S8 Pin unlock lag - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

So this has been an issue since I first got it. It's not a huge issue as I use iris scanner and fingerprint unlock, but when those fail (mostly fingerprint) and I'm forced to enter the pin it lags a lot... I mean I have to slowly enter my pin or it won't enter all the numbers... My pin has 4 digits but most of the time I enter it it only show 3 digits entered. I type the pin on my Honor 8 at the same speed and it never happens.
Anyone with the same issue? Any solution?

How to disable required password on bootup

Ok so if your phone reboots or crashes, you will need to enter a password or pattern in order for the phone to work. Even alarms and everything won't work until you enter the password. That's pretty bad especially if you NEED an alarm
Some people mentioned turning it on and off and it would give you a prompt to disable it.
But for us rooted people, it doesn't give us that option. And our data is unencrypted right?
Is there a workaround if I install a custom rom?
The phone is only unencrypted if you unencrypted it. I didn't decrypt when I rooted, and a few days later TWRP was made to support the 6p without decrypting. I don't know about alarms not working when locked, mine works fine every morning and I usually after to enter my PIN or scan my finger when I tap on a notification. I was using Smart Lock with my Pebble Time, but even that still requires a PIN again after 4 hours (I'm not using it for Smart Lock anymore because the fingerprint scanner is so convenient).
If you're referring to the "please enter PIN to continue booting" part, go to security settings when tap your method (mine is PIN) and I am asked if I want to require a PIN to start the device. This will require you to put in your PIN while Android is booting up and won't proceed unless the PIN is entered. THIS would cause you to lose all ability to use the phone such as alarms or emergency calls. I would toggle this OFF ("no thanks"), and it will still require an actual PIN (fingerprint won't work) for the first unlock after a reboot.

I believe the OP is talking about how it requires pin on the initial lock screen after booting up. Not even finger print or any smart locks will bypass, you have to enter the pin. As far as I know, the phone is functional at this point, so alarms and calls/text etc should come through.

Correct, as I stated in the last sentence of my post. My phone is completely usable in this state. I can read and dismiss notifications, but if I tap on one to launch that app, I have to unlock with PIN. Imprint won't work. I have a Tasker profile to launch Spotify when I plug in my headphones at work and it runs just fine after a reboot and before I've unlocked.

Fingerprint, patterns/pin and Smart Lock.

My device has some strange reactions when using fingerprints on both Stock and Cyanogen:
Configuration:
Ask for pin at startup is disabled
Smart Lock is enabled (by places and bluetooth trusted devices)
Tried with Smart Lock's body detection enabled and disabled, but I get the same result
The main problem is that many times (not all times, it's randomly) when I use finger print to unlock, it also asks for pin/pattern (seems like fingerprint is not enough for my device...) even when I'm at a "trusted place" or connected to a trusted bluetooth device.
Also, the device asks for pin at boot (this option is disabled).
Based on some tests, it's not caused by "failed fingerprint reads", and it happens randomly on Stock and Cyanogen.
It's very annoying to have to use fingerprint AND pin/pattern. It never happened on other fingerprint enabled device.
Any suggestions?
PIN at boot and first unlock after boot are not the same. PIN at boot prevents Android from starting. First unlock after boot will always require a PIN.
If you use your fingerprint all the time, it will prompt for a PIN every 48 hours.

I'll take a look at that.
For me, it randomly asks for pin after fingerprint, approx. 30-40% of unlocks, in the same day and without reboots.

Lockscreen security problem

Hi everyone,
I am having an issue with my S7 Edge because of the unlock pattern.
Normally, I always use my fingerprints for phone unlock, but as you know, additional to that you always need to input some pattern lock also for security reasons.
The problem now is that I forgot the pattern, I can still unlock my phone via fingerprint, but I can not change the lockscreen settings because it asks me for the pattern. I inputted it already 2 times wrong, first time I had to wait 5 minutes, second time 10 minutes in order to be able to unlock at all.
Now I am afraid to try anymore because it will lock my phone for longer....
Is there a way of disabling the pattern in a situation like this? (without having to do a factory reset via recovery)
P.S. It is a rooted phone

Can G5 plus Fingerprint unlock without pw/pin/pattern lock?

Generally, I've never used a pin/pw/pattern to unlock my phone. Wise or not, I like to get quick access often.
The G5 Plus is my first phone with a fingerprint reader. I thought that would help me get better security without slowing down access.
However, I can't find any way to enable fingerprint access without first entering a PIN, password, or pattern lock! Online tutorials say there should be a "None" option on that screen, but mine doesn't have any such option.
I don't see how this makes any sense:
- You can have no PW/PIN/Pattern and no Fingerprint
- You can have Fingerprint, but only if you have PW/PIN/Pattern to access Fingerprint. This seems to defeat 95% of the utility of having Fingerprint! (the other 5% being when you need to validate Google Pay or whatever)
It seems like having an in-between option (fingerprint only) would be more secure than nothing, so why isn't it an option?
Is there any way to have fingerprint access without having to unlock first?
You need to have a password as backup. You only have to enter that password once after setting up the fingerprint, and on first boot. After that it does not requires the pin
Also, many custom ROMs have an option to unlock with FP without unlocking it with pin/pattern at all
When you use the fingerprint sensor, it bypasses the password and unlocks the device instantly. Password is a backup in case the sensor malfunctions.
It also asks you for your password once every few days.

Using fingerprint for apps, but not login.

So, I'm looking around, but all searches are leading me to people who want something completely different.
I'd like to use my fingerprint to unlock apps like Gpay or ADP mobile, but do not want to unlock my phone using a fingerprint, just a PIN. The issue being that, if I remove the fingerprint option from lock screen, my fingerprint is wiped entirely.
Is there a mod out there that allows this? Or am I just stuck deciding between convinience and security?
I really like the idea of that ....I'd interested in that
I've never heard of a mod that does what you want. Android links fingerprint usage in apps to the setup in the lockscreen. I'm not sure how entering a pin is more convenient than using a fingerprint but if your phone is locked can't you always enter the pin instead of a fingerprint anyway? When you set up the pin and fingerprint Android forces you to use the pin at first boot but I don't think it ever forces you to use your fingerprint. When mine is locked and shows a fingerprint prompt if I touch the screen the keyboard pops up so the pin can be entered instead. Forcing you to use the fingerprint to unlock wouldn't make sense because if the fingerprint sensor stopped working you would be permanently locked out of your phone.
You misunderstand the purpose of what I'm asking. I can be legally compelled to provide a fingerprint to unlock my phone, but not a pin. If my phone doesn't unlock via fingerprint, this is not an issue.
So no, it isn't convinient to unlock via PIN, but it is secure.
I still want to use the fingerprint sensor for LastPass, ADP, Gpay, etc.
Would love the same, hate that they are connected. I do not need a lock screen but the convenience for apps would be nice.

Just remember on rebooting, the phone requires a PIN.
So if compelled, make sure you hit the power button and reboot the phone.
