Tmobile Blocking tethering - im rooted on cm7

Well yesterday I was tethering like i've done every day on my device and I kept getting redirected to a tmobile webpage telling me to pay an extra $15 per month for tethering.
My T989 Sgsii is using CM7 and there is no tmobile tethering software on the device. Is anyone else able to tether? Im on a prepaid contract have have tethered every day for free since last december.
Im guessing tmobile is blocking my tethering on the network end, since all blocking/tethering management software has been removed from my phone.
Any advice? If i cant tether, i cant use up all 5 gigs i pay for, so ill probably get a cheaper plan or switch to straight talk.

Yup. Looks like we both have the same problem.
Tmobile must be somehow able to detect when my computer tries to hop on their network and blocks it.

They're mainly catching you by looking at the headers of your http traffic, and assuming that http requests with desktop browser strings are coming from tethered PCs. If you change them to spoof Android's browser, T-mo can't tell the difference.
They could probe more deeply if they wanted to, but as a practical matter, they don't. If they blindly dip the net into the stream and just look for http traffic with desktop-browser identities, they can effortlessly catch 99% of the people who tether.
If you really want to hide your tethering from them, just subscribe to a PPTP VPN service like ibvpn.com. It's around $5/month (~$37 if you pay for the whole year up front), it'll TOTALLY hide what you're doing from T-Mobile (because all they'll see is an encrypted bitstream), and also comes in handy for using a wi-fi tablet with public access points (the reason *I* subscribe).
Just be careful to make sure your network connection doesn't drop while you're tethered, because there doesn't seem to be any way to tell Android, "Establish this VPN whenever there's connectivity, and DO NOT send ANY data via ANY means besides the VPN". If your connection drops, the VPN will break, and if the phone reconnects to T-Mo a half second later, it'll just silently send all network traffic going forward straight through T-Mobile until you reconnect to the VPN.

best advice ive received so far - i was wondering how they were able to tell i was tethering. so i guess ill just need a browser that supports changing of the user agent? or is it more complicated to browser spoof?

I got the same message two days ago with a prepaid account on a CM9 exhibit ii
I'm not sure just changing the ua would help though because I'm getting the redirect on my android tablet as well, not just my laptop

The headers also give them an idea if more than one unit is being serviced, ie: hotspot. Encryption hides this as well. Bottom line? They will see tethering if they look for it.

I just use Opera. It hasn't failed me yet.

I believe the tether detection works by looking at the TTL for packets. It would be more than it should be if the client is using the device as a gateway. Thing is HTTPS still works once you've been "blocked" as well a bunch of other protocols, so it looks like they are just setting a captive portal for port 80 traffic. That said, I have a Zentyal VPN set up at home on my 50mb/s line, so once tethered I VPN into my home machine which then resets my gateway on my laptop to be the gateway on the VPN machine at home. This redirects ALL traffic through the VPN effectively side stepping t-mobiles blocking altogether. So as long as they still allow any data connections over my data plan while tethering than I can access everything like normal. One positive side effect is that general browsing seems to be MUCH faster given that the traffic is really actually being downloaded from my home connection and being siphoned through the VPN rather than having the phone itself and t-mobiles crappy gateway doing all the work.

Not to mention, everything is encrypted so t-mobile cant track any of my surfing habits either. I dont know about you all, but I tend to trust my ISP a little more than my wireless carrier.

So the issue has been solved.
I can tether on tmobiles network with no issues as long as i DONT use google chrome. Safari and Firefox access webpages no problem. Chrome has a user agent string which tmobile is able to see - and block by default on their network.

I'm on Tmobile w/ my Droid 3, stock OS. I tether once in a while, only use Chrome for browsing, and I've never gotten redirected.

I was using chrome all day today. First half of the day it was fine (and every other time before this but I've only had them for less than a month), but then after I started pushing maybe a gig through netflix in addition to using chrome THEN chrome stopped working. Had to use a user agent extension to get chrome working again.
So it might be a trigger set off by data usage to THEN check for the user agent

Makes sense. TMobile doesn't appear to have refarmed Portland yet, so when I do tether, I don't end up using that much data, what with being stuck on 2G and all.

The methods employed by t-mobile to detect tethering are quite frivolous and an asinine move on their part. Their detection does not even work properly.

To fix your issue just change your user agent in IE or Firefox. If you dont know how to do that just google change Useragent for IE or firefox.

