LG now supports v30 unlocked bootloader - LG G6 Questions and Answers

Can we get root for the g6 at all verizon edition anyhow. I mean honestly I paid full price for my phone. It's MY phone LG unlock the bootloaders. If I break it with root that's my issue but it's my device. So stupid. Almost want to swap to Samsung just for the developer community being so much larger.
Rant over

I wish all mfg's would look at this (developer) situation as you describe, but very few seem to. They are of course, protecting themselves (that's the 'corporate line' anyway), supposedly.
I'd say the biggest drawback to mfg's doing this is their product won't usually get recommended by developers, and that's a vocal group, lots of people read what they have to say. They may not understand what's said, but that doesn't mean they don't follow the advice.
I'm happy with my G6, the unlocked 997 has virtually no bloatware, nothing slows it down. But lessons learned for me, if you want to get any kind of device, look to see what Roms are available for it. Some SoC's aren't supported at all, even though they are good devices, then the mfg can limit access to the boot loader, etc. One needs to research first. That can be an expensive lesson for sure.

LG G6 H870 & US997 ,
LG V30 H930, H930G & US998
are bootloader unlocked. Don't know why LG only limited to these variants?

They're generally the unlocked or EU versions.

Will a root ever happen?

I have H873 and still have some days to exchange the phone, and wondering if there will ever be a root option for this phone. I just like to have the ability to change my emojis to a none android one and some other tweaks. I know the phone came out a couple months ago, but should I just switch to another device that can be rooted or stick around because there will most likely be a root sometime this year?
No, exchange it

It just depends.like today or yesterday lg allowed the us997 model to be bootloader unlocked.thats your first step i wouldnt trade it just yet.thats just my opinion
I would love to keep the phone, I like how it feels and looks and the features, just not used to being locked down and not being able to customize. I mean it's sounds like there could be a possibility that it could happen in the future. I might stay with it and suck it up. Other thing is why did they come out with so many versions, wish Canada could have gotten the same as the US, cuz Canada usually gets forgotten when it comes to this stuff XD.
You should have got the LG H870 single SIM which is an international version so that you car root it as well as unlock bootloader! Don't know when will unlock bootloader happen for the H873 as well as dual sim versions! This also might be the reason that the LG H870 might cost a little more than the dual sim LG H870DS.
I bet if a bunch of us tweet them @lgdeveloper then they might push it out

If I had the money I would have, but had to get phone under contract at $0. Been happy with the phone so far, yes some things I wish I had root, but sucking it up. Hope one day it will be available.

Yeah I have made some commotion, but more people need to do the same.
You want root, pretty much Google phones is where its still easy these days like the Pixel. I just switched from Pixel to G6 and I am pretty happy.
I was rooted for months but the problem is Google is cracking down on it. Apps are being blocked from Playstore now such as Netflix. You can't use Android Pay (now available in Canada). In all honesty even custom roms are no longer rooted, so rooting is going away for the most part as more and more things will block it.
If we go by LG G4 that boot-loader was never unlocked and only rootable on Android 5.x.
V20 was unlocked though so who knows, there could be a possibility but I would not count on it. There is a bounty thread in here so maybe just pledge some for our H873 (I think if they can unlock H870DS they can do ours too).
We had a huge petition maybe 10,000 people to unlock LG G4 bootloader, nothing ever heard from LG. I think the only way is the unofficial methods.

US997 from US Cellular

I just bought one from ebay and didn't know that it's different from the factory unlocked version..
Is there a way to unlock the bootloader or root this phone? If not I will have to sell it again....
You can't unlock the bootloader on the US Cellular version.

Crap. Researching this topic for the LG V30.
U.S. Cellular is selling the LG V30+ (128GB version) as the US998 model, whereas the "official" carrier unlocked LG V30 US998 that will be sold by LG, B&H photo, Best Buy, Amazon is the one that qualifies for bootloader unlock -- but is only 64GB. It's not the LG V30+. I was hoping we could buy the U.S. Cellular 128GB version and it would also qualify, since it's the SAME MODEL NUMBER.

