What is the best ROM for performance for this device?
I'm currently on Pure Nexus (based on 6.0.1) it's quite smooth but what bugs me is that the audio stutters when trying to multitask, like browsing, opening other apps etc.
I would appreciate if someone could give me some advice on what ROM I should use for best performance and eliminates these audio stutters if possible, because I know this device is quite old and wasn't that fast even when it came out.

I'm not sure what model you have but I've tried out a few roms. CM12.1 and Resurrection Remix 5.5.7 work pretty good on my Tilapia. Dirty unicorns 7.1.1 is pretty cool but has some bugs

Would you recommend Pure Nexus Rom? It feels a bit laggy when browsing the internet sometimes.

I tried PNP but couldn't get gapps to jive with it. I gave up and tried something else
Honestly the AOSP 7.1.2 seemed to run the best, even google assistant works on it.
<updated to AOSP 7.1.2
It is running great so far.

Hi everyone,
Now that N is underway you might be wondering whether or not you should switch from M and I'm here to help you with that. Do keep in mind that I recommend everyone try everything for themselves. I'm just leaving my thoughts here to aid the undecided.
Should I drop CM 13 for 14?
Yes! Please do. Unless you use CMTE, I see no reason to not switch to CM 14. It's maturing at a really fast rate and is ready to be used as a daily driver in my experience. It's great for the majority of you. I recommend giving F-AOSP a shot too while you're at it considering the amount of time that went into getting it to work, and the simplicity of AOSP.
What if I'm using Sultans build/Sultanized RR?
I would stay honestly. His kernel is awesome, he's quick to fix things, and delivers a ROM in an entirely different league. Besides AOSPA and Citrus, it is the only ROM for the OnePlus X that is truly complete CAF right now, and it's great.
What if I don't like CM/AOSP?
We'll firstly, your a moron as every ROM ever uses them as a base. Secondly, stick to M if you need features. Most ROMs are going to be similar at this point if they're N based. Give them time to adopt features.
What if I work for the government?
And you bought an Onyx? Your an idiot. GTFO. Restore to stock lol. But seriously, a bug is expected here and there....
My recommendation
I switch ROMs incredibly frequently. I flash what I feel like. You have to try everything in order to find out for yourself however I can say without a doubt that...p
The winner, for me, is Cardinal AOSP
EVERYTHING is done subtly and really well. It's based on AOSP OMS and adds a lot of stuff that is cleverly put into place. It doesn't feel cluttered and it runs amazingly. Stick to the M builds for now as they are a proper representation of what @rohitporoli and Adarsh can accomplish. It's the pinnacle of what's been done, and I can't say that for most ROMs here. Citrus is their CAF counterpart with CMTE and it's great as well.
Honorable mentions
Zephyr by Sarthak Narang
Tesla/Tipsy/Validus by Martin Coulon
Exodus by RajaM
Dirty Unicorns by Rohit and Vatsal maintains his own with Tipsy trees instead of CM ones
PS
Use whatever build of CM 14 you feel like using. I used Sarthaks for testing personally, and it's held up well. Fabio did an excellent job on F-AOSP too, and Cardinal will take a while to be ready for prime time, but they'll get there!
Thanks for reading everyone, and as usual, enjoy!
I got bored, okay?
As funny as this may seem, I actually get the best performance (with less stutters, not gaming performance) with oxygen marshmallow (with a few kernel tweaks). I don't know if it's because it's odexed, but everything is very fast. Apps open quite faster than any custom rom (from what I read around, that is actually one of the advantages of being odexed). I tried cm14 and and aosp and initially everything seems great, but after a bit I start to get stutters. I really hate lags and stutters and probably are aware of minor stutters that don't bother 99% of Android users, I'm very picky. But honestly oxygen (and h2os) were the best roms for me. I think I tried nearly every rom there is for our device lol. Everyone on XDA is obsessed about battery life and I'm the opposite, I care mostly for a lagfree(and stutter free) experience, I don't care for a laggy phone with 10 hours SOT

I'm at a school for around 12 hours. Lag free, I can agree with, but I gear my kernels for battery life in general. I don't like having to charge it every 3 hours of use. That's my explanation

Hello, changed software numerous times on all my previous phones but never took the plunge with my S5 ...
It has now gotten slow, bit buggy etc...
So want to finally take the plunge... what's the best / fastest most stable rom available now?
Iv'e always liked stock android aswell... Currently running Android 6 standard Samsung / Touchwiz ...
Much help / advice appreciated... thanks
I have tried a fare amount of roms for this device, such as Liquid smooth, AICP, Resurrection remix, Bliss pop, CM13 since the past year.
In my experience cm13 is the the most stable custom rom, but not necessarily the fastest.
However I have been using Exodus since the past week, I have not had any app crashes and is much faster at booting and shutting down my S5, and over all the overall responsiveness is much better. Compared to all the other roms I have used.

