Was hoping to learn what folks are using root for. I am using substratum but would love to have an advanced power menu but wasn't sure where to look. Would also love some ideas of what others are using root for, for ideas. Thanks!

Doesn't look like viper works for oreo either? So what yall do on oreo after rooting?
Tasker, adaway, root Explorer and deleting unnecessary apps?
There are a lot of needs...
And viper4android. But unfortunately I didn't install it (I'm used to use the Magisk module)
Anybody is running viper?
What are folks using for advanced power menu on oreo?
I was rooted on 7.1.1 for Substratum. I am on 8.0 and unrooted since Substratum works without root on Oreo.
Oreo, rooted.
•Magisk + testing Magisk modules that might work with Oreo
•RootExplorer
•Android pay
•Titainium Backup
•Light Flow + Light Flow legacy
•Substratum (legacy)
•Kernel Auditor
•Waiting on a working TWRP doesn't absolutely need root, but an unlocked bootloader, custom recovery and root seems to go together.
And whatever else fun I find to mess around with.
Root is a must for me. I like the full control of the device I own. And again, it's fun!

Yeah... I was going to say. Why root at this point? The only thing I can think of is doing a Titanium Backup so I can backup the apps WITH the data. I don't know of any app that can backup the apps with data of an unrooted phone, do you? Other than that... I dunno. What you think?

I don't want a phone that the vendor or carrier control.
I own it and I scold be able to do what I want.
The only thing on a phone that should ever be locked it the radio partition so they can control how the device accesses the network.
Other than that, leave my phone alone.
Greenify's best battery-saving features require both root and Xposed.
I also really like the GMS Doze Magisk module for battery savings.
And I never want to do without the ability to use EX Kernel Manager or Kernel Adiutor to squeeze some more battery and performance out of my device via scheduler and governor options. Some of the options for this phone (hexacore mode, adaptive low-memory killer) are pretty intriguing and can't be edited otherwise.

Your philosophy is flawed...
Xposed just being installed is an enormous battery drain in it's current incarnation...
You're better off without Xposed if you're looking for battery

I was rooted, had xposed installed and realized that the fingerprint scanner is much slower and not as responsive as when i am on stock B27 or just stock and rooted.
Stock = less than a second to unlock
Stock + root = less than a second to unlock
Stock + root + xposed (without modules yet) = more than a second to unlock and device performance seems to take a hit. UI lags very often.
I have tried this on a clean setup as well same issue. anyone else with xposed having similar or better experience?

I had the same issue on b20, but couldn't figure out what was causing it. Do you have gravitybox? Maybe some part of it is affecting how quickly the phone wakes up?

I had modules before (xprivacy, xposed additions and Audio Stream Music Default). But on the clean install I had just xposed and still the same issue.
Looks to me that there might be some interfering between Mifavor UI and xposed.
They should really consider going stock when they release Nougat. Less hassle for them to maintain and easier for us to deal with.

Thanks for the reply guys!
I think I might have figured the root cause of the issue. I installed my modules one by one and realized that uninstalling xprivacy module fixed the issue. It's unfortunate since it was one of my favourite modules
my modules for whoever is interested:
-Audio Stream Music Default - pressing volume keys anytime changes media volume instead of ringtone volume
-xposed additions - cutomize volume keys with multiple taps, long presses for multiple use on lockscreen, screen on/off (i use it for long press volume up or down to switch tracks)
-xprivacy - to control what permissions apps use (but doesnt seem to work with MiFavor so i disabled it)
I had this problem while I was on b20, it went back to normal after I went and updated to b27 via @DrakenFX 's method.. When I came back up with b27, root, xposed, bl unlock, haven't had the slow fingerprint problem If it helps anyone else..

Currently it's not activated.
But 2 days ago, when I installed it firstly, after reboot I couldn't use the phone: it couldn't even get to the pin screen. It was continously doing a screen on and off.
I had to uninstall gravitybox via adb from my pc.
But it has to work (it says you have to activate it) even if it's not activated. At least, on my other device (Moto x style) it does.
Hi everyone,
I have a really crazy idea and like to hear your opinion about it. But first let me introduce the topic.
First, let's take a look at what is going on when upgrading from one major Android version to a newer.
The boot and system partition are filled with new content.
Beside kernel adjustments, this is only related to Android, not device specific stuff, right?
Then we have more stuff like the recovery, closed source drivers for the modem, etc. Several times I read about the "firmware". I'm not sure what is meant with firmware exactly in case of a smartphone and how much device specific it is.
How much is this further stuff related to the Android version running on the device?
Summarizing, what is done by a manufacturer when upgrading a device from let's say Marshmallow to Nougat? What needs to be touched and what is not?
Now to the crazy idea. What about downgrading from one major Android version to an older, espacially when there is no older version by the manufacturer? What would need to be touched in this case? Did someone ever try this?
Finally I come to the real question:
Is it possible to port Android Marshmallow to the OnePlus 5?
The reason for this crazy idea is that I can't live without Xposed. But the Xposed Framework isn't available yet for Android Nougat. And to be honest, I'm not sure anymore if it will ever be.
I'm a developer, but I'm afraid I'm not experienced enough to help porting Xposed over to Android Nougat. I would if I could, but my time is limited also.
In contrast to porting Xposed to Nougat, porting Marshmallow to the OnePlus 5 might be easier for me or us, the people who would like to have a OnePlus 5, but can't live without Xposed.
I'm curious about what you think about this crazy idea.
What about Magisk? I've heard that Magisk simplify everything
I actually like the idea! It would be great to have "retro" ROMs, like Android 5, 4.4, or lower. I know it's a bit stupid, but that would be cool in my opinion
I would love it also just because of Xposed, nothing else really

