I'm lucky enough to have multiple Inc's I can compare side-by-side. This week, I took the time to test-drive a few Kernels.
My goal is to find the (1) most stable, (2) best performing w/good battery life. Basically undervolt kernel testing.
Unfortunately, I really can't find much difference between these popular variants.
The battery life seems to be roughly equal on all of them, as does the stability (barring IcrediKernel, which had some issues in my testing with SkyRaider).
I tested (all current versions as of 1/10/2011):
* Redemptive with Lou's included kernel
* SkyRaider Sense with Ziggy's kernel
* SkyRaider Sense with KingX kernel
* SkyRaider Sense with Incredi kernel
KingX #6 scores almost 100 better than the next best in Quadrant. However, outside of that, I cannot really discern a major difference.
KingX seems to have the most significant changes in his changelog. Ziggy also seems to be brilliant, and yet, I really don't see any real differences between the kernels once implemented on my phone.
Can anyone help me isolate the differences -- perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place? I've basically tried to use everything I can think of, on the phone -- using each kernel, and tested all of them in power-save mode, tethered, etc.

Sure, of course. I'm familiar with the stock answer to the "which kernel is better" post.
That being said, I was asking something a bit different. I've *been* testing the kernels. The point of my post was to suggest that I cannot discern the difference after spending several hours with them.
With that in mind, I was asking if there is something specific I should be looking for, since I haven't found it (not with battery life, performance, or stability -- not with what I'm testing presently anyway).
Although, in addition to my original question -- of where to look to seek differences ... you do bring up another good point -- why is it that different phones (assuming they are the *same* model/android/radio version -- eg OLED 2.2's), would perform differently with identical kernels?
A few hours is not enough testing time for kernels. You need atleast a full charge down to 0 with a kernel to see how good the battery life is. Also, to judge the performance, you'll need a little more time for that too. Each phone is different. Some processors can take lesser voltages, high clocks than others. I'm not sure why this is, but it is. Honestly, I'm sure all the kernels are very good because the devs are excellent. But, some just work well for others while the same one doesn't for someone else. As I said before, just test out a kernel for a day or two, see how you like each one, and stay with it. If you battery life is being affected greatly, or your phone runs too hot or something, then switch to a different one.
At this point, I have more than 3 days or more on the following kernels:
* Redemptive with Lou's included kernel (3 days)
* SkyRaider Sense with KingX kernel (3 days)
* SkyRaider Sense with Ziggy's kernel (14 days)
* SkyRaider Sense with Stock kernel (22 days)
(Incredi -- I only had about 4 hours over two tests/loads and re-flashed, due to problems)
I've never run my batteries down to zero as you've mentioned. I've run them down to 10-20% on rare occasion.
In essence, what you are saying is that there really is nothing specific to keep an eye out for? If I don't see an obvious difference somewhere, there is no significant difference between the 4 kernels I have listed above? And Quadrant is of no help ... so in short, if they all get the same battery life, I just just pick one randomly?
I just want to believe there must be a more scientific/objective way of evaluating these kernels relative of each other.
if they are all pretty much the same to you, pick the one that makes you happy and that feels like it has the best performance and battery life. Maybe ask one of the devs about some scientific way of how each kernel is different from each other.
The problem is that I've built an app that our company uses over 18 phones that get run 9 hours a day, and the DInc's were overheating.
I went to Skyraider w/stock kernel, and that seemed to address the problem, at least it appears to reboot much less than the stock DInc's.
However, since I've made the commitment/risk of rooting/flashing these phones, I'd like to find some systematic method to determine which is the most efficient kernel to use, considering I have 18 phones in-the-field.
As a software engineer/empiricist, I'm not good at accepting the logic of "if it works, it's good enough". And so my objective is to find someone that may have some additional perspectives beyond that.
If there is a developer who sees this, I'd very much appreciate any information you can provide on how your kernel differs from others. Or someone who has some additional information.

