I went to the Verizon store like many and did a side by side picture of my Nexus 6 next to the pixel 2XL. The phone was great but I have to say I thought the colors on my Nexus 6 looked better. I felt like the colors on my Nexus 6 had more contrast and felt more vibrant. Hmmm. Still not cancelling my pre-order though LOL. I'm mostly excited for the camera upgrade.
I also took a picture of a wall with a lot of colors to compare the 2 phones. Nexus 6 image first, then 2XL. These two pictures were quite comparable in quality I felt. I think where the Pixel 2 shines is the portrait mode and being fast.
When comparing the screens, consider this (from here):
If you're coming from an iPhone, you're not going to have a problem with the display at all. You're going to love it. The people that report that the display is "washed out" come from a display that over-saturates the display, which is pretty much every other OEM out there that uses OLED displays, with Samsung being the main "offender". Google, like Apple, are targeting color accuracy on the Pixel 2. The colors on the Pixel adhere to sRGB and support wide color if an app calls for it. The Pixel 2 is definitely pushing a more serious tone with their decision of targeting sRGB,

The camera won't be even close between the two for most photos. I think the Verizon store example offers lighting and subject that is about as easy as it gets for a camera to capture, and even then the photo from the nexus 6 looks purple. Wait until you take photos outside on a sunny day, or an overcast day, or in low light, or with fine details or skin tones.

I feel like it looks very close in size visually, but once you hold the pixel 2xl, even with the verizon security sensor on the back, you can tell its going to be easier to thumb tap with 1 hand. I'll miss the added screen size on the n6, but the camera will more than make up for it for me personally.

Both phones have 6 inch displays. The Aspect ratio has changed from 16:9 to 18:9 now, which should make the screen taller and narrower on the Pixel 2 XL than the Nexus 6 so one handed operation reaching the other side of the screen should be easier, but reaching the top should be slightly harder.....
Can you post any additional photos. I would buy pixel if there is very noticeable difference in quality, I don't mind if HDR is much slower on N6 and yes I don't care about front camera. I have to say N6 with HDR makes very good photos so to buy pixel I need to be sure is worth it.
All Nexus 6
I'm still quite impressed about the Nexus 6 camera, I know we know how the pics are, but when I sent some of those to my friends, they are also impressed, even owning 2017 phones.
I also would like more comparisons with the Pixel 2 if anyone with both can provide!

I agree the Nexus 6 is capable of taking great pictures.
The problem is it's much slower to focus, to take, and process HDR+ pictures compared to the Pixel/Pixel 2. In the day time, wouldn't see much until pixel peep at full res. In night time, the Pixel/Pixel 2 will blow away the Nexus 6. The Pixel/Pixel 2 handle moving objects much better too. The Pixel/Pixel 2 cameras are just reliably great in every situation.

100% true, just because of slower HDR+ and night poor quality photos is difficult to drop 600£ for new pixel 2. Pixel 2 XL is 700 adding terrible LG quality...google will have to drop price significantly

Exactly why I chose to pick up a brand new, original Pixel for 400.
With the Pixel/Pixel 2 the camera experience is such a great experience; even if not into photography you'll find yourself taking more pictures, more often.

I completely agree on the screen size. I HATE this new aspect ratio and can only pray that it's a fad. I need a 7-8" tablet with a good camera, current processor and a cellular radio.
I had pixel 2 xl, absolutely hated it. Screen is bluish at a tiny angle, rounded corners, dim screen, expensive as he'll, crappy aspect ratio, and when you tap with your finger in the middle section of the screen - phone makes hollow sound. Wait till pixels are $200, perhaps only then pixel hardware disaster will be worth it. Got Nexus 6, looking forward to it. Optical image stabilization with decent software is what makes such terrific pictures possible.. First gen pixels do not have OIS...