Nope. Probably IMEID numbers in a database.
I also apparently bought the US Cellular US997 without fully realizing I couldn't unlock the bootloader.
I happen to use Verizon and the phone did indeed come carrier unlocked and works fine.
I attempted to do the official bootloader unlock (putting in my IMEI and my Device ID) and got an error: 'Unfortunately, your device(United States, (US CELLULAR_TULSA(USA))does not support unlocking the bootloader'
I emailed LG just to see if they can do anything but I doubt I'll get a response.
My phone says the software version is US99712a and when I check for updates there are none. Does anyone know if I could flash the .kdz for 14a (or presumably the new 15a) via LG UP or might that bork things?

Hi tahlsr, I'm not sure on your update question, but was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing where you bought the device? I'm in the process of buying one and worried about getting a US Cellular model. It's amazing in a way that LG would have 2 models like this with the exact same model number, and yet be different...
I bought it on ebay and I think the auction was a bit misleading. It just said unlocked (which it is) US997. I guess I should have been more careful. If you buy it used I would ask the seller to confirm that it is not the US Cellular US997 since as you say... it's confusing that there are two US997's. Unfortunately LG is doing that again with the V30 and the US998.

Buy the unlocked/non-carrier version of the US997 from B&H.
That's what I have.
Thanks tech_head. At this point I may just wait for the V30 US998 unlocked/non-carrier version and hope the dev scene for that model takes off.

Thanks tech_head, that's exactly what I have coming, ordered a few days ago. It's frustrating because these version numbers are almost identical, and sellers may not even know there's a difference, and what it could mean (unlock / can't unlock).
From what I've read, B&H can be trusted to send you exactly what you order, thanks for adding your input. I'll worry less between now and when I get it
Yeah... B&H is legit. Ebay... less legit if not careful. : )
I just got mine and tried to unlock the bootloader but the same thing happend to me i am very disappointed
That stinks. Did you buy an ebay auction and did that auction mention it was a US Cellular model?

I also fell into the US997 trap US Cellular to me was just another carrier that wasn't in Florida.
The reason to unlock the bootloader for the first time to me wasn't worth the effort. It is a great device as is.
I've updated the device twice since owning it using the KDZ files no negative issues.
I now also feel that it is very deceitful of LG Electronics the launch two different devices with the same general model number.
Waiting patiently for delivery of my Pixel 2 XL. At least now I'll get updates.

Which kdz's did you use to upgrade? When you do that it wipes the phone so in my case it may not be worth it.
I really hate LG now . the most stupid company you would find on this earth

Lockscreen Ads - Removal???

Searched but found nothing. Since May of 2013 I've been using an LG Optimus G Pro E980 on AT&T (rooted, unlocked, tethered) . The Bluetooth issue from KiKat and earlier (fixed in Lollipop, but this phone cannot get L) is causing me to have to factory reset the phone a little too often lately, and I feel it's time for, and I'd like to get an upgrade.
Funds are somewhat limited right now for a phone purchase, and the G6 ticks almost all of the boxes in the search for my next phone. That along with the reduced price on Amazon, puts this at the top of my list.
Amazon Prime currently has the G6 for $399 with Lockscreen ads, or $549 without. I figure for $150 savings, I'd opt for the ads and see if they are removable after the sale. I've seen some tutorials on how to remove the Prime Lockscreen ads from the Moto G5 where some code is injected and it removes the ads, at least until the next OTA update, but I've not seen a hack for the G6. I'm curious if anyone has the Prime-version G6 with ads and if they've been successful in removing the ads.
Can a pristine version of the OS be dropped onto the G6 and turn it into a "normal" no-ad version (AT&T)?
I have not scoured the threads yet (didn't want to get super involved in learning everything about the phone if ad-removal is not doable), but is this phone relatively easily hackable,, bootloader-unlockable, rootable? And, if so, is there a no-ad hack, or are the tools accessible, and is there an ad-free OS that will work on an AT&T G6?
Thanks in advance!!!