Hi! One thing that affects performance is SD Card Read Speeds. Ziggy and Incredi have an improved read speed, I just tested both and got 12mb/sec read with a class 4 card. Since HTC released FroYo Android 2.2 for our phone, they implemented a read speed limit of four MB/sec for the SD card. I just tested Lou and King and got read speeds of 4mb/sec from the SD card. All Fourkernels I got a write speed of 4 mb/sec.
Other major differences I think worth mentioning are that Ziggy includes a hosts file to block connections to advertising servers. But of course installing a different kernel leaves the new host file in place. Multi touch, I love the piano and playing games so this matters to me. Ziggy has had a 5 point multi touch enabled for some time. Lou & incredi have implemented in a different way. I am not the one to explain the differences. Lou turned it on for up to five multi touch points(but disabled it in his last build). Incredi had enabled all ten multi touch points but is now also at 5. Debugging. Lou disabled debugging so apps that rely on it will not work. Ex.... PDAnet. Lou did have wireless N disabled, he said he felt due to the minor network speed increase it was not worth the extra battery usage. But reading his change log I see it has since been re enabled.
Which one is best for you? It really does depend on too many factors to say outright. Depending on the apps you have installed, and apps you use the most. I listen to music a lot. Using one that lowers clock speed a bunchwhen the screen is off makes themusic skip. In theory you will get better battery life, but imo, its not worth sacrificing that usability.
Please correct me if I am wrong, mis informed, or steering peoples wrong. I hope this helps to understand some differences.
Overheating. It seems that the consensus is that the 9.01 radio works best for most people. Not me. The 9.01 version makes my phone get very hot. I use the 7.28 radio and it makes a big difference in my phone not getting hot.
What issues did you have with the incredi that made you have to abandon it so quickly?

I've been wondering pretty much the same thing, and I have been reading the different changelogs from the respective kernels to find the differences between them. Thanks to you thehoovie for a good explaination, you put to light some things I have been wondering. Very good explaination!
With that said, what has worked best for me, is RR 2.1.3 with Ziggy's new kernel (BFS Jan 2 2011). I get great battery, I can control the freqs the proccessor is at all the way down to 128mhz, the system is very stable, and have had no problems what so ever. I get roughly 2 days out of a full charge with moderate use on a 1350 battery!

I did not include Incredi in the title, because I had problems with it (mentioned in first post). To answer your question, there were two things. One more subtle, that I don't remember off-hand -- and the other, was with downloading from the Internet. I had installed twice, on a SkyRaider ROM, and in both events, Incredi would hang when downloading.
I distribute all of our private, in-house software releases through our website. So not being able to download from the web in my testing .. was a deal killer!
Our users take roughly 900 photos a day, on average. Therefore, SD speed is extremely important, and I never would have tested the differences between kernels. This is exactly the type of feedback I was hoping to find -- in other words, I was not asking "which is best for me", but instead "can someone help me know where to look for differences in performance". Your comment on SD, is a perfect example of such a factor, thank you!
...Does anyone else have any suggestions, beyond SD performance and battery life, as to other factors for comparison/testing?

I cannot imagine getting two days on a 1350mah, this would be amazing! I'm running off to test your suggestion (RR + Ziggy's) now. Just one question: where do you set the CPU frequencies using that RR+Ziggy configuration?
EDIT: I just tested SkyRaider + Ziggy's #15, and it seems to be running very good. Ziggy's #15 also uses a low-power Bluetooth driver, which will be a huge help for us (we use BT to communicate between DInc's and gTablets in our app).

Have people been moving away from these Sense ROM's to CM7/Gingerbread, and if so, any feedback on stability?
I keep reading about CM7 adoptions and it's starting to make me wonder if I should give the new Gingerbread version a try.
I have not tested CM since v6 about 45 days ago, but at that point, there were some issues on the DInc.
Suggestion:
1. turn off wifi.
2. turn on gps
Launch Last.fm or pandora - stream your favorite music station.
Launch navigation, Navigate somewhere.. (I actually do this.. I just use gps when I am out running errands for an hour or so)
See how long the following lasts:
1. Battery
2. Time without crashing
That's been my simple testing of kernels. This is not scientific.. its just real world testing IMO
I am currently playing with Lou's #4 vs #8 on the same rom.. I think testing on multiple roms would bring in more factors you cant control.
#4 crashes way too often when running navigation (its fine for day to day use though)
been using Lous #8 on SR3.5 and it blew me away with battery life as well as performance. I flashed #9 yesterday and am gonna give it a day or two before i judge it. I had previously used Chad's and Hydra. Chad's wasnt the best and hyrda was great for OC performance but not for battery life.

