides not being able to do anything with the card in TWRP, I'm having no problems using adaptive storage, and I too use a 128GB SanDisk Ultra.

I'm not worried about TWRP. I'm actually content with the phone non-rooted if adaptive storage works, since it's not carrier locked and I can do things that previously Verizon wouldn't let me. I'm not interested in mucking around with new ROM's and stuff anymore; too busy with other tinkering projects and i have plenty of other viable devices to do that with (amazon phone and tablet, older android phones, etc.). I want this one to be a stock daily driver; but I want it to f'ing work as indicated.
I just got done doing a factory reset, formatting the SD card as internal and restoring (system tool; is that a Moto thing or Lollipop+?). We'll see how it goes. I may just have mucked it up trying to convert to adaptive storage after having used it with Lollipop AND even moving some apps to the SD card.

Recurring "SD Card encrypted" notification

Does anyone else have an issue with a recurring notification popping up? Android System - SD card encryption - SD card encrypted. I can get it to go away by tapping it, but it comes back an hour or so later (sometimes longer).
I have used this very SD card in my T-Mobile S7 Edge for months (also encrypted) with zero issues until the day I switched to my T-Mobile S8. I've seen many threads out there about this (or similar) SD card notification issues but no definitive answer - some say software issue and some say hardware issue.
if it matters, I encrypted the SD card as soon as I put it into the phone, then applied the latest T-Mobile firmware update (NRD90M.G950USQU1AQD9). Following the advice of other threads, I have since tried decrypting, re-formatting (in the S8), re-encrypting, etc. Same issue. Been able to record 4K clips and 1080P videos on this SD card for almost an hour continuously without issue, so not sure the card is to blame.
I also just installed SD card monitor and can see "EJECT, UNMOUNTED, BAD_REMOVAL, MOUNTED" events occurring over a 3 second period, again and again - about 15 times an hour.
Would appreciate any suggestions!
SD card not supported
I'm getting a similar error. The SD card has been functioning properly for the past 5 days. All of a sudden, I got a notification that the SD card is not supported. In addition, every app that was linked to the SD card vanished! I had to reinstall all of my apps. I would like to know how to fix it. The error keeps on popping up.
I think my problem is the SD card, itself. My computer won't recognize it, either. I just ordered a replacement from Amazon.

Glad you figured it out. Maybe it's the card in my case too, and just coincidence that it stopped working the exact time I put it into my S8. I'll get another SD card to test with.
It is not likely to be the card. If the card is encrypted, your computer will not be able to access it.
I took the SD card out of my S7 and put into my Verizon S8. Seemed to work fine for the past few days even though I was seeing the same SD card encrypted Android system notification. Yesterday I moved a number of apps to the SD card. This morning the phone rebooted itself and instantly all of the apps that I had moved over to the SD card were gone. No greyed out icons, no folder references, nothing. Rebooted into safe mode and I get the same SD card encrypted Android system notification. Android system storage can see the card and reports the 10.55GB that has been used from it.

