Yet another huawei phone that im sure will never get the next Android update
and support will be non-existent after a couple of months of sales
From engadget...
Huawei's four-inch flagship has appeared at a rigorous FCC screening, and this one comes with several radio band changes since its formal reveal. This new CDMA 800/1700(AWS)/1900 variant, making it through the Commission as the M886, indicates the Honor will be making a showing in the US on Cricket as the Huawei Glory. You can expect to see the Gingerbread-running device come with a 4-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) screen, a 1.4GHz single-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, a sizable 1,900mAh battery, an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front-facing cam.
After having such a long time with a U8800 and no offical updates to 2.3 but continued promises from non-existant huawei tech support, upgrading to the new Samsung Nexus/Galaxy Prime as soon as its out as the specs for it just kick ass on anything else out there,
At least the Samsung will come with the latest OS and im sure the updates will be much quicker than anything huawaitforanupdate... could ever come up with
You bet Samsung or any other manufacturer will provide updates. Just changed to HTC Inc S and received 2 OTA updates in the last few days. Next to come is Sense 3.0

I've heard about that, but at least HTC cares about that and what users think... God knows what happens on the Huawei phones...
that makes me think of the linux-windows analogue..
with linux (huawei?) u r on ur own.. u can make the best of it, and u can also live in hell with it..
with windows (htc? samsung? etc?) u r well taken care of, and can live happily ever and after..
[edit]
btw, did u realise that by buying a htc or samsung phone, u r also contributing to the m$ empire's wealth and health?
anyway, not that many ppl care about that i guess..

I think they promised ICS for Honor (probably like 2.3 was promised for Ideos X5)
Anyone betting on it?
Somewhere was said that Huawei's main focus is on ICS and if they have time they'll do a 2.3 upgrade. Not sure if its true though.

Sure the U8860 Honor will get the update... but the M886 Mercury in America probably wont. Same phone just a cruddier FFC and its CDMA not GSM. Cricket is a "unlimited everything for one low rate" provider and I doubt will care to update it's customers. But you get what you pay for... a $250 phone with service for $55 a month.
I'm buying the phone today and I will go on a killing spree if it breaks with in the first few months. By then I'm sure they will have lowered the price though :-/
I read somewhere that google's force company's to have last android updates on recent models. that means even x5 have to be updated to ICS because its an 2008+ model. and so on.
I don't know much about this, I tried to search for anything about that quickly and came up dry. Recent models will be updated I'm sure, but if your phone is a year old then too bad.
Also, On Google's site it says that old Android versions can be shipped on any device, since it's open srouce, but can not carry the name Android and will not be part of the Market ecosystem.
Baiscally, I think its up to the manufacturer if they want to spend the time to get the new OS updates to work with a phone even though Google tries to make it easy. Low-end models will suffer and get lost in the dust.
Now about carriers pushing updates OTA... I think that will only last about a year to 18 months. Why give you the latest OS when you can come back and spend more on a new phone?
Food for thought: A year ago I bought the Samsung Galaxy-S from T-Mobile, it didn't have the latest Android version. T-Mobile said they weren't planning on pushing the update OTA when it came out. Instead said to use Samsung's Kies which failed miserably. At the time I wasn't the only one who had trouble with the software. So I loaded up a custom ROM with a newer Android OS and a sleek dark look.
Looks like a cool phone. Happy with the x5 for now though.
Guess the moral is you get what you pay for really. Huawei package good hardware into a reasonably nice phone and they sell it cheap, why do we expect updates to next version of Android? You pay an extra couple of hundy for a sammy or htc with the same specs, you can start to expect updates. Buy an Iphone and it is a part of the deal for a generation or 2.
It is the biggest problem with android that there is no central control. Google makes a new version, phone manufacturer has to update everything to support it, carrier has to decide to push it and then customise it and then you have to update it using any of a bunch of methods. It is too messy and nobody has control to make sure phones are good and functional before being shipped out the door.
Also ICS has bumped up the minimum specs so everything down in spec from a nexus s should not expect ICS any time soon if ever.
I love xda for making cheap phones completely usable and awesome with custom firmwares and great devs.
Currently from Huawei official BBS there is no plan to release ICS version to X5. The new model Honor already have the ICS pilot version.

