I'm new to the Glacier scene. And I've read through some of the rooting threads. It looks like they're a couple of different methods for rooting the Glacier, although it looks like some people with newer devices seem to have problems with a couple of the methods.
All I'd like to do is delete some of the stock bloatware. Do I need S-Off to accomplish this on the 4G? What would be the easiest way to approach this? At this point I don't see the need for an OC, or a custom rom, etc... I know before root/S-OFF was obtained on the G2 that people figured out how to go in and disable the stock apps. Is there a way to do this on the 4G?
You'll need root access to delete the bloatware, but it's relatively easy. You can use grankin's s=off root script visionary method (which can easy be reverted with the PD15IMG.zip file) in the resource bible and then delete what you don't want. I've deleted a massive amount of apps, more than any guide I've seen, with no side effects. The positive of rooting the phone is that you can install CW recovery and backup your phone before making changes, so even if you delete something important you can restore and not lose data.
Thanks! I know that someone (cyan?) used to publish a list of applications that were safe to remove. If I remember correctly it was a list of applications and all of their dependencies. Is there anything like this for the 4G?
I just google searched at first, found one on androidforums. Then I just got experimental and started deleting anything I didn't use. As long as you keep that backup it takes about 5 minutes to get yourself back to a working state after making a mistake. I never did, kept it simple and only deleted things I recognized and had a market replacement for or never opened.

Cool that works for me!
Correct me if I'm wrong (of course you will), but simply rooting the phone and deleting the apps doesn't actually do anything. Its more of hiding the app from the menu. To truly get rid of the bloatware, you need to install another ROM.
I've rooted the phone once, deleted apps, unrooted and sure enough those apps were back.

You are correct. if you do not turn s=off you are only hiding those applications v. deleting from the memory bank of the phone. If you turn s=off you can truly delete them w/o worrying about them returning.

I believe that, that's what happens when you attempt to delete apps with S-ON; they'll 're appear' after a reboot.
You need S-OFF for true write access. You don't need a custom rom to delete apps with S-OFF, because you've got true access to your device. You can delete whatever you want with S-OFF. That's my understanding anyway.
once you root your phone, you can uninstall all the bloatware you want with titanium backup

Sorry to be rude!, im new to this "rooting" business. Now i used to be fond with "debranding" sony ericssons by flashing generic firmware via SEtools.
Now my phone doesnt have any "orange" branding on it apart from a orange app which cannot be deleted. But i cannot change my apps permissions or delete what i want to delete on the phone and i believe rooting the phone will accomplish this.
So iv had a look, im running android 2.3.2 with a .184 base. What does this mean for me?, now i realise i can do the same to my phone if i unlock the bootloader, but that means i cannot use SEUS right? Im trying to run gingerbreak yet it just keeps running and running....
Am i right in saying it will be easier to root my phone as im still on 2.3.2?..
Thanks

Thanks for people that helped, i wanted to be fussy and not risk loosing the SEUS function If you get into a bit of a fiddle: shutdown, remove battery, restart, place phone in flight mode to prevent interruptions, kill all running apps, ensure USB debugging is enabled! then exploit gingerbreak and LEAVE it. Only remove bloat AFTER OTA update as mentioned.

Just stick with what your doing gingerbreak. Can take some time to get root access.
Or you could use this method if you can unlock bootloader on your phone. do ota to .145 only if your bootloader is locked, (dont do ota if you already have unlocked bootloader it will brick your device) then unlock bootloader and flash pre rooted .145 system image.

I havnt unlocked my bootloader so itl be locked, ideally id like to keep it like this for SEUS updates and warranty. Does gingerbreak work with .184?, and does this .184 mean i have generic firmware already on the phone but just not rooted? And i take it .145 will be 2.3.3?, thought it would be easier on 2.3.2
P.S- I am using V1.2 as this is the latest
Cheers for the reply!
Yes gingerbreak will root 2.3.2 Rom but ur can take a while. Once its rooted it should stay rooted even after ota

Righty ho, the only different after this finally working is an app called superuser... I still cannot modify application permissions or delete applications of the phone such as the standard games showing in the menu like bruce lee etc.
So how do i find if my phone is rooted, and is there actually any pros to this :S:S

You have root. Now you need applications to do what you say.
Superuser is there to grant those apps permission.

Cheers dudes!, i think i get it now. Basically im ALLOWED to access all roots and files now but usually an application is used to achieve this but am correct in saying modifications can be done manually?
So ideally, update now to 2.3.3 and i can still install apps to remove bloatware etc?. Where as if i touch anything then update it may fail as apps are missing?

You are correct broski. I would recommend TitaniumBackup and Root Explorer to get started.
Always make sure you freeze stuff with TiBu before you delete it. In fact, there's a list of apps you can safely remove (I believe in the Themes & Apps section) that you may want to check out. I would link it but I'm at my iPad.
And yes, I would update before you touch anything.

