I have the old unlimited plan (VZW grandfathered plan). I want to be able to hotpot as well as get wifi calling (I am often in an area with poor coverage).
I heard you can hotspot with an unlocked S8/note etc. but most of the posts say you loose advanced/wifi calling and can only get advanced calling if you install the verizon ROM.
Been scouring the forums -- has anyone figured out how to get wifi calling and hotspot with the old VZW UDP??? I really need both!
Thanks a bunch!
I was able to use hotspot on unlocked Verizon S8 G950U phone it was in the pull-down menu, but I read all VZW phones come unlocked these days. Also, I used to be on the grandfathered plan and switched to StraightTalk Wireless which resells the Verizon Network unlimited data for $55/mo!
I have a new VZW S8 and still have my GUDP..
All i want is Wi-Fi Hotspot unlocked.. to the point where I'm thinking about starting a bounty thread..
Anyone.... Please....
Maybe this thread will help you get Hotspot working...

Has anyone with an S5 rooted their phone and able to use Wifi tethering with the unlimited data plan? Or does anyone know if Foxfi works with the unlimited data plans now?
That's the only thing that's been holding me back from getting an S5 - I didn't want to give up my wifi tethering - actually I literally CAN'T give it up since it's my only internet in certain locations.
If I can get confirmation, I can go get me an S5!
Thanks!

Go get yourself that S5 yes "free" tethering works. I also have the unlimited data plan and foxfi works just fine and there are also other ways besides foxfi. There's a few threads on this.

There is a big post a few down from yours titled "Enabling the Tethering App (hotspot) on Verizon Galaxy s5". Please just look around a little before posting a new topic.

Yup, that's exactly what I did :good:
I use FoxFi every day for tethering with UDP on my VZ S5 - it works great.
S5 developer, rooted, Verizon unlimited data, confirmed working fine with WiFi Tether Router from Fabio Grasso from the Google Play Store
Moved to Q&A.
XDA,
Recently bought an AT&T S4 with hopes to unlock it and use my T-Mobile SIM in it. I've done some reading and noticed native wifi tether was removed from the rom although it was in 4.3 and below. What I need in particular is to know if there are any roms, or apps that would allow me to have unlimited wifi tethering, provided I have truly unlimited phone data?
I currently use a T-Mobile Note 4 and the rom I'm using has "unrestricted wifi tethering mod" built in. Which allows for unlimited tethering. Is there a way I could do this on the S4 through rom or app?
Appreciate it in advance.
I have an unlocked Galaxy S7 Edge (SM-G935U). My carrier is Total Wireless (Verizon MVNO). I recently got a new office at work, and the Verizon coverage in this part of the building is terrible. I use wifi for data but cellular calling basically doesn't work at all.
I've been looking at other networks, and I'm leaning toward T-Mobile or MetroPCS, one of the reasons being they have wifi calling and the wifi at my office is plenty fast. I checked in settings to see the wifi calling option, but when I go to settings > connections > more connection settings, which is where the wifi calling setting is supposed to be, there's nothing about wifi calling.
I had a thought that maybe the wifi calling option isn't there because my current carrier doesn't support wifi calling, so I contacted Samsung support. I asked if I get a SIM from a carrier that supports wifi calling, would the wifi calling option be enabled. They said that unlocked phones don't support wifi calling at all.
This confuses me, because this thread mentions some people were able to use T-Mobile wifi calling on an unlocked S7/S7Edge. But that thread is older, so maybe for some reason wifi calling was removed from the unlocked S7 Edge with the Nougat update?
I suppose the only way to find out for sure is to get a T-Mobile or MetroPCS SIM and see what happens. But is anyone able to shed some light on if this is even worth trying? I suppose it's also worth trying out just to see if regular cellular calling on T-Mobile might be fine at my new desk, but hopefully there's some way to do wifi calling.
Unfortunately I think you need the sm-g935f to get t mobile wifi calling. Don't think it was ever achieved on the U models
I had an s7 edge from T-Mobile (SM-G935T) but I flashed the unlocked firmware essentially making it a SM-G935U and I had VoLTE and Wifi calling working with no issues. It was about a month ago, so it was on Nougat. I would expect no issues with an actual SM-G935U on T-Mobile.
Well, I answered my own question. I switched over to the T-Mobile 10 GB $50/month prepaid plan and when I changed SIMs the phone gave me a "reconfiguring your device for new SIM card" message. Wifi calling is now active.
Also, this is a list of phones that support T-Mobile wifi calling. I probably should've checked here first.

My T-Mobile 6T has been great so far, but when I used the hotspot earlier today I was disappointed by the wireless tethering speeds. I popped the SIM card back into my old phone (unlocked Mate 9) and, although wireless speeds were slower overall, the tethering was much faster. I attempted to edit the APN settings, but everything was grayed out. I was able to add my own APN, but when attempting to enter 'APN type' received a message saying "Carrier does not allow adding APNs of type dun." Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? Is T-Mobile trying to get me to pay more for 4G tethering by somehow slowing my hotspot to below 3G speeds? Would the international ROM be able to circumvent this?
Thanks
if you're paying for 4G tethering, then call T mobile and ask for help
If you're trying to steal it without paying for it, thats a different story

Not trying to steal 4G, just wondering why the 6T's hotspot is slow much slower than my old phone when the the phone itself is so much more capable. My Mate 9 gets closer to full 3G speeds (500Kbps) when tethering.
Thanks
The only stealing that would be going on is the carrier trying to get him to pay for the same data twice.
Thinking about switching to MetroPCS. I got the dreaded hotspot warning from Cricket, and I've been meaning to make the switch anyway.
To be clear, I'm asking if it's possible to unlock the hotspot feature on my phone without paying for the service. I have the build.prop line and the adb dun line which is how I got it working on Cricket. But I've heard Metro may have additional bypasses.
The plan I want to switch to is the 4 lines for $100 which does not include hotspot. I use about 20gb a month.
Thanks!