I just wanted to ask does the custom roms really worth rooting? in comparison to the google stock rom how much faster and more battery efficient are the custom rom that specialize in those fields? (i.e. LiquidSmooth from what I could gather) and how much more/less stable are they from the stock rom?

Experience differs from user to user. The most conclusive way to get an answer is to try it out yourself. For me, PA has been just as fast as the stock ROM and had equally good battery life, but I have had the occasional random reboot. To me that's a miniscule trade-off for the features you get. You won't really get a ROM that's significantly faster than a stock ROM though because the hardware on the phone is good enough that everything feels fast.

I would recommend you try both and stick with the one that works best for you. Only you can determine which one you like more. The N4 is easy to install a custom rom on (even from stock). Plus with the backup apps out there you don't have to risk losing your data and starting over. No two users are identical and what works for one may not work for another.
For what it's worth, I've flashed back to stock/locked/unrooted because I never came to depend on the features the different roms gave me. I'm getting older and don't have the time to stay current on the different roms and features. All I need for my phone are apps/features that are found in the stock rom and the google store. Battery life is better on a custom rom but it's not worth it to me to continue my "flashaholic" ways. I still get through a day sometimes a day and a half on the stock rom - which is all I need. My use case could be drastically different than yours so don't do what I did unless you know it will work for you.
The developers here do great work and it's a great community so I would recommend you try them all to see which one you like the most.

its not about me testing for myself because i'm not looking for features or special stuff i can get along with everything i'm really just looking for the fastest most battery saving ROM, thats it, I play little to almost no games basicly mail and scanning and stuff like that(i'm a student right now) and soon i'll be writing some apps for myself for security purposes so I need something to really milk that Quad Core for all its worth so I also need some CPU tweaking apps(not sure if thats ROM related)
You'll be very happy with Sabermod or Rasbean both close to stock. Sabermod is the only Rom built using the 4.8 chaintool and is very fast. The battery life is also excellent. I recommend those 2 for a close to stock experience with some useful tweaks both fast smooth and solid.

and by the way, excuse my ignorance but what does it mean 4.8 chaintool? what makes it faster then the 4.7 or the older ones? and since its really new im guessing, does it mean its less stable then the other ROMS? and when you say excellent battery life, its in comparison to all those other ROMS that aim for max battery life?

If you really want more battery life or smoothness then IMO you should just install a new kernel; Franco's kernel has great battery life but it still has better performance than stock, Trinity kernel is super fast and smooth, and there's loads more options available.
I'm running CM10.1 and Franco kernel and its very stable, barely ever have any sort of bugs or random reboots

I run CM10.1. Close to stock, but has a few options that are nice to have especially if you like to customize your phone. There are other Roms that have more options, but to me, what's in CM is enough. It's really up to you.
With that being said, I recently flashed a stock rooted rom and got MUCH better battery life than on CM. I don't know if it was an app I had or what, but stock definitely gave me better battery life. I have tried kernels and Rom combinations, but always come back to CM with every single phone I've had. But, in my experience on the Nexus 4, stock Rom gives me the best battery life.
For me liquidsmooth is brilliant! Extremely fast while having tons of customization options. Pair it with matr1x and it really is a great combo for speed and battery life. This is only my opinion but it works for me. I got over 22000 on antutu with this combination (no overclock) while I think its around 17000 on stock. I also get significantly better battery life compared to stock.
if you really want a bump in battery and performance, i suggest rooting and just install francos kernel.i've tried every rom on this forum and for me i ALWAYS find my way back to stock for me it just feels the most fluid and everything works like it should. like me you dont play games or anything and im no app hoarder.that said stock rom with francos kernel gives me the best of everything including color/gamma tweaks to make your screen look better with his app.
with that said i suggest to check out different kernels

Updates in any form will show up in the forum and no need to simply rely on Google for them. They have recently released an updated kernel which I see being implemented by some rom developers and kernel developers already. Let's understand what we have here guys, a community of constant building additions/updates to our phones. So updates should be the last thing for you to worry about IMO
Also to me OP some of the questions you asked can all be answered with a simple Google Search, not that the answers given here are wrong but you would probably find more in depth and uniformed answers by looking it up.. Quite sure its on a wiki somewhere...

