Call quality - Razer Phone Real Life Review

When you call granny, does she keep saying "Huh?! Wut?!" or does the conversation flow pretty well? Rate this thread to express how you feel about the Razer Phone's call quality. A higher rating indicates that calls are clear and crisp, and that regardless of background noise, you can hear the other party clearly (and with ample volume) and they can hear you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Very Quiet
The in-call volume is SO quiet and the mic is too sensitive; family can hear themselves loudly when I use speakerphone.

yes the call volume is dramatically quiet as if you are speaking to someone long distance in the 80s. very unhappy about this. razer sort!

Hmm. Perhaps a bluetooth device is required until Razer sorts this out.
Between the camera and this I still have to give them props for their first device. I don't see more problems than the Iphone X and Pixel 2 so far.. lol

no issues here, i can hear well and no complaints on the other end

Sounds pretty normal to me. I do have to kinda be precise on my ear placement but not terrible nor overly treble-thick.

Regular call volume is great for me. However when connected through Bluetooth if I make a call i can barely hear the other person, as if they are really far away. Incoming call on BT is fine though. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have this exact issue. Calls on the headset and speakerphone are fine. However just like you incoming BT calls are fine but outgoing are almost impossible to hear. I have tried removing and re-adding the pairing but no change.

A quick update. There was an update that I needed to restart to get. That fixed the bluetooth issue. Hope it works for anyone else too.

Yes, call volume is very very quiet. Something needs to be done about call quality and clarity..

When making an outgoing call, even the ringing tone is quiet.

After having the phone a bit, I will have to agree that call is very quiet.. Even turned up all the way... In fact you have to have it up all the way just to be able to have a conversation.

And yet they say "Oh that's strange. We've had no complaints of that."
If you complain enough, they'll replace it under warranty if you say you've factory reset it 4 or so times.
But there's no Limited Editions left so you'll only get a regular one.
Also they post your replacement only after you've sent yours and you've given them a tracking number.

Call quality has been excellent for me. I appreciate how well I can hear the folks on the other end of the line.

I hear people very quiet when calling them. This phone performance wise is really good battery as well but i have a dilemma because i can swap it for what ever i want note 8 or iphone 8 plus huawei mate 10 pro currently my main phone is the Iphone X 256gb

Have had the phone for two days
Mixed experience regarding call quality
Sometimes loud and sometimes a little low volume , although not too much.
Strange

The limited edition, is not special. It's a sticker.
Also, in defense of Razer, they give you a prepaid label.

It's also on your box. The green is a status symbol. It stands out as being one of the few that were available at launch.
It's a little thing that let's you be proud that you managed to get one.
That's the difference.

If you're more concerned about a sticker's color to the point you're afraid to RMA it, that's on you.
Otherwise if it were me? I would tear the sticker off before I RMA it and explain to customer service they're getting a phone back without the sticker.
I understand what you're saying, but I feel it's unnecessary especially since it's a sticker. But I guess if the sticker makes you happier than the phone makes ya, grats.
I'm willing to bet it wouldn't be that hard to duplicate the sticker. I'm pretty tempted to do so just to make all the folks who think it's so important realize, it's not. No serial numbers anyways.

Microphone problem?