The original Pixel doesn't need OIS. It has a big sensor and pixels. Better HDR+ algorithm too.
Nexus 6- 5.867 mm, 1.12 μm
OG Pixel- 7.81 mm, 1.55 μm
It's able to pull in more light without having to go to super low shutter speeds. OIS can't help the Nexus 6 in this battle. The sensor isn't nearly as good. Yea it's possible to take decent shots in low light with the Nexus 6 but it'll require manual mode- meaning more effort.
If pixels do not need OIS, why was it added on second gen of pixels? OnePlus 5t also has large sensor, but its pictures are crap anytime the hand shakes tiny bit.
I recently upgraded my trusty Nexus 6 to a Pixel 2 xl and can honestly say, it was the right choice. It's easier to hold in one hand and so far, not having any of the issues I've read about. The bluish tint is not as bad as I thought it would be but is still there. It's the first google phone that I've bought right after it came out. Great phone!

With the recent $100 off unlocked moto x promo, I was ready to ditch my HTC One. I've been using One since near first day of release and tried all kinds of ROMs including GoogleExperience edition. I ended up settling on HTCs developer edition ROM with OTA updates. I recently got a warranty replacement and this was a cherry picked replacement device from 12 devices in front of me. 10 had flaws such as gaps and creeks for both black and silver ones. Anyways my One is in near perfect condition so I was going to sell it and get the Moto X.
I ordered my 32GB unlocked for $350 so it was a good deal. First thing I noticed was how blurry the text was on the edges. This matters a lot for web surfing and being able to see a lot more without zooming in is really nice. I hold my phone about 16 inches away from my eyes.
When I opened google maps it became relevant that this is a lower resolution screen, but this may be a software problem, I don't know. I'm missing all the details. Compared to my One, it's like going back 5 years to Nexus S times.
Whoever says anything over 300dpi is undetectable is lieing or haven't tried comparing them or simply don't need that high resolution screen. I suspect those people who dont nees high res scrren will use 768p screen on a 15" laptop too.
720p on phone screen would be okay if you only play games and watch movies on it.
Then I tried the camera and pictures in my room this morning after a series of moto x software updates, and had so much graininess it's like it came from a toy cam. This a major let down to me because I use the camera a lot and I don't facebook/instagram.
Moto assist is pretty awesome and so is Active Display and always ready voice commands. Phone itself is pretty snappy even though it has a mid range cpu. Build quality is not top notch though better than HTC One.
I'm returning mine and will stick with HTC One until a higher res Moto X or similar comes out.
Cool?

I think you're insane. With the phone a foot and a half away from my face text is far from blurry and I have just about the keenest vision around.
Coming from a GS4 I couldn't tell that much of a difference in screen resolution. Is there a difference? Sure, but not enough for me to care about. I really don't understand the hate on the camera. Low light isn't the best but it wasn't that great on the gs4 either. And the GS4 is regarded as having one of the best cameras for a smartphone. The feel, smoothness and features on the moto x trumps all the jank HTC or Samsung offer imo.
I actually went from a Nexus 5 to a Moto X and I have no regrets. I don't notice the screen difference that much other than the comparisons between IPS and AMOLED display. As for the screen size, I prefer the Moto X because I can hold the phone easily in one hand compared to the Nexus 5 which felt like a flatbread. The Moto X has by far the best ergonomics for a phone to date. The camera for me versus the Nexus 5 is more of a "whatever." Both cameras have their hit and misses but that's coming from someone who uses full frame cameras. I'm not really pixel peeping the quality of the images from the Moto X nor did I with the Nexus 5.
You must remember that the Moto X wasn't made to be a phone for people who cares about specs. It was made for the common, average, user in mind. The Moto X impresses from it's features rather than it's spec sheet. Similar to Apple's iPhone.
Just my 2 cents.
The HTC One's camera is obviously going to be better, especially in low light/indoor situations, because of the ultra pixel technology.
Screen Resolution is always going to be debatable. Some people notice it, some people don't. I'd say the bigger cause of difference between the screens is that one is AMOLED (X) and one is LCD (One). In general, LCD screens are crisper but color reproduction isn't always as good, whereas AMOLED screens have much better color saturation but might appear less crisp in comparison.
Well have fun on the HTC One forums and let us enjoy our crappy screen. Ive put the same image and webpage next to each other on a galaxy s4 and moto x. Studies show Motorola pulled of a 30% more power efficient screen. At 6 oclock at night when Im still using my phone my girlfriends is dead in her purse
I disagree. I came from an s4 and other the moto x screen. Being non pentile makes a big difference to my eyes. The x looks sharper to me

