Hi Guys,
just wondering, does anyone have a desire Z on orange UK? I was wondering if the phones are sent out with orange software etc rather than plain android operating system? I know the older phones orange used to brand them by not just the sticker but also their software...
Also are the phones normally simlocked?
One more thing - how has your experiance been in orange network? I have seen some complaints as to getting internet can be slow etc... Not sure if this is the right place to ask but would like to know...
I am planning to move to a desire z on orange - currently got a htc touch hd on O2.
Thanks for your help!
Orange as a network are not too bad, and are getting slowly better again.
Their phones will be sim locked, and also while locked you won't be able to install any new radio firmware on your phone (they just won't work).
They have been known to use their own launcher lately, however sense will still be installed so you can swap to htc's stock launcher, not sure on what they are doing with the Z though.
I have an unbranded unlocked z and running on orange, the signal is fantastic.
I got mine from Mobiles.co.uk and all their handsets are supposed to be unlocked and unbranded. Mine is definately unbranded but haven't tested if it's unlocked.
Do Orange even sell the DZ ? I can see the DHD on their website, so I guess there's a good chance the DZ is following behind.
Remember that coverage can vary greatly, depending on where you are. See if you can borrow a phone from someone you know who has Orange, to test the signal out in your area. Or get a free pay-as-you-go SIM from Orange to test out the signal before you commit. Orange and T-Mobile are merging, so their coverage should improve through that.
Orange is terrible where I am and Vodafone is good, but if I moved somewhere else it could easily be the other way round.
Well Orange and T-Mobile have/are merging so they will have the best coverage in the country come March.

Well, if they both had dodgy coverage in a particular area, then with the merger they'll still have dodgy coverage there. So I'm not sure it's that simple ?

how many places in the country don't get either signal though? only places right in the sticks would fail to get a signal.

You'd be suprised. For example, in my house the Orange and T-Mobile signals are bad (had them before), but Vodafone is fine. Similarly a friend's house in a different part of the country has the same issue (Vodafone isn't that great there, but a lot better than the Orange/T-Mobile signals).
Orange vs T-Mobile
Thanks guys... well I was planning to get the phone from CPW - like mentioned it is not offered directly from orange.
T mobile has good offers for the phone as well... but have read that when getting the phone from places like CPW, they cap the speed of data which has me concerned. Otherwise their 1GB allowance is definitely more attractive to try out.
hmm anyone has got any experiance of T-mob data speeds?

I am currently on ORange in Dundee with a Pro2, data and voice been fine almost anywhere in the city (3G loses a bit when I'm in the middle of my house but it IS a new build so the attic is extra thick for insulation. However I noticed that when I set up the T-Mobile/Orange roaming a few weeks ago, it picks up a strong T-Mobile signal in the places it couldn't before. Now I have taken out a Desire Z via MobilePhonesDirect.co.uk on T-Mobile and I'm still using the Orange SIM in the Desire until my contract runs out come February and it's given me no problems. Simply roams to T-Mobile in several consistent blackspots... Once the T-Mobile 3G can be used on Orange it'll be even better!

Hello
I just happen to have upgraded to desireZ with cpw, and im on orange uk. Internet speed is fine (when u get H connection). In london though its pretty much everywhere
Whats best with orange is fact that they joined with t_mob and now the coverage is even better, although 3G will only start after Xmas :S...
Otherwise, phone is brill, but Im still getting used to android (used to be winmo for past 3 years...)
Hope this helps

I also upgraded via CPW, it's worth pointing out that 90% of their phones are sim unlocked and unbranded
Am currently on TMob and with the recent merge Tmob/orange you have the option to jump network when reception is crap, at the moment it's only 2g tho

Am gonna be moving from Win Mo as well... so not even sure how much data usage I might need per month on android!!!!
Do you find that 500MB is sufficient for your use?

I've not done a speed test yet nor experienced any slowness, only when there's bad reception.

