Pixel XL is dying... - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Oh my, I have no idea what happened to my PIxel XL but over the past 2 weeks, it seems a slew of Google apps isn't responding, most importantly the phone app. I've had the device since launch, taken very good care of it, it's in a protective case and I've never dropped it. It's never been in water or even around water. I did have the bootloader unlocked and the phone was rooted but I was running stock images.. A few days ago, I did the fastboot flash_all to factory (with the -w) and even upgraded OTA to Oreo yet the problems still exist. I can't really make phone calls right now, when I launch the app it just freezes up and eventually gives me the 'not responding message'.. but the phone app isn't the only problem, it seems to happen with google voice and google assistance as well. This all happened right around the time I ordered my Pixel XL 2..(which I don't have in my hands yet - arrives tomorrow). I wonder if I hurt my pixel XL feelings or what?
Any suggestions? or anyone else run into this before? seems so odd.. my wife the iPhone fangirl is making fun of my pixel xl I hate it!

Its time for you to do a factory reset, you have covered the other possibilities. This isn't a hardware issue, its software. Reset it.

Placebo, mine runs better when they launch a new flagship.

Doing a factory reset in Oreo, and not syncing with my backup from the cloud (starting fresh) seems to have solved the issue. Also got my pixel 2 XL so less a priority. Still strange it happened in the first place.

Happy ending! Enjoy your new toy...

I bought a new Pixel C. Got it yesterday. Has to get returned. :(

So I got the new tablet last night. Set it up without issue. It is very very fast. I let it charge overnight. I used it a bit early this morning. Brought it to work with me. Went to hit the power button and nothing. I hold it down, nothing. I plug it in, nothing. I contact google support and they said I need to send it in and they would refund me. And I can just buy a new one.
Not sure I want to. This is a horrid experience. I am really still wondering if an android tab is viable anymore. Besides the google tab, I don't see any other tablet even close to as good. But unsure about risking the purchase of another Pixel. I am rather depressed this morning.
While I completely understand your hesitation on following up with another Pixel C, especially after your horrible first impression, I would like to say I got one a while ago and have it running on the latest Android N preview and I love it. Only real issue I have is occasionally my wifi signal in my apartment will either drop or refuse to connect entirely, and that could just be attributed to my wifi being ****ty. It works fine with my phone hotspot.
It's completely up to you though. I'm quite happy with my Pixel C. Perfect size for what I need, and does most anything I need to do when I'm not at my computer. Awesome for any form of media consumption, better form factor than my computer or phone and the resolution is perfectly vivid. Check out the reddit thread for "earthporn", it's just collections of ultra hi-res photos of beautiful landscapes and it really helps show off what the screen of the Pixel C is capable of.
Sorry about your bad experience, but I don't think (bar some slight hiccups) that that level of disappointment is the norm for the rest of the Pixel C people. Good luck, man.

could be difficult to find it but requires you to press on the front and back of the area to get it to click, sounds like aluminum can or bag once it clicks.
So you get a DOA device and suddenly you're buying something else?
Sorry for jumping in on that, but DOA (dead on arrival) devices happen all the time from almost all manufacturers (not just tablets, I bought a new car which had a broken gearbox from the factory) I get why you're bummed, but if you'd had 3 in a row I would understand. Give it a fair chance at least...
I use mine literally every day since Christmas and haven't had a single issue with it.

Nope. No issues for me other than the ones that can be directly attributed to being on the Android N preview build.

Decided to keep my Nexus 6!

Hello,
So I'm on my second Nexus 6. I originally had a Midnight Blue 32GB but I sold it after picking up a Cloud White 64GB when Amazon had them for $250. I have had it for about a year now and it still works great.
Well, I sporadically listed it on Craigslist to sell and started to look at new phones. That is when I realized, there is nothing out right now that I really want. Sure, a Google Pixel would be nice but that price tag....
So being I decided to stick with my Nexus 6, I want to make it like new again! I just ordered a New OEM Mid Frame, New OEM Back Panel, and New OEM Battery. It all cost me under $30. My display is flawless, has always had a screen protector but my frame has some dings and my back panel is starting to come up on the corners a little. I figure a new battery and some new housing will make it like new again.
Anyone have any tips on cleaning the speaker grills? I figure they may be easier to clean when I have it apart. I plan to try to clean them out along with the charger port when I have it apart.
Any chance you can list where you got your replacement frame? Thanks.
Links to the 3 products you replaced would be nice, also I used a slightly damp toothbrush to clean the speaker grills.
Good choice!
mine still looks like new being I keep it in a Supcase.
I purchased the mid frame on Amazon for $9.99
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01AL4IS3U/ref=ya_st_dp_summary
The battery and back cover I got off eBay. They are all over on there. The battery is a Motorola EZ30.
I decided to keep mine as well! The phone still rocks. Far as speaker grills I use a fine pick and pop the metal pieces out and use a toothbrush or qtip