Yeah, pentile AMOLED is far worse than non-pentile AMOLED.
I compared both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Moto X's screens and by far, the Moto X was much sharper.
If we can learn anything from this thread, I think it's clear that some people see the difference in the screen and some don't. It's silly to say "no, no difference, everyone that thinks there is is crazy" or "yes, of course there is a perceptible difference and if you can't see it, you're fools."
For me personally, I see the difference in text very readily. I moved from an S4 to the Moto X, and could immediately see the degradation in text quality. Now, do I care? No, because, while I can see the difference between the two, both resolutions are good enough for me.
As for the camera, I've been taking nothing but amazing shots, and I'm very happy. That said, I leave HDR on at all times.
Nope

What a troll....
For me the Moto X has been a welcome change from my S3. At the price it's truly realistic to go off-contract and save some money and still have a GREAT phone. Consistently 5 hours of screen on time and pretty much only recharging every other day compared with around 2 hours and less than a day on the S3. Really like the size and ergonomics; I think Motorola really hit the sweet spot here. Can still handle and use it with one hand and not feel visually cramped like that fruity phone. The near stock environment is also welcome. I can tell a slight difference in ~300dpi vs ~400dpi, but not huge and wouldn't trade that off for less battery life. When the fonts get that small, I'm switching to landscape orientation anyways. Camera wise it OK, but I don't look for much out of any mobile phone. It's for quick shots when I don't have something better with me (e.g. Sony RX100 with a sensor >7x larger). That said, I respect HTC for their camera approach trading off resolution for larger sensor photosites which end up being in the same range as something like the RX100. Build quality wise, the 3 Moto X's in our house were all perfect. Personally, I don't equate plastic with cheap. I equate quality plastic with a phone designed to take some drops and not dent or crack. A Rolex like feel (i.e. the fruity phone) makes for wonderful marketing, and sort of makes more sense if you're strapping it to your wrist (like a watch) and view it as something for the long haul that you're not replacing when your next 2 year subsidy comes up. Also appreciate that the Moto X has some level of repairability compared with the HTC One. Not as simple to replace a battery as the Samsung's, but still doable (ifixit teardowns).
At 16 inches away text would need to be really small for me to notice blurryness. to the point where i wouldn't be able to read it anyway.
I can see the differences in displays, but it's more than just resolutions (as already mentioned) pentiles have huge drawbacks.... but even in non pentile i think even the shape of the subpixels matter as well.
I think there's diminishing returns for anything much higher than 720p on a phone though (at least for non phablet phones)
It takes so much more power to light the pixes and GPU power to keep them running smoothly.

Well, the cameras are a bit different. The HTC One takes better pictures when it decides to get them in focus. I don't know why, but with my HTC One, it felt like I needed a freaking tripod to not have a blurry shot.
With my X, I get a sharp shot mostly every single time.
When you've got to take a quick picture, I don't give a crap if every 5th one comes out looking great and sharp, I just need one picture that comes out clear and workable.
I did love my One though, but without the touchless and active notifications, it was a goner.
Yes the camera needs to be better when compared to other high-end phones.
and yes the screen would look less crisp next to a 1080p screen.
But how can you argue when its almost half the price of other phones?
Motorola obviously made a conscious decision to make the device way more affordable.
You can't complain about that
I honestly cannot tell the difference between my 720p Moto X and my 1080p Droid DNA. The only difference I can tell between the two are the more saturated colors on the Moto X. Other than that, they're both crystal clear and I cannot make out any pixels.
As for the camera, it has been serviceable for me. Haven't had any issues at all.
Has anyone bought the 6P and then asked themselves "why on earth did I spend the money, the other one was equally as good as this one".
I'm torn because from a standpoint of specs I just don't see a bunch of difference and the 6 is a great phone. SO that's the question, if anyone regrets it other than the fact it's a new phone, i would love to hear your take. :silly:

Yes I have had this internal discussion. I had the OG LG G2 and it is perfect in every way for me at least. I do really like the larger screen but I will miss the G2.
The thing with specs are they are just that....specs... the lg g2 still feels fast and has no real lag and its old as F*******
Coming from the Nexus 6, I can say there was enough there to make me want the 6P. Sensor hub+ doze, battery, processor, finger print scanner, better display, not so wide frame, camera, it doesn't rock around on the table when you try to use it, 128GB, etc... I can say it is a solid upgrade in just about every way.
It's still brand spanking new, and I still haven't gotten over that kid in a candy store feel of getting a new device. Right now I would say I am extremely pleased and not regretting the purchase at all. Time will tell if I develop any complaints.
Edit: I would say the slightly smaller screen was the only thing I immediately noticed was different while using it, but it was not really a downgrade. 5.7 vs 5.9 inches isn't a huge change in real estate, but it still is a change. On the bright side, at least the 6P fits in my car's cupholder!
My only concern is the size. Coming from m8; this phone is way took big but I really like the specs of it. Trying to get used to the size.
Not one bit. I love this phone. Plus, mine seems to be bug or defect free. Yay!
Former Z3 owner.
I dont use my N6 for anything anymore..
This phone is sooooo much batter
Fingerprint scanner
Not as wide
Awesome dual front speakers
Better camera
Way better gaming performance
Better screen
0 regrets. Love doze, the screen, the speakers, the freedom to do whatever I like with the software. I am a bit hesitant about the camera but hopefully they push some software improvements later.
Slightly disappointred with my display. Whites are dirty / yellowish when looking straight at it. Look much better when viewing from an angle. Suffering a bit of color changing when i move the handset about.
Last phones was a Nexus 5, and a couple of months with a cheapy UMI Iron. Both of which had better whites. Hoping this is fixable.

I know that you shouldn't have to for the price point of this phone, but there is already a kernel to adjust the screen temps and there will undoubtedly be more. But I had an S4 prior to the M8 and I truly appreciate the saturated darks on AMOLEDs. After a week or so, I never even notice the slight hues associated with AMOLED screens but I think some are just more sensitive toniticing the the contrast than others. Hopefully in the next 5 years an AMOLED TV will become a more affordable option

That's how I feel. My first Android phone was the S3 which had an AMOLED screen them I had a Note 3. I moved in to a LCD on my G3 and while i liked the phone the screen at times was horrible in comparison. I've had some other LCD phones and tablets but anything with an AMOLED will win my money in the end. It's sad to see Motorola stray from them because now we are left with Samsung phones, and Nexii for now (for the most part). I'm sure with the recent rumors of apple considering an AMOLED will spark further demand for them which is a good thing. I really enjoy how nice AMOLED/OLED screens look. Let's not forget the battery life that usually follows which is generally better.

I couldn't agree more with you man. That was a really odd move on Moto's part IMO because of their way of delivering notifications...really stupid to move away from the low battery draw of AMOLEDs regarding active notifications. Though, I think Moto is a sinking ship in general these days, but that a-whole-nother discussion. I hope Apple does push for AMOLED so that it becomes more coveted feature, but it takes them a while to get on board with big changes.
Love the phone coming from a Verizon note 3. Two comments. One, the battery life isn't that great compared to the note. Samsung actually did a great job there imo. But I can still get two days out of the phone with light to moderate usage so all good. Two, for whatever reason apps take a long time to install after the download is finished. Everything else is fast on the phone.
I know, I know. I'm going going against what everyone else says, but I'm not trolling... I actually prefer this screen. Is it perfect? No. But my wife has the Galaxy S8 and I really do prefer the Pixel 2 XL screen over the Sammy's.
It actually has a more even color compared to the Samsung's. The S8 has a reddish tint when looking straight on that is uneven. Some areas are more red than others. Tilting the phone makes it worse. The Pixel's screen is nearly perfect looking straight on. I like the more natural colors too. And I find the Pixel 2 XL screen to be more visible in certain outdoor lighting. I think the 2 XL screen is slightly sharper looking too. Again, it's not without it's flaws, but all and all, I think I like this screen better than the competition.
This is utter nonsense, Samsung display is significantly brighter. That is not even subjective but a fact (565 nits vs 460 nits).
Unless your girlfriend has a defective device everything you said is wrong.
I dig my pixel 2 xl and would never trade it for Samsung but this kind of Google *********** annoys me.
Edit: fixed nits
*MOD EDIT*
Let's watch the cursing. Thanks.
I agree that despite all the idiots *****ing about the color representation, my screen is nice. No overly blue tint shift or burn in. It looks good. I have installed Oreo colorizer but only because of withdrawal from a 6p sammified
If you actually read my post, you would have noticed I said it's brighter in certain outdoor conditions. Content seems more visible during overcast conditions on the Pixel 2 XL. I'm not talking about nits. There's more to visibility than nits. Screen reflectivity and other factors are important too.
This screen is better than the Samsung's. Colors are nicer. It's more visible outside and I don't have any of the so called issues that the few sky is falling people out there have been whining about.