To be honest I'm not sure, am on unlimited web n talk (internet) which works out to be 3gig for an extra fiver a month. I think with these types of phones you'd be better off with unlimited if you can get it
Is 500mb enough?
Well, I used to be on 500 for 18 months, and only once went over when my landline i-net was down due to BT. But now with the upgrade Ive gone for 1gig, and Im glad I did. This market thing is so much bigger than msofts winmo! Also, fone seems so much snappier with inet, utube,msn... I will deffo go over 500/month.
Just realized I havent installed skype yet...
Is 1gig gonna be enough...???

There's an app on market called NetCounter which shows your data usage, might be worth using that to help monitor data.
Im currently on Orange (contract now expired) and also looking to upgrade to a Desire Z with Orange (currently using HTC Touch HD).
I'm going to call Orange direct first and see what I can get. If they still don't do the Z then I might get it through Phones4U, on Orange, as they are offering the Z for free on a 24 month contract @ £25 pm which seems quite good.
Phones4U can also do upgrades so I have sent them a request to see if they can offer anything better than the £25 pm contract.
Hi, not a big problem as I am normally on wifi but I've noticed that my GSII is constantly dropping of HSDPA every few seconds and if I do a speed test it only gets around 300kbps.
Now I have an LG Optimus on the same network, same room and that stays on HSDPA and gets around 1800kbps on downloads.
Any idea what would cause this?

Don't have another phone here right now to test against but just did a couple of tests with speedtest.net app

1422kbps/2967kbps

Seems to work just fine here at least. Granted this is at a place with good HSDPA coverage.
Sorry to tell you that but it seems like a bug in the phone, i do have the same issue, i surfed the couple of forums and the problem is spreading, hoping it's not a hardware issue.

Yes I think it's a phone issue as my HTC Desire and LG Optimus are both working fine.
Hmmm. I hope this can be sorted with a software update.
mine too, infact wont go over 1900 had like 3500 on my iphone 4
Just updated to the newest firmware using Kies and it made no difference to the problem with HSDPA :-/

I think it's a network restriction. People in another thread were having similar problems with buying the handset and the contract separately meaning the data plan they were on was only at 300kbps.
If you've got another handset that gets a higher speed, switch the sim cards and see if that changes anything.
My phone will only download around 360kbps but will upload at 1mb, so puzzled as to why it would be a network restriction (hoping it is as I'm not happy and still within my 14 day cooling period) ringing o2 later...

No, it's not a network restriction. Not on Three anyway. I've just taken the PAYG SIM out of my LG which is getting around 1800kbps and put it in the Galaxy SII and it now only gets 64kbps!!! It's constantly flickering between 3G and HSDPA. It's definitely a phone issue.
i had posted in the other thread about how it switches down to 3G when it's not being used and instantly switch over to H+ when in use. There were no performance issues
Also on AT&T network, when it's first started/activated it took a little bit of time before network performance improved both on day one and when i switched over to an unlimited data plan
Oh I forgot to mention. I reported this issue to Samsung yesterday but don't hold your breath!
The man I spoke to didn't seem to understand what I was saying and when I advised him that there were many similar problems and issues being faced by people on this forum, he simply stated that he had never heard of the site. I gave him the web address but doubt they will ever look in to it.
If your facing this issue, then I would ring them and report it. That's the only way they are going to find out about the issue.
Normal behaviour for it to sit on 3G, only switches to H+ once it's in full flow.
This usually impacts speedtests and such.
Best way to test is to download a file off a fast server.
Same thing use to happen with my Desire.

I have numerous 3G devices here and none of them cuts of HSDPA so erratically. If I start to stream AudioGalaxy on my LG Android, the HSDPA stays on as does my Huawei MiFi. The Galaxy S II is dropping connection every few seconds.
It doesn't make sense for two Android phones in the same room with the same network to get completely different speeds. Maybe a small difference but to get one having 1800kbps and the other 64kbps shows there is a problem.
I've just updated the phone to KE2 and it's made no difference. Will have to wait to see what Samsung say.

