SD Card error on Oreo ROMs - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

Excuse my ignorance, but i have a 128 gb sandisk sd card formatted at exfat partition. while it works great on almost all nougat roms, in case of oreo ROMs(I tried aoscp, lineage, invicta and recently AEX), i need to set it up as a portable media storage after each reboot. Now is this a bug or something inherent to Android Oreo. if it is a bug, then i will most certainly generate logcats if any developer wants

I have a samsung evo+ 32 gb.. never faced any issue.. i was using Invicta O as a daily driver, however, switched to its N version, since in my phone camera wasn't working... However, I have not faced this like ever.. have u tried any other sd card? Dunno if it has something to do with Exfat..

okay will try that. there is a huge chance it is exFat causing the problem

external sd card not mounted miui

hi folks.
here's the thing. i just flashed miui 2.1.13 .32 kernel. and when i go to file explorer, i can only see my internal sd card. no matter what program i use... same. AND when i pull out extrenal sd card, phone says that there is NO sd card inserted. but when i put it back in, everything is back to same.
help? thank you
try to push the card slightly to one side or the other. That happened to me too and it was the card that wasn't making contact with the phone.
I got the solution with X5-Setting. Here ist a option for internal or external Card

awesome that helped thank you
I'm running .35 kernel, and have noticed that the last few releases of MIUI wont mount the external SD card after a shutdown & startup. It says the SD card is corrupted & needs to be formatted. I even exchanged the SD card for a new one and I still kept getting the problem. I found that rebooting the phone fixes the problem - the SD is now mounted. So it seems to only be a problem after doing a full shutdown - not a restart.
Managed to kill one of my sdcards in the latest miui, it got dced al the time and now i cant write, delete or format it. Have tried it on my laptop without luck. So be careful

Hi,
I have the same problem! If I power on the smartphone from a full shutdown my sdcard (the external one, 16 GB Sandisk) is not mounted, then if I restart the X5 Pro, Android mount correctly my external sdcard.
For this reason I wanted to change sdcard (before I had a Sandisk 4GB) with a new Sandisk 16GB sdcard. The problem is still here
How can I fix this problem?
I flashed a lot of different roms, based on B512, B540, custom gingerbread 2.3.4, Gingerbread by Genokolar, porting U8860 Huawei Honor for X5Pro, CyanogenMod 7.1 but I have always the same problem.
Please developers, find a solution because it is not a nice bug.
Regards,
kalo86
Experiencing the same problem on my U8800, MIUI 2.1.20, 2.6.35 kernel. After shutdown, the sdcard will not mount. Have to reboot to get it to work again.
Hi, I have the same problem and for this reason I opened a new thread discussing this bug.
Have a look here and vote the poll please

Apparently, CyanogenMod will only support fat32. And, since your kernel more than likely is based off of CyanogenMod, the exfat format will not work properly if at all. Does reformatting the card to fat32 solve your problem?
Also, there are a couple of kernels which are supported for all of the roms, that may have exFAT enabled.
and I have formatted to exfat32. but still the same.

exFAT incompatible with Marshmallow and/or CM13?

I've got a 128GB microSD card that I've been using for a while with CM12.1 on a 900T. I just flashed CM13, and it says that it doesn't support the card. I swapped the card out with a smaller one that's FAT32, and it reads it fine. Is this an exFAT issue? Is this just CM13, or does Marshmallow itself not support this? Any idea?
You have to select it under storage and format as portable make sure you backup anything stored on it as it will erase it

I selected it as portable, but that doesn't address the formatting issue. It wants to reformat the card, saying that it's incompatible. I've got another card in the phone that I've gone through the process, and it didn't ask to reformat the card. The other card works fine. The 128GB exFAT card worked fine before I flashed CM13, and is what I had the CM13 image on when I flashed it (so it works in recovery). The exFAT card is also read fine by my computer. I understand the implications of the exFAT format, but everything else seems to read it fine. I'm looking for confirmation for the symptoms I'm seeing, and wondering if there's a work around to using the card as is without reformatting it.