It's more visible outside? I don't get how that's possible since the Samsung display is brighter. Are you talking about with sunglasses on?

I kind of agree. I use Automate and have a profile that automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen based on the lux value. I had to lower the multiplier because it was much brighter in different lighting conditions. I am also coming from an S8+. I really don't know why everyone is complaining about the screen. It's not that bad at all.
I don't have any complaints about blue tint, grain, black crush, burn-in, muted colors or anything like that. But what I really dislike is that there's an orange/brown tint to everything that at times makes stuff look vintage 70s. I'm going to see if the saturated mode in the new update will fix it, otherwise I'm going to have to install a custom kernel with color controls to try to get the colors right. The colors on this thing is definitely not properly calibrated.
It's not. I have both phones. I don't mind the more realistic colors of the Xl. I want to see what the update does.
I have both and the XL 2 has become my daily driver! Looking good so far!
The screen looks fine but it is, by no stretch of the imagination, better than the screen on the S8, S8+ or Note 8. Don't get me wrong, after having my 4 month stint with the S8 (which was great), I'm absolutely loving my LG G30 and would still take it over the S8, despite the screen. The screen on the V30 is nowhere near as crisp and clear as the screen on my S8 was. And to say it gets brighter than the S8 screen would just be a flat out lie.
I even took time to compare my V30 side by side with a 2 XL and another S8 in the Verizon store and the S8 screen puts both to shame in every regard. Side by side the V30 and 2 XL screens look identical, but that's to be expected considering LG made them both, seemingly around the same time.
Personally, I'm willing to give that screen up to get rid of Touchwiz and gain those beautiful sounding front facing speakers on the 2 XL (mine arrives Monday). But I cannot pretend that I'm getting a superior screen with either my V30 or 2 XL, because that simply is not true.
Anyone else jumping ship when the P4 drops?? Really like the P2, but totally disappointed in the lack of custom roms and dev support compared to the XL! Also looking forward to the hopefully upgraded chinless display!
Yeah I'm excited for the 4, I also have the small Pixel 2, ready for change! [emoji23]Let's see.