I used SEUS to update my phone to latest firmware. Flashed phone and downgraded to 2.3.2. Re set up all my accounts, installed TiBackup busybox, Astro, Superbox and Gingerbreak.
Before I flashed, Gingerbreak took about 5mins max to root, reeboot and finish.
Now, i have let it sit for over an hour and its still not doing anything???
Do I need to flash my phone again (hope not, takes too long lol) to get it to work? I flashed the Generic .184 that was posted on xda. My phone tells me im on 2.3.2 Build 3.0.A.2.184.
What am I doing wrong?
And yes, I am a noob before you ask lol!
Oh and does it matter if the battery is below 50%?

Well 50% is minimum i stick to when carrying out any sort of flashing on my previous SE's. I had my charger in the whole time as mine is turning out to be a simple gingerbreak exploit as my phone came with .184 2.3.2 already
Ok, from the top:
New phone purchased on 2.3.2
Rooted using gingerbreak
Deleted some Bloat
Went to update to 2.3.3 and couldnt due to deleted bloat.
Used SEUS to fix phone and update to 2.3.3
Used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119074 and followed it to the letter except didnt delete user data.
Ended up rooted on 2.3.3 - Hooray!
Frooze bloat this time so not to incur same problems as last time.
Rebooted phone and then disaster!!!
Phone kept getting to the Sony Ericsson screen then would reset over and over.
Flashed 2.3.2 again - this time including user data.
Set up all my accounts again, installed all my apps, made sure i could send and recieve calls/messages etc.
Tried to root using gingerbreak but it just hangs at the 1st screen for over an hour.
And this is where I am now. Im on 2.3.2, cant seem to root and dont want to update till i can root lol.
I have tried taking the battery out, lewaving for an hour and then doing the root process again to no avail.

Hmmm, shouldnt your phone still be rooted? If you play with the boot loader that will be why SEUS wont work. Bit odd really, should just be able to flash .184 2.3.2, ensure boot loader is locked, install and run gingerbread v1.2 exploit without ANY interruption then update OTA
Hold the Fort!!!!
Just tried gingerbreak again, as Im reading your post, phone has just re-booted.
Ok, now Im rooted!!
Going for the OTA update now. Fingers crossed!
EDIT: Bugger, need to charge up the phone update won't work when under 50%.
I think I'll be ok now.
Its when i come to the next bit. This time I think I'll delete the bloat but keep a note on what I delete so if i need them back at least i know what to look for, and if all else fails i can use SEUS again. Im NEVER unlocking my bootloader lol!
Don't delete any boats... What if 2.3.4 comes out and you want to do another ota update? Last thing you want to do is flash back to 2.3.2 and start all over again. Use titanium to freeze the bloatware.

Yeah it happens sometimes. I once had to reboot my phone twice and start gingerbreak again before it rooted. I have froze all the bloat i want gone instead of uninstalling. It doesnt free up space on the internal memory but it frees up ram. So reboot is like 1 minute and has the same effects uninstalling would do. No lag e.t.c
Just move your gameloft games to your sd card using titanium backup (free version) will free up internal memory. Saves the trouble of having to reinstall everything when you next want ota update in october. I use Bloat Freezer to freeze the apps i dont want running only £0.61. Does same job as titanium when freezing apps which is £3.83.
Yeah freezins apps is next on the list, or even just deleting them aslong as there ALL backed up. Has anybody backed up all of the apps?, would be a good idea for everybody. Some kind of complete SE 2.3.3 complete backup would be useful for everybody. That way people can delete EVERYTHING they want and not have to worry about SEUS as a restore can be completed Might do it and upload them all into one if anybody is interested??...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036249 Yeah all the apps that come on the phone are on that thread. But i havent uninstalled anything just froze as i have said and moved the games to sd and i have 200+ mb on internal memory and 240 mb of ram which is more than enough. I can then just unfreeze all the bloat i froze and do the ota update with no problems.
These are questions for thoses that have used the official update from motorola.
1) Did you have to unroot before updating?
2) Did you have to wipe your phone before the update?
3) Was the update successful?
4) If it was successful, were you able to successfully root again? If so how?
5) If successfully rooted, were you then able to get rid of crapware from ATT?
6) Did you have any problems with the update detecting a non-oem battery? I bought my phone used off ebay so not sure if the battery is oem or not.
Thanks for your help. Im not ready to brick my phone, or not be able to charge my battery if the update doesnt work.
I was able to successfully update my wife's phone this weekend. Her's was not rooted before the update. I wanted to successfully root her's before I update mine. I was able to root her phone with SuperOneClick. After rooting I removed some of the preinstall AT&T stuff.
I'm planning on flashing mine back to stock before updating.

