Screen lifting off of frame - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Curious if there are other reports of this happening. I ordered a black PH-1 a little over a week ago from Amazon. It's still mint. Never dropped or anything. Tonight, I placed it a VR headset and after removing it, I noticed there was significant back light bleed around one of the edges. Further inspection revealed, the entire screen was basically loose in the frame. The slightest amount of "prying" would unseal the silicone gasket that runs along the edges of the display from the frame. Seems to be no glue whatsoever. The VR headset holds the phone in with a tension clip. Not a crazy amount of force and hasn't caused issues with other phones.

Originally, I had initiated a replacement, but upon further consideration, decided to just send it back for a refund and order a Pixel 2 XL. Bit bummed because I feel like Google dropped the ball with their lineup this year, but I don't trust PH-1 for the long haul.

for what it's worth, you seem to have found a way to remove the screen without breaking it. Looking at fixit clips, this is almost impossible.
cheers

Yeah, I watched a couple of those. I'm wondering if the negative teardown videos resulted in Essential using less adhesive in later manufacturing runs. After closer inspection, I do have the same black adhesive, but far less than what's shown in the teardown videos where they can't pry the screen off without breaking it.

Something is wrong with their QA. I bought two of them. The first one, the antenna band on the left side wasn't even fully attached to the phone!! It was bulging out the side!
The second one, same ****! But not quite as bad. Not acceptable, still bulges, but better. But the QA here is very, very bad.

So .. who dropped the big galaxy ?

Well i'm planning to buy this phone and i'm a bit scared of the plastic build
for me to be convinced ..there is nothing more trustworthy than user-experience !
so .. who dropped the galaxy .. where/how & did it effect it ?
check this out, it will answer your question:

Plastic, due to being flexible, is a MUCH better shock absorbant than super-hardened glass.
Best case scenario for a drop would be a flat-drop on the back.
Plastic used in galaxy s is so flexible that almost every drop is harmless.

WOW our phone is amazing! it can survive all that
finding a replacement screen is easy
incredible, as long as you don't drop it from over 1.5m high, you've got nothing to worry about
I didn't drop mine but I fell down with it in my pocket and now I have a cracked lens glass on the back of the phone.
I guess the lens glass isn't as strong as the plastic back!

I launched mine on a granite floor.was trying to apply a screen protector and for some reason it just flew out my hand. The back and battery ended up about 3 foot away from the rest of the phone but when i put it back together there wernt a scratch on it,and everything worked fine.
Every time I get a new gadget I go through a period where I'm terrified (well, at least worried) that I am going to drop it and damage it. No difference here. I have tried to be so freaking careful - then the other day at work as I was getting back into my car to run an errand (work related) I pulled it out of my pocket and inadvertantly threw the darn thing into a plastic/metal box on my passenger seat. I do not know how it happened. My heart just sank. Yet it appears to have come out of this minor incident with nary a scratch or sign of injury. Relieved.
I believe that it is fairly durable... thankfully.

Why not just use a case?
I think a case is always a good idea. But sometimes I just like to enjoy my gadget(s) unencumbered.
El Mono
Dropped mine three times before I decided this phone is too slippery to use without a good case.

the most noticable damange are around the slivery chrome on the side of the phone. Other than that are minor scratches around the front and the back. The screen was protected with a screen protectors from day one, so it remain scratch free.
Edited:
The case is ugly as hell, I know. but hey, whatever works right?
Wow it's pretty foolproof! but i won't try to drop it and i always cary it with me in a pullup case!

My screen is doomed - oil spot

I have my phone for about 7 months, almost one fourth of the time I held my phone in my jeans, without a case, only a vikuti screen protector and a silcone case.
Now, For a month or so, I have this oil spot under my screen. Asked around, searched and tried the duct tape methods without any luck. I even tried a suction cup I have from my gps car holder.
Not a change. So as soon as I get some cash I will see how much would this cost to fix or I will look into buying another phone. Maybe a sgs2.
Don't carry the phone in your pockets. You have been warned.

post a pic or something ! what exactly is it ??
It's also called rainbow spot. Here is a pic I found on the net on another phone that has the same problem, only that my spot is a lot smaller.

I had this, exactly the same, done it in pocket. but it was fixed under warranty.
before i sent it off however i tried bending the phone in half and the spot disappeared.
Now I dont suggest that anyone should do this.
But if you were going to get a new phone anyway, you could try bending with slightly greater force. (away from your eyes and with gloves on( it is glass))
Else there are threads which talk of replacing the screen, for techie types.
Good luck
thats not HD2
I've had the same problem twice, all you need to do is send it back to HTC and they will fix it for you...
But you will lose your phone for a week.
On the paper the send back with my HD2 they diagnosted it as "Newton rings".
You could google that and try to find another solution, if you don't want to lose your phone for a week or if you dont have warrenty anymore.
Good luck
I have bought the phone ~3-4 months old, without warranty. Now it is almost a year old.
Ok, let's say I want to keep this phone, if I want to replace a part, what part does it need to be replaced? Where do those newton rings appear? On the digitizer or on the lcd screen?
And if it's the screen, I've read that sharp lcd's are better. Where to find those for a nice price?
edit: Would it be a bad idea to buy from china wholesale sites if searching after the sharp lcd's part number? 60H00295-00P
Did anyone do this?

Just replaced my glass, please DON'T do what I did!