I don't like to hop onto other people's topics, but seeing as I too suffer from the same issue as you are, I also want to know if there is a fix that will allow people to use micro SD cards without formatting it in Android Marshmallow as I think it is absolutely stupid for the OS to ask users to format it before using it in Android Marshmallow.
Marshmallow wants to format it to FAT32, which is stupid I agree. Whether a fix will come or not is up to CM - I doubt Google will do anything about it.
I had to backup everything and let the phone reset the SD, it was a Transcend 64GB exFat.
Thanks. I thought that was probably the case, but I wanted verification. Any idea if it supports other formats besides FAT32?
It's not that CM doesn't support exfat - external usb in exfat is recognized and read. But using it as portable storage seems to make it want to format to fat32.
Update: marshmallow converted my sd card to fat32 ((
I was wondering why the speeds were a bit slow...
Well f***... I'm having the same issue. Seems like I'm stuck without ex_sdcard, as when I try to format the storage via android it gets stuck at 20% (cm13 + samsung 64 class10). Fortunately I could re-format the card with a card reader to exFAT and now I can use TWRP to send my previous CM12.1 backup and restore it. Really glad I dumped that backup to my pc
Can anyone confirm if this is a CM13 related issue or a marshmallow one? The former would be great, as there are more chances of getting a "fix" form them than from google.
Thanks a bunch.
I hate to drum up an old thread but I see it's only a few weeks old and never got an answer....
If I'm not mistaken, exFat is not recognized by Google Android natively. Some hardware manufactures (like Samsung) bake exFat support into their version of Android but I understand this is at a cost as they have to pay MS for licensing and MS is keeping a firm hold on it. Since CM is based from Vanilla Android, it too won't have native support for exFat. It will however support Fat32 but that sucks because it is slow and has a 4GB file limitation. I have read that ext4 is mountable with Marshmellow but it is not compatible with Windows natively. So the option then becomes how to get large files onto the extSD card if it is formatted to ext4 if you have a windows machine? This is where I'm at. I'm currently formatting a microsd card to ext4 to try and see if I can still wirelessly transfer directly to my extsd card or if I can transfer to the internal storage and then transfer from internal to external storage within the phone.
I'm sure there is a fix for getting exFat compatibility somewhere though.
I'm running 6.0.1 stock on my Nexus 7 and was able to access my 64GB exFat microSD via OTG using Solid Explorer and it's OTG plugin. Paid app but completely worth all the features.

Yes, but that is as an OTG device, not a portable sd card directly in a slot on the device. Apples and oranges.
I've just met this regression on my SIII, it's Google not coughing up the licensing for exFAT. Perhaps not surprising.
It's going to be fun working with painfully slow FAT32 after 3/4 years without it.

If you are lucky enough to be running a Motorola stock ROM you can set your card as portable storage and your phone will not reformat the card.
Can someone confirm this and will Moto phones support exFAT natively?

From clintonfitch.com, not verified by me: "But there is another feature that Android users have long wanted out of the platform that has come with Marshmallow: Native USB On-the-go (OTG) support. ... it appears that the only devices that this works on with Marshmallow are Nexus devices: Nexus 5, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 and Pixel C. I can confirm that I was able to connect a USB drive and a mouse successfully to my Nexus 6 and Nexus 7 while I was equally able to connect both to a colleague who as the Nexus 6P and Nexus 9. " I have not verified this; I use a rooted Marshmallow with stickmount and that works with exFAT 64GB cards formatted on my GoPro.

Try formatting it as FAT in TWRP and booting back.
I confirm Solid Explorer unlocked read and write exFAT USBstick via OTG. Maybe the only solution till now.
same issue
i am also having this same sd card issue on resurrection remix -marshmallow v5.6.7 where 128gb exfat card ask for format and erase for both portable and internal storage options whereas old 2gb FAT card works fine
i guess this is marshmallow problem.cause lollipop was fine too
now i looking to make my sd card work without formatting it...but i guess thats not possible

can you give us a direct link ?
Agni kernal also supports exfat but its just my sd card doesn't work even with it. i talked to kernel developer and he said that the rom must utilize this kernel feature in order to support exfat card and since vanilla android doesn't support exfat so flashing kernel that supports exfat without rom that doesn't is futile attempt. i know this coz i have tried it and given up

i guess you could make exfat work in otg with correct app e.g solid file explorer with its USB OTG plugin or with stickmount app by chainfire in CM based roms.
its the portable storage that gives problems
samsung galaxy series with touchwiz based rom support exfat. Samsung baked this support into their roms ,but CM based roms on galaxy devices give problem with exfat cards since exfat file system is not native in vanilla android

Disappearing microSD

Hi, I recently stumbled upon an unpleasant issue. I got xt1562 (stock 6.0.1 EU, no root, no cwm) and sandisk ultra 64gb. Sometimes (I fail to identify the source of issue) the memory card just disappears and the phone doesn't see it. Since the card is formatted as internal, i cannot take even pictures or download anything via browser. SolidExplorer doesn't see it in the list of storage as well. Restarting the phone or replugging the tray helps for an uncertain amount of time, the card becomes visible and then disappears again. I looked for obvious answers, but it is something special (not mentioned here or in google to my best knowledge).
Does anyone know how to solve the issue? I would appreciate any comments as well.
Thanks.
I had this same problem, but it solved by itself.
for this particular reason I stopped using the memory card as internal storage.