Unlimited MetroPCS/T-Mobile Tether Settings.

First off I do believe you have to have unlimited data or use a VPN App to bypass your usage restrictions. Both companies have been unlawfully cracking down on data usage and overcharging our "unlimited" plans. So, without further ado this is how I have come of maintaining true unlimited tether usage!
Here is everything I have configure thus far with MetroPCS/T-Mobile that works 35/35 Mbps.
APN Settings:
APN-fast.metropcs.com
MMSC-http://metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
MCC-310
MNC-260
APN Type-default,supl,mms,dun
APN Protocol-IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol-IPv6
Wifi Tether Router Settings:
Interface-wlan0 (or whatever your config that works)
Method-Native Tether
Check ON Keep Screen ON / Prevent Stand By / Nat Policy Alternative / Reset Default Route
Wifi Tether Router DHCP Settings:
IP Address-172.16.11.0
DNS 1-8.8.8.8
DNS 2-8.8.4.4
Next, I use Free Tethering Unlocker

Okay, so I've realized other methods have stopped working. The only method I have consistently work is the "Native Tether" option I explained previously. If the "Free Wifi Tether Unlocker" doesn't seem to help I suggest you use SQLite to modify the file: /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db, find wifi_tether_dun, click on it and change the value from 1 to 0 (some brands use "tether_entitlement_check_state" or other names, just remember the default value before you change to 0. Good luck!

SQL Table
Looking for the Tether* field in the sqlite file. I have searched manually, but cannot find it. Would you happen to know what table it is in? I looked for anything that might be related to tether but only found is_phone_provisioned.
Also FYI the link tether unlocker is 404.

my apologies, you don't necessarily need to edit the SQL database if you use the Free Tether Unlocker; supposedly it will do it for you. I guess the XDA link is 404'd but it can still be found on the Play Store located here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.kernelxp.freetether&hl=en

I have tried these settings as directed but when I try to turn on the hotspot through WiFi Tether to get internet on my notebook I have no internet connection. Any help?

I suggest rebooting your phone after you make the suggested changes, then activate the hotspot. If you could possibly tell me the error as well. While in windows left click on your wifi icon in the taskbar, then right click your connection and click "status" and then "details", from there take a screenshot of your settings so I can verify it looks correct.

I will do and get back with you. Thanks for the help. I have my own way of getting Wifi Tether to work as a hotspot but it makes my phone hot as hell and sometimes I feel like I should just get better speeds. The normal hotspot don't heat my phone like this.

I ALWAYS keep my phone plugged in, screen brightness on low or off entirely with Keep Screen ON and Prevent Standby options checked in the Wifi Tether Router App. Hope it helps!

I have followed your step minus the sql as i cannot find the table. I do not know to what extent it works but it does work for me to some extent. Hulu.com wasnt loading much but since I have windows 10 I downloaded the hulu app and it is streaming fine for me.
This is the result that I got from speedtest I do not know how good or bad this is compared to my regular tethering.
Cant post url will find an alternative
Two problems that I have encountered is one that it displays the setting set through my regular hotspot not throught the wifi tether app so I do not know if I am just using regular tethering or what also i do know that I exceeded my 8gb limit. Also I experienced the wifi going out and I would need to restart it through the app I havent configured if it works also just by re enabling the wifi in settings. I also do not know if it may be because of my screen going off.
I also changed the setting from wan0 to auto.
Some sites such as google loads extremly fast and other load slow may be the content such as flash or something I heard it could be flash I do not know if hulu runs of flash.

It is possible you need to alter your DNS settings. In the Wifi Tether Router settings go to DHCP settings and make sure your DNS is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, in my APN settings I have them both regular and roaming type set to IPv6

Same settings , i experienced 6hours plus of activity two times yesterday at a nice speed while watching hulu. App crashed once i believe after 5-6 hours and after restaring it was fine throughout the whole night.

Sometimes if you have a RAM cleaner app it will kill the process, especially if you have an unpaid for apk as well, Fabio has his app secure when it comes to piracy so I do suggest you buy it if you haven't already. It updates almost every other day and if you're outdated for some reason it will crash quite a bit.

