Well i'm planning to buy this phone and i'm a bit scared of the plastic build
for me to be convinced ..there is nothing more trustworthy than user-experience !
so .. who dropped the galaxy .. where/how & did it effect it ?
check this out, it will answer your question:

Plastic, due to being flexible, is a MUCH better shock absorbant than super-hardened glass.
Best case scenario for a drop would be a flat-drop on the back.
Plastic used in galaxy s is so flexible that almost every drop is harmless.

WOW our phone is amazing! it can survive all that
finding a replacement screen is easy
incredible, as long as you don't drop it from over 1.5m high, you've got nothing to worry about
I didn't drop mine but I fell down with it in my pocket and now I have a cracked lens glass on the back of the phone.
I guess the lens glass isn't as strong as the plastic back!

I launched mine on a granite floor.was trying to apply a screen protector and for some reason it just flew out my hand. The back and battery ended up about 3 foot away from the rest of the phone but when i put it back together there wernt a scratch on it,and everything worked fine.
Every time I get a new gadget I go through a period where I'm terrified (well, at least worried) that I am going to drop it and damage it. No difference here. I have tried to be so freaking careful - then the other day at work as I was getting back into my car to run an errand (work related) I pulled it out of my pocket and inadvertantly threw the darn thing into a plastic/metal box on my passenger seat. I do not know how it happened. My heart just sank. Yet it appears to have come out of this minor incident with nary a scratch or sign of injury. Relieved.
I believe that it is fairly durable... thankfully.

Why not just use a case?
I think a case is always a good idea. But sometimes I just like to enjoy my gadget(s) unencumbered.
El Mono
Dropped mine three times before I decided this phone is too slippery to use without a good case.

the most noticable damange are around the slivery chrome on the side of the phone. Other than that are minor scratches around the front and the back. The screen was protected with a screen protectors from day one, so it remain scratch free.
Edited:
The case is ugly as hell, I know. but hey, whatever works right?
Wow it's pretty foolproof! but i won't try to drop it and i always cary it with me in a pullup case!

I am soooooo annoyed!! Waited almost 3 months for this stupid phone to come into stock and after 2 days, i had to accidentally drop it and it has such huge scratches on the paint work. I had the sony ericsson K750i and motorola V3 for a year... dropped it numerous times and it hardly has any scratches. Why does HTC make suck crap quality phones????
Is there a way to change the front fascia as thats the part with scratches.
hmm how did u scratch it? i keep mine in my pocket and havent dropped it once or scratched it..
Sorry to hear that mate - gutted is the word

Are you sure you can't talk to place you got it from and get a replacement?
Where abouts are u in the world? If you are in the uk one guy got his cracked screen fixed in wimbledon - maybe they do other parts see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=51395
Possible you could disassemble and spray paint - see guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=43381
Hope you get it sorted.
Was sleepy... played with the phone after dinner... took it out of the silly tight case with my BUTTER fingers and it slipped and fell to the stone floor.
Its a t-mobile phone I just got 2 days ago from scancom. How do I get them or t-mobile to replace it? Based in leicester. London's a bit far to get this thing fixed.

Ditch that case nearly did the same thing myself - use 2 other cases now.
I would speak nicely to scancom they may be kind and replace it as it's only 2 days (blame the stupid case they supplied that may work!)
Are you sure you have no insurance? I always get mine insured £5/month but comes included with some contracts.
which retailer would replace a brand new set for me because I dropped it? I'm not sure scancom would be that nice. Insurance may be an idea but the excess is £25 and i'm not sure if its really worth it.
anyone managed to get a retailer to replace their scratched handset based on a tight case?
i dropped mine when inside its case when i got out of a car, but it only got very light scratches on 2 corners
Have a look on ebay at Krusell cases. They look like they completely surround the phone with a flipped panel for the screen. thinking of getting one myself.
Might be wise to look at screen protectors too.
for the screen protectors i bought the boxwave antiglare
I got my EVO yesterday and have seen threads about water/moisture and the EVO.
when I had my HTC Touch Pro I used it in light rain and never worried about it , so , I am a little concerned about getting this thing near water.
Dan
I use mine in the tub. Well not really I used the kickstand and had it seating on a hamper next to the tub and watched some shows...lol. I wouldnt think it would be worse than a touch pro or any similar phone. it has very few buttons for moisture to get into I'd say as long as it didnt fall in water and it wasnt pouring down rain using it while it was sprinkling or light rain should be fine.
Caution
There is another thread started in regards to this, be verrrry carefull with moisture and WATER!!! Sprint has been sneaky about how they placed the water damage indicator right on the edge, and I mean RIGHT ON THE edge of the phone under the battery.. Ive never seen this before. Most indicators are placed behind the battery
I have been told numerous times by sprint employees that the phones are physically checked for water damage if there an issue. They wont always turn you away immediately just because a piece of paper turned red. They can tell if water got into the phone and caused whatever issue you are having.
I still wouldnt want to go in there with the strips wet, but it does ease my mind a bit.
I wonder if you could put a piece of tape over the indicator and make it water tight?
I actually dumped most of a glass of water onto my phone without a problem.
What happened was I had my phone plugged in on my night stand and I went to set a glass of water down and it slipped. I'm not sure that the water actually fell ONTO the phone, but it was definitely sitting in a nice puddle for a second or two.
Luckily, I moved it away VERY quickly and there were no ill effects. Neither of the moisture sensors actually tripped.
However, this is making me seriously consider covering the moisture sensors with some tape.
That's just how close it is, practically sticking out.

