I took out my old Note 3 to upgrade the Lineage OS firmware to latest version and start using it.
I made a nandroid backup of whatever old OS firmware was inside.
Downloaded the latest Lineage OS firmware & gapps and then flashed them via TWRP.
When the phone boots up the first time, it keeps giving me "Google Services framework" error constantly. If I tap cancel on that error, it pops up right 0.5 seconds later. I am unable to proceed forward in the initial setup because that error keeps popping up.
I then tried to factory reset and reflash the nandroid backup. Now when the old backup boots, it gives me an error for a few apps that crashed on boot and then the OS itself crashes and gets stuck in a bootloop.
I've tried flashing new OS, reflashing old backup, process 2 or 3 times. It's the same errors and issues
Does anyone know what I can do now?
Also another small hurdle - The USB port is not functioning, everything and anything I can do now is via mounting the SD card and TWRP. Unless there is an alternate I am unaware of.
Thanks for reading!!
With a faulty USB port, you're missing the most easy and obvious step to fix this, flash via Odin.
I recommend getting your USB port fixed. (Is it from your PC/Laptop or phone that is faulty?) because you really need it for this and for future things that you may want to try.

My i9505 was running stock KitKat from Samsung and I tried to install CM13 ROM.
So I used Odin to root the phone and installed TWRP 2.8.6.0. After that I flashed the CM13 ROM and the Gapps Nano.
I got as far as rebooting into CM13. But then the "Google Play Store has stopped working" message keeps popping up starting from the initial setup phase. I ignored the message and went on to setup the wifi but couldn't progress any further. The wifi was detected and connected but then it was stuck on the Checking Connection/Software Update step.
I tried to reflash the rom and gapps again to no avail. The third time to Format Data from TWRP before reflashing - still didn't make a difference.
What's worst is now I cannot even get into TWRP! Whenever I press Vol Up + Power + Home, it will show the small 'entering recovery' message momentarily on the top left corner but then it phone simply restarted again.
I tried re-flashing TWRP using Odin, but still didn't work.
I'm stuck now, cannot get into the OS nor the recovery. Any suggestion as to what to do?
Thank you.

Format Data from twrp sometime corrupts the file system and brick the phone. (It's happened to me once)
The best way is to flash official firmware via odin and start from there.
I see - I'll try re-flashing the official rom. Btw, would you recommend CWM recovery instead then? Honestly, I'm not very proficient with this whole thing. The reason why I formatted was because I still could see all of my old folders in the phone memory. So I thought Factory Reset didn't really clean up my old rom data.
What do I have to do if I want to start with a really clean slate with CM13 (after reflashing the official one first)?
Also, I still have the issue of CM13 setup being stuck at the Software Update step (right after Wifi setup). Any clue why that happened?
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

CWM is outdated. Your best bet is TWRP. Try version 3.0.0.
Factory reset doesn't wipe your internal memory, if that's what you mean, you will have to do it manually.
Also, I recommend wiping data, cache, dalvik and system partitions manually from the advanced wipe menu. Factory reset only wipes data and caches, not system.
Oh, and about that stuck at setup issue, just skip that step if possible, you can still change that crap later
If you are unable to set up the ROM, you could flash back to a completely stock ROM and start over.
OK, I'm back on stock Android now.
Before I try flashing CM13 again, I just need suggestions about these two issues I had from previous try:
Unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped
I have searched for similar issues but can't quite pinpoint the cause. I used the correct GApps for my device and I also removed my SD card prior to installing.
Stuck on Check Connection/Software Update step
Last time I was stuck at this point and, responding to GDReaper, this step couldn't be skipped. The option was grayed out.

The sd card has nothing to do with it.
Sometimes gapps don't work on certain roms.
Just try another package.
If you use A-Gapps, the whole first time setup step will be skipped altogether. So that means that you won't run into the risk of getting stuck at that step again.
Or, after flashing the rom, you could use the recovery file manager to delete the setupwizard.apk after you flashed gapps. That should also prevent the initial setup process from initializing at first boot.

You probably used Opengapps. That also gives me a lot of errors.
Use Bankgs Gapps instead. They always work for me.

I used Open GApps, as was recommended in the CM13 post. So are you saying that my two issues were caused solely by the GApps? Because I thought me being stuck at Software Update was due to something else.

