My Moto X pure (on At&t) just updated to 7.0 and the messaging app changed to android messages. I can't figure out how to set the text limit, also are these messages now saving to the cloud ? If so how many messages does it save ?

Stock app is now Android Messages by Google, not an AOSP app... It does not store messages to the cloud at all, and it doesn't have the ability to set message limits that I have found. If you want more control I would suggest trying an alternative message app like Textra SMS or something similar.
So how many messages are stored before they are deleted ?

Umm unlimited? If you do want to backup to the cloud and use Android messages, checkout an SMS backup and restore app on the play store.

I used TiBa to move over my SMS logs from my Captivate but it seems that the text app wont load because ive run out of memory. When i look in settings>memory, it shows over 10 GB free. any ideas how to fix this?
looks like the max SMS history is 999 messages, any way to circumvent?
i'm having the same problem..i want to save all of my sms messages but it limited to 999. is there anyway to fix that? either apps or hack?
I use sms backup... Saves a copy of all sms messages to gmail... Easily grouped in conversation mode...no reason to keep them all on your phone anymore...

Legitimately curious question, but would you ever need/want to go beyond 999 SMS?
I'll bet other sms apps like handcent will work great
Is there any way, or via an app that I can find out exactly how many individual SMS messages there are in a particularly long thread to & from the same person?
Should work with SMS Backup & Restore. Create a backup and view its content.

Most sms apps have an option to display the number of messages a thread has.
Some of the more popular sms apps on play should have this option too.
YAATA displays the message number by default. You can't find it on the play store since it's still in BETA but there is a thread on the forum from where you can download the apk.
It's also a nice SMS app.
I use a third party messaging app called "textra" but when I text another android user on AT&T his messages only show up in the stock messaging app. How do I fix it?

I love Textra for messaging! Have you tried re-syncing the messages again in Textra? In Textra go to Settings, About, and click on Resync Textra.
I usually do that after I restore my messages using Titanium. Some will show up and others wont. The Resync option fixes the messages right up for me.
I'm trying to synch Hangouts app as my default SMS provider, but there's no way in this ROM!
My problem is that I don't want to use two apps with notifications when one of them is capable of doing both tasks. When I had my nexus 5, I used to send and receive SMS only by using Hangouts (an app that I also use for many other things), but now I don't have any SMS options: Neither an option to choose the default app for SMS in my system nor a function in Hangouts to add my SMS number as an account.
Does anyone know how to sort it out?
Thank you!
Hangouts just removed SMS capability. You need a switch to a new SMS app.
But the last version of Hangouts of my Nexus has SMS capability, how can I get a similar version?
When I add another sms application to my Samsung S8 plus the messages I have sent do not appear in the new sms app. I only see the messages I received and I have gone in and made the new sms application the default app. I have tried using Google and Textra for sms with same results. Odd issue but I saw someone else posting about this on a different forum.
Anyone know why the messages I have sent are not showing up when trying to use a different sms application?