How strong is the signal in dB or just bars whe nit switches around between 3G and H/H+?
That last sentence - did you contact Samsung with the problem and are waiting for their reply? thanks
It's around the -100 dBm mark with 2 to 3 bars. Yes I contacted Samsung yesterday and am now waiting for a reply.

thanks, could be the lower signal , SGS2 being unable to pick it up reliably.
Please update this thread with whatever Sam says. I think I am experiencing same problem (unstable data signal in areas with weaker coverage)
So this happens quite a lot.
I'm on the Play Store, for example, downloading a 20mb app. It jumps from 0 to like 10mb downloaded very fast, and then it turns to molasses, like 30kb every 2 seconds.
On speedtest.net app, it jumps up to 20mbps, then slows to 2.
Why the hell does this happen???!!!
Tethering is also very slow.
Nope, IPv6 didn't fix it.
Bump.
No one else has this problem? I would like to know so that I can chalk it up to a defective device before my return period is over.
Or is this a T-Mobile screw-you that many of us have to deal with?
I have personally not seen any drastic speed changes with my LTE (D802), but i do see my bars drop alot, but that might just be my coverage. About 2 weeks ago i was using a 3G network, so anything above 2 is way faster for me. Might want to take it into the store, so they can have a look at it.

Thanks for your input. I'm going to take it in; I just wanted to know other people's perspectives. If no one else is running into the issue, then it's probably just a sim card or defective device problem, which would reassure me that a new phone will probably fix it.
If many others are experiencing the same problem, then it's more problematic because it points to T-Mobile screwing people over with false "unlimited high speed data" in good-coverage areas.
Okay, so I just ran a few speed tests, got 30ms ping, 25 down and 11 up, and I did not seem to get any drops. My guess is that there is a problem with your unit. Good luck getting a replacement (Don't know if i should be ironic with that last one)

I don't think it will be a problem. I just got it last week. Should still be good on return-window.
I don't know who your carrier is or where you have seen this occur, but Verizon has acknowledged that in "big cities" their LTE infrastructure is overcrowded and some traffic will downgrade to 3G or 2G. They have promised to resolve the issue by the end of the year. We'll see.
Mine seems to do this a lot especially when tethering, and now starts to drop calls I assumed this was to do with EE in uk
I thought it would be cool to have a thread where everyone can brag about what their network speed is like.
It can also show people what type of speed they might be able to achieve if they get this phone

I guess it's also handy to post our signal strength, since in the end that's the thing that makes these results vary.

Dang. I can relate: mine's somewhere between 8 and 12mbit/s down, and somewhere between 800k and 1mbit/s up... Though, any uploading will render the down-stream almost unusable. Say I want to upload a video and idly browse websites while I wait, or play an online game, even one as light on traffic as a super quiet Minecraft server... not happening. Latency is through the roof until the upload's done. :/
On the plus side, it's unlimited, so I've got that going for me which is nice. I've still been tempted to use my phone's 4G to quickly upload things, though. :I

I live in a very suburban, non congested area as well so I don't know if it's just me, but has anyone else on Verizon had this slow data issue and if so is there a solution?

Thanks for this tip! I've always had crappy network speeds since they reintroduced the new "unlimited" plans (in my area it went from getting 50 Mbps down to like 2 Mbps) after that. And of course Verizon refuses to accept they did anything on their end to cause the decrease in speed. But anyways on my 6T I was getting around 4 Mbps down and after changing to LTE/CDMA/UMTS (Auto) I'm pulling around 20 Mbps down!
I have a tower behind me a few hundred yards. Just pulled 80 down and 11 up. Same network settings.
I am getting similar speeds to what I got on my G7.

No problem, but just a fair warning sometimes the phone will automatically revert itself back to the other one because of the"auto"status of this version. I was experimenting more and found the permanent fix to be changing it to "LTE/WCDMA"
Seems to be hit or miss for me. The other day I got this (https://www.speedtest.net/result/a/4400707884) 70 down and 20 up. But then sometimes I wont get more than 5. Still definitely faster than my note 8 ever was tho. I love this phone man.