So if the Honor has it, the Mercury should too. Only difference is CDMA and FFC....

the above about min requirements is far from true.. If you have a phone that will run 2.2 or above it WILL RUN ICS Better. The biggest improvements in ics is in how it handles memory and cpu cycles. It all uses a whole new ui called render script. that threads the ui thru the gpu Hardware rendering. This makes ics run even better on older hardware.
This is all over the net check it out. and YOUTUBE as well..
I to am wondering about ICS ON The mercury. Unless we can gind a very good DEV that can port the u8860 rom to the M886 . from gsm to cdma .
Anyway just my opinion. I went from honeycomb to ics on my icionia a500 and its like a new device

Phone looking great, but after many problems in the past with x5, i will never buy huawei again.
Does anyone here own the Huawei Honor? I plan to buy this phone. What are your impressions with it?
---------- Post added at 10:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:26 PM ----------
By the way, what are the differences between Ideos X6 and Honor?
I got the Honor 10 days ago !
For what it is, this phone is great, getting it was a very last minute decision (duty free shop in the Airport), but I'm happy I did.
I was able very easily to put ICS on it and it runs great every thing is better about the phone (except for the camera which is horrible), the ICS room is from HUAWEI and its called Cambodia Demo but it works great including Google play.
I heard they was updating 07/13/12

For those thinking in buy Huawei, make your savings and buy some other brand.
Huawei = ZERO client support updates that makes the phones even worst, so you will be on your hands.
agree with last user.
huawei makes good specs for money... but has the worst development and costumer care I know...
I probably wont buy this brand again, my good impression from x5 capacities exist thanks to DZO, nothing more !

If not, then how good of a chance do we have that someone figured the text and file select feature out because it is very useful.
like what hey did to N2 when N3 arrive... nope... they wont give it to us... but all these great people will figure it out anyway... ^_^
Samsung will give nothing to us...even the new UI interface...we likely to have what we get since Note 3 release...

We will get a new UI with android l
Its hard to say. The OG note was updated with a 'premium suite' when the note 2 was launched which included nearly all the improvements from note 2 (software wise) im sure if we dont receive the newer stuff it can be ported when we get a 4.4.4 base

Samsung won't give any new feature for past models. Even these features will be present in future ROM releases (usually it comes with android upgrade because based on the same source code as newer models), they will be disabled anyway. Today new devices aren't much more powerful than previous, so, in most cases only software features make new models more attractive than previous (my S4 SHV-E330S is almost identical to S5 SM-G900F).
Every manufacturer prefers to sell newer devices and earn money than support the old one for free. So, they need to stimulate purchases as much as possible (in Russia we call it "potrebliadstvo").
Samsung did premium upgrade once in the past for previous model(s) and realized they got no benefits from this and additionally let some potential buyers still keep their current phones (i.e. lost some money). Without strict requirements from Google we wouldn't get even android upgrades.
In short: only 3rd party amateur devs can bring something from new to old devices.

Don't hold your breath...
From my non-rooted AT&T Galaxy Note 5 (N920A)
I'm not holding my breath on seeing N on the note 5 until next year. Even if the Note 7 gets it (i heard a rumor Samsung was talking smack about an N update for it in the first 3 months) i don't know we can count on anything faster than historically demonstrated when it comes to any device NOT the current flagship...

If you know the history of Samsung, you shouldn't expect anything this year.
Samsung sells the most phones out of any other manufacturer in the US, and somehow is the WORST WHEN it comes to updates. If there's no unlocked bootloader for the note 7 by the time the LG V20 is released, I'll be jumping ship to LG (and getting the nexus 6p or 2016 nexus as my side chick) LG' s are the only ones with a camera close to as good as Samsung's. And they all have unlockable bootloaders. If Samsung didn't start locking down their bootloaders I wouldn't mind the unexcusably horrendous wait times for software updates. They have a superior product for the most part. But they hardly give a craps about the customer. Just my opinion.