So, anyway. I dropped my brand new S4 two days after getting it. Had not gotten my case yet so it bit the dust in a big way.
Hit on the corner JUST right so that the cracks spiderwebbed the whole screen.:crying:

Called AT&T to find out just how crappy and worthless their insurance is - $6.99 a month buys you the privilege of paying a $199 deductible to get anything out of them.
Oh well, glad my company had not wasted the money on that BS! And I will make sure we never do pay for that.
Ordered a glass replacement kit from Amazon THIS ONE and it comes with literally everything you need but a blow dryer/heat gun. It even comes with enough double-sided tape to do about 20 phones
Watched a number of YouTube videos to see how it is done and finally found one that did not show a complete dismantling of the phone (which I suspected was overkill anyway unless you are replacing digitizer) and went that route.
It was a long and difficult process (about 2 hours total), but I did manage to get through it OK. Until the end.
I was so excited to be almost finished and so anxious to get the new glass on that I did not look carefully enough at the glass before putting it on.
Since this aftermarket glass had no "Samsung" name on it, I accidentally put the damn thing on backwards!
So the menu and back buttons are swapped (no biggie since I know which is which without looking) and the front camera is covered up with black.
I figure it is not the end of the world since I NEVER use the front camera anyway and I am sure I will need to replace it again eventually so I will correct it then.
So, any of you who have broken their glass - go ahead and do the replacement yourself. If even someone as clumsy and retarded as I am can do it, screw it up and still make it work, I figure ANYONE CAN.
At least I provided my wife with something to laugh at and a funny story to tell her friends at work.
Thanks for telling the story sir. The first picture of the broken display is bone-freezing !
What about the proximity sensor adn light sensor for the auto brightness? Aren't those also disabled?

Excellent observation!
Probably so, just haven't noticed I guess. I may have to go ahead and get another piece of glass and redo it sooner rather than later.
Of course it will be a lot easier with none of that UV bonded adhesive to hack through this time. If I thought I could get the existing one off without breaking I would probably try it right away.

How does your leather cover looks like?

I really like the leather. But every sign of wear or damage..., those things happen... . I don't like.
Especially after dropping on the floor three times.

Had mine since launch in the UK, my black leather back is still in good shape. Some *very* small signs of wear on the corners, but nothing you'd notice unless you were looking really closely.
I haven't dropped mine (yet) though!

Dropping the phone isn't a "sign of wear"...you can't blame it for getting dinged up on your own account. Same thing would happen to plastic backs.

Yes that is.... It's also wear... Daily use. And dropping on the floor is a part of it.
I don't blame anybody or the quality.
Guess you miss the purpose of the post.
Just curious how other people's covers look like...

I understand the post completely, I'm just saying dropping your phone isn't a sign of wear. Taking it in/out of your pocket and handling it constantly would be a sign of wear.
Mine actually looks pretty good, minus small discoloration on the corners. I'm actually pretty surprised by how well its held up. I suspect it depends on the leather used and how well it was constructed.
Mine is showing a decent amount of wear along the border/on the edges. I actually like it. I have the brown leather and the brown had too much of an orange-ish tint for my taste. I like that with the wear it's darkened up a bit.
Sent from my LG-H811 using XDA Free mobile app
I clean it with leather conditioner, so it's softened up a bit. Looks slightly darker than when I bought it, and the corners are darkening/peeling but I didn't get a clear picture, I like the wear though so it doesn't bother me much.
Before I took my black leather off and replaced it with the plastic and slapped a case on.
The leather was holding up perfectly fine. The corners seemed fine as well. The black is a bit different from the rest of them it seems though.

Today i almost had an heart attack.

While working, my nexus fell out of my pocket.
At first i thought i only had a cracked screen...
But today i saw it was way worse, i'm able to poke the PCB...
Straight away i made an attempt to remove all lose pieces of glass.

My insurance will be covering the damages(about 200 incl shipping and import tax) for a screen assembly that's around 135/140 EUR.
If you know any good international or dutch parts shop that has it, let me know.
I wasnt planning to replace my N6 any time soon. Bought the phone at full price so this really did hurt me.
That was a nasty fall. Good that you got insurance. Mine fell yesterday but was lucky and not even a scratch on it.
Have no experience with part shops here in The Netherlands.
Was it wearing a case? Currently my N6 wears an Incipio dual layer TPU/Polycarbonate case, but after seeing this I'm debating putting my Unicorn Beetle Pro back on. Just wish the Unicorn Beetle Pro wasn't so friggin' huge.
Nah, my case broke a while ago. It fallen couple times since, have small dents that were not on the glass. But in this case it landed exactly on the edge of the glass. Even a border/ back case would not have helped. Only the one's that partially cover the front edge.
The stupidest part is that it fell around 20/30 CM....
Well, a Spigen Thin Fit certainly wouldn't help and I wouldn't even call that thing a case. That said, even it is better than no case at all, especially when you're holding a phone that seemingly has been coated in Astroglide before being sold. You have piqued my curiosity however: just how expensive are cases over in the Netherlands? I'm asking because the Incipio I'm currently using only cost me about 5USD back in January.

You'd better to get a Moto Droid Turbo or Moto Z Droid instead.
Why would i do that? There is a reason why i baught a nexus 6, its pure unbloated android. The 2 arent even sold here any more ...
Cases here are regularly around 20 eur.. mostly because nexus device isnt) wasn't sold to the masses. So either fork 20 or AliExpress a cheapo.
@damiloveu: Neither of those devices would work in Europe as Europe doesn't use inferior CDMA technology.
"4phones.nl" is a retailer there. Might have others