Is anybody having problems with mic? People i am talking to can't hear me most of the time... I was just wondering if this is happening with everybody?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Same Issue
I am having the same problem. During the first call I made, the person on the other end complained that my voice was "garbled." That is, the said that they couldn't really understand me. I just got off the phone with my Grandmother (who is hard of hearing) and she nearly hung up on me because she couldn't understand me. I am curious if this is just the unit I have, or if it plagues all Atrixes.
Try turning off noise cancelation
I am also having the same problems. I've fiddled with all of the noise cancellation settings and it didn't help. I even returned the phone and made them give me a new one thinking it may have been just mine but still have the same problem.
If this doesn't get fixed ASAP I'll be returning it to AT&T within the 30 day window.
Mic and speakerphone issue
Same issue with mic on the Atrix. Two people told me my voice sounded muffled. When I called them from the Captivate they could hear me clearly.
Also, they hear fine when I put the Atrix on speakerphone but I hear static on my side but no such problem on Captivate.
Anyone having the speakerphone static issue?
Call quality on my Atrix has been the best of any smart phone I've ever owned. I have it set up just how it came out of the box, pretty much. Not sure if noise cancellation is on or not.
I am having to return my atrix because no one can understand me!!! If I use bluetooth the sound quality is great but as soon as switch to the handset, they say it sounds like I am talking through a cardboard tube. Man, what is up with this? I went back to my iPhone for now.
i think it's a production issue. on my first atrix, straight out of the box, i could not hear anyone when they called me and they couldn't hear me. all i got was static, not even a garbled voice. i exchanged it and voice has been flawless on the new one. i would suggest doing that, there may have been a bad batch.
At this early date, no complaints on a number of calls, and I did call myself on another line to check. Earmic sounded fine too. (A Klipsch.)
But today one person said she couldn't understand me. I think because there was a motormouth making too much noise in the room, or maybe because I was inside a building and the call strength wasn't very good. But then again...the other things that person DID say, made me think she shouldn't be allowed to answer phones in a business office anyway.
So far, so good.
Same problem

No one can hear me either. Need to exchange it tomorrow.
As far as I can tell, the mic on this phone is pretty sensitive but only for about an inch or two. This is what noise canceling is about: letting in sounds near the mic while keeping out ambient noise. I had the same problem on my N1 too, though not as severe.
You can set voice quality on call setting
there are 4 modes for your mic
Looks like some people fixed this problem with an exchange. When i posted on the moto owners forum. The board manager PM'd me asking if they could do the exchange and are investigating the issue.
Yea I think you should go and change the nnoise suppression options and test more calls before taking it back.
I had it on high and people said they couldn't hear mme either.

I have tried it on normal high and off, a new sim card (att usggestion) turned on that MOS optoion and the only time people can hear me is if the mic is right in front of my mouth, i am on speaker phone or using a wired or BT headset.
i have tried quite a bit.
This is my biggest problem with my Atrix right now.
There's a long thread on the subject of Atrix voice quality on supportforums.motorola.com.
Their moderator named Mark has promised a diagnosis on this from Motorola within 48 hours from yesterday, so hoping to know something soon.

[Q] For those with their Nexus 4, is the earpiece making a screeching noise?

If I place my Nexus 4 against my ear, I can hear high pitched screeching and some popping coming from the earpiece, even when a call is not taking place. At first I thought it was a heat issue, maybe some capacitors or something getting a bit hot and whistling, so I turned the phone off and the noises stopped instantly.
This is pretty annoying and surely shouldn't be happening
Yes, mine too

I'm glad you posted that, mine does it too - and I thought I had a faulty phone.
According to support I'm the first to report such a problem, have you called support about it? - 0800 328 6081.
The more of us that call, the better the chance it's sorted (if it's possible).
I can't live with that noise, it's too loud for me as I have sensitive hearing on interference like that.
So it looks like I'm sending mine back for a refund and go buy a S3
It does sound like poor build quality in suppressing electrical interference to the ear speaker, as you say capacitors or even a processor is leaking noise to that speaker in the same way cell/mobile radio causes to external speakers when brought close to them.
WOW so many problems already with this thing!!! I don't know about this phone right now

I returned it to the store for a refund - they refused to swap it for another as they couldn't hear it . I've ordered another which I should get tomorrow, and if that has the same issue I'm not sure what to do - it doesn't really sound like something that can be fixed through software, does it?
I asked on another forum and one person replied saying that there's was ok, but maybe they're ears just aren't as sensitive as ours.
I remember as a kid, I could hear CRT TVs from a long way off (no sound was coming through the speakers) and nobody else could.

I think you're right, I too always heard a CRT working (I still can when I see one working!)
Maybe we're hearing interference the average user is not going to hear.
If anyone else is reading this and owns a Nexus 4, try calling your voicemail (which I assume would be free for you) - during the call wait for a few seconds and listen carefully, it's more obvious when you're not talking and in a call.
The noise is almost like having a small fly trapped between the phone and your ear at times, it also reminds me of the noise a hard drive makes at times and most of us know what that sounds like.