No RAM cleaner and I also have a legit APK. The app works fine for me in general for my needs.

ok so I actually already have hotspot working,I'm just curious if this can allow me to get possibly faster and more Internet on my phone,as currently I only get 8gb of high speed hotspot available,after the 8gb it acts like 2g speeds :/

After changing apn as you instructed get the new foxfi. When you turn on hotspot click the 3 little dots and turn on proxy server...works great, still shows that small amount of tether is used, just to get connected(only like 15mb) once multiple proxy start can use many gb before even getting 100mb.

I have a iPhone will it work for iPhone.Im trying to play update a game but it takes long since I have used all my hotspot with my 60$ plan.

Does anyone have a way to employ the mobile hotspot on the Galaxy G935A? Seeing as there is no root, is there any coding or permission tweaks I can try to get the Hotspot to work?
FoxFi works with tethering, but turns up a 10246 permission error for Hotspot. I though I had it when I kept the system from checking my plan with At&t.....But eventually, the system picked up on the blocking I employed.
Two main reasons for me to root are Viper4Android, which there is not get-around. The second is the Mobile Hotspot. When I travel with my kids, they used to use my Rooted G3 to play Youtube, games, and interactive apps to keep them busy on long road trips.
My choices, buy a G935F on Ebay and root it.....but then I would have to sell my G935A.
Someone miraculously figures a way to root.
I find a work-around and change "permissions."
I'm leaning toward the new phone, just hate spending $700 on Ebay with electronics.......
Any help is appreciated, even the slap of reality to "just get the F" and quit screwing around with the A.....

Can someone help me try this? THERE ARE NO MODIFICATIONS HERE
-I opened the mobile Hotspot app, set it up while I was connected to my home wifi network.
It worked, but used my home network as the hotspot.
-Next, I shut my wifi off and expected the error, but the phone hotspot transferred to the 4g, as long as I didn't turn the hotspot off.
I also tried this at an open cafe wifi hotspot, then turned off the phone wifi again, the hotspot remained working as long as I didn't hit the back button.
* I did get a tetherprovision.apk error, but it didn't shut the phone mobile hotspot off.
I tried this on my wifes S6 Edge, but it didn't work. Can someone try the S7 and S7 edge G935A
***To make sure it was the phone hotspot, I checked ip addresses before and after the WIFI was turned off. Ip adress changed from where I live to a place in Maryland, so fairly sure it wasn't just a fluke, but that is why I need someone to test it........Thanks

I had the same challenge (unlimited data but no tether provisioning) and wanted to tether without giving up my awesome plan or pissing off my employer (my corporate plan includes international LTE roaming -- amazing!). Being unable to root and having unsuccessfully tried FoxFi (gave me an error message about internal connectivity or somesuch) I discovered Samsung already has an app for this called SideSync. It requires a USB cable but is able to set up its own hotspot.
I'm using a Mac laptop with SM-G930A and after installing SideSync on both the Mac and the phone, and launching both, I can detect the phone connection (apparently this works better when the app is running in the background but not on its home screen). Then I can click the "More" button on the Mac side and launch "Enable Mobile Hotspot". You'll need to give it MTP and several other access permissions the first time, but it should create and configure a WAP of the form "SIDESYNC_HOTSPOT_##:##" and connect the Mac to it. This works even if your phone provisioning wouldn't normally allow it. Easy!

Not sure what you mean by utilizing the same wifi connection -- It is NOT the WiFi Direct feature if that's what you mean..if the phone is connected in that mode, this will need to be turned off first. Mine handles the setup of the hotspot automatically (at least on Mac). It's a little wonky but usually works on the first try. And yes... once it's working, the phone shows that it's got a device connected via wi-fi sharing icon, and the laptop shows it's using SIDESYNC_HOTSPOT.

If figured it wasn't the Direct. It installed and loaded right up, but it disconnected on the PC side every few seconds. I think it might be my A.V. software......I'm going to mess around with it this weekend to see if that's the issue. Thanks for tips.

So sidesync is a hotspot app, must be installed on all devices that want to connect to hotspot (in this case galaxy g930a). Is this correct?