Magisk is a great tool, but it doesn't have the capabilities of Xposed. So this won't help.
But let's talk only about Marshmallow on the OnePlus 5 here, not about alternatives.
I would absolutely love if OP5 had a Custom Marshmallow port.....I also cannot live without Xposed.
I heard Xposed was ported on Nougat Rom with ARM architecture

Just curious, but why? What do you use in Xposed you can't live without that root and custom ROMs don't offer?
Due to the fact you would have to literally write a kernel for MM for the Oneplus5 as there is no existing one, it would be more worthwhile to put all that time into geting Xposed working.
It's probably possible but the mammoth effort to get an older OS on your device would not be expedient...

I am currently using the Oneplus 5,
do you think there could be any way i can use Xposed?
The reason I prefer Oneplus is for being so open and easy to root together with Xposed personally.
1. Technically it should be possible, you just need drivers that would boot Marshmallow on SD 835.
2. Older systems usually have simpler/less API than new one, so there would be no "unsupported" system features.
3. Easiest way would be to port a kernel from a device that shipps with SD 835 and Marshmallow, for now I saw some on benchmarks, but they will probably ship with N onboard when released.

Not possible currently without Xposed. Have not seen an app able to do this, have not seen Tasker or Tasker Plug-In able to do this.....nothing does this function. Very useful!
@geoff5093 OK, if you really want to know, I took the time to create a short list:
YouTube AdAway is a good example. It removes ads from the original YouTube app.
YouTube Background Playback adds what you usually only get when you pay for YouTube Red.
XHangouts adds certain stuff to the Hangouts app, like moving the call button to the manu, so that you don't accidently press it.
Amplify can extend your battery life.
Greenify works also only with root, but better (more capabilities) with Xposed.
MinMinGuard removes ads from apps.
App Settings, a classic module by rovo89, the developer of Xposed, can do several configuration stuff per app.
GravityBox is an example, that offers functionality that can also be done by using a custom rom, but selected features are only offered by this module.
I do even more with Xposed, almost everything isn't possible using only root and custom roms.
TL;DR
A custom rom can only add/change functionality of built in stuff, not apps. Xposed can manipulate also apps.

Thanks for the list. I used to use many of those as well, but the benefits of greenify and amplify are pretty much moot when you have to sacrifice the significantly enhanced performance of doze in Nougat.

It seems that not many people are interested in Marshmallow on the OnePlus 5. This is comprehensible, at least since we saw a first unofficial release of Xposed for Nougat here on XDA.
For everyone participating in this thread, Xposed is the reason why we would like to see Marshmallow on the OnePlus 5. Once Xposed for Nougat is out, the idea get's obsolete.
Let's see when we will get Xposed for Nougat, hopefully rovo89 is successful! :fingers-crossed:

Well, I'm officially getting old I guess...
Was hoping to see if root cloak works and I see that hasn't been supported for a while. So, I went ahead and uninstalled using the uninstaller.zip arm64 for sdk 24, most recent version.
Anyone wondering;
Uninstalling, for me, went just as easy as installing.
Sounds like everything, for 7.0+ is still in beta/testing by rovo so do all this at your own risk.

I don't see the point in uninstalling because root clock doesn't work though, eitherway you can't use Knox or SafetyNet so might as well have Xposed.
Also there is another module called No Device Check which lets you use simpler apps like Snapchat, Mario Run, Pokemon GO etc... no Android Pay though.