Same here, I want to change my Nexus 6 but it seems I can't find anything else I like to replace it.
I was thinking on Nexus 6P but I've heard a lot of issues with it turning off/bootloop/death so Im going away from it.
I've had mine for more than a year now and it doesn't have any single scratch/mark/dent (Always had it on Poetic Case + Intelliarmor screen protector)
I still enjoy and appreciate the benefits of my Nexus 6 compared to other phones out there, also not wanting to spend many hundreds of dollars on a Pixel XL that would be just OK in comparison.
My *only* reason for considering a future model change is the camera, which is incredibly laggy (especially if location tagging is turned on, but even without that set). For now, I continue to put up with the shutter lag, since it's been happening since the first year and I'm used to it.

I order me a Mate 9 is the same Screen size and the rest over all should (is) better as on the N6. Don't get me wrong i love my N6, is the best that i ever had until now, but it's time for a new and better Phone :good:

I have to agree! The camera is the only thing I don't like about my Nexus 6. Lucky for me, I hardly ever use it. About the only time I do is when I am taking a picture of something to post or sell.
I use a modified version of Google's camera called Camera nx1. Also I unencrypted my phone and for me the camera lag was gone.

Can you tell us where to find this app? I've tried looking it up (Googling) but I was unsure which one is it.
Thanks
I was hell-bent on replacing my Nexus 6. It was getting super laggy (I was part of the Android N developer's preview), it had battery issues, etc. But before I jumped ship, I did a complete wipe + factory reset of my phone. I deleted every single byte of information on it. Then I flashed Google's factory images (+TWRP). I also used the Nexus Root Toolkit to flash the unencrypted kernel (or whatever)
Finally, I gave myself a nice new wallpaper.
It's been amazingly better since then. My battery is great, the lag is gone. And I know it sounds silly, but between flashing and the new wallpaper, it feels like a new phone. This will be my first smartphone ever that I've kept for 2+ years. Maybe in a few months I'll start looking (and I'll be looking at the Chinese phones, like Huawei, Xiomi, Honor, etc) because I ain't got no time for no $800 Pixel phone.

Hey man, thanks for the link. It looks (hopefully it's not just a placebo effect) a little bit faster when taking a picture and maybe even processing a little bit faster. I'll try it longer and see how will respond.

Your welcome man. I'm not sure what happened to the original thread here on XDA. I couldn't find it either. My wife's and my nephews nexus 6s both use this camera apk. Also when I unencrypted my phone the camera lag is completely gone. Not sure if it has to do with the camera image having to become encrypted as it's processing,. Not sure. Anyways let me know what you think. Also sent you another PM.

Me too
I was so hyped about the Pixel XL ordered thru Big Red and waited two months to get in stock only to find out they screwed up the order and they told me it would near the end of march before they could fill the order. I cancelled and stayed with my Nexus 6. Mine is only a 32gb and I would like bigger storage, the only thing I'm considering is maybe a 6P over the 6 but other than that I'm not upgrading.

I too replaced my battery with a new supposed "OEM" one from ebay...and it didn't change a damn thing. I still only get about 2/3 of a day out of it. When the phone was new I'd get a day and a half!
I then recently bought a brand new Mate 8 and am less than impressed with the IPS LCD Screen, vibrate mode and battery life among other things.
Would love to give "Shamu" a new life, she's been an amazing phone over the last year or so. I too have never kept a phone for more than a year.

