I recently purchased a used RAZR M for my wife. She enjoyed borrowing my work phone, so I figured she'd like this. Except I can't get the damn thing to switch to an LTE band. I've swapped sim cards and thrown mine in, same thing. No 4G. I've compared it to my work phone and the settings *look* to be correct. In the same room, my work phone gets LTE, so I know it's not a signal strength issue where I am.
I don't know the history of the phone itself. Would this be the result of it being switched to GSM use? Is this a radio problem? Is this a firmware problem? Is this a PEBKAC issue?
Keep in mind, this is on stock. I'm not too keen on being stuck on stock, I don't have a lot of choices with it being locked and on KitKat right now.
I'd appreciate any help/insight that y'all can offer.
Still looking for some insight. For what it's worth, the phone is being used on VZW now, it just can't / won't get LTE.
Check with your provider that you are using the correct APN for LTE. I know my provider has a specific APN for LTE and another that will only connect using 3G. It took multiple calls to their broadband tech support before someone pointed me to the correct APN config.
Problem has been resolved. See my final post in this thread.
Long time lurker. First time poster.
I am having problems getting 3G data on my new phone.
Last week I activated a new Moto X Pure Edition on the Sprint network via MVNO Ting. The phone appeared to activate just fine. Voice, text, LTE, Wi-Fi, and 1x data are all working without any obvious issues. Phone is pure stock.
3G data is not working. If I set Preferred Network Type to "LTE (recommended)", mobile data works on LTE but if I travel to an area that has not yet been upgraded to LTE, it will not drop back to 3G. Further, if I choose 3G as the Preferred Network Type regardless of whether the phone is connected to an LTE tower or a non-LTE tower, I get no data connection. Same for Global - no 3G connection.
If I choose "1x" as the Preferred Network Type (whether in an LTE area or not) then the phone will establish a data connection. The phone reports this connection as 3G in the status bar but the speed is so unusable that I doubt it can be a 3G connection.
I've done a carrier wipe, updated the device config (profile) and updated the PRL, all several times. Nothing changed. I've also done a factory reset which also did not help. I did not have any issues with my Nexus 5 which the MXPE replaced. I have since reactivated the Nexus 5 with a new number while troubleshooting this problem and it reactivated just fine. No issues at all.
Questions:
1) SignalCheck Pro reports that mobile data is "unregistered" when trying to get 3G data. Is registration of 3G data tied to the SIM card or to the MEID of the phone? Trying to determine if the registration problem lies with the SIM, the phone, or the network.
2) Why would I be able to get a 1x data connection but not 3G?
3) Ting is suggesting network problems may be playing a part but I'm not sure as the problem has persisted through several cities around west Texas and eastern New Mexico and throughout Lubbock TX which has many cell towers. Is there any way this could be a network issue?
4) Is the SIM for the MXPE compatible with my old Nexus 5? I'm wondering if swapping the SIM into my N5 will help to diagnose the problem.
5) Is anyone else with a MXPE having issues with 3G data?
This one is puzzling and I need some help from the gurus. Thanks much.

Bump.
Swapped SIMS with one sent by Ting to verify the problem wasn't with the SIM. Still no 3G.

Yes..i am having the same issue..with vodafone in india
Update. After two Moto X PE phones, numerous factory resets, much research and testing, there is now a work around to this problem. The problem does not appear to impact any phones on the big 4 networks. It only impacts phones on a Sprint MVNO.
There are now known eHRPD issues with Sprint and their MVNOs. The work around solution is to disable eHRPD. Sprint is working on changes to eHRPD that may resolve the issue permanently. Thanks to Ting for their persistence in helping get to the bottom of this problem.
DC
Final update. Earlier this month Sprint released some changes to the way eHRPD handoffs are handled and that resolved my issue. My Moto X PE now works as it should with no workarounds necessary to get 3G data.

There was no update pushed to the phone and no changes to the phone. The fix was on the network side.