You cannot drop a new ROM because the BL is locked.
The Essential phone is $399 with the 360 camera on Amazon for Cyber Monday.
Essential Phone does not work for me. One of my requirements is expandable memory. I'm constantly factory resetting my current phone often when I screw something up while hacking. All my important data and music files are on micro SD, and a reset to the phone is a quick process without having to reinstall 60 gigs worth of data.

I understand; but if you BL unlock and install TWRP, you don't have to factory reset.
You can do a dirty flash and keep your data.
You aren't going to be hacking anything on a BL locked LG G6.
I do understand your point though. It's just that Amazon, locks their promo devices down.
I was under the impression that the US997 was BL Unlockable.

Only if you buy one that is specified to be unlocked.
There are two versions with the same number and only the one sold from places like B&H has an unlockable bootloader.
The US Cellular version is also called a US997 and you cannot unlock the BL.
The Amazon version is locked down.

Love this forum and those who post here!!!!
I was not aware there was more than one version of the US997. I thought there was one and only one US997, but now I stand corrected. Thank you!
Just to reiterate....are you saying that there is no work around via flashing to get the firmware that B&H, or a non-Amazon seller might have?
And a change of subject, and possibly a newbie question...I've never purchased an "unlocked" non-carrier-branded phone before, so I have absolutely no experience in these matter!!!!! I'm going to be using this phone on the AT&T network. Since it is not branded to AT&T, how will I get OS updates and security patches? Can I assume that AT&T won't even push OTA updates towards this phone?
And I've read a thread that said that with an unbranded device, I would not get VoLTE, nor WiFi calling. Any truth to this?
With a locked BL there will be nothing you can do with the Amazon version except use it.
As for AT&T, I don't know about VoLTE or WiFi calling.
On Verizon I get VoLTE and I don't care about WiFi calling.
OS updates come from LG. Verizon can't push updates to my phone.

Take one for the team. Mine is not unlocked and still owed on. So if I screw mine up there is no warranty. I had success with OneClick in the past on my LG G2 when i couldnt get any other way to work. It could be that one click assumes it can be rooted by seeing that its an LG. Might not know its actually a V35 or an older LG.

The pre-July Oreo bootloader exploit we use for V30/V30+/V30S can't be used on V35. LG/Google patched it in July 2018. No pre-July Oreo KDZ for LG V35.
Not enough people own this niche phone for devs to care. V35 doesn't even have a real forum.
There's two reasons.
Whereas every V30/V30+/V30S on the planet can be bootloader unlocked and rooted.

Right. Those are threads posted in OTHER XDA forums and tagged as V35. If you reply, they are posted to those other forums.
If you start a new V35 thread, you have to start it in another forum and tag it as v35.
The EMPTY V30S forum should be given to V35. Because V30S is just another JOAN V30 variant, which uses same TWRP, custom ROMs all other V30. Very strange it somehow (wrongly) was given a separate forum. All the V30S owners use the regular V30 forum, because it's V30!

Well that just sucks. I didn't look carefully. How ridiculous that there is still no dedicated forum. We are the bastard child between the V30 series and the V40. LG really dropped the ball on this one. I still really love the phone. Battery, camera, and general smoothness of operation, but I really want an option once they stop supporting this device (which I bet is going to be before the V30 series). I'm surprised that Google sold me this phone knowing that updates are rare. It's still running this LG version of 8.0.0 Not even 8.1, and it's still on the Sept security patch. I wonder if I can talk Google/Fi into refunding me and getting me a Pixel. I just love vanilla android and have had only nexus phones since the nexus 1.
So I was in touch with a PFi rep. I was told flat out I would be able to unlock the bootloader. I need to follow up with LG

