[Question]How do I remove system app? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

So I was fortunate enough to have ArnovaG82 to look into the camera app of Essential and he said they enabled compression of 90%, so he changed it to 100%. You can find the modded apk here https://drive.google.com/open?id=1aQ50MgaKjHwVwNDe_1LA2Q46sQl0QtqE . However, it won't let me install due to having same file name or what not. So I used a system uninstall app from the Play Store with root enabled, but it would not remove the stock camera app. No matter what I do, it does a self restart and the app is there again.
If someone figured out how to completely uninstall the stock app and install the modded apk, please share!

Do you have TWRP? Might remove it from there and then install the modded apk. Otherwise, can you remove it and then immediately install the replacement? Titanium Backup to remove it and then install the modded and then TB it to a system app?

I won't be able to immediately, I just got this new again today, have to use it for a bit before I'll be able to unlock the bootloader and root.

Why do you have to use it for a bit before rooting and unlocking bootloader? Just curious

Because I make it a rule never to do something that can ruin warranty claims until I know something works properly first

Essential already stated rooting and unlocking bootloader will not void warranty.

Possibly, then there's this thread - https://forum.xda-developers.com/es...sential-phone-tech-support-using-xda-t3699646
Suffice it to say, I'm going to probably use my phone the way I see fit, regardless of what a manufacturer says or another user requests It's seldom worth the risk.

The phone is so good stock Root hardly seems worth it. I read all the threads about roms and rooting and will literally gain me nothing in the end but give me unwanted headaches.

I am rooting it for the sole purpose of replacing the stock camera app with the one that is modded by Arnova

Root on demand

First of all, I am not new with custom roms but I am new to Android which is totally different from what I used to know with WM.
Now, I wanted to avoid rooting my phone and modifying in any way that would alter it's factory functionality. The main reason is the unexpected behaviour with new updates and apps. However, I noticed that I cannot buy applications that I need and that would make my phone useless so, I realised that at least rooting is a must. Since I haven't done it before, I have a few concerns so please help me in the following concerns:
1) Can I just root my phone without altering anything else (without using custom rom) so that I can use some apps which need root access and use market to purchase apps?
2) After installing tha latest update, is it still possible to root?
3) Can I root on demand? i.e enable it when I need to use market and then disable it in order to return to normal funcionality?
4) Are there any real consequenses of rooting? major problems?
5) Is it permanent? can I totally remove it if I need to return my phone for waranty claim?
6) I guess I won't lose any data, right?
After the latest update, is it still

I think the 1.72 is not rootable yet, but ofcourse, if you install it via a custom ROM, i think you will be fine

Root And Unlock Bootloader In marshmallow!

Anyone tried to unlock bootloader by the asus official app in marshmallow?
Or tried to flash the tethered recovery and then flashing supersu zip?
Just try old methods to root your phone. Turn on USB debug and run the script.
If you can unlock bootloader with asus official app, then current custom recoveries should be okay.

Did you try any of the root methods?
The one click unlock doesn't work. Neither does tethered custom recovery. Haven't tried the official unlock tool. Not sure about root because I have no need of it to try.
I don't need the bootloader unlock or a custom recovery. Just root to get rid of these apps that can't be removed. 6.0.1 is pretty bloated.

What apps do you want to remove that need root to do so? All the 3rd party stuff can be uninstalled without root, and nearly all the ASUS or Google stuff can be disabled.
There are some Google apps and most of the ASUS apps. They won't let you uninstall so the phone needs rooted. Plus Viper, Titanium, Adaway etc will not work without root.

They won't let you uninstall but you can disable most of them. There's no benefit to uninstalling system apps because the space cleared in the system partition is not useful anyway.

Well as I said before it's bloated. I prefer mine debloated and in addition to that you cannot use certain apps unless you have root.
Been about 2 months since the last time anyone posted on here, any news on unlocking the bootloader on Z00A/ZE551ML tunning 6.0?
I root mm rom (version 61) with temporary tarp, just like lp rom.

Only problem I'm having is I can't get into TWRP once everything is done. I can get to the bootloader but no recovery mode. Normal boot works fine.