Have you tried using SD Card Monitor on your S8? I put my SD card back into my S7E and have been running SD Card Monitor - and not seeing any "EJECT, UNMOUNTED, BAD_REMOVAL, MOUNTED" events there (unlike the 15 per hour on my S8), so becoming disheartened that my S8 needs to go back...
I get the exact same thing, but it only happens when the SD card is encrypted. If I decrypt, everything seems fine
Something is wrong with the way Samsung encrypts sd cards... My s7edge my note7 and now this S8... I encrypt because it makes me feel safer... It works perfect about a week or two... Then all of a sudden after a update or a reboot... The phone and no device can read the card and none of my apps or pics and videos can be found and I have to format the card for it to be iseable.. and this is with two different cards. Idk of it's because after an update the encryption key changes or what but it sucks. That this is 3 generations that this issue has been existent
I'm having the same issue with the notification after encrypting. Battery is also draining pretty rapidly while phone is just sitting idle. Using the Samsung 256gb card that came with $99 Gear VR offer. Used card unencrypted for 3 days no issues, then encrypted it and this issue began. Unencrypting as I type. Not worth the aggravation and battery drain.
I got the 256gb Samsung card that came with the immersion bundle. It repeatedly un-mounts with a "bad_removal" multiple times an hour. This happens whether it is encrypted or not. Each time this results in a notification whenever the card is encrypted. I have formatted on the phone, a full format from windows, and a full format with sdformatter tool. In a 24hr period yesterday it did this 70 times. So yea, I cannot use the card for any apps, as it makes them inaccessible until the phone is rebooted. The whole point of the 256gb card with the immersion bundle was so you could install some of the Oculus VR games there due to their large size. My old SanDisk 64gb card I had in my S7 edge and an old 16gb card i had work fine. I called Samsung and had to talk with the e-commerce dept since this was part of a promo. They have no process for replacing a defective card that is part of a promo, so they had to escalate. I am now waiting to hear back.

It's not your card. I bought the SanDisk Micro SD card & installed at the time I upgraded to the Galaxy S8 on Verizon. Of course I want to encrypt my micro SD card when i set up the SD card Now the notification will not go away. I have done everything everyone else has done even checked for updates. NOTHING!!!

I think it is a problem with encryption. I had a lot of issues getting write access to micro sd with serial apps. Problems disappeared disabling encryption. Tested with two different cards.

So you are thinking it's Samsung's encrypt in method on the S8 that is causing every ones problem and there is nothing to do but harrass Samsung for a software update?

Yes, thats what i am waiting for. I unencrypted my micro sd 5 days ago and seems to be ok so far.
Also, read somewhere that encryption + apps moved to micro sd causes a lot of issues in S8.

I never moved any apps to myicro SD card bc it'll cause issues between this app phone and network. The app was not mentioned to be ran off an encrypted external drive. So I get that. Did the SD card actually encrypt correctly? I do not have a PC or another phone to check.

My real concern is if the card actually encrypted properly and the system UI just needs to be updated to not continuously notify myself of the encrypted SD Card

The problem is actually a lot worse than you guys think. It's not just with encryption, initially that is what I thought as well. But, turns out the notifications don't happen when it's not encrypted. What's actually happening is the card is ejecting nonstop every time you get that notification and then remounting itself. This is an ongoing big widespread problem. Download 'SD Card Monitor' from Google Play and you'll soon find out that's exactly what it's doing. Complain here on the Samsung forum about this issue, it is now pages and pages long. Unfortunately I can't drop the link because I'm new here sooo just search samsung forums (samsung.community) yourself and it will be one thats above 15 pages long. To clarify this is happening even when it is not encrypted you just don't know it.

Yepppp. The more I'm looking into this issue though, the more it seems like an unfortunate hardware issue. It's certainly happening on many phones and probably many more, but not all of them. It's not any apps I've installed or anything, so your guess is as good as mine at this point. I've done every test imaginable and I'm coming up empty. Also, if you bother to waste your time calling Samsung they wont do a thing. They will just say to send your phone in and wait up to 14 days to get it back with either a new phone or a fix. If I know anything further I'll be sure to update this forum or you can just go to the Samsung one.
Your amazing! & I completely agree with your findings as I can not find a problem with the apps etc. Last year phones blowing up this year hardware software synergy problems what's next, the iris scanner is going to fry your retinas blind? ??

Who knows! haha I mean it COULD be a firemware/software issue that will be resolves in the coming weeks/months...years LOL. As I recall the s7s had similar problem with the SD card notifications and it was never clearly stated whether it was a hardware or firmware issue. Some carriers just hid the notifications and that was that. Samsung didn't do much of anything about it or acknowledge it in a proper manner. I've done about 20 tests so far and will be doing more eventually just kind of taking a break. It's just a very strange problem because the phones read the info just fine it just doesn't STAY mounted.
