VS995, what's your favorite rom and why? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

So I've been on WETA since it dropped for our Verizon phones.. I really think it's the most complete ROM and am always hesitant to even try anything else.. I like the concept of the AOSP ROM's but I don't like the things that don't work, such as low audio or the second screen.. Those two things I use all the time so it wouldn't make sense to sacrifice those.. I also like 3minit battery mod, and I don't think AOSP has that yet.. Anyways, just seein what you guys use and why you use it..
Thanks!

I am currently using Resurrection Remix. I was on WETA but battery life was pretty bad for me. With RR I get battery Life on par with my iPhone 7 plus.

how bad is the low audio in video recordings..?? I haven't tried a Lineage based rom yet but I was thinking about testing it out..
I use video recordings all the time for my car and stuff so it's pretty important to be able to hear the audio in my recordings..

On WETA right now and it has it's quirks but liking it so far. Would like to try MEGArom but I've read that it has issues with WiFi calling and I havent researched enough into it yet to see if there is a workaround. Lineage and other AOSP stuff doesnt interest me as you lose access to some of the unique features of the V20.

I'm on Tilde's ROM, great battery life, smooth like butter

As far as performance this phone comes stock with really great performance, really even battery for that matter. However there is not much your going to be able to do to increase performance of apps like messaging, Gmail, etc. Those apps will already be pretty much flawless. As far as battery all you can do without root is the regular stuff like disable GPS, AUTO SYNC, use auto brightness. There are several apps that claim to help with battery. I used to use Juice Defender back a couple years ago. If you root your phone there is much more you can do. Mods, tweaks, roms, custom kernels, etc. Good luck!

As jcnbama stated its pretty sweet outta the box...but to have an all around improvement performance/battery wise you're gonna wanna root your device and install a custom rom...rooting is much simpler and much safer than on many devices...Mahdi aosp rom seems to give the most stability, performance and extreme battery life in my opinion... Good luck!

You can call me a fanboy or whatever but I've yet to find any custom ROM that outperforms stock in battery life or performance, especially stability. There are some big trade offs too like audio quality and camera (even on mahdi) which are both deal breakers for me. Sad, since I love stock android but stock ticks every box.

Yeah...you would have to be a fanboy to still think stock outperforms aosp in any way...especially Mahdi...benchmarks(which I don't trust to be accurate)show higher...as well as side by side tests of stock and aosp shows how muchs faster tasks are completed...But...at least as far as the g2 is concerned I can see why you love stock...I have been stuck with Samsung's touchwiz ui for my last 3 devices...it was uglyAnd downright overfilled with bloatware...but fully rooted and with a few tweaks I could see myself using stock on the g2...but I still get better stability, performance and battery life on Mahdi than I have experienced on anything hands down

I didn't like it right off the bat. I loved cm 10.2 and I was pretty happy on Mahdi until I played music over Bluetooth. No matter how many audio tweaks and kernel tweaks I made I just couldn't get to sound good. The video camera audio was the same. I can live with the odd random reboot but the sound quality of stock is what sealed it for me.

How long has it been since you tried it?most if not all of these bugs have been fixed...I couldn't use it due to buggyness either...I tried it after the 6-28 release and it was smooth sailing ever since...every update has continued to improve my experience and its my dd at this point...I actually do keep a backup of stock(all bloat removed and lots of optimizations) due to to some features that only come stock...but I have faster 4g and WiFi connectivity using mahdi...don't know why...I guess one could argue good and bad for both here...but I guess since touchwiz from Sammy just wasn't an option for me aosp is what I'm accustomed to...lol

Its been a while since I tried it. I've been on the cloudy Roms and cloudyg3 is my daily driver now, surprisingly. Running perfect for me anyway. I'll have to give Mahdi another go before android L comes into effect. Its good to know they're perfecting it. The OP's head must be spinning now with all this information.