I believe he means Google ota's and yes it can stop you from getting ota's. Any modification to system. Whether you added or removed something will fail. You would have to be on complete stock for it to work. Just download yourself a nexus 4 toolkit. The latest factory image, latest drivers, and make sure you backup your internal storage on your computer. Use the tool to return your phone back to stock. Of course whenever you feel is tge right time to do so.

Oh no I fully understood what he meant and my point was simply people unroot or stay stock to wait for an update. Whether you are rooted or not the update will find you in some form. Either with a rooted stock rom or a custom rom but rest assure that xda will not let an update happen and its not on everyone's phone :good:

I have had my OPO for a couple years now. I must admit I freaking love this phone. It's been fast and reliable since the first boot. It fits my life-style perfectly. I have been fortunate to have not been plagued with any of the common OPO issues. No yellow screen, battery issues, software glitches, etc.
With that being said, I have the bar set pretty high right now. However, It is not in my nature to leave cool tech equipment in it's original condition. I am ready to make a move on my OPO.
I rolled though the TOP ROMS thread and nothing really stuck out or grabbed my attention. I'm seeking a path to success here and was looking for some recommendations from experienced users that have had and experimented with multiple roms and use the OPO for more than pictures and facebook. I run 2 businesses and this phone is a staple in my life.
If I could only change one thing from stock, it would definitely be the DPI. I find 400 to be the best for my use, with font still readable but lots more screen space.
In terms of roms, I would recommend Resurrection Remix. Very reliable with pretty much every feature you could want but without the performance hit that others have.
For a business user though, you would need a solid backup and recovery method for when your modding eventually ends up with a bootloop. I have heard that flashfire is pretty good but, as my phone is too full to make a backup, I have not used it myself.
Sultans rom is unique because instead of adding features (its same as stock rom) he's actually gone deeper and improved the camera, battery gauge and other things. Read everything on his post that he's made better. His rom is at 2ghz instead of 2.5ghz YET it performs better than stock ever did.

I would suggest you try out CandySix ROM (AOSP + Sultan's kernel), it's the best ROM I've tried so far. Full set of features, stable and great battery life. No idea what happens with CM ROMs including Sultan's but I am plagued with core apps and Android OS wakelocks that destroy battery.
If you want a simple AOSP ROM without a ton of features but rock stable I'd suggest Omni.

I run my resolution at 440 with small text. I've played around with that quite a bit, I've been pleased with the current for a while now. You're 100% correct about the backup and recovery. That is going to be my first step. I'll check out flashfire and see what that's about.

My plan here is to give each selected ROM 10 days of run time and track important features. At the end I'll probably write a review with my feedback. I'll add these two, to the list.

I am currently very interested how different CustomRoms for the Axon 7 compare to each other, but I don`t have the time to flash all of them at the moment...
So I would love to hear YOUR experiences you have made with different CustomRoms on your device! I`m mostly interested in:
- Stability (possible daily driver on my main phone)
- Support (community, defs, QAs)
- Batterylife
- Sound
- Performance
- Updates? (OTA?, regularly? , etc)
- "Standard features (phone, GPS, bluetooth ...) working or not?
- Advanced features (Substratum (Customization), etc.)
- What do you love?
- What do you hate?
- Would you recommend it?

As I would love to have a Rom which is able to run Substratum well, I`m mostly interested in Roms like RR, NucleaRom, AOSPextended .... feel free to add more to the list and also feel invited to write of whichever Rom you are using, whether or not it is supporting Substratum.
I will start with my personal experience:

Overall I was pretty happy with this ROM
Was stable enough for me (a random reboot every 2 to 3 days)
I think it`s definitly the most supported ROM (huge community and very active devs...), you usually get help pretty fast, whenever you need it! (thanks guys)
Batterylife wasn`t extraordinary, but it got me through the day, which is kinda enough... but I`d love more.
Sound was pretty good, ever since the speaker-fix, I personally liked the AudioFX-App. I`m not sure if LOS takes full advantage of the DAC though.
Performance was good, only thing bothering me: sometimes apps disappeared off my recents
Updates worked really well, ever after starting to use LineageDownloader (I do recommend this app when using LOS)! Very frequent updates (weekly!) that`s how I like it
Had no issues with calls and every other "normal" task I`d throw at my phone
Substratum is sadly not supported, which made me move on other than that LineageOS doesn`t have as many special features I`m aware of, it`s clean, stable but not the most customizable
I loved the barebone google approach with very small addons.
I hated nothing really, but overall I kinda want more possibilities to customize my phone
I would personally recommend it to everyone who wants a working alternative to Stock Axon7 Rom and who doesn`t need all that many crazy options, but an overall very different and in my opinion preferable look and feel (when compared to stock MiFavor) I would also recommend it to everyone starting to experiment with customRoms.