So why not work 3g? Is the problem in cell operator?
^^Sprint had some issues with 3g (ehrpd) on mvno's. It would work if forced to evdo, but not ehrpd. Sprint made some changes to their network so this now works correctly. It was a network side issue.
Edit: Problem has been resolved. See thread linked below in this first post.
Original Post:
Please confirm whether or not 3G data works on your MXPE and report which carrier you are using. If an MVNO, please
report the network affiliation.
I am using Ting on Sprint network and my 3G data does not work.
I described the problem In this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/help/3g-data-t3233752
I'm working with Ting and Motorola to troubleshoot the problem. I am aware of 3 phones counting mine that do not get 3G data. Trying to ascertain whether this is a fairly isolated problem, if all MXPE phones have the issue, if this is a Sprint issue, or if it is a Ting or other MVNO issue on Sprint.
To summarize: Voice, text, LTE and 1X data all work. 3G data does not work although twice I was able to get it to work for less than 1 minute. It makes no difference if I am in an LTE area or not. SignalCheck Pro mostly reports the 3G data connection as "unregistered" although sometimes it reports it as "inactive". A SIM swap from a Sprint SIM to a Ting SIM made no difference (exact same part number). Various factory resets and carrier wipes also made no difference.
Another symptom is that my phone will not activate unless I have a Wi-Fi connection. Apparently the 3G data connection is needed to properly activate the phone.
Thanks much,
DC
Yes, on Verizon
I'm on Sprint, and when I'm in a low signal area (home), my 3G cycles on and off constantly. I came from a 2013 Moto X and did NOT have this issue. If Marshmallow update doesn't fix it, I will likely sell it and go Nexus 5x.
yes works on Verizon
Sent from my Moto X Pure Edition
Al three, LTE, 3G and 2G work on AT&T.
Looks like I am not alone here.
Mine is Moto X Pure Edition 32GB from Amazon.
I am in Singapore using Starhub.
I have LTE/4G or 3G, but it is like on and off.
Especially when I am on the train and the train goes underground, mostly i am not connected to internet.
It may show LTE or H, when I load FB, it will show me loading icon. That's it.
Hopefully this is a software bug.
It really pissed me off since my old phone Xperia Z Ultra has no issue at all in that area.
Anyone find anyway to fix it?
Thanks.
Thanks for the help. I also posted this request on a couple of other forums and even though the response was limited, there does not appear to be an issue with Sprint which leaves my phone or Ting as the problem.
DC
It works fine for me I'm on T-Mobile. Have you tried going into the settings and searching for cellular network? Because I had a strange issue where my LTE wasn't coming on. I'll post a screen shot of what I'm talking about.
This is in the settings where it says more.
As soon as I push cellular network it starts to scan then a list of providers pop up then I select my provider.

Turning off LTE in mobile network setting. That solve my problem for me. Personally I like to control network mobile manually. My old phone used to be completely manual means I can force my old phone to connect U.S. Cellular(3G) or Verizon(3G) while im in the 1x area.

Yes, I'm very familiar with that menu but it must be different for CDMA carriers. I get a new menu after choosing cellular network and one of the options (Preferred Network Type) is where I can choose LTE, 3G, 1X or Global. Makes no difference which I choose, 3G still doesn't work.
I've returned the phone to Motorola for a replacement.

Just turned off 4g to see if 3g works since I always get 4g where I live. It works fine on Verizon.
I live un chile where the internet its not so good, but with aws i have a great experience

Hi DC, I have the exact same problem as you. Wondering if getting a new phone from Motorola fix your 3g issue?
Thought I would test this since I'm on Sprint. Forcing 3g seems to work fine, downloading speedtest on 3g right now.
I am on MM and did not test on LP.

I haven't received the new phone yet. Motorola took a bit longer than originally thought. The new phone is supposed to be here early next week. I'll report back after I get it activated and tested.

The new phone did not fix the issue. Still no 3G data. What carrier are you with? So far, other than a couple of overseas users, the only people I've found with the problem were customers of a Sprint MVNO.
Since I sent the first MXPE back, I've acquired an Airave because the Sprint signals at my house are a bit weak. Strange thing is that I do get 3G data when connected to the Airave but nowhere else.

3G on Moto X Pure Edition.
Yes it works in some area's on T-Mobile, Does not work sometimes. Wish the range was better.
Every time if by some reason I loose signal (using and elevator, going in an underground parking, etc) it takes a very long time to get it back. Sometimes several minutes which is really annoying. Most times it set on E, then I have to go to airplane mode of other tricks in order to get it to LTE or H+. I've already change Sim card. Any ideas?
Enviado desde mi SM-T810 mediante Tapatalk
It's a bug, till google fixes it, use the airplane mode switch.
Also have the same problem on Verizon in the US.
Yep I just always toggle Airplane Mode in this situation.
Does the same for Sprint.
I don't lose signal. I do somehow switch to 3g from LTE but from what I've read that's a mmb29q mm bug. Never taken me several minutes to do anything on my device. Only thing I do notice is sometimes I get on 3g and I can get back LTE if i update my prl (I'm on Sprint) and reboot. This is a mm bug not carrier spacific from all I've read.

