Hard brick - no screen (or home button) - Possible to fix? - Samsung Galaxy J5 Questions & Answers

So my sister managed to destroy the screen on her J5 (J500FN) and we sent it in for servicing, but they said there was a "software problem". But according to some research i did it somehow got hard bricked. I'm assuming it's something they did as the phone was fully functional (software wise) before going in for a screen replacement.
So i'm wondering, is it possible to restore the software to working condition without a screen (which also means i don't have a home button)? My computer sees it as "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader9008" and adb doesn't recognize it at all.

Does Odin mode boot?

No idea. With no screen all i could do was try to blind boot it (home button works even though there isn't an actual screen and an actual button on it) by pressing volume down + home + power and then i pressed volume up in case it needed confirmation. Needless to say odin had no reaction whatsoever.
EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to mention, the phone doesn't vibrate when i press and hold the power button at all, and as far as i remember, most modern phones do that when being turned on.

[11 April][Q] Power Button Not Working

Power button does not respond at any point.
*EDIT:except after battery out for a long time, then power button WILL turn the phone on, but then continues to not function as per usual.
However, the phone automatically turns on as soon as the battery is placed in, so it's not dead at least.
Also can not get the phone to be recognised on either of two computers (one running Win 7 and the other Vista) always get "device has malfunctioned etc"
Have re-flashed a ROM from SD but same problem. If holding down the Vol Down on start up (putting the battery in) I can get to bootloader, hence the re-flash. But holding down both gets to the hard reset 'warning' screen, but it won't let me press Vol Up to actually do the hard reset.
All in all a frustrating problem which means I have to remove my battery to turn my phone off and have to use the option from Windows Menu to lock the device.
Any help with any of the problems is greatly appreciated.
Also Power Button mechanical function is still normal.
Many thanks.
Sounds like your end key has become faulty as well as your volume up button. Both of witch are common issues, especially the end button, but most peoples volume down button wears out first. This is do to the fact that the end/power key is in constant use from turning on and off the HD2 or from getting MAGLDR to pulled up a bootup for those running NAND Android. Also the volume keys take a lot of wear and tear from constant volume adjustment especially if you listen to alot of music on your HD2. Plus the volume ..down key takes extra wear and tear from being used to enter bootloader.
hello
hello vsem
Yes it does seem that way, however I have had teh battery out over night, when I put it back in this morning it DID NOT automatically initiate the boot sequence. But it did after I pressed the power button, so it must have read it to some extent?
Also when the phone is on I can change the volume up and down as per usual, its all a bit strange.
Any other way to initiate a hard reset other than that menu?
Thanks very much!
It seems you are having a hardware issue, try sending your device to the service centre.

[hack] broken power button "fix" - remap genius

UPDATE: This remapping allows the Genius button to "act" like the power on button while your phone is on. Having trouble getting it to actually turn the phone on. Any thoughts?
Dead or dying power button on you MT4G? Mine was dying suddenly and i didn't want the hassle and risk a warranty exchange and get a phone with a bad eMMC chip or screen. Also didn't want to pay $100 to get the power button replaced.
Using the guide found below, I just remapped my Genius/search button in hopes it will become a power button (UPDATE: as of right now, it can only act to shut off the screen and to power down the phone--powering on the phone via the remapped button doesn't work yet.)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836702
The only difference: by key 183, replace FUNC_4 with POWER (all caps).
like when you press the genius button, it turns the actual phone on/off...or just the screen on/off? if it turns the phone itself on/off, thats pretty cool as my power button was getting a bit unresponsive also. you could also use the trackpad to wake up the device(not sure if all roms have this feature tho). but either way Ive never thought of this little mod, reps to you
I've tried remapping Genius and Camera (I know, potentially lose a factory reset option), NEITHER of these will act to power on the phone. They'll power it down and shut the screen off, but they won't wake up an off phone.
Could it be that the power button is the only button capable of turning the phone on (based on hardware wiring and $hit?).
I've tried swapping Genius and Home buttons...they work perfectly EXCEPT for as a way to power the phone on.
I've also read that you can power up the phone by plugging it in and holding down the home button. That doesn't seem to work for me.
There must be some other code that would make this work...
Thank you for this. With the TPU case holding the power button to power off the phone is a little strange. Cant tell if im pressing the button too hard or not. I do not want to press it harder than I need to cause I know how fragile they can be. Now I dont have to worry about it!
Getting a replacement
The remapping POWER is surely helpful to some...and prevents wear on the pitiful power button.
But with no clear, definitive way to turn my phone on, should the power button completely die (which seems like it will this weekend...it's worse each time), I'd be f*cked.
I did the web customer chat with T-Mobile to get a replacement. They offered me a Samsung Galaxy S. I declined that, saying I want a MT4G or better. They responded that the MT4G is out of stock and they don't know when, if ever, if will be available. This waste of time was about an hour.
So I CALLED customer service, explained the situation, the rep looked in their systems and talked with a manager and said they have *limited* stock of MT4G. My guess is that when something is *limited* they can't give it out as an exchange. Anyhow, this rep put in the order, making sure they had the MT4G in stock, and wondered why the web chat people said they were on back order. This CS experience took about 15 minutes.
Should have a replacement MT4G next week--hopefully good screen, good chip and good power button.
This is only my second exchange.
ANY changes to the power button behavior in the ROM are in effect only when the ROM is up and running.
You can't do ANYTHING to make the phone turn on using another button when it's off, without reworking the HW.