So I moved to this puppy because I really wanted to try out an all Black SubstratumTheme, and see what else a ROM might have to offer.... (and cuz it was recommended to me by a very nice guy (I don`t mind mentioning the name, but I don`t dare to )
Stability is great, as long as my device`s screen is turned on. But whenever my screen turns off, I get an immediate reboot, which is very annoying and makes it kinda not suited to be used as a daily driver.
However the Support is pretty good for a (compared to LOS for example) very small Dev-Team and community! I posted my issue with NucleaROM and the Dev responded very quickly telling me that it will be adressed with the next update -> props for that! However especially the community support is of course inferior to LOS (since far less people know and Use NucleaROM).
So far I can`t really do real life battery tests, since I`m currently using my phone with screen on for hours to then turn it off completely and reboot it when I need it again (to avoid the bug mentioned above). But I feel like Batterylife with an all black substratum theme on AMOLED is quite nice!
Sound is awesome (for me) probably the same as on LOS (but it feels a bit better to me :`) )
Performance is good so far as well.... I flashed the rom and didn`t notice the reboot-bug for over 3 hours, since everything was running so well I didn`t even turn off my screen and no random reboots happened in that time.... but when I wanted to sleep the reboot madness (I turned the screen off) started ^^ but when the screen is on, I`m very pleased with the performance!
Updates don`t look as good on this ROM. There is no OTA support and updates don`t seem to come that frequently (which is very understandable if you take the small dev team in account, which are doing all the work mainly in their freetime!!) but if you want weekly updates and OTAs then this won`t be the ROM for you probably.
Standard features seem to mostly work, apart from phone calls :/ (since when I hold the phone to my ear -> the screen turns off -> reboot ^^) and when I`m trying to use the speakers of the phone I`m having issues hearing the other person... so sometimes it works, but only after turning it on and off for a seemingly random amount of time...
Special features: this is definitely a huge stepup from LOS (this ROM includes pretty much everything I missed so far on LOS) Substratum is ther and working very well for me, I love the additional settings and options this ROM gives and even though it`s not important I absolutely dig the Boot-animation for some reason!
I love the feel, options and smoothness of this ROM!
I hate the reboot-bug (will update as soon as it is fixed!) and the calling issues.
For now I can`t recommend it as a daily driver, but if you are willing to experiment and either don`t depend that much on your phone or have a second one, than you could or should give this ROM a try and find out if it`s also as appealing to you as it is for me! You should definitly follow the development of this ROM though, since I feel like it has a whole lot of potential!! Fingers crossed I can use it as my daily soon!

As I would love to have a Rom which is able to run Substratum well, I`m mostly interested in Roms like RR, NucleaRom, AOSPextended .... feel free to add more to the list and also feel invited to write of whichever Rom you are using, whether or not it is supporting Substratum.
I will start with my personal experience:

Overall I was pretty happy with this ROM
Was stable enough for me (a random reboot every 2 to 3 days)
I think it`s definitly the most supported ROM (huge community and very active devs...), you usually get help pretty fast, whenever you need it! (thanks guys)
Batterylife wasn`t extraordinary, but it got me through the day, which is kinda enough... but I`d love more.
Sound was pretty good, ever since the speaker-fix, I personally liked the AudioFX-App. I`m not sure if LOS takes full advantage of the DAC though.
Performance was good, only thing bothering me: sometimes apps disappeared off my recents
Updates worked really well, ever after starting to use LineageDownloader (I do recommend this app when using LOS)! Very frequent updates (weekly!) that`s how I like it
Had no issues with calls and every other "normal" task I`d throw at my phone
Substratum is sadly not supported, which made me move on other than that LineageOS doesn`t have as many special features I`m aware of, it`s clean, stable but not the most customizable
I loved the barebone google approach with very small addons.
I hated nothing really, but overall I kinda want more possibilities to customize my phone
I would personally recommend it to everyone who wants a working alternative to Stock Axon7 Rom and who doesn`t need all that many crazy options, but an overall very different and in my opinion preferable look and feel (when compared to stock MiFavor) I would also recommend it to everyone starting to experiment with customRoms.