There are two files - one says Dynamic. But the file sizes are exactly the same. Is there any difference?

Not that I know. Just pick the one without Dynamic.

The initial setup process is related to gapps. And I don't recall there being any software update requests during the initial setup. It tells me to wait while it scans for network and WiFis, but I always skip those steps.
Open gapps sometimes work and sometimes they don't. It varies from day to day, since they are updated daily.
Just find a gapps package that works and stick to it until another version of android.
I just want to report back that my CM13 works perfectly with Banks GApps. Thanks to everyone who has helped!
Good afternoon -
Hopefully a quick question. I've been unable to find a clear and concise answer to this question so far.
TL;DR version: When Trying to flash stock firmwares, ODIN starts the flash but hangs on system.img.ext4 install. No error, just hang. Eventually I killed and tried again a few times (with different rom files too), same result. Left flash running overnight, same result. Was able to flash TWRP without issue. Please help! Not sure what I'm doing wrong here.
Detailed version:
I wanted to put Android 6.0 or 6.0.1 on my Sprint Galaxy S5 (SM-G900P). Previously I was running BOG1 I believe (Can't remember for sure) It was rooted so I couldn't use install via OTA Update. I made a backup of my previous rom So /hopefully/ I can go back if necessary. Here's the issue right now:
I downloaded the ...PCA Build from here: galaxys5update.com/galaxy-s5-stock-firmware.
Then wiped dalvik and regular cache, then put phone in download mode, and ran ODIN 3.XX.X (I tried a number of versions, 3.10.something, 3.07.something, 3.11.something (sorry for the lack of complete info, not in front of that computer right now so I don't have the exact details).
I loaded the Tar.md5 file into the proper spot in ODIN, then start the install. It starts running, I can see the progress in the information window. Then it gets to "system.img.ext4" and appears to freeze. I've let it go for 20-30 mins before disconnecting. I tried a different rom file and same result, ODIN just hangs. No error, just a hang. I left it running a flash overnight and it was still stuck at system.img.ext4 when I woke up this morning.
I was able to successfully flash TWRP but that's not really the solution.
Any help you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
C
Update: I flashed a nandroid backup from right before I started all this. It installed fine. I'm back to my Android 5.0. However, WIFI has stopped working, and the phone stops responding a little bit after the screen turns off, requiring a battery pull and reboot. Additionally, making or accepting calls causes a reboot.
Another update: Tried KIES to install new Firmware through normal update method, it starts but then hangs at 3%.
So any help you might have would be really appreciated!
same problem
I have the same problem. Did you ever find a solution to the system hang on that file problem???

