Should I root? - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hi guys. I know it's a silly question because it depends on the user but should i root my moto g5 plus.
The phone's battery easily lasts full day.
I don't see any lag.
But i do want that notification led.
Tell your opinions!

I wish I hadn't. It's been a pain at times when I need to use certain apps, and there's times where I get annoying bugs. Whenever I have time to waste, and don't need to use my phone for a couple hours, I'm going back to stock.

Honestly, no... Root won't improve battery significantly, won't fix lag, or get you a notification LED, if these are your only real issues.
The *power* LED is hard wired to the charging circuit, there are root apps that can make it act like a notification light, but only when you have external power applied so it's implementation is pretty limited.

Xperia x8 battery life

Hi guys i know there are lots of similar posts about battery life etc but cant find the answer im looking for after a search of this forum as all answers seem to be on rooted devices, she does not want her x8 rooted and im really getting it in the neck for upgrading her in the first place lol.
My girlfriend recently got the 2.1-update 1 via pc companion and thats when the battery problems started. The battery drain problem has actually been getting progressively worse since this. This morning (after yet another full night charging 100%) after 30 mins of getting up today the battery was down to 83 %. I have already uninstalled maps updates, not that she ever used it anyway.
So my question is : is there a solution to this without rooting and/or having a custom ROM? becuase she making my life a misery lol.
Thanks in advance guys and sorry for the similar post

Well, 1st thing as Dx said. reboot after using wifi, 3g, music. reboot to make everything fresh.. but there's no other way to save battery without rooting I think. because I helped my gf installed a custom ROM for her and she said that the battery life changed, and it's way different than a original ROM. How come she doesn't wanna go custom? Sorry for my bad english.

Nah, rooting makes the difference. IMO Froyo ROMs have good battery life.
Well i think she might well have to go custom because the battery life is a joke now, nearly rendering her device unusable, think she just frightened cos i did her pc companion update and kinda blames me for the crap battery now, il have a read around the x8 forum on how to root.
Thanks everyone, apreciate it
Just try to keep off all things you don't need: Wifi, Bluetooth, Synchronization, 3G. also unninstall apps you don't need and do not use app killers to save RAM.
I think that is all you can do without rooting.

My friend, less RAM is actually a good thing. I've read through the web. just don't auto kill ALL the apps, kill those apps that when it doesn't look right or freezes. The more RAM you freed, the more battery it will drain. Serious.

I'm just a noob trying to help.
use a task killer and disable all what you don't need like bluetooth, data traffic, gps and wifi. yes i know my english is bad^^
disable wifi, gps, bluetooth and data traffic. stock 2.1update rom should get you about 3 days with those disabled. any apps that need them will ask you to switch them on again anyway. It's a little annoying to get used to at first especially when you're used to a fone that lasts a week without charge so I can understand how she feels especially if she only wants to text and do a few calls.
If you don't use wifi, 3g gps and rest of the s**t you should probbably buy a dumy phone.
With some "normal" usage you can be happy if it lasts for a day/day and a half.
2-3 is really success.
You do get a charger in the box with the phone you know?
Use your phone, stop wasting time on battery monitoring.

yeah but the idea is it's a MOBILE fone.. You dont want it plugged into the damn socket all the time!
If you need to use the GPS, WIFI etc. the app will ask you to switch it on so wheres the harm in turning it all off until it's required if it saves having to plug the thing in every day?!?
Nobody stated you should keep all the functions on.
But it should be understandable that, with some "normal" use, and by normal I mean regular texting, phonecalls, check facebook/twitter, refresh weather app, read mail and some news maybe you can't expect your battery to last 7 days like on dummy nokia.
Besides, you all forget that your biggest battery killer is the screen.
And another thing I noticed; when LED starts to glow green, your battery isn't fully charged. Check phone status. It becomes green after passing 90% I think, or so.
And the second thing I noticed is a HUGE differenc when charging the phone while it's on, for a hour and a half when the battery metter reaches 100% and when I turn it off and leave it charging over night.
The "night" option proved to be a lot better (battery lasts longer, doesn't fall so fast) + Every once in a while it is good to fully discharge the battery and then fully charge it.