[HOW TO] Bypass Hotspot 600k Throttle

How to bypass hotspot Throttle Confirmed working. Update 12/19/2017
For anyone wanting to use Unlimited data on a PC or Laptop "because we the people shall take BACK control of net Neutrality by Force"
1. Download your favorite VPN. Make sure it has a RELIABLE network Lock. (Vypevpn, ExpressVPN seem to work)
2. Go to regedit, and change default TTL to 65. (google this)
3. Disable IPV6 on wifi adaptor.
4. Reboot PC.
5. Reset hotspot, reconnect, then enjoy "true unlimited" on America's Largest throttled network.
For those that have a rooted Android tablet or other device: (vpn isn't required.)
1. Change TTL to 65
2. Disable IPv6 on lan0 interface (most devices).
Side note: You must setup network lock in VPN and have it enabled at all times, and you must not use any data/internet without vpn otherwise Verizon may detect the connected PC as tethering. If this happens, disable/re-enable wifi adapter or hotspot and retry. You may need to reset hotspot after install and setup of VPN. You can reset either the hotspot or the adaptor both seem to work.

It seems you have to have all these going, as Verizon is using a variety of DPI, to detect tethering. They are inspecting TTL hops, sniffing packets, as well as checking browser headers and ip's being accessed. This is why these methods of hiding tether usage is required. Verizon is also throttling Instagram, and a few other non video streaming sites i have discovered.
Now to add, I recommend if you are actually gaming, and VPN performance is bad, feel free to disconnect the vpn and make sure the internet is set as metered connection in Win 10. Although the Throttle will kick in, your latency will be low and your gaming will likely be better, as gaming typically little bandwidth. If you are downloading huge patches, torrenting, netflix etc. then use the throttle bypass method.
I will post a youtube video soon on how to bypass. It seems any VPN that has a fallback network lock works fine.
*Verizon has been confirmed to block: Samsung Cloud
*Verizon has been confirmed to throttle: Netflix, Youtube, Instagram.

Update. I figured out how to bypass it. They are tracking hotspot by TTL. I will upload a guide on how to fix it to bypass TTL.

I don't think they only track it using TTL, though I wish it were that easy. They utilize multiple methods for detection, including a type of deep packet analysis. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on this though, as in, where you planned on taking this in order to bypass TTL detection. I've been working on a little project myself, though it's still a cluster of theoretical data I have compiled and a few scripts written in hopes of bypassing throttles.

Hi, it seems like the 600k throttling is intermittent. I changed my ttl to 65 on pc and it seemed to have worked, now I'm slowed again. I also noticed that the throttling only happens after a couple of minutes after a device connects to my hotspot, not immediately. I saw this when streaming YouTube on a tablet. I am thinking it's not at the device level, and there is something other than ttl or even packet inspection.

No, that's the deep packet inspection doing it's job. Do you happen to be rooted? If so, you can add net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to your build.prop, which may or may not help. If I recall, you may be able to add it using adb without root as well.
There is another way that it may work, but it's far more complex. It requires you running an ssh server and a vpn, I haven't tinkered with it myself, but I'm familiar with networking and quite certain this would be the way to go if you're up to the challenge. I recall a few people on reddit discussing it (maybe in the r/hacking sub?), if you wanted to look around on how to accomplish this. I'm on mobile or I'd find some links for ya, but depending on how tech savvy you are, it's not too complicated (though it's much easier to accomplish on a linux distro).

Im interested in this as well. It has killed my internet usage at home. Please update us with a way to bypass this.

Ok guys so far I have a temporary working solution on Verizon wireless. I am unsure how long it will last. I am running airvpn over port 2048 udp no ssl or shh. With a ttl of 65 in windows Registry. It seems almost as if they are checking if multiple devices are hitting the same IP. I have been running YouTube full 1080 on throttled hotspot for an hour. It seems that they are doing deep packet inspection on their end because my device is not rooted and unlocked stock s8+.

If anyone can try the same setup (make sure your VPN is running on a different port,) I will probably get a router to host VPN on. Even better would be if it were possible to funnel all VPN traffic including hotspot through the same tunnel on Android.
Edit confirmed working hotspot unthrottled on port 2018.
Time to get the word out. I'm going to post a guide soon.

Great. A guide would be perfect with this because I'm not sure how you managed all of that. That and the only PC I have is a work PC. Let us know when the guide is up.

I don't think you can bypass our throttle lol. I've tried a few things myself.

I wonder if this method works for tmobile.

I'm not sure about hotspot, the TTL hack seems to be hit or miss, but I have been bypassing throttle on tether with FoxFi. I know, I know, people have said it doesn't work on Nougat, well I tried it anyway and have unthrottled speeds, using QH3 unlocked stock firmware and Windows 10.