Boot time speed may not be noticeable at first few boots but it seems to improve once you being using the rom for a while.

That is what I thought when I found this rom but, they do nightly updates nearly every day, the latest is 14/10/2016 at the moment which you can find here >
They are also the official release as well
Thanks guys, will take a look... does the finger print scanner work on that one?
Just seems a bit daunting there's that many with all differents features etc lol... Seems hard to find a preferably stock android (similar to nexus) or a simple, perfectly working, fast, stable rom...
Unfortunately it does not have a fingerprint scanner as a option but you could always try xposed and download this module here >
So I've been on WETA since it dropped for our Verizon phones.. I really think it's the most complete ROM and am always hesitant to even try anything else.. I like the concept of the AOSP ROM's but I don't like the things that don't work, such as low audio or the second screen.. Those two things I use all the time so it wouldn't make sense to sacrifice those.. I also like 3minit battery mod, and I don't think AOSP has that yet.. Anyways, just seein what you guys use and why you use it..
Thanks!
I am currently using Resurrection Remix. I was on WETA but battery life was pretty bad for me. With RR I get battery Life on par with my iPhone 7 plus.

how bad is the low audio in video recordings..?? I haven't tried a Lineage based rom yet but I was thinking about testing it out..
I use video recordings all the time for my car and stuff so it's pretty important to be able to hear the audio in my recordings..
On WETA right now and it has it's quirks but liking it so far. Would like to try MEGArom but I've read that it has issues with WiFi calling and I havent researched enough into it yet to see if there is a workaround. Lineage and other AOSP stuff doesnt interest me as you lose access to some of the unique features of the V20.
I'm on Tilde's ROM, great battery life, smooth like butter

Currently Stock Nougat is the Best Nougat. Some people have even flashed it on XT1575 (TWRP Backup)

I found stock to be far better than any of the aforementioned custom roms in terms of performance, stability and battery life. Strange that you should find it the opposite.

Do you happen to have a link to a good guide for how to do this? I tried with a TWRP backup I found on here once before and it totally screwed everything up. I've been on custom roms for a while but I'd love to try nougat with my XT1575 (Pure)

If you have the newest modem/baseband:
With twrp format data, adv.wipe all, restore only boot & system from xt1572.
Better idea: flash the newest Dirty Unicorns or one of RRs I posted in #7.
Yeah, Dirty Unicorns. Pretty Smooth, no bugs (Well, I didn't find any), good battery life and no lag. Before this I was using RR. It's good, have a lot more of customization but after a couple of days of intense use it became a little bit laggy.
I've using DU since a week, same apps installed like in RR. No changes, not even lag.

I was exactly the same. Although battery life on du has never impressed me, It is not getting laggy after intense use like RR did for me as well.

Can you try speaker phone and see if the other party can hear u during a call? My du is perfect only this issue is there, it's not a big deal but I really could make use of my speaker phone when driving.

I barely use the phones to make calls. But tonight if I can I'll try calling someone (Via whatsapp) and post the results here.
I've tried AICP and lineage, both Oreo. Both had just don't run well when compared to stock ROMs. I see an OG pixel with similar hardware operate as smooth as butter. Any smooth ROMs?

Hi. I am currently with aosp extended 5.4 and it works very well between this and Validus 1.7 I think they are the best I've tried, in my opinion.
Oreo for our device as of now isn't in good state if you want the stability. Big battery drain and some minor different problems here and there are present in every oreo rom.
I'd suggest some stable nougat roms like omnirom, mokee or paranoidandroid. Battery life is good and phone feels perfect in everyday usage.
Aicp is one of the smoothest very good in nearly every way as is aosp extended, lineage,RR,aosip, validus and some I've missed (all oreo)are really good.I don't experience the lag and instability and battery is pretty good too.