Pixel 3a first impressions

Tried to post this in the real life review section but it wouldn't let me.
So I had a 1, then a 2, and then a 1 again. I've had the 3a for a week now and although that's a very short time to have impressions, some things are that obvious. First, very often when I put the phine in my pocket and then take it out, the phone is unlocked and a bunch of things have happened. Thank god it hasn't called someone at an inappropriate time... Second, GA does not understand me anymore. Previously, it was nearly flawless. Third, I'm still stuck on Sprint. The previous phones, although also starting out on Sprint, learned very quickly that t-mobile is way better in my area. And I copied the old phone to the new with all settings and stuff, so the new one should know. Forced switching with Fi-switch doesn't help. And last, I don't see any improvement in speed over the 1. Both phones are plenty fine in this regard, with some stutter here and there, but I would expect the new one to be at least somewhat better. So there it is, not impressed at all...

Yeah, but the 1 was considered Google's flagship phone. I know it was 3 years ago and whatever components they used in that should have already made it to the budget category, but apparently not.
When Google planned this phone, I think there were a few things they considered and one was probably not to completely ruin their flagship line, it wasn't doing great already and even now I think the Pixel 3a is cannibalizing the Pixel 3 now, but also the Pixel 4 has to feel as a step-up so they ] cut corners in many places for the 3a.
My dissatisfaction after 2 months using :
1. The screen. Lately it's been very sunny and the screen is hard to make out on max brightness. It actually looks worse than some 4-5 year old phones, even if it's OLED.
2. The sound quality and Sound effects. The speakers on this phone just not doing it for me. Could be because the phone made of plastic or the speakers aren't well insulated and causes some vibration . The sound effects on this phone is like..this is the first phone I'm considering downloading new sound effects or make my own, because I just don't like them.
Other things, like the camera and the fingerprint reader and the software are great, but regardless what reviewers say, I can't escape the feel of it, of being a cheap phone and the screen and the sound quality only confirms it. Good thing I only paid $180 for it with a trade-in.
Just joined #teampixel today - my 3a (not 3a XL, as I originally planned) is currently charging. First off, the fingerprint sensor is faster than the S7 it will replace - a serious surprise. The data import (also from the S7) is fast as heck, too. Why the 3a (instead of the XL)? Amusingly, it has to do with TWRP - it's ready for the smaller of the two (just not for the XL yet). Other than that, I kept the same choices otherwise (including the color - a tasteful Just Black). good thing I'm giving myself a week to get used to it - I'm going to need it.
4 months later, I sold the 3a and got a 3. Overall it was a fine phone but it turned out I really needed a waterproof phone. Kinda wanted to get the 4 but decided to let it mature a bit first.
So, off to the 3 forum Good luck to y'all 3a'ers
I am looking to buy 3a and would like to know if proximity sensor issue (I assume that's what it was) described in original post is widespread. If so - was it ever fixed?

I never had any issues with proximity sensor or noticed any other issue. In contrary I was even surprised that the pixel 3a has some pretty nice features which are not even promoted, e.g. it supports RSAP connections to my car which is very difficult to find nowadays.

Can you explain? I still use original Moto X with JellyBean and not up to date on any Android version after that, so I may be missing something. How does it make sense for the phone to randomly answer calls while in the pocket? My current phone certainly doesn't do that.

Not every device has a pocket mode. It's as simple as that.
It's not like calls are automatically answered, it's just really an issue if you keep the screen facing your leg in the pocket.
However as I've stated it is possible to get a pocket mode if you root and use edxposed (there is probably a way to do it without edxposed and just root but I haven't really looked into it)

Anyone upgrading to pixel 4?