So I moved to this puppy because I really wanted to try out an all Black SubstratumTheme, and see what else a ROM might have to offer.... (and cuz it was recommended to me by a very nice guy (I don`t mind mentioning the name, but I don`t dare to )
Stability is great, as long as my device`s screen is turned on. But whenever my screen turns off, I get an immediate reboot, which is very annoying and makes it kinda not suited to be used as a daily driver.
However the Support is pretty good for a (compared to LOS for example) very small Dev-Team and community! I posted my issue with NucleaROM and the Dev responded very quickly telling me that it will be adressed with the next update -> props for that! However especially the community support is of course inferior to LOS (since far less people know and Use NucleaROM).
So far I can`t really do real life battery tests, since I`m currently using my phone with screen on for hours to then turn it off completely and reboot it when I need it again (to avoid the bug mentioned above). But I feel like Batterylife with an all black substratum theme on AMOLED is quite nice!
Sound is awesome (for me) probably the same as on LOS (but it feels a bit better to me :`) )

I personally use the unofficial one since it's getting updated daily, and I can update whenever I feel like it.
You should ask someone else about AOSP extended I don't have much experience with it.
I just recommended RR because I had been using it on many devices I owned flawlessly and it's one of the most balanced and complete (if not the most balanced and complete) ROM out there.
I only use aosp extended and LOS, both are decent, aosp I think have better battery life, and better performance overall, no bugs I can find, the only problem is for me the camera app, in all customs, quality sucks, are uncomfortable, and flashable stock dont work as in stock rom, so, I use stock rom...
but in general, If you are not a camera dependant user, aosp extended is an excellent rom, better than stock, with better battery life.
I noticed stock drains a lot of battery with low signal, the others dont do it
stock have 2 bugs that any other dont... (phone wakes up with proximity covered / whatsapp reports online with app in background)
Im not a fan of cellphone photos, for that I use a real reflex camera, but I use a lot for record work to do, tons of videos driving in the car to budget works in the field and city, so I need a good camera to do this... I pass one time for the site and then review any time in the video... customs roms get worse video
Do you have Stock or Custom Rom and why?
The vendor firmware landscape has been increasingly adequate for quite some time, providing multiple viable options for a satisfactory mobile experience - buying a device with the intention to separate from its out of the box experience as much as possible no longer makes a compelling case against the unique, and sometimes identity-forming, features provided as stock.
During earlier years, Android, and mobile firmware in general, was controlled by regulations and risks while expanding an entirely new platform. There is no alternative otherwise, and anything less conservative would border reckless abandon.
This paved the way for many enthusiasts under no control to have immersed themselves into the technology like the career engineers and developers were doing, but with the nearly full freedom to test ambitious ideas and solutions unlike their professional peers, who were often limited to free time and with no expectation of something even as simple as maintaining a message board OP exploring those ideas.
This allowed many of those ideas to manifest and be thoroughly tested by many and with an unmatched diversity of real-world usages and trending philosophies. This is when many projects helped form several of the early features unique to the Android platform, absorbing a substantial portion of the risks without fear of retribution, allowing the vendors to devote more time to polish and fine-tuning and less time devoted to brainstorming ideas and risk scenarios.
This afforded the hobbyists a custom platform having quite the head start and that could distance itself from the vendor experience in features, accessibility, and form.
Custom rom's had a different identity then than custom rom's do now, and that is with good reason as well.
Ignoring the few debatable exceptions, custom rom's are currently little more than variations or slight modifications of vendor firmware or AOSP. I exclude CM/LOS simply because CM was among the hobbyists described earlier.
With the feature gap as narrow as it currently is with Mr. Rom Dev and Mr. Lead Software Engineer, the professionals now enjoy an edge with often unlimited resources available providing an experience that is hard to match or exceed with limited time and resources, so users today understandably gravitate towards the familiar vendor experience with a manageable number of features or tweaks.
Of course, even in a market of no stock, consumer demand still determines the custom software landscape.
The benefit today is that ideas and solutions require an extraordinary amount of ingenuity and progressive thinking to stand out and enjoy active development for more than six months. The breakthroughs are far fewer but they are also more impactful in pushing the platform forward.
Having said all that, my purpose for exclusive use of vendor firmware is for hobbyist development reasons. I see no benefit a custom rom would provide for development. I mean, if it works, great. But, if it works only because of the rom, you have essentially prepared something to share among a fraction of one device's users.
If something fails to implement into the vendor firmware, I move on to something else. If it works great for some custom rom's, "Cool, man!", if not, a user has the choice to use the only firmware a developer could logically assume is in use.
So, put gh down for Stock! :good:

I use xXx NoLimits: a stock-based custom ROM. It meets all of my needs. Therefore, I have no reasons to try anything else.