Maybe a Q: Easy way to unroot/root?

Hey everyone!
In the 6 years or so that I have been rooting/unlocking the BL, this thought has never crossed my mind, until now. Unfortunately, there are some apps I need to use that wont work with rooted phones. I think this is incredibly [email protected]*king dumb, but there is nothing I can do about that.
SO the question I have is there a way to disable the root/unroot the phone/make apps think the phone is unrooted for just a few mintues so I can use the app, then quickly put the root back? Any thoughts, insights, advice, etc. would be helpful.
Thanks!

I have magisk (it was part of the rom I use) but I have to be honest, I am not familiar with using it. I googled it a few times after installing the ROM, but couldn't see what it would do for me. Can you explain to me how to use it for this?

Actually I can't, I just think that it's your only option to be rooted without being detected. The op of this thread seems pretty straightforward: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
Good luck.

A. Hide root with magisk
1. open magisk manager, magisk hide
2. Select what apps you want to hide from root detection
3. Reboot
B. Unroot. Uninstall magisk
You can install magisk later for root

Root checking bypass / dual boot, newbie question

Hi,
I'm following this site for years now, whenever I need to root my phones or just have some technical question related to them, mostly I find the correct answer right here. So, I decided to ask something for the first time, because couldn't find an answer good enough about this matter.
I have a Galaxy S7 Edge (G935F) right now and I decided to root it for the first time. Didn't go so well, I got the "Verification Failed, Unable to restart your device..." error. Doesn't matter, I lost everything I had on my phone, but now it's working again. But after I wasted 2 hours and a lot of data for nothing, I realized, that I can't use a rooted phone anyway, because I need multiple apps (bank applications for ex.) which won't open on a rooted phone.
I have three questions:
1) Is there ANY method to successfully hide my phone being rooted, which works a 100% for apps like bank apps?
2) Can dual boot solve my problem, having a primary custom, rooted rom, but having a secondary clean rom for only these few apps? Or those apps check for something deeper, than that?
3) If 1) and 2) won't work, is there any other method to have a rooted phone, but use apps which doesn't work on a rooted device?
TL;DR: Wanna use bank apps on rooted phones, but they won't start because of the root. Any method to make it work?
Thanks in advance!

What is Magisk? A custom ROM? A custom recovery? A root thing like SuperSU?
A little more explain would be good, like the title says, I'm a newbie.

Where is the su of rooted S7 edge binary stored?

Hi!
I want to hide su binary from my phone temporarily to trick apps into thinking that my phone is not rooted. I thought I could just rename su binary from TWRP but I could not find that. It's not inside /system/xbin/ or /system/bin/.
It's more complicated than that.
You may simply need to check your Play Integrity responses. See this thread.
For more details on how the Magisk patch works, see this post. Don't start arbitrarily messing with things, though.
Start with the basics, though. Which apps are failing? Make sure you are using the Play Integrity fix. Add those apps to DenyList just to be safe. If they are Samsung specific apps, be aware that Knox Guard is tripped by flashing modified/custom firmware, and cannot be reversed, even if the device is returned to stock.
Thanks!

I rooted my phone with TWRP 3.1.0.0 and SuperSU 2.7 instead of Magisk. How much of it still applies and how much does not? I actually rooted it like 5 years ago already, now I just have app that does not like rooted phone.

I'd recommend switching to Magisk. Chainfire hasn't been in the scene for years.

Tnx. Will attempt this. How should I do that? Should I click "full unroot" from SuperSU? Will I also loose my data and apps or will it just unroot? Or should I do it from TWRP instead?

Unrooting won't wipe data. It doesn't matter how you do it.

Tnx.
Also SuperSU asked if I want to disable Knox when it first started. Do you happen to know how to revert that? Would like to revert my phone to pre-SuperSU state in that regard as well. Just in case. Also will I be more vulnerable to viruses/malware when it stays disabled? Or should this knox question be separate topic already? Didn't want to spam this forum too much but it's also not connected to original question that much.

I honestly don't know that much about Knox but having it disabled doesn't make your device any more vulnerable than being rooted. Be mindful of what you install, and don't grant root access to apps you don't trust.