HAHA, I am sorry but, I must have a read a post like yours everytime a new Galaxy Device is released. I personally am patiently waiting for the update. I like the Note 5. I got mine alittle late in the game since they didnt release it in Europe. I would get the note 7 but, that curve screen is a no go for me. I have the S7 and trying to get a good screen protector for its slightly curved screen is hard to come by.
Anyways, I still think Samsung Flagship are the best among all smartphones and will continue to use their device.

I agree with your view, but Samsung might argue it that they care MORE for their customers and thus have locked the devices - to save the ignorant public from themselves- since most folks only know enough to come here, create a new login (since they forgot the old one made since the last device they rooted [or bricked]), then search for rooting instructions until they find something layman enough to follow, and finally root (or brick) their device smh lol i don't agree with that view but i can sooooooo hear some Samsung PR pencil pusher explaining it smh

I agree. But at the same time, they could just go the HTC route. You request unlock keys from Samsung and agree to certain terms and conditions for the unlock. I'd gladly give up Samsung pay and Android pay for root. This dictatorship bull crap is ridiculous. Smh lol
So i receive many questions about this via PM and other topics as i have a good contact with ZTE so i thought I'd create one where you guys can post your comments.
Ive raised this topic to them and they are discussing it. I will keep this main post updated with what i hear.
Update 05/01/17
Official Bootloader Unlock is coming. It was delayed through there not being a great process to release it and the various updates the ZTE have provided to fix bugs. I am still on a root version of b03 and there is a stock b09 version currently. However, the root version i was given is great and works flawlessly. Ive been promised that another root release is coming very soon and will become official.
Potential EU Bootloader Unlock - Needs testers! Thanks @DrakenFX:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165
Why did USA get a bootloader unlock?
> The phone has been released to the open market there and under USA law they can remove the warranty if a bootloader is requested. From what i have read/understand in EU they have to commit to their warranty no matter what.
> It was all decided hastily internally within the USA team without contacting the worldwide team, neither had a clue of what each other was doing, but due to my efforts it looks like they are communicating.
> ZTE promise they dont want to discriminate.
What is happening with the EU?
It is coming. You wont lose warranty.

Even doesn't do anything on his own when enable, is needed when official bootloader unlock arrive.
thought a fastboot oem unlock would suffice, but didn't try it yet.
But that they kept that option there is just pure torture
What ZTE should realize regarding the bootloader unlock is that they have 2 options to build trust with the customers, especially considering last year's Axon has not received Marshmallow and will not receive Marshmallow (at some point customer service said it would, which makes the whole thing even worse).
Either let people unlock the bootloader and provide long term software support through the dev community or promise updates for at least 2 years. Buying what is essentially a flagship device (and *the* flagship of ZTE) and then possibly not receiving anything beyond Nougat (which I expect them to deliver at the very least because of Daydream) would be a huge letdown. I can accept that with <200€ phones, whose hardware probably doesn't really hold up anyways after 2 years, but I expect more from a 400€ phone that is the top of the line from that brand. This holds true especially considering that the other two big competitors in the same price range (the OP3 and the Honor 8) do provide at least one of those assurances. So far, the Axon 7 does not and that's worrisome given both some of the flaws in the current software (notification bell, video playback issues etc) and their own history with last year's Axon.
Bad news but it is starting to look unlikely in Europe that we will get a bootloader unlock. They will try to give us an official confirmation via social media soon.

Oh well, they better rethink this or OP3 it is. Been on the edge the whole time. But wanted to give it a go due to the cool hardware. I can still cancel that order on the Axon and will probably do that as soon as this get official.
Please help me.
We have the US version with the 20B update from which you can unlock your boot loader with the 20B_boot update.
One guy has flashed the b02 version for the Europe devices on his A2017U US phone. Correct?
Can't we flash the 20B version to our Europe A2017G phones and unlock them with the 20b_boot version?
Can't we check which files and how the boot update changed the boot loader and do it some way manually on our phones?