My Opinion: M vs N as of September 2016

Hi everyone,
Now that N is underway you might be wondering whether or not you should switch from M and I'm here to help you with that. Do keep in mind that I recommend everyone try everything for themselves. I'm just leaving my thoughts here to aid the undecided.
Should I drop CM 13 for 14?
Yes! Please do. Unless you use CMTE, I see no reason to not switch to CM 14. It's maturing at a really fast rate and is ready to be used as a daily driver in my experience. It's great for the majority of you. I recommend giving F-AOSP a shot too while you're at it considering the amount of time that went into getting it to work, and the simplicity of AOSP.
What if I'm using Sultans build/Sultanized RR?
I would stay honestly. His kernel is awesome, he's quick to fix things, and delivers a ROM in an entirely different league. Besides AOSPA and Citrus, it is the only ROM for the OnePlus X that is truly complete CAF right now, and it's great.
What if I don't like CM/AOSP?
We'll firstly, your a moron as every ROM ever uses them as a base. Secondly, stick to M if you need features. Most ROMs are going to be similar at this point if they're N based. Give them time to adopt features.
What if I work for the government?
And you bought an Onyx? Your an idiot. GTFO. Restore to stock lol. But seriously, a bug is expected here and there....
My recommendation
I switch ROMs incredibly frequently. I flash what I feel like. You have to try everything in order to find out for yourself however I can say without a doubt that...p
The winner, for me, is Cardinal AOSP
EVERYTHING is done subtly and really well. It's based on AOSP OMS and adds a lot of stuff that is cleverly put into place. It doesn't feel cluttered and it runs amazingly. Stick to the M builds for now as they are a proper representation of what @rohitporoli and Adarsh can accomplish. It's the pinnacle of what's been done, and I can't say that for most ROMs here. Citrus is their CAF counterpart with CMTE and it's great as well.
Honorable mentions
Zephyr by Sarthak Narang
Tesla/Tipsy/Validus by Martin Coulon
Exodus by RajaM
Dirty Unicorns by Rohit and Vatsal maintains his own with Tipsy trees instead of CM ones
PS
Use whatever build of CM 14 you feel like using. I used Sarthaks for testing personally, and it's held up well. Fabio did an excellent job on F-AOSP too, and Cardinal will take a while to be ready for prime time, but they'll get there!
Thanks for reading everyone, and as usual, enjoy!
I got bored, okay?
As funny as this may seem, I actually get the best performance (with less stutters, not gaming performance) with oxygen marshmallow (with a few kernel tweaks). I don't know if it's because it's odexed, but everything is very fast. Apps open quite faster than any custom rom (from what I read around, that is actually one of the advantages of being odexed). I tried cm14 and and aosp and initially everything seems great, but after a bit I start to get stutters. I really hate lags and stutters and probably are aware of minor stutters that don't bother 99% of Android users, I'm very picky. But honestly oxygen (and h2os) were the best roms for me. I think I tried nearly every rom there is for our device lol. Everyone on XDA is obsessed about battery life and I'm the opposite, I care mostly for a lagfree(and stutter free) experience, I don't care for a laggy phone with 10 hours SOT

I'm at a school for around 12 hours. Lag free, I can agree with, but I gear my kernels for battery life in general. I don't like having to charge it every 3 hours of use. That's my explanation

Tonight I will do that

Lineage vs Bad Boyz?

I'm going to take the plunge and try a new ROM, but I was wondering if people here had tried these or another and could recommend their favourite? Anything to keep in mind when going to say Lineage over stock? Lineage has the speaker bug still but does the DAC still work? Any bugs in Bad Boyz?
AFAIK the DAC still functions properly. Flash Viper4Arise and limit output for better speaker quality.
My personal favorite ROM is Ressurection Remix. It has good customisation, reasonably stable, and the battery is good. Also has Magisk with Xposed built in, also has substratum built in (if you're into that stuff).
(If you need links, let me know)
RR remix with Custom kernel AX7 and Viper4arise . Works perfect for me
Lineage while great was not very stable. Since 7.1.1 came out for our phone officially I reverted to stock.
RR? I'll check that out!
The reason I asked about Lineage was because Reddit was talking about amazing it was when it launched, touting improvements everywhere and really making the phone amazing.
RR? I'll check that out!