You guys are nerds
No, I can feel your pain! Hopefully you guys can sort this out and this is in general not a common problem with the N4.
i don't have this issue
It seems to be an issue with the electromagnetic shielding. I get this problem when I am next to my sound system and amplifier. Those things arent shielded. Now in school where theres basically nothing else here my earpiece is completely clean. Not even a hiss.
does it also emit a sound when it is swithced on, but the screen is off? i remember i had sth. like this (high-pitched sound) on my first google nexus s, but it was clearly coming from the screen rather than the earpiece.
Received a replacement today - it's A LOT better. There's still a very feint buzz, but it's barely noticeable.

Yes, even did it without a simcard inside. Definitely coming from the earpiece, if I moved my ear down the phone it was quieter/silent.

Didn't test the previous one in airplane mode, but just tried this one and it's the same.
Definitely getting the same issue with my N4; screen on or off. Can't imagine this being fixed by firmware, sounds like a bad hardware design.
I'm also once of these people who gets irritated by the sound of DVD Players/VCR/TV etc. But two other people I have shown seem to think its an issue too.
It's good to read a replacement was better, that's made my day.
The problem is certainly a electromagnetic shielding issue with the earpiece, I can stand in a middle of a field and it has that sound you often get from PC or Hi-Fi speakers when you stand close to them.
But with the earpiece you can't move it of course - so clearly a design flaw, and hopefully only on a batch?
That said, it does seem to be an intermittent fault, I've also noticed it doesn't happen within the first 10-30 seconds of a call. I wonder if the phone stops all background processes during the start of a call, but then later kicks in which causes those noises.

I can hear the high pitched noise from a CRT from, like, 100'. Can a lot of other people really not hear them? Also, deer/dog/insect deterrents that people use in their homes and yard give me an instant headache from the sound. Great. This does not bode well. Oh well, I'll cross that bridge if/when I get to it.
Same here

Exactly that, those who can't hear those audible repellents for pets, or not hear the Apps available which also emit very annoying high pitch sounds - then would not be bothered by the noise we mention here.
I'm certain if I took my N4 into a shop, the typical response from staff would be "we can't hear it"
I have this issue with my phone as well. Screen on or off. Charging or not. Noise is still present.

Anyone else think earpiece is too quiet?

Maybe my nexus 6 was just that good but it feels like the v20's earpiece speaker isnt very clear or loud....I can live with lower quality but the sound level is kind of low (hard to hear people in noisy places)

Yeah its low (with my over the ear cans), went all in on a descent amp that can usb of my pc and/or directly off my phone. Like my cans to rattle sometimes. With my IEMs though it gets loud after 50-60. Id make sure you have enabled Hi-Fi sound on the phone first and found this app to be very useful in adding some punch and volume to my tracks. ----> Equalizer (by Smart Android Apps)

I'm experiencing the same. Extremely clear, no issues whatsoever.
Speaking of the Nexus 6. That phone was hands down the best Android phone ever made. If they re-released it with a fingerprint sensor, I would buy it again. Best speakers and sound of any phone. It could have used a better camera, but other than that, 9 out of 10.
As for the speaker sound in the V20. I think it could be a a bit louder. Clarity isn't an issue for me. But it's def not very loud.
On the T-Mobile variant this thing is loud and clear. If I turn it all the way up I can hold it away from my ear in front of me and still hear the other person clear enough to understand them. definitely no issues so far involving that

Yes loudness is the issue. Its too quiet if you are anywhere with noise like the grocery store.
Nexus 6 was a good phone but had issues (guess all phones do). The camera was pretty bad and buggy at times. Speakers were great but if you had lower battery they would automatically decrease the volume like 50% (even at max volume) that was insanely annoying. And lastly it throttled speed pretty badly when battery got low. Oh and it was pretty big, alittle smaller screen with the v20 but much smaller in the hand.

Pull up your phone app. Make sure it's on the dial menu and hit the 3 vertical dots in the upper right hand corner. Go to call settings. The last option should be one that reads "more" . Peruse that and see what may help. Good luck.