If you wanted to. Just a suggestion, because a lot of people will ask what works and what doesn't unless there is a list already. Thanks for the information. !
Don't get me wrong there are some good ROMS around from time to time but there's also something to be said about stock rooted with mods. Sure it might take more time but you'll also get guaranteed updates until EOL. You can add or remove as much as you want. I appreciate those who still make ROMs for this device. Just wanted to share my two cents and what I'm using for anyone curious..
ROM: Stock
Root: Magisk
Recovery: TWRP
Magisk Modules:
App Systemizer
BusyBox
F-droid privileged ext
iOS 12.1 emojis
Mm recovery mode
RIRU core/exposed (sandhook)
System accent colors for p
Viper4android fx legacy materialized
YouTube vanced
Systemless hosts
Substratum
EdExposed apps:
Gravity box
Gravitybox mods:
Volume button media control
Screen off Torch power button
Network traffic indicators
.. much much more
And of course your favorite root apps:
Adaway (w/ Steven black list)
VPN hotspot (f-droid)
Afwall+
Substratum themes
ExKernel manager w/ latest kernel.
Anyways just trying to start a friendly conversation, feel free to share your setup!
That's a nice setup you got there. Mine is much more vanilla:
Q beta 5
Magisk stable
ElementalX kernel
AdAway
Battery Charge Limit
AOD enabled through Substratum
Tasker set up to turn off AOD when there are no notifications/media active
If I may ask, are you able to pass SafetyNet and use Google Pay with Xposed installed? Does the kernel-level patch override Xposed as well?
Thanks
I used to have this setup:
- ROM: stock Pie
- Root: latest Magisk
- Recovery: TWRP
- Kernel: Franco Kernel
Magisk modules:
- Busybox
- Systemless debloater
- LKT
- Quickswitch
- Viper4android
- AOD enabler
- Youtube Vanced
- Volume steps increaser
- Product Sans systemless font
Useful root apps:
- Adaway
- Titanium Backup
- Substratum + themes
- Tasker (listed here because of root tasks)
My phone was amazing. It's been like 3 years like this. Then I wanted to try something new, so as of now I've installed the EvolutionX 2.0 ROM, which is pixel experience based and has some of those features I listed above built-in.
So far so good, great performance and good battery life. Let's see how it goes. I might go back to Q when the stable build comes out, and I may keep stock again with those mods.
P.S. for @Flipz77: I also tried EdXposed before, and it doesn't break safetynet. Just realized that I don't really need it if using magisk modules + tasker, also performance are worse for me with EdXposed installed.

To my knowledge Google pay hasn't worked for anyone for a while since they started flagging modified boot loaders. Even just vanilla Magisk breaks it. So no, won't work for anything but stock iirc. Otherwise yeah still passes safety net for other checks.

I think the ultimate fix is running a custom kernel that includes the safetynet patch.
GPay has always been working for me ever since., both on ElementalX and Kirisakura
As long as I stayed on stock kernel, no amount of fiddling around with Magisk helped.

I got stuck on boot loading with g after flashing magisk. How do u manage to flash it?
NOTE** After a week of using edexposed it was evident that my battery life suffered, as such please be aware of this trade off, for me it's simply not worth it but please read on if you're fine with it.. you'll still get a day but the difference is clear.

There's an image of what it looks like on my phone afterwards, I can't post it here as it's an edit, just check the thread
Thanks @burtonlax for reminding me that Xposed is still a thing.
It will appear off center as it's relative to the screen, bare in mind our cut out is on the left
If this thread looks odd, its because it started out as a question.
So with the latest yahfa canary and edxposed in App List mode with SafetyNet Pass enabled, safety net is passing for me. GPay will let me set up contactless payment if I want to.

So from what I have, what would I update?
Cheers man this is great to know.
Currently removed the clock from the status bar. Prefer it to on the left.
K-Klock may cause a bootloop so haven't tried that.
Short of finding a way to get FSBI working (which would require xposed - I tried edxposed yahfa, no luck) I haven't found a way.
Our icon blacklist does not have positional clocks, and the substratum theme I tried just resulted in a bootloop.
I badly want to put the clock back on the right side but so far I haven't found a way to do it.
Try gravitybox

Thanks.
The right side? Why?? That would look mental.
Take a look at my screenshot
Battery round the camera, networks on the right, would have been perfect to have the clock in the middle, why would it wasn't the clock on the right too?
Anyway nvm appreciate your response. I think carbon has this option and probably PA. I'll probably the up on one of them.
Cheers.

Have you installed xposed on Android 10 ?
There are several xposed apps I used to use but I haven't seen anything about it on this phone or my last one. The last phone I had, most the mods started to fall to work.
Personally I wouldn't go for xposed, should have put that in the OP.

? You decided that the clock looked better on the left?
never heard of it tbh. How did you install it? The chap above seemed to be having issues.
I've just come across an issue myself, my phone has two OS's one is carbon the other is oxygen, trying to get back to oxygen.
This AB **** is really crap. Just doesn't need to be this tedious
EDIT: Just flashed the zip from oneplus to both slots then formatted data in stock recovery. Back now
I don't know but it would be a nice addition for your magisk rom module.
Perhaps even add full date next to clock?

I agree
I'm trying to find the time which needs to be edited to move the clock.
Apparently it was changed to avoid notches..
Besides xposed there must be a way.
So yep gravity box seems to be our only way at the moment.
Added a guide to the op.
Sorry I know it's not easier to accomplish but that's avenue in 2020
PS: little off centre. It's already smiting me.
Added the date, looks ok now
I think it looks more natural on the left.
*chef kiss*
Obviously doesn't pass safetynet with xposed, but worth it for GravityBox and the stuff it enables me to do.