Upgraded, but...
I successfully updated to the motorola froyo official release. Im loving how much faster everything runs. Able to root successfully with superoneclick and used titanium backup to remove att crapware. However here is my issue. I used link2sd previously on eclair. Had about 50+ apps on phone with about 40% give or take free. So I was so excited about the apps to sd in froyo. Well, I tried putting back all my apps, using an app I got from market for apps2sd and link2sd for those unable to move per the app. With link2sd, I lost no phone space but as the apps that could be moved got moved to the sd via the market app, my phone space went BYE BYE. Down to 0% free. WTH is going on? I just did a factory reset and am going to try just link2sd and see what happens. Anyone else running into this problem or am I alone in this?
Ok, so
I used just link2sd and had no problems with memory. For some reason, using any app2sd app or the built in move to sd eats up my memory. Makes no sense to me at all, but I now have all my apps back, linked and at 40% free space. Strange.
This is why you should read....
Link2d... moves apk, davlik cache, and lib file...
App2d just moves the apk... so the cache and the library are still installed on /data/

Edit: you can use titanium backup to take stuff off installed by apps2sd

Im having a problem with the phone freezing up now. Only way to remedy is to remove battery. Anyone else?
Yup... though for me its not freezing... the screen shuts off... its still running though...
I could charge it... and somehow once either voice command or vlingo started up... and the white notification led that I didn't know the phone had was flashing

Yea i'm having the same issue. I used to have this same issue when I had the motorola backflip. It would always freeze up th first couple times after I flashed a new ROM. After a coulpe times of restarting and pulling the battery, eventually it just fixed itself...hopefully this is the case with this and its not a permanent problem
I have not seen any freezing issues with either of the 2 Flipsides that I have updated.
I hope so too, cuz having to pull the battery at least 5-8 times a day is really frigging annoying! At least it starts much faster than eclair did.
Hello!
I would like to ask for some help about updaters since I was reading some posts of the forum and the mixed results/reports may seems somewhat confuse, so , I would like to ask about help with info about these details in order to try to make an succesfull update froma Beta installed flipside phone without brick it.
1) Anyone of the succesfull updaters were made from a phone with BETA 2.2 installed?
2) In case that update was made from a BETA 2.2 phone, which was the way used to do the succesfull update
a-With Official 2.2 file and Moto windows software?
b-With Official 2.2 file and Linux flash-sbf software?
c-With Official 2.2 file and the in-phone menu option for update.
d-With Official 2.2 file in SD card RENAMED to the name: update.zip and using option in boot recovery menu?
3) Any Update to Official Froyo 2.2 from a BETA 2.2 installed phone was succesfull AFTER a downgrade to eclair 2.1 rom official rom file and WITHOUT BRICKING the phone in the process?
Thank You very much for kind help and best regards!

Sometimes when I try to download/update an app I'll get an error after it's done downloading that says it can't install and it'll keep trying until I restart my phone and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't also another issue whenever I turn my phone on or off it'll make apps dissappear and the only way I can access them is to do it in the playstore and I'll have to Uninstall them through the playstore and then reinstall them to make them visible
Are you getting the PlayStore error 492 message when updating or installing an app? If so, I've been trying to figure this out for the past few weeks. I ended doing a complete fresh install of the ROM I'm currently using, which is the MOAR ROM, and I'm still getting the dang errors. I've cleared the playstore cache, data, uninstalled, etc. It either works for a bit or nothing...if youre having the same issues as myself, I wish I could help.....

Hmmm I don't think so I'm getting error code 963 it's weird cuz while the app is downloading it'll say 86mb for instance then it'll go to 90mb then it'll go back down to like 82 and the whole time the description is like flickering almost like you're refreshing the page but I am also on Moar do you think it could be a problem with the rom? And what version are you on? Og5 or pb1?
Still on OC4 and haven't dorked around with any of the apps in months. I'm going to flash back to NCG and root then install upgrade to lollipop by Muniz_ri and see what happens. Since you are rooted, go into root explorer and navigate to /data/app/ Do you see any duplicates in that directory? If so, the fix is simple. There may not be enough space due to duplicate apps.

reflashing the rom worked until i tried to restore everything wit titanium back up then for some reason the cpu was too high and kept turning my phone off so i reflashed it and only restored certain apps and everything is working a okay now but i think that might have been the case before because for some reason i had so much space taken up i have almost everything on my phone in my sd card and my phones a 16 gb and it was saying i only had a few hundred mb and now i had 6 gb after i reflashed and im down to like 2 and a half gb (i assume cuz i restored the apps and it stuck stuff on my phone instead of sd card but idk)