Just curious what people's thoughts were
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I got one yesterday after the live event and put it in my cart then I realized I can't justify $946 for a phone that has a few better features than my GP2XL. I love my Pixel2xl and spending that much money for essentially a better camera, graphics, and processor (none of which are THAT important to me) doesn't make sense to me. So I cleared my cart and bought a new case for my GP2XL instead for $11 on Amazon. Like Pixel 3, the Pixel 4 just doesn't wow me enough to spend that kind of money. I am not a astrophotographer so that doesn't matter to me.
I will eventually but waiting for a better deal than just 100 off. I was disappointed by the value of trade ins but I'll probably hold onto my pixel 2 until the photo upload promo expires.
Things I'm looking forward to on the pixel 4.
1) snappier performance with hopefully better memory management
2) the faster Google Assistant with continued conversation like feature. I'm a heavy voice command user and cutting down on the amount of times I say the launch phrase will be welcomed.
3) wireless charging. I think it's time for me to get it back now that my family is all on wireless charging. The pads can be used for multiple devices now.
4) better display. I've gotten used to the pixel 2 display but always long for more when I look at Samsung or apple OLED displays.
5) soli seems a bit gimmicky but if it allows me to change songs in my car without having to touch it, then that will be huge for me. Easier than me having to buy a new car or a new head unit.
Things I worry about
1) that face id better be damn good. Smart Lock is starting to get wonky. My watch doesn't keep my phone unlocked at all times like it's supposed to. Keeps saying locked manually.
2) original photo upload. It's something I think won't miss until it's gone. Sharing albums with friends and not having it compressed takes the sting out of not having something like iMessage which doesn't compress photos. Now i have to figure out a different way to share the full quality pictures with them
3) battery life.... ALWAYS BATTERY LIFE!

Nope I bought 2 refurbished 2xls so I'm set for the Long haul. I despise glass backs.

I couldn't bring myself to buy the Pixel 3 but I bought two pixel 4XL's yesterday. I debated hard about doing it because there really isn't anything wrong with my 2XL and it does everything I need it to do. I'm the person that upgrades every year and in the end I just couldn't go past two years without a new phone. I might kick myself later but what can you do....lol
Nope, no upgrade for me,i had it in my cart and cleared it the moment i realized it doesn't have a fingerprint scanner, I'm ready to upgrade but not to a phone without fingerprint scanner

I too, was going to get it as I figured hell, it's a pixel 4xl and will be perfect to work with especially here in these forums. I even had it ordered for a full day, but alas, today I cancelled it as it simply is too much for not good enough specs. I do believe in two days I'm going to order the one plus 7t. (Just my thoughts)
Yep. Do I need it? Nope! Am I looking forward to trying something sorta-kinda new....you betchya! I don't buy much stuff ever, but every 2 years, I treat myself to a new device :good:
I think i also keep my pixel for another year.its still a solid phone with good bat life and an awesome cam.
I just received a complete new pixel from Google cause of warranty issues .and this after almost 2 year's haha.
This time i will stay a bit on pie because 10 ****ed my phone up somehow before.
Yes, Pixel 4 XL. Way better camera, best display on the market, onboard AI no need for data connection, live transcribe, motion sense, fastest face unlock, faster CPU, 6GB RAM and afree chrome book. Let's be honest most of these features cannot be backported to the Pixel 2, maybe some camera tweaks. The transcribe required the new AI chip and service so unlikely. And my Pixel is starting to show it's age, likes to stutter a little now and again.
Many people moaned the Pixel 2 only had 4GB RAM, so there's a reason for them to upgrade.
Can't see why upgrade honestly, I only got the phone a year ago, and it's performing pretty well.
But pixel 5 will be a day one buy that's for sure.
Damn I'm glad I'm not the only one with a p2xl, thought I was slacking on my new tech. I really just love this phone! XD
Same boat as Badger50. I ordered one with delivery of next week. If it doesn't wow me, I'll return it and probably get the OP7T. If the 7T doesn't do it for me, then P2xl lives on.
Pre-ordered it immediately when the Google Store was refreshed. I thought about doing the trade-in and even ordered the box for it but I think I'll try my luck with Swappa instead. I'm sure I'll get more than Google's $143 offer with all the cases and accessories I have.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I'm still undecided on whether I'm going to get one or not. I'm still using my pixel 2XL, and it performs just as well as the day I bought it 2 years ago, no joke. I skipped the 3XL--no explanation necessary. I was thinking I might wait and see what the 4A looks like when that comes out, but I'll probably cave in and get the 4XL eventually. However, I'm not pre-ordering it or even thinking about actually buying it until I see that root is available for it. I pre-ordered the pixel 2XL and it royally sucked to go without root for the first few weeks.

1. It's looking very fast and even though right now it's able to unlock with eyes closed (not a big deal for me) I'm sure they're working on adding an eyes open option. It was in the leaks.
2. High quality is plenty for average people but One Drive is super affordable. 100GB for $20/year isn't a lot at all.
3. Really curious how good/bad it'll be. I used to get as much as 7-8 hours SOT my first 6-8 months with my Pixel 2 XL.