If you haven't tried our RR yet, I think you should. Definitely more stable with lots of amazing customization. As @Cyberwolf2 mentioned, coupling RR with AX7 kernel is seriously good business. Much more robust and stable than stock, although I miss the near-perfect audio from stock D:
Bad boyz rom is the best specially 7.1.1 it comes with wifi calling wich is awesome
RR is very nice, but I couldn't stand the sound issue. There are a few other missing features compared to stock, but they are relatively minor compared to what you get. Overall, my pick is bad boyz, especially now that we have 7.1.1. Everything will just work, and I really like Magisk.
Sound is crucial for me. I didn't buy this phone to make it sound worse (on headphones!). So RR is out for me.
Does Bad Boyz have the DAC working?

Bad boys is a stock rom. Helps to read the thread and be informed.
I like the Badboy ROM but can't stand that ZTE still has some sort of app killing going on. I set the right parameters in power management and still the app closes. The same app works perfect in LineageOS ROMs but keeps getting closed in the stock ROM.
Oh yeah the stock app killer is annoying. Does it still happen on 7.1? It hasn't happened to me for several weeks so I forgot about it. I wonder if it stopped happening when I flashed the apk profile Zhana balanced. Try that and see if it resolves the problem. I get fantastic battery life with it too.
The app killer started playing up really bad for me, then I factory reset after the 7 update and it's been fine ever since. Same for 7.1.
It looks like I'll be trying Bad Boyz soon then!
I installed LineageOS the first day it was released. It's very nice and, for me, very stable. Never experienced any crashes or freezes, lags or anything. It's a also much lighter on the battery, I get awesome SOT with it. Switched to RR a few weeks ago and I found it to be even more advanced. There's just so many settings. RR seemed just as stable as LOS.
Yesterday, I tried dual booting Bad Boyz (primary) with RR (secundary) but I couldn't set the RR rom as secundary once I booted in it...
For now, I'm running Bad Boyz. I liked the Aroma installer: select apps, launcher and dpi to be installed. I installed it because I really couldn't miss the awesome audio experience on stock-based ROMs anymore. Viper4Arise and other tricks help a little bit, but really don't come even close to the stock sound.
Yeah stock sound/DAC is a deal breaker for me. I can't fathom why you'd even have the Axon 7 and then get rid of the DAC!
Are you using Viper on Bad Boyz? I've always used Viper, I imagine it coupled with the DAC sounds pretty incredible right?

Which Rom do you Prefer and why?

I'm currently on LOS but I Will return to nuclear as the battery is very poor for me on LOS and RR.

How is the battery life compared to LOS and Nuclear?
I can not make comparisons between roms because I only use RR because of optimizations. I get 2 full days with 5 and a half to 6 hours of screen on time. Can not complain.
Resurrection remix is the only thing that exists.
Unlike the others, I haven't tried RR yet, I thought the locked thread was an indication I should wait.
I've tried Stock MM, Stock N, LOS and Nuclear. The stock ROMs were nice, but I don't get much out of Mifavor, and there are too many default apps I don't need.
LOS makes for a nice base, but requires a lot of tinkering to get what you'd otherwise get from a ROM that's using it as a base.
That's where Nuclear shined for me. It ships with substratum, has nice options for the lockscreen, and statusbar, and kernel optimizations. The battery life has been great so far.
Though, now I'm thinking I should give RR a whirl
This thread should've included a poll. My vote goes to NucleaROM. It is my first non-stock rom on this phone and the moment I started using it I realized how well LineageOS works on this phone and how little I will miss MiFavor or whatever it's called, although I have to admit that the stock rom was pretty fast and smooth aswell.

I love LOS 14.1 and am extremely happy since the speaker output was recently fixed. It seems to have the most support also (the whole LOS team)
I would switch to another ROM if the battery life is better though.. thats my only problem with the axon 7 now. are any of the other ROMs significantly better?
Stock, because deodexing is for noobs and bloatware is for pros.

Yeah, Dirty Unicorns. Pretty Smooth, no bugs (Well, I didn't find any), good battery life and no lag. Before this I was using RR. It's good, have a lot more of customization but after a couple of days of intense use it became a little bit laggy.
I've using DU since a week, same apps installed like in RR. No changes, not even lag.