I'm already using sdCard as a portable storage & this issue still persists.
I have upgraded my sdcard as well from 16GB Sandisk Ultra Class-10 to 32GB Ultra UHS-1
but in couple of days sdcard disappears & after that i have to restart my phone to make my card accessible to gallery

I'm getting exactly the same issue. I'm using a 128gb card formatted as portable storage (exFAT ). I know when the issue starts because taking a picture with the stock camera app causes it to crash, and spotify complains about there being no access to storage. The card is being detected by other apps and Androids built in file explorer. I have to restart the device to cure the issue.
I have the same issue since updating from 6.0 stock to 6.0.1 stock.
What changed? There must be a reason for this behaviour.
Same issue here too after updating to 6.0.1 ota. Have to restart for it to fix itself. I'm beginning to think it might be linked with charging but not certain yet.
Searching the net it seems that Samsung users are on 6.0.1 are having the same issues. Google must be aware by now.
I fixed it with a different kernel.

Optimus --> works

Well, stock ist stock.
After updating to 6.0.1 I had no dismounts with stock kernel, but I didn't use it very long.
I flashed Phoenix kernel which resulted in lots of dismounts, this was fixed by Optimus Kernel for me.
I used to be have the same problem with a Sandisk Ultra 128GB.
I need to backup all files in windows and format it to back to normal.
This problem appears every 30-40 days after formatted.
The problem was finally solved by buying a new sd card (samsung pro).
Well, I was too fast reporting it fixed.
I still get unmounts. Not that often but it ain't fixed.
Never had a single unmount with 6.0.
Actually thinking of going back as this sucks balls.

I tried formatting my card back to exFAT. The dismounts were as much as every 10 minutes. I have now formatted the card back to FAT32, of which i had more stability, but this time I have started fresh with a completely empty card. Formatted in gparted then straight into the Moto. See how this goes.!!
Me too had similar issue after the latest ota update.
Everytime When I connect phn to PC via cable SD card disappears. SD card will not show in PC and phn. I need to restart phn to get it back. I'm using SD card as portable.
1st I formated the phn. But still the problem occurs
2nd I formated SD through PC. Result was successful. Now the card is OK not disappears while connecting to pc
This is the exact same issue I had since stock lollipop. I updated it to 6.0 since I though that this was the reason, It worked for half a day before it stopped and even on 6.1 it doesn't work.
For the record I also have Sandisk 128 gbs class 10. The only message I get is "Corrupted SanDisk SD Card”.
Some solved this problem with slow format option on PC.

Still no progress in resolving the issue
SInce my last post, I have formatted the card as external. It worked fine until i filled it up to 10gb (out of 64gb). Now I have exactly the same issue. Does anyone know how to let Google, Morotola know about it? Is it covered by any guarantee? I start thinking that I am back to 2007 with first android versions

Samsung SD Card corrupted | All Kernels

Hey guys, I've run into a little of an issue. I flashed various kernels on my AZMPM with stock android 8.1 , however none of them is correctly supporting my 64GB Samsung Sd card. It just says corrupted. When I format it by pressing the pop up,it says SD card ready ,but then again it says SD card corrupted. the first time I popped in a 16GB Samsung SD card ,it gave the same error, then I formatted it on my phone itself,it gave an erro,I popped out the card and popped it back into the phone and Voila! No problem! Everything is fine. However the same is not happening with my 64GB card, it just says SD card corrupted! fix now! I fix it then again error.
Please help.

1. Try reformatting the sd card via pc with correct format
2. Check if the card works correctly in some other phone
3. If the card gives you same issue in other phone then kindly replace it.
4. All the kernels out there are almost stable for daily driver now so maybe its not a kernel issue now.
5. Try flashing your stock firmware again, maybe it would work.

Thank you for replying ,but there is no issue with the memory card. I have gone back to stock rom plus kernel, with the 20th Sept OTA through TWRP file, now there is no issue with the card. Am I doing something wrong? I just flashed a kernel on top of the stock rom through twrp that gave me max clock speeds of 2208mhz on the bigger cores and 1800 something on the smaller cores. Everything was fine but the memory card.

Even i cant explain how this happens to you bro, but remember to wipe cache/dalvik cache even after flashing a new kernel or rom (not necessary for kernels but as a clean & safe side i recommend )