Yeah, but that mobile phones have long since ceased to be just phones.
Switch off everything you can : wifi, brighteness, gps etc. Also you can make a profile "screen off " in setcpu and set it to 122mhz . it will save you a lot of battery! It drains just 1% after 5 hours ( but i didnt use my phone) . Hope it help.
Oh yeah and use the app called " fast reboot " it is so good is well and it speed up our lovely x8
When i used these things , my phone lasts in a week or more of.course i nearly didnt use my phone.

Seeing as I don't have enough posts to post over in the development forum, I thought I'd hijack this thread.
I installed this rom last week and at first, the batter was brilliant. It lasted for three days but now I have to charge it twice a day. I have bluetooth off, wifi off more often than not, brightness down very low.
The phone was 5hrs on battery and was down to 44%.
Cell Standby: 35%
Display: 20%
Phone Idle: 19%
Launcher Pro: 13%
Anyone have any ideas?
I also experienced the same problem ... especially with the overclocked conditions

Disable low battery warning and dimming

Anybody know how to disable the low battery restrictions? I like to get every last drop out of my battery before swapping it out. Currently rooted.
You do know that letting Li-Ion batteries fall below about 15-20% on a regular basis will significantly reduce their lifespan and ability to hold a full charge.

I'm desperately trying to find the code to stop these. The auto screen dimming and low battery warnings drive me crazy (the screen dimming in particular. It makes it SO dim it effectively makes the phone in the last five percent completely useless.) If I find a way to disable it in the system, I'll let you know. Till then, I use an app called adjbrightness to force the screen back up to useable brightness when it dims at low battery. (And before any of you who misunderstand what we're talking about responds, the screen dimming that occurs at the last five percent is not the "power saving" feature turning on. We've obviously completely disabled that in the settings. It dims anyway.)

I did not know this. I thought it was better to fully discharge before charging again?
I used this app, works great for me:

^That Root Dim app kicks ass, great app and a fair solutions. Bummer we have to work around but hey it works. I have a zerolemon and 5% is good for quite a long time, that dimmer made the phone useless in direct sunlight. screwed me over a few times..
thanks for the tip

20%, 5%, 1%, it really doesn't matter.
Your phone screams "0%" and shuts itself down when the battery hits about 3V. The battery protection circuit only kicks in at 2.5V. When your phone switches itself off you can safely leave the battery "empty" for at least a year or two before it self-discharges beyond repair.
All those "keep your battery above x %" superstitions are in the same boat as the long debunked "deleting batterystats.bin calibrates your battery" myth.
well this conversation has been highly entertaining and shows the deep divide between "leave your battery to run out" or "don't let your battery completely run out" either way how one manages their battery is their business ?
About the warning sound on older devices:
1) rooted android
2) replace system/media/audio/ui/LowBattery.ogg with a still ogg file.
I hope it will help

Disable auto low brightness on low battery

When my battery reaches 5% the screen dims (probably to the lowest brightness possible) so much that when outside the phone is not usable because I can't see anything and the brightness slider from the notification bar disappears. Is there a way to disable this? btw power saving is turned off.
Also does anybody knows if the phone slows down cpu/gpu when on low battery because I've been playing some games on low battery and I think they were a bit "laggy" but power saving was turned off.

I hate this feature as well, but it's on all phones that run android
It's built into the system
At 5% power, brightness goes to minimum
It's good feature, but when you have extended battery, it's really annoying with still a lot of power left. Screen becomes pretty dark.
And the fact that power of extended battery does not show correctly, it's 5% us not even like 10, but could actually be like 20, makes it even a bigger problem

Any ideas how to fix this issue ?
There's no actual way to override low power at 5%
It's built-in android.
If you really need backlight, get app in market, called adjbrightness, that's one word.
It can override brightness to any percentage you details yourself, it actually guess from 0-255, but it won't Activate auto brightness, since that blocked by android due to low power.
So just use that apply if you really need more light on screen till next charge cycle.