I'm getting 10-12 hours of screen on time and idle time is about .3-.6% drain let hour on stock on OOS. There isn't anything custom out there giving anything better.

Haven't seen anything better or much better then THIS.

Stock firmware does not necessarily need to remain "untouched".
Perhaps, a more accurate answer would be that my preference for a foundation on which to tailor to my specific needs is the stock OxygenOS firmware. It is certainly rare for users with root access to refrain from making a single change to the installed rom, be it custom or stock. :good:
With this phone it is the first time I've had to come to accept that stock is king, no custom rom compares to it, I've tried them all (yes this is subjective). Stock + a custom kernel + viper4arise and off I go.
I dont know if you count it as stock or custom since it is both but i use HydrogenOS and my own modification of its stock kernel. Im used to 9 hours SoT+ with .2% standby drain per hour. No performance sacrificed. Ill vote in the poll once u verify which u factor hydrogen os as.

ok can you provide more insight? how you get it done......i average about 4-5.5 hours sot over two days........idle drain at1.33 and active at 12.55.
How I get it done? Everyone uses the phone differently, have different apps installed, etc.
Last few days I have used Wi-Fi 99% of the time, always on, Facebook, IG, Tapatalk (a lot), Gmail, Movies HD (a lot), Terrarium-tv (a lot), YouTube, a couple calls and sms here and there, but not much, Messenger, Chrome and app-like-Spotify with bluetooth on the car. I turn on location and bluetooth only when I need it.
Auto brightness is on, always on the low side, dark theme on, turned off vibration on touch (because of the double vibration bug in Oreo), turned vibration of on keyboard touch too (have sound on instead, I like the type writer sound when I type).
Let me see, I do have privacy fix module and sysconfig patcher installed on Magisk. This last one might gave you a boost in battery, but to be honest I don't even know if it actually works.
I would say that having a dark theme, screen brightness on the low side, and not having EVERYTHING turned on all the time are what makes the difference for me. I'm sure if I have bluetooth and location on, for example, all the time, when not needed it, it will cut a my time quite a bit.
Oh, I have notice that talking on the phone takes a lot battery. I don't talk that much on the phone, just those quick 30s-5m calls to ask a quick question or whatever.
I had great battery life out of the box with Nougat, but Oreo really made a huge difference. I'm talking about 2-3h of SoT on Oreo compared to Nougat.

Finn the moment the phone I get breathes it's getting a custom ROM.

For a device like OnePlus 5, a custom ROM isn't really needed since the stock ROM is pretty much debloated and already offers a bunch of features.
Custom ROMs still offer many more features than any stock ROM though. They also get faster updates and for far longer. By the time OnePlus stopped providing updates to this device, custom ROMs will still be updated most probably.
I haven't flashed any custom ROM yet because the stock ROM has almost everything I need. The main reason I flashed ROMs was performance. The OnePlus 5 isn't lacking in this area.
Pure fusion, the Nougat version. It's the smoothest of all ROMs that I tried, has lots of settings and supports stock camera.
Codename Phoenix. Oreo 8.1, Very few bugs and for me a lot better than Stock. From the same dev making Pure Fusion.

How a custom kernel can help? I installed bluspark but i dont see additional settings.. How to make us of it?

Totally subjective and IMHO completely not true, you are hindered without root and without the ability to alter your phone in a positive way, not only for longevity of battery life but also in regards to performance, stability and stamina.
Stock does not compare to custom in any way for me.
Optimized custom rom could be great when the device is old, and no more supported.
Also, back in the days, let say with Gingerbread 2.3.x, not much nice/modded feature were present. Now, from what I can see, stock roms got almost everything.
OP5 is so fast rigt now, even if stock is heavier, we won't see much difference with a lighter rom.
But looking forward for custom roms in 2-3 years.