I've got my shiny HD2 and i've fallen in love!
But after 4 days of owning i tripped today and my worst fear the screen crack!!! and its huge the screen is covered in 70% cracks. tho it still works but its hard to make out the keyboard in some areas
before all the posts about how to repair i used the search and am aware how to replace and purchase a replacement im looking at £32 on ebay and a few hours of time one weekend...
But now my question in my search for answers i've seen lots and i mean lots of info on this, is the screen the phones achilles heel. is there away to prevent this from happening. eg a good screen protector to help with the stress of dropping all falling!! would gel cases make a difference?
Basicly can i prevent this from happening in the future?
Regards
Wappy
cause you can prevent it, dont drop it!!lol, silcone case helps, ive dropped mine a few times and from height, just has to catch it at the wrong angle and it will go!

wondered how many posts it would be till some one said dont drop it lol
what i feared!.. is there a neck chain or a chain attachment available to i could attach it to my jeans so if it did drop it would only end up by my knee? but there is no hole attachment for it again meaning i have to hold it meaning my little fingers might drop it
Ahh MY old TYTNII I could throw it at people and it still worked lol, but im guessing bigger glass screen = more fragile!
Yeah, it sucks...this happened to my wifes phone like 3 months ago. It had a protector, but apparently a little rock on the floor hit the bottom part of the screen. $125 for a new phone.

the screen, for the size it quite tough, but it is glass!I had a LG BL40, dropped it after a week, chucked it in the bin and got this...apart from a couple of scratches, no cracks!!
well this is the damage to mine!
and with it still working
i've orded a gel case and a Vikuiti screen protector and hopefully that might help for the next screen
So my girlfriend dropped her S7 Edge from waist high in a Caseology case and the screen shattered. Upsetting because of all the drop test videos we've watched with multiple drops much harder than her phone hit and without a case.
I have a Unicorn Beatle Pro case and I've dropped mine at least a dozen times and no cracks. Those Caseology cases slip off too easy to consider it as protection .

Unlucky. Perfect impact can always cause this. Doubt it was any kind of manufacturing defect but that's always possible too.
Ouch
Seems expensive to repair. I use a very thin case (Spigen thin Fit) but I never drop my phone. But if (or when) it happen, it's a matter of luck, I guess.
Im using tempered glass and leather case its so expensive to dropping and makeing crash test 4 me
It's all in how they land. You could drop a phone multiple times without any problem, but then someone else drops there and it hits just right and shatters. Sucks, though. Sorry to see this.
From what I can see the case has a very small lip, which doesn’t keep the screen far off the ground, that combined with it landing on what appears to be at least 3 stones (the small impact points), makes it so the screen would shatter no matter what. You can have the best piece gorilla glass and case, but if you drop a phone screen down, on rocks, nothing will protect it.
Sucks though, maybe the vendor has some kind of grace period and will replace it for you. If they repair it, keep in mind that the IP68 rateing will no longer apply.

It does look like it hit rocks. It hit smooth hard surface.
So Neither the Verizon Glass cover or the zagg cover works. Had 3 different places try to install it on my phone. Touch Screen very spotty after install. What is everyone else doing now until they fix this problem in the covers?

I've gone glassless. Tried a couple from amazon and they both would fall off. Ther are no good reviews of them either.
Is the stock glass good enough to not have something on it?
Skinomi for me perfect protection and full coverage, yes I know it's not glass but offers decent scratch protection
I'm using this screen protector and case and it's a nice low profile design and I have no issues with touchscreen or the screen protector coming off. Very fluid design.

I went with this and it came out flawless. Can't even tell by sight it's on there. Says case friendly but I'm dubious. First time I put it in my TPU it lifted a tiny bit. Second time it was perfect. I think I might not have waited long enough for it to dry completely. Right now awaiting microSD before I put my SIM and SD card in it and start using the phone.
https://smile.amazon.com/Galaxy-Pro...4&sr=8-3&keywords=s8+screen+protector+yootech
I went to AT&T and asked them about glass screen protectors and he flat out said that if you plan on putting a case on the device, don't bother getting one. They've had no luck with installing them as the cases just lift them up, despite them being listed as "case friendly".
The only one that they had was the Zagg one. He said that I'm better off either going without a protector at all or trying to find one of those plastic ones. I'm not surprised by his statement as I've seen numerous people here complain about how difficult it's been to find one that'll work with cases.
Oh, so in the meantime, I'm going naked with the screen and using a Spigen Neo Hybrid case.
Bought one on Amazon before I got the phone. It had no reviews. I got the phone but haven't tried the glass screen protector yet. Went back to Amazon and all bad reviews now. I'll see if I can return it, I'll probably go without a protector, I think it will take a lot to scratch the glass.