[Q] Stuck in safe mode, and some other weird symptoms

I'm taking a look at my coworker's Nexus 7 (non-3G model), and it's exhibiting some peculiar symptoms. The most obvious is that the power button was jammed - I popped off the back cover and took care of that. The button has an extremely soft touch now, but it seems to work fine.
It was also booting itself up in safe mode. I figured the jammed power button was causing some weird power cycling, and the filesystem had been corrupted in some way. No sweat, just flash the 4.4.4 factory image.
Still booting in safe mode every time. If I turn it on with power + volume down, I get the usual bootloader menu, and all three hardware buttons work for navigating the menu. Then I continue past the bootloader and get into Android, and it's in safe mode, and the volume down button doesn't seem to respond (though power and volume up work).
Rebooting the device with the ribbon cable for the power/volume buttons disconnected from the motherboard still lands it in safe mode. So I'm pretty sure it's not a stuck hardware button.
For good measure, I flashed TWRP, fully formatted all the partitions, and reflashed again. Same deal. Now I'm running out of ideas. Does the N7 have some kind of auxiliary volume button inputs somewhere that are jammed/shorted, and which the bootloader doesn't look at, but Android does? This is what I see in adb logcat:
Code:
I/WindowManager( 483): SAFE MODE ENABLED (menu=-1 s=-1 dpad=-1 trackball=-1)
I can upload the whole logcat somewhere if anybody is curious/bored enough to look at it. I couldn't find any interesting errors in it, though.

Power button problem

Hi all,
I have accident on sea where one wave splashed a bag where my phone was. After small problems with "laggy" buttons everything went fine and my phone worked correctly except power button. It doesn't react. I couldn't even restart the phone. And when my battery was used I coudnt turn it on. I tried to press volume up + power button million times, or all 4 buttons, and somehow I manage to turn it on again while still I was on vacation. Few times I have entered Android recovery screen, and Power button worked perfectly there (I managed to press power button and select reboot device). And after the phone turn on power button would usually works few minutes and then it would died again.
I have installed software for simulation of power button and it worked ok. This morning somehow I decided to turn off my phone, and I couldn't even imagine what kind of problems I will have to turn it on again. Whole day I am trying to turn it on, but it doesn't react. When I pull in charger then it shows regularly battery status (70%). I am desperate :crying:
I am trying to google or find any solution how to bring it ON again without power button, but without success
Is there any way how could I turn Samsung galaxy S6 Edge Plus without power button?
And what you think, is this some kind of software problem, and maybe some factory reset or flashing might help? Or it is more likely hardware problem?
Many thanks in advance.
Can anyone help me?
I have just found this article which might help me:
How to turn ON Galaxy S6 without using the power button:
When the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge is turned off, press and hold the volume button for a few seconds.
While holding the volume button, connect the Galaxy to a computer using a USB cable.
Wait for your phone to boot to Download mode.
Then press down on the volume rocker to cancel the operation.
After the operation has canceled, the Galaxy will reboot and turn on.
You have successfully turned on the Galaxy S6 without using the power button.

But somehow this doesn't work for my phone? First I wasnt sure which volume button should be pressed, so I tried with both in all combinations and still cant get into Download mode.
But I am glad that samsung had created some workaround if power button is not working. THis used to work on older models I guess.
Is there anyone who might know the way how to turn on phone without power button?

Since as you said phone is working you can take pictures or receive calls but screen is always black.
Can you see its black color or screen isn't turning at all.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Mine started with green stripes allover the screen and few days later - "black screen"
Samsung change the whole unit.
But if lcd doesnt work so, it wont recognize when i press the screen, can it?

S7 Edge BSoD Extra Info. needed
Hi,
Phone: I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge SM-G935FD
I was using my phone to send a txt (and at the same time I think I was receiving a text or call because the menu and back touch buttons were lit up) and all of a sudden the phone crashed as I tried to finish my text but the touch wasnt responding, then the backlight turned of like it does if the phone is not being used. But the strange thing was that the menu and back touch buttons stayed lit up (Solid).
I tried many methods to restart the phone:
Power button + volume down (FAILED)
Power button + volume up (FAILED)
Power button + volume down + Home (FAILED)
Power button + volume up + Home (FAILED)
So I thought I'll let the battery die and then recharge and hopefully the phone would automatically restart like normal, however the phone does not show sign of charging now.
So I tried to connect to the PC but it wasn't being recognized however when I press and hold the power button a sound of detecting a device sounds and then when I take my finger off the sound of detaching occurs. But I couldn't see anything happening, until I went into device manager, under "Other Devices" , "Exynos8890" appears which I know is the chipset.
This is as much as I know of the problem. How do I solve thins problem without trying to factory reset the phone and lose all my data?
PS: I didn't backup my photos (My baby children only copies) or Notes in NotePad, which has some very important info.