My problem is i just want sim unlock. My carrier wont do it for me. Im still under contract.. Thing is i have 2 carriers...2 plans. I use one for just calls and very light data..(Contract-Carrier) and the other sim i put instead when i want unlimited 4g hotspot im paying 80 bucks a month for. Or when im in a bad signal spot for one. And my carrier wont unlock the phone till its paid off. The store rep told me i would be able to swap the sims just fine.. that it comes unlocked.. whatever dude.... and im stuck with the 80 dollar plan as well. Someone told me that there are some legit not scam unlockers out there. But my google ends up empty. So is there any way to get it sim unlocked currently since my carrier wont help? I know on my G2-G4 's i just flashed new bootloader and roms and i could swap out sims just fine.. And when i needed warranty or store support i would flash back to stock. Is that what we have to do to the v35?

Do not buy old Motorola Moto G for root or XDA in 2021 !

Hello, my friends. I am not user of Motorola/Lenovo all time but i decided to buy Moto G, an phone i had used 2 years from 2014-2016 and i was back then very satisfied.
Week ago i bought Moto G 3G/falcon for 20€ and i was very happy i am back with my old and very good device.
First thing which impressed me before buying this device how many custom roms is for Moto G so my primary target - root and custom roms.
It looks very good. I have again my cute Moto wow, i was very surprised, but... First obstacle, no 4G, nevermind.
This device ended with support at android 5.1.1 which also lag and i dont remember it so slow even before in 2016 i remember i had 5.0.2 on it but very smooth, so i think its old device i dont care, i will try some of many custom ROMs from XDA.
Day later after buy i wanted to unlock bootloader. No success and after reading many sites, i tried everything, but i am ended with motorola official page and same message in email from their support.
First noticed sentence: We love our developers.
Second:
"Bootloader unlock codes may not be available for older phones. If an unlock is not available, it will show as not qualified for bootloader unlock."
Attached photos from their page below post.
This is my last Moto/Lenovo device. First and last factor for not support for unlock bootloader ? What a cringe... Apple doing similiar thing like slowing down older devices but they got fat penalties as i know. I can understand not supporting official updates but this is so limiting and stupid!
Sony can be unlocked4ever. I am wondering how long time i can unlock bootloader for all sony devices, sometimes you can buy Sony with not unlockable bootloader but its one from 100 thousand pieces for example.
Dont buy older devices from motorola if you wanna root. I will never again.

Most older Moto devices were carrier-branded, and have agreements with the carriers that the bootloader would not be eligible for bootloader unlocking.
Although Moto still has these same agreements with carriers, most newer models are available unbranded, which can be bootloader unlocked.
It's certainly possible that the model you had previously was allowed to be bootloader unlocked, and the model you now have never could be unlocked.
The list of supported devices has never been accurate, and many models that can be unlocked have never been on the official list.
You can check the list of CIDs, to see if your model should be eligible for bootloader unlocking, that is pretty clear.
If your CID is on the list as eligible, try the unlocking steps.
Mote, the moto unlocking site is very buggy and many people get a reply that their device can not be unlocked.
if you get this message just keep trying, it should work eventually.

The age of the Motorola smartphone has no relevance whatsoever in regards to official bootloader unlocking support. Unless the device is an ineligible carrier branded model, the bootloader is fully supported for unlocking, regardless of when it was manufactured. As @sd_shadow pointed out, don't purchase a carrier branded Motorola device if you want to unlock and customize your smartphone. Most Sprint (Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Republic Wireless, etc.) and T-Mobile branded Motorola devices are eligible for unlocking per their agreements with Motorola. As a general rule, however, Verizon, AT&T (Cricket) & TracFone (Net10 & StraigjtTalk) branded devices are ineligible for unlocking, per contractual agreements with Motorola. Of course, the safest wager is always a retail/factory unlocked smartphone purchased directly through Motorola or a reputable retailer.
Although this is an older post, perhaps the info will be useful to members not aware of Motorola's unlocking policies regarding certain carrier branded models.