After installing MOAR and setting everything up, and not to say that this was the culprit, i installed the LP SS V17 and it all happened again. So, I reflashed the ROM and installed the SS rooting tools V6 and reluctantly haven't had any issues 'yet'?. As far as storage goes I have 7.8gb available now. Have you looked into your hidden folders or cache on the SD card to see if there were any unused apps/data that could be deleted? It's running so far so good at the moment but I haven't tried to update any apps yet. I may check to see what happens...
Veid71, thanks for checking in and for your suggestions. I appreciate the help and hopeyou get your issue with the Play Store resolved. If i have any helpful suggestions, I'll be sure to let you know. Sorry to go off topic a bit.
Fellow users I don't want to steer/scare anyone reading this to think to not install/use the LP SS recovery apk. Its a great and useful app that JrKruse modified from the original version for our LP devices. I'm not saying anything is wrong with it or it may "break" something and I'm not even 100% sure SS was the problem, it could have been something else that may have been messing up the Play Store update issue. So please don't let my posts deter you from using the app.

Yeah, I agree. Could be a bad download or the app(s) didn't agree with another...I'm glad that we're both able to get our devices running correctly. Just wish I knew what was the issue(s). I posted in the LP SS thread about my issues and JrKruse was helping me out. It helped for a bit but went back. The odd thing is that I never had any FC's...oh, well....Again, thank you for your suggestions and responding back. That's what the XDA community is about. Helping and sharing with others, without the bitterness(hehe)as i, at times, see throughout these threads...thanks again, A
I had this prob. also. I had changed download directory to ext. SD card. Changed it back to default location, problem solved. Don't know why won't write to ext. sd.
Random thought, did you use Aptoide to install/update any apps? I had massive issues with buggy apps from Aptoide, and Google Play Services was one of them.

Not that i can recall but ill keep that in mind. Did you get yours worked out?
Yeah. That was months ago and it took forever to realize what caused it lol.
I have always rooted and used Titanium Backup to set up a new phone but this time I want to leave it alone, more and more apps are checking for root and certified/uncertified, last week I could not even get a PizzaExpress app because it needs 6.0+ & unrooted (had to unroot my old S2 on Lineage), I have decided I want my banking apps back and other things I lost over the years, so no root or customising (yet! hehe).
With that in mind what is the best way to restore, obviously Google will take care of a lot of it but things like call logs, sms, bluetooth, some app data, in the past I would selectively use Titanium to restore anything I found missing but without root, what to use? Helium, mi mover or something else.
My S4 is rooted but stock right now so calls, SMS, rejection lists even wallpaper is synced with Samsung, I guess there will be no way to access these backups from the A1
You can root via Magisk. It doesn't break the SafetyNet. Moreover, you can hide it from certain apps. All the banking apps work if you root via Magisk.

I did see that and did think about it, it's been a bit cat and mouse hiding root for years now and I can only see it getting worse as android secuity ramps up, I thought I would keep this phone clean as long as I could resist
I might go with the root, I could always remove it again I guess.
You will not resist for a long time, you know that, all of us know that
I bought this phone today online and expect to receive it within days and I was thinking exactly like you, then log on to XDA 10 minutes ago searching for rooting threads to be ready when I receive it

When it arrives, it should come on N, so I guess I could root it with Magisk, get it up and running how I like it then restore the boot image, remove Magisk and allow the O OTA and everything will be 100% stock again?

Yup. Magisk does not touch system files. It will be 100% stock without any issues.

You are right there lol
I am starting to think we are beginning to lose more than we gain, I comes to something when a stupid pizza shop app checks for root!

Thinking about this and reading the thread, does Titanium not need Busybox installed? busybox installs to "system" and would stop OTA?

I just installed Titanium Backup without installing busybox and it works. (Busybox maybe included in the custom ROM I've installed, I dunno).
I think you are being unnecessarily cautious about Root. Almost all the banking apps work even when Magisk is installed. You can enjoy root without worrying about the safetynet.

Thanks for that.
I'm comfortable with root now after loads of reading of that thread but was just being cautious no to allow any app to change the system folder once root is running.
I also see this method of root cant be used on N so my idea of rooting / restoring / unrooting and upgrading to O will not work so I will just upgrade to Oreo / root / restore and then decide if I want to keep root or not.

Yup, you can upgrade to Oreo, root, and restore.
Also, if there are any issues afterwards, you can always flash the official fastboot ROM by MiFlash Tool without wiping your internal storage.

Hi there, you could root with magisk , restore your data then flash stock rom through mi flash tool . Make sure to select the "save user data " option before flash. This way you will be 100 % stock and take ota's.
I suggest you to enable the camera 2 api using set prop method by flex1911 ( the one which doesn't uses magisk) before flashing stock rom.
Cheers
Edit : my advice is literally Same from the guy above. Didn't see that. . Saw your post , think that i can help and replayed

Thanks, I think I will just have to devote a good long time to this, at least I will have both phones side by side so I can keep trying all the restore methods known