This has happened since eclair, if not earlier, and seems to be inconsistent over networks and devices. I've found it happen most often in places with overlapping cell towers with poor signal quality.
However, if you enable developer settings there are toggles for aggressive handover and maintaining mobile data with WiFi that may help to alleviate your issue.
Ok, so I switched to Cricket a while back from Verizon. I didn't notice the data drops on Verizon. But every aosp rom I've run has had some jank to some extent. Cm13 gives me the best connectivity, period, as far as wifi and data, speeds, etc. My favorite rom is screwd. It's the worst for me with lte and wifi drops. My phone won't stay on either one for an extended period of time and doesn't handoff to lte very well. What I've noticed, after reboot, is that aosp roms aren't selecting your APN and you have to manually hit that. Then sometimes, for me anyways, I have switch to 2g (the switch where the lte preferred is) then switch back to lte preferred. And that switch brings back lte faster than anything for me. Cm 13 is flawless though. It works like it should.

I'm going to try this. I'm presently running with sytsemless root. Is it possible to load this without having to completely wipe the phone?
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/T5Awh6VqsG4;context-place=forum/nexus People need to sign this , get some attention on this
I've been back and forth with Samsung over this. My new S8 (the unlocked USA version, SM-G950U1) has a poor signal in some office buildings, frequently losing signal entirely. Other phones at the same time and place have a strong signal with 4G LTE service. We've tried reflashing the software, changing the sim card, and booting it in safe mode. The same sim card in a different phone gets a signal. I've run Open Signal on multiple phones at the same time to compare results and to show to service reps so they can see what's happening, though that gets me no closer to understanding the source of this problem.
In most places, this S8 works fine and has a great signal. Any thoughts about what could be causing it? Has anyone else experienced this?
Due to summer travel, I didn't catch the problem until after my 14-day return period. Samsung claims I need to mail them the defective one "for repair" and plan to be without my phone for 9-11 days, which seems absolutely crazy to me. (I made a big fuss and they offered to expedite it, but that's still 5 days without my phone.) Looking for last-ditch suggestions... anyone? Thank you!
Edit - more technical details including network screenshots posted here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/help/galaxy-s8-unlocked-sm-g950u-maintaining-t3680887
Had the same issue. Had to have to repaired.
They changed everything except the screen and frame.
The issue occured after a software update. After repairs the issue returned after the Orea update... but isnt as bad as before. I seem to have lost Band 5.. 850Mhz
My phone also *just* updated to Oreo, and I think the problem may be back in a milder form. I haven't had a chance to really test or debug it, yet.
My best theory has been that the phone was prioritizing non-LTE signals over a weak LTE signal. How I fixed it the first time: enter the BAND service mode via the native dialer by dialing *#2263# (2263 spells BAND). Clear all bands, then select all LTE bands (ONLY LTE) and apply the changes. This forces the phone to use only LTE signals, no matter their strength. It's worth noting that you may need to alter this when traveling through areas without LTE service, by re-entering the menu and selecting all bands and applying the changes.
Good luck! Please let me know if you figure anything out with your phone after its oreo update!
It is because you will not be on the network band that is stronger
Since flashing my phone back to Nougat I still cannot enable band 20 which I need for better signal. So I’m stuck with poor signal

Are you using the unlocked USA version, SM-G950U1 ? If you load the *#2263# service menu, you can't enable/disable LTE band 20?
If that's the case, I'm not sure why that's happening! When you flashed back to Nougat, did that include a flash back to the baseband you were previously on?
I'm using the g950F from UK unlocked to all networks
Almost all networks rely very heavily on Band 20 in my town to provide good coverage- so with our It I have a major problem
Facing same issue - loss of lte signal - s8+ switching to weaker lte band
Just got the S8+ and updated it to the latest OREO. After detailed diagnosis using service codes, the issue is that the phone is definitely prioritize a weaker LTE BAND Signal during radio activity with the network tower.
Getting full signals on with the same SIM card on other phones.
The new service mode is also not operable or I don't know the key yet. Using *#0011# only shows the SERVICE MODE (Stack 1 & Stack 2), but is not navigable using the Q0 and Q 0000 keys.
Anyone found a solution to this problem or do we have to wait for an update to fix this?
Enter the BAND service mode menu via the native dialer by dialing *#2263#
(2263 spells BAND)
If this doesn't work, what android software build are you running? (It still works for me, on my S8, running oreo G950U1UES5CRL2 )
Solved - jan security patch update
Hi, Just got the update for the JAN SECURITY PATCH UPDATE.
Its working fine now. They fixed the bug. So relieved, finally able to use the handset properly now.
Cheers!