I don't know if I have ever gotten that error before. You can try to update your samsung drivers on your computer, and make sure you are using the cable your phone came with. It sounds silly, but I have had issues with ODIN if I am not using the original cable.
At this point I have completely run out of options. I AM CALLING UPON THE XDA COMMUNITY TO PLEASE HELP ME. Little bit of background info, nexus 6p was rooted and modified through xposed. Had some modules installed, mostly quality of life and visual/theme modules, as well as the latest version of SuperSU.
These past few days my Nexus 6P has completely stopped responding at times. Extremely laggy and could not do **** with it, systemui kept restarting over and over and over again for no reason. Had to keep force rebooting (holding down the power button for 10 seconds) multiple times over and over again, to the point where it suddenly stopped booting into the OS, it just kept giving me the boot animation loop, i could only access the TWRP recovery i had installed. Before all of this **** went down, I had created a TWRP backup because it would be my safety net if i could somehow miraculously get it to work. Now i have a backup of my TWRP BACKUP FILE on my desktop.
I have wiped caches more times than i can count, have tried factory restoring and formatted the data, and tried flashing the stock google image (the same one that i originally flashed at the time that I got the phone when i started to root) as well as flashed the old TWRP version i had, as well as the current latest version of TWRP, and then transferred the backup i made back onto the phone's internal storage. Tried restoring the old backup from TWRP, and each time it restores, it just reboots without reaching 100% and once it reboots, it still gives me a bootloop, this time, no boot animation, it just gets stuck at the Google text with a little "unlocked" logo at the bottom. I have completely run out of options, and have A LOT of EXTREMELY IMPORTANT information i have saved on the phone.
I will say it again. I am EXTREMELY DESPERATE to get my data back, to the point where i am even willing to offer a cash reward for any help to get my phone working back to the way it used to, or even at least to extract the information through the backup, if at all possible.
Additional information about the files and images I used:
angler-mdb08k is the name of the google image i had back when i had the phone and have flashed again
twrp-2.8.7.2-angler is the TWRP version i had back when i had the phone originally at the time
I had flashed and followed guides online through adb method.
Hey guys, I've encountered a thorny problem on my wife's N910T3, and am running out of ideas about what this could be... so, could really use some help.
Some background: The phone's been working fine for over a year of ownership, mostly on the stock ROM, which gets pretty laggy at times. A few weeks ago I installed a custom ROM (the Acapolypse-X N7 port) to improve performance, and for the past few weeks it's been working perfectly fine on the custom ROM no problem.
Today, when my wife went to check Twitter, the phone crashed and started bootlooping. I had seen a similar issue on my Note 3 before (which turned out to be a specific issue with the kernel I was using), so I figured I would just go into recovery, flash a different kernel or at worst, do a clean install of the ROM.
That's when things started getting weird: The phone would crash while INSIDE recovery during ROM installation (I've never seen a phone crash inside recovery before...) After failing to successfully flash a ROM or, even in cases when it succeeds, fails to boot, I decided to do a full flash back to the latest unmodified stock ROM (since I couldn't find an ODIN-flashable image to download, I used Samsung Kies for this - typically this resolves any kind of left over from previous installations).
On the first attempt, it succeeded - the phone booted into the stock ROM and I was able to start customizing settings. Figuring the issue has been resolved, I went ahead and attempted to root by flashing TWRP through ODIN, and that's when the phone went back to rapidly bootlooping again (it reboots every 2 seconds, I can't even get into recovery when this is occuring). The only way I can return to Recovery is by flashing it again in ODIN (typically this trick will only work once; upon rebooting the phone after that it is prone to start bootlooping again).
Based on the symptoms I suspected the NAND going bad. However, I receive no emmc read/write errors during flashing - all write operations in ODIN results in success and my friend even ran a full storage check via ADB and this phone just doesn't seem to have any bad sectors (I almost wish it were since that would resolve the mystery).
Anyone have any ideas what may be the problem? I have a decent amount of experience installing custom roms on my phones and troubleshooting installation issues, but I've never seen anything like this (crashing/bootlooping directly inside recovery).
Yes this post is correctly dated. I've had this device a LOOOONNNGGG time.
The device has been rooted since shortly after I bought it new years ago. I've had very few problems since... which is why it's never been replaced.
I believe I have the stock ROM, sorry it's been a while.
When I start the device it gets stuck at the splash screen with the sprint logo.
I can get the device to "download mode" but I don't know what to do once there and I'm not sure I can do anything from here.
I can get the device to "android system recovery."
I know I installed TWRP when I rooted and installed the rooted ROM but when I boot to recovery it doesn't go there.
I've wiped the "cache partition" but the problem remained. I'm not sure what else to do from here and still be able to salvage data.
I'm trying to salvage the data on the internal storage. I'm pretty sure I could successfully "wipe data/ factory reset" and get it to "function" again but that's not the priority. I'm going to replace it regardless of success or failure. Data recovery is the priority here. (pictures and videos of my young children as well as less important stuff like contacts.)
I have an old laptop with an old version of ubuntu I can use or a newer one with windows 7 to work with. I mention this in case it makes this easier to help?
Thank you very much if you try to take a stab at this or refer someone that might!
Update:
So I managed to install TWRP via Odin.
I booted to this recovery and my data partition appears to be empty?
When I try to back up I get the error message "unable to mount '/data'"
I tried doing a wipe, not one of the fancy extra options ones just the regular wipe and it failed.
Any guidance will be extremely appreciated.
Edit:
So I've come to the conclusion that the data isn't accessible because of encryption and my pass code. Is there any way to enter it via recovery and access this info?
Is anybody out there?
Edit 2:
I hope this helps someone someday. I haven't solved the problem but I think I'm making progress.
First I had an old version of TWRP. I installed the latest for my device and tried backing up again. I'm not sure but I think it's working. TWRP dosen't seem to need my password for the backup. I imagine I'll just need it to access the data later.
Edit 3:
No sooner did I save the last edit and my backup failed.
Process ended with error : 255