5% low battery no brightness adjustment
This is absolutely bs! I really can't stand samsung for doing this the only thing that I would say that puts samsung a downfall. I tried to do the same thing and rooted or not makes no difference. My guess is that it must be custom rom med or at least hack the binary and system to customize. Example remove enabled 5% lowest brightness from the system and identifying what the name of the file of system thats corsing the problem.
worked for me!

op2 owners: any regrets?

If coming from op1 or any other flagship device?
SO far, none. The OPO was the best phone I ever owned. I just got the OPT and after 24 hours it has amazed me. Some glitches here and there but nothing a software OTA cannot fix.
None. Certainly not with all the development going on here already. I'll enjoy the heck out of my phone.
My gripes since I had to buy on swappa.com, as I ordered on 9/1 and still don't have the actual phone.
1) Exchange only through Gmail. Poor implementation.
2) Can't see battery as percentage. Prefer time in middle on top.
3) slider notification should be reversed
4) no stock Gallery app (only accessible through photo app)
The phone is beautiful but let's be honest here, it is a buggy mess!

Well to be honest, point 1 & 2 are the same for stock Android. What do you mean with 3 exactly?
And actually, you can change the battery as percentage. Head to Settings > Battery and tap the battery icon next to the menu icon. It gives you inter alia an option to show percentage.
#3 would be the physical notifications slider on the left.

My stock messaging app doesn't consolidate my conversations properly. It creates to separate threads for one conversation, it shows one thread for what I text and a separate thread for my friend's responses??? Does anyone know how to fix this so the "back and forth" is in one thread?
Currently the OPT has a big failure that may force me to sell it. My contacts are only synced with 'mobile' to my car radio. So I am forced to choose of 6 'mobile' numbers from a list of only ONE mobile number of my wife. Not really a big bug but a total fail for me because I daily call my wife from the car while driving home. This is the one feature that really has to work but it does not.
With the ONE all works as you could expect. The Parrot Asterroid syncs without a fail and offers me the numbers correctly tagged with 'mobile', 'work', 'home' and so on. The TWO fails on this. So not really my phone atm.
no regrets. just little bugs that need to be addressed. fingerprint scanner works perfect for me also

For e, battery is a big disappointment so far. I hope with custom ROMs and kernels battery life should improve. Other than that, pretty much satisfied. However, does not feel like much of an upgrade over the one.
Battery is a big one for me as well, but I know future releases will solve that. The other thing would be heat. In 10mins of having the screen on, it jumps from ~26 degrees (where it idles) to ~40 degrees.
I'm surprised about the battery complaints. It's been really good for me. I can easily get 5-6 hours sot. Today I'm at 1hr 18mins sot with 78% battery left and exactly 14 hours since I unplugged it from the charger. Maybe I'm just lucky

Do you use ambient display?

So guys, was wondering if you use ambient display and if you do have you done tests for the difference in battery life?
I use it, the amount of battery that it uses is negligible.
Never works for me. Always turns on in the dark when laid on table idle. Never bothered to look into fixing because it's not a necessity for me.
Don't use or require for my usage...
I have it switched on, but it really doesn't matter, once I pick the phone up, I switch it on.
It drains a lot
Does it? How much?

I use it. Battery drain is very low. Anyway I wish it was more accurate. The screen turn on every time I put it on the table and sometimes when I take it, it should be the opposed.
I feel with native notification light, ambient display is kinda redundant.

I would if it worked properly. It's just so inconsistent. Sometimes I pick it up and nothing. Other times it works. Just very inconsistent.

100% agree. It would be a great feature, if it actually worked as intended. But since it's so inconsistent it's more of just an annoying gimmick. I turn Ambient Display off first thing whenever I flash a new ROM.
It's a shame to see that Ambient Display isn't working for some people, it works perfectly for me, every time. I receive a notification, it triggers. I pick my phone up into an upright position, it triggers.