I'll likely upgrade to Pixel 4, but absolutely don't expect a chinless display. If it turns out to be completely symmetrical, I'll expect a notch and it'll be okay. Even better without a notch, but that 3 XL design is dreadful imo.
I'll probably upgrade. I'd like more resolution in the camera to zoom in with more detail
I hope they maintain the size of the Pixel 4 smaller or equal to Pixel 3. (Which is smaller than Pixel 2).
But I'd love them to skip the whole notch or camera hole thing on the screen.
I'm jumping to the 4xl the moment it is available.
I hope for a nearly chinstrapliss design but not really expecting it.. And I know it will likely have the cutout camera
No hole punch for me!
I won't buy anything with a double-width punch-hole camera, so if those leaks are accurate and describe the smaller 4 (the only one I'd be interested in) as well as the XL then that would be a deal-breaker for me.
The Huawei P30 Pro has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
They should have definitely gone with a 2k panel, as the display on this phone reminds me a lot of the S5 and S4 displays. Texts looks fuzzy, and the brighter the screen goes, the more you'll be able to notice the pixels, and you don't even need to look for them. Maybe my eyes got used to the sharper displays I had in the past few years, but even when compared to my last year's P20 P30, this doesn't look that good in terms of sharpness.
If you keep the phone really near your face for example when in bed or trying to read something, you will notice it.
You also noticed it when comparing some videos between this and a 2k screen. The images in this phone are very sharp, but in a bad way..
You will also notice the better battery life. It was the major negative in the specification and nearly stopped me buying the phone. But I checked out the display in the shop and I was happy with the OLED panel. Not blown away but I think the difference between this and some of the higher resolution phones is marginal. I cant see any pixels in text have changed the default size of text in the phones settings?
Wonder why be default Samsung set the Galaxy S10 to FHD+ the same as the P30?
No pixelation at all,and default settings for most of 2k phones is fhd+ resolution.
The 2k resolution is useful for VR content using cardboard or similar.
For normal eye,we can't notice any pixelation with FHD+ resolution. 2k resolution is selling point only for other phones or brand but not necessarily useful or noticable
They should give us the option to use 1440p or 1080p instead of just took it away while charging full flagship price.
You won't notice the difference at all unless comparing side by side.
Came from a pixel 2 xl and the downgrade in the screen is barely noticeable

Pixel 2 xl screen on white was already grainy.
You can see pixels on Black text on whites for sure sure sure. The display is so bad. Compare it with any 1080p display in market. That's the only down side of this phone and also the camera hype.
I've compared to quite a few devices. The whole pixel display hysteria was a non issue with later models.
But I have access to samsung s8 and s9 and the display is not that far behind them in terms of quality. Heck I'm straining at the text as I write this and I can't make out any pixels.
Either you have a dodgy unit or seeing things.
Also the camera is pretty damn good. Got some amazing shots that is just not possible from other devices

An update on this matter after owning the phone for almost two weeks now:
I don't know if it was the tweaks I did to the screen's scaling, or the font size, or my eyes were used to 2k displays, or maybe a combination of all what I mentioned above, but I don't notice the pixels on my phone anymore, and even when I grab my wife's S10+, I don't feel like I'm looking at a much crisper screen. The S10+ still looks like the better panel imo, it feels like it's a sticker that is sitting on top of the glass, but in terms of clarity, I honestly don't see the difference as much as I did the 1st few days after I got my P30 Pro.

Depends which pixel 2 xl they sent you, mine is pure white and been happy with it since release, and yes the text is awful on the p30 pro, should have been a 2k screen.

wow i'd love to see your p30 pro panels because mine is nice and crisp.
Nothing wrong with the text
Even had comments on how good the display is from other people

Lucky you, the one i sent back was worse clarity than my pixel 2 xl, do some research and apparently they're using 2 different panels, already can't trust a company that can't be arsed using the same **** trying to fulfill orders.
i use fhd+ resolution setting and not the smart choice(default). I m pretty satisfied with the res. FHD is enough for a screen 6-10 inches. Even in 55 4k tv's most people strungle to separate real 4k from FHD(Not me), so this is more psycological feeling than visual on phone screens. Of course side by side qhd looks crispier than fhd but not by far.
Having used many 1080p devices I found the display not seem as sharp as other 1080p devices, never mind 2k. Not sure if its because of the size or the panel. Maybe it would have been better if it was a samsung panel?
Mine is also nice and crisp, you have to change the resolution to 1080p+. Its not as sharp as the s10 but after a while not noticeable. The colours are good and outdoor visibility is great.
I cant honestly tell the difference! if it saves me battery, I am all for it!
Have used it alongside note 8 display, can't seem to find any difference. Works good for me.
Screen looks just as sharp and vibrant as my Note 9. Battery life is noticeably better than that phone though. I can't fault the decision to use a 1080p screen at all.
coming from a Note 9. I definitely see the difference. P30 Pro display is not as crisp. I agree with above that you can actually see the pixels without looking hard