Only thing I can think of would be to try turning on hearing aid compatibility or maybe messing with the call clarity and noise suppression options and see if that affects anything for ya.
I have both voice clarity and noise suppression turned on and have no problems with low volume at all. I remember reading somewhere on a different phone e that the hearing aid option made it noticeably louder on that specific phone so you could try that and see if it works for this phone.

Am finding the same too, this time i have the voice clarity option enabled, lets see if it makes a difference. I find it soft in a quiet room, no idea how this will work out on the street. Might be forced to get a headset in that case.
Which would be a pity becaue this phone is all about audio. My speakers are perfectly fine. Why does the earpiece have to be so quiet

5 out of 10 for call quality. The person on the other end says my voice has a high pitched static to it when I use the phone itself or if I am using the USB buds. Doesn't happen when I am on bluetooth so I would say it may be hardware related in some way.

Same here. Landline quality for me.
Depends on carrier and service area for both ends of the call. My experience so far is it's not any better or worse than my LG V20 was.
I have a faint static sound on phone calls through the ear speaker. It sounds kind of like ground loop feedback you could get in audio electronics.
the first person i called said i sound good without asking, and when i called myself i didnt hear static. wifi calling seems to work on att too. this is coming from nexus 6 (no P)
It's good on my end but yesterday I was told by the other person it was horrible. She said she could hear every little sound going on around me painfully loud
Exceptional Call Quality - better than my Samsung Note 9 by far. I called my son the other day and without saying anything about being on a new phone, he mentioned how great the call was - clear and crisp - I noticed it too - on my first call - Helps that I am on ATT and Enhanced LTE services are working.
I am really happy about that - Enhanced LTE and WiFi Calling did not work on my Note 9 but they work GREAT on my Pixel 3 XL -
I have the same issue. Worked with Google support on the issue and they came to the conclusion it was defective.
Started RMA process, but after reading all the issues people are having with RMAs I'm just going to return the 3XL.
As for the noise, it's a constant static noise only heard while using the handset on calls. Sounds like an old flip phone that is on a call while being charged.

I'm getting coil whine like noises during calls, likely from poor shielding to EMI, otherwise calls are clear on my end. RMA'd it but I suspect the replacement will have the same flaw.
Received my Pixel 3XL last week. Called a friend who uses an iPhone (7 I think), and I have never experienced a phone call so clear...ever. It was shockingly clear. Both of us are on AT&T in a metropolitan area. Also, my previous phone was a Pixel XL. Another thing: after the clarity shocked me I pulled my phone away from my head and looked at the screen, and there was a tiny "HD" beside the call duration.

Very crisp voice calls, maybe in part to Three 4G voice data?
Hands free calls through the supplied headphones is also fantastic
I'm having horrible phone calls and I'm using Project Fi with a Pixel 3. Sent Google some feedback and took a survey so we'll see what happens. Overall super disappointed in both the service and the phone. I'm starting to regret switching from my Oneplus

My first call sucked. Ugh!
Sound from speakers is acceptable. Except for the first call. The people of earth were right
It is a bit of a shock when you make your first call, the under the screen speaker certainly has taken the edge off HD calling, it sounds muffed (unsurprisingly) and gone is the feeling of the other other person in the call is sat in your head, it is definitely a step backwards in terms of call quality.

When I'm at work and receive a call the person on the other end says I sound like I'm under water talking. Happened twice in the last week. I work in a metal building but have very good service. Right next to a tower. Phone works fine anywhere but work. Anyone else have this experience from inside a metal building? Not sure anything can be done about it.

If I was a frequent user of making and receiving calls, I would have no option but to send my P5 back, luckily I don't use this option that often.
I cannot believe that the Google Quality Control people signed this part of the phone off. I honestly cannot remember ever owning a mobile phone with such rubbish call quality. If I'm honest, same applies to the speakers.
I get what you mean about that first call, very strange experience to what I'm used to but I do often have a headset on. I did sound clear at the other end though
After a month i got used to it
You also need your ear a lot further down the phone than we are all used to, that makes a difference taking a call on the Pixel 5.
Coming from a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 with the speaker under the screen, I can say that the pixel's 5 call sound quality is not acceptable at all. Samsung's call quality was crystal clear. Pixel's call quality is bad in most phone calls