Not really -- the OTAs are block level patches, not file patches. Someone would have to dump and compare the partitions before and after. The system image would probably be easy, fastboot is provided as a full image, but for the other images (boot and recovery), you'd have to dive into the assembly and/or tear apart the kernel.
I'm actually kinda glad they decided to **** europe over with the bootloader. I was on the fence whether to buy the P8 Plus or wait for the Axon 7.
Now I don't have to worry about this anymore, ZTE made the decision so much easier
The P8 has the better battery and camera anyhow. Cheers to everybody

The Axon 7 has better screen and sound anyhow which matters to me. Pretty solid phone for the price even without an unlocked bootloader. Theres already root so cant really complain, what do you expect for a £360 phone!
They didnt really **** europe with the bootloader, it was never guaranteed or announced. But glad your decision is made easier.

All valid points. But no unlocked bootloader = no custom roms = no buy, simple as that.
Especially with a company with a bad or at very least doubtful reputation to provide software updates for a reasonably long/adequate period.
But as you say, that's my choice. And from what I can tell many others will make the same choice. Owning an Android is all about freedom of choice and customization, especially for people her on XDA (obviously). I do like the phone but I don't necessarily like the software on it, or at least not all of it.
I would go for the One+ 3, but no SD card slot = no buy.
I have owned enough android phones to know what I consider essential features and I buy my phones accordingly.
And I actually consider a 1440p screen on a phone a slight negative due to increased power consumption while I gain nothing with higher pixel density (not interested in using mobile VR).
Sound is better, true, but I listen exclusively with headphones so nice speakers are a bonus. My Bluetooth speaker still has better sound

I think 1080p is an absolutely fine resolution for 5.5", but 1080p PenTile? Eh. Not quite hitting the mark for me.
Hi guys i just want to start a discussion.
Just an easy question what would be your biggest reason to leave samsung?
I love the samsungs design of the phones but that isnt my reason te leave samsung my biggest reason is the update policy it just sucks.
And if you would ask me what phone i want to buy its the first NOKIA P1 that will come out this year. I hope it will look like this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVkLj0xBLIk
Updates
Update policy, like anyone else.
The only thing remotely which would make me move away or not consider a Samsung device is if they release another exynos only device.
in the current time i won't be leaving samsung, the only reason to leave them is if they release a device with small battery, bad camera, bad screen, build quality.....these are really hard to happen ( battery?!)....the updates make me angry but still....sacrificing best screen, camera, build, beauty just for the updates isn't a reason. also, look at HTC, they started rolling 7.0 to the M9 then stopped, there is a lot of problems, LG isn't moving anywhere, nexus has bugs because they get the updates before fixing them....that's why i prefer to have a "late" perfect update than a "early" buggy update
Still dont know what is up with samsung dont they see everybody is hating their update policy why the hell they dont do somthing about that thats the big question to samsung.
And what very weird is that they release an update for the older devices like Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and Galaxy S5 security patch of januari and we are still stuck on the older patch just cant understand what are doing in that building do they even talk to each other?
I'm very curious what they will do with the update i hope its not a simple update with Nougat with the interface of MM and nothing more like they did with the s5 they have MM but with the lollipop interface -.-

Come on man, apart from Google and nexus phones, maybe one plus, no other manufacturer will give upto date and regular updates. I'd rather have samsung take their time and do the update right, rather than rush it and have a tonne of bugs an then there will be even more complaints. In the past month many manufacturers had to recall their nougat update because there was bugs.

well i hope their is no bugs at the moment for 7.0 atleast for now otherwise its gonna take samsung another half year to release it :silly:
The biggest issue IMO is lack of international support. I purchased an S7 (all legit) while in Dubai, and had an issue with the screen (AMOLED burn in). Canadian Samsung refused to acknowledge the product because of said lack of int'l warranty. When I contacted Dubai, they said the model was made in Africa, so I would have to travel to South Africa (only Africa Samsung warranty location) to get my device serviced. I usually buy my phones second hand, when the price plummets and the 12 month warranty has expired, which is why I regret my S7 purchase. Oh well, Samsung has lost my business.
When I was buying phone bother me knox counter and lack of warranty after root. But there are many cases that warranty is approved in EU even after root.
I dont have really other complains, it's first time that I dont want to change phone after first year of use because everything works perfectly, especially with xtrastolite ROM.
Excellent display, camera, build quality, SoC, even battery is enough good for me.
Update policy is same for most companies, Samsung is not exception, also I dont expect some major changes and features in nougat.