Ready To Take The Plunge

It's time for a new device. I'm leaning heavily towards OP. I was looking at both the 8 and 8 Pro and really want the 8 Pro. I'm on Verizon, anything I should know about getting it activated? 5G is not important as it's gonna be a while before it makes it to my area. I also don't use any of the Verizon services either, so that's a moot point.
Last device was a P3XL and I made the mistake of getting it from Big Red, actually had no choice, but it's the last time I'll ever buy from them or one that's BL locked. Pretty unhappy with Google too.....
Pixel 3 XL, Yep, Crashed It.....
.....Again, and Again, and Again......
If camera is important you may be disappointed.
Coming from a Pixel 2XL I feel my OP8 Pro camera is barely a match.
There is no question the hw is there and WHEN pictures are better they are much shaper, however it's hard to get the consistency I was getting with my old Pixel.
Gcam does help a bit.
Everything else about the phone is mostly good...
First device had a green line after 3 weeks of use on the side of the screen. Amazon replaced it thankfully so I ended up getting the extended warranty on the new one.
Also 5ghz wifi is problatic for me but hopefully that will be fixed by a patch.

Camera is great so no idea what the 2nd post is talking about, no bloat, fast (very fast) decent audio, superb screen.
I can't fault it.
If I had to moan, I'd say the waterfall screen can be annoying. Especially for choosing a case and accidental touch, but you used to it.
Best phone I've had and I've had lots.
You'll read a lot about screen issues, touch issues but they affect a tiny amount of users, no more than any common issue would affect any other device, all phones have their problems but this one for me is pretty much perfect.

That is totally not true. Lol ADB can remove any bloat on any phone, regardless of root status..
Just FYI mine came with zero bloat, UK based.
Do it. My last 4 phones were the Google Nexus 6P, Pixel 2xl, 3xl and 4xl. Direct from Google. All good phones with exceptional cameras, especially the 2xl, 3xl and 4xl.
With that being said, the 8 Pro is the best phone I've ever used. Awesome display, speedy and beautiful.
The camera is very good too. It won't be as good as your 3xl, but it's pretty darn close. And the wide angle lens is great, which isn't on the pixel's.
I'm on verizon too and while there was an issue with activation when the phone was released, that has been ironed out.
In addition, oneplus comes through with lots of updates which is something I wan't sure about when I made the switch from Google.
You won't be disappointed.

Thanks, that's the info that I was looking to verify. I've read that there is a problem getting them activated and I've read that it's been ironed out.
One more question, if I may. Every device that I've had I've bought a OtterBox Defender case for it. I don't mind the extra bulk but I work in a construction type industry and I like the extra protection they offer. Currently they do not offer that case for the 8 Pro. Do you know of another brand that will offer similar protection?

You're talking history; I'm talking future. There is a difference, the past is not always a predictor of the future.

Sorry, can't help with the case.
I'm a minimal case guy as I work at a desk every day.
I have the 1+ Sandstone case, which is great and I have the Rhinoshield Crashguard bumper case which I've had on 5 phones now and love.
It will take a fall with the best of them (I just dropped mine onto concrete the other day and not a scratch on the phone), but probably wouldn't be good in a construction situation.
I think UAG makes as case that's comparable to the otterbox and it gets pretty good reviews.
Good Luck

I have another question. How exactly does the $150 accessory voucher work at the Oneplus store? Does it only apply to certain items?

Figured out how the voucher works. Got the Warp 30 car charger. Should see it in about a week.
Now to wait patiently.... [emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787]

Congrats! Your going to like it! Cheers
Anything special I need to know for activation? Big Red is my carrier. I've read about CDMA-less... Planning on swapping the SIM over from my P3XL.

The OP8Pro is here!!!!
Took it out of the box, turned it on, skipped through setup, enabled dev options - usb debugging - toggled oem unlocking, rebooted to fastboot, and unlocked the BL! That was soooooooo easy!!!!!!
My last device was BL perma-locked, stupid Verizon. I'm back into the custom Mods/OS scene!!!!!
Can't wait to start contributing again!!!!!!!