Check the xda T-Mobile forum, I believe they have an unthrottled method already, one of the easier ones I've seen.

Okay, so I found a way to bypass the throttle (sort of) on my home PC. I purchased samsung dex, and connected my monitor and sound system. Now i can Netflix, surf, trade and download all I want. Not a total solution, but for now, its pretty usable (except for gaming). F U Verizon and all USA carriers.

Those are the details, though I'm not sure how or why the Dex would help bypass the data usage.

Because, its not tethering. Its the actual phone running the Monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers. The new generation of Computing baby.

I figured it out...sorta. USB tether via PDANET registered so not crippled to PC. That connection is 'shared' with the normal LAN. That cable is moved to the 'Internet' port on my router so it can feed other devices. So the PC is the middleman here so to speak.

Can you explain this to someone who is computer literate, but completely phone/networking illiterate? For example, I'm not sure what you mean by "via PDANET registered." I've never tethered before either, but I've seen that as an option when I plug USB into my computer, so I think I can figure that out at least.
I'm stuck in a hotel for a month for training for my work and the hotel internet is awful (only .2 down) so I decided to pay up for Verizon's unlimited data plan and hotspot it, but now I've hit the ridiculous 600k throttle.
For the record, I have with me my laptop running Windows 10, and my phone is a Samsung Galaxy S6 (purchased at a Verizon store).
The worst part is I was really hoping for an ethernet port in this hotel room but there isn't one unfortunately.
Edit: Just realized this is under Galaxy S8+... My mistake, I found this thread via a google search. Not sure if you can help me or not since my phones an S6, but would still appreciate any and all help.

Hotspot hack note 8 oreo

So I manually updated my note 8 to oreo on Verizon note and the hack for hotspot doesn't work anymore. Has anyone found a way? I been trying different things to see if I can find a way but no luck so far.

Did you happen to try FoxFi to see if it would work? Also I think there is a direct WiFi way to connect with FoxFi that's new. You might try that. Let us know. I'm holding off until I know I can use the hotspot. I'm not sure if you can upgrade to Oreo unlocked version and get around Verizon's hotspot limitation.

Pdanet+ has wifi direct and it does work! I can confirm wifi direct works on mac.

Yea I updated also not thinking ab it and now I'm screwed.

Use pdanet+ and use wifi direct, it works fine, just have to change settings that's all. Hopefully something will come up coz I don't see any other android update coming anytime soon to note 8.

Another +1 for pdanet+ and wifi direct. requires the windows app but works like a charm - happy to have it back.

I tried bt I don't see how it works I guess. U have to have pdanet installed on wutever ur trying to connect to smart TV laptop etc. Maybe if I could sideload the apk on my smart TV bt other than that looks like it's only for computers and tablets

What is the SIM popping trick because, I am trying to avoid using Odin to revert back to Nougat OS?

Start with wifi off. Eject your SIM card (you don’t have to pull the tray all the way out). This should take you to your lock screen. Unlock your phone. Go to settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot & Tethering.
Here’s the tricky part... You have to pop the SIM back in and click the hotspot button quickly. You might get a message that pops up telling you “insert a SIM to turn on tethering” or something. If you get that, click “OK” to make it go away and click the hotspot button again.
Last thing, have a device ready to connect to your hotspot because it will time out and automatically turn the hotspot off.

Thanks....Work like a charm once I realized I had to go re-enable the two tether apps that I had turned off via BK Disabler app from the Nougat hotspot hack.

If you use pdanet+ and wifi direct, do you need to check the box that says "Hide Tether Usage"? I assume that let's you tether without VZW knowing it's tethered data and thinking it's just normal cell data usage? Does it actually work? Would be useful when I'm nearing close to my 15 GB tethering limit.

I have been using Foxfi. 1st, I enable my native hotspot then turn it on in Foxfi and configure the password and name to the same as the phone and set the proxy. Next go to pdanet+ and tick hide tethering. Then I update the apn settings and add dun to the configuration. I have the SM-N950U cre1 baseband on metro pcs. Unlimited plan with a cycle from the 8th-7th. According to the my metro app I've used 3.4G of data and 165mb out of 10G hotspot since the 8th. The phone says I've use 5G of data but doesn't tell me the usage on mobile hotspot. I can say I usually have 2-3 devices and a laptop using the hotspot.
