Can this still be rooted? How? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

As the title says, can this be saved from 10P update? If you watch the top, you will see 10P is schedule for update.
What I want is to improve V20 performance, audio and battery performance. On older phones like Notes and Galaxy, I used to root them and improve them on most area's.
Sadly the V20 is a pain as far I have read.
Thanks in advance.

What model v20 is that?

T Mobile

I think 10k is unrootable but if im correct you could downgrade on 10k to 10d to root.

10k is rootable with dirtycow, but you can downgrade to 10d as raven213 said, and then you can use fastboot flash recovery.
As for not taking the update, your safest bet is to backup your phone and then pull the battery and immediately get into download mode so you can flash a KDZ, because if your phone reboots, that update will be applied and there is no rooting 10p right now.
EDIT: actually, you could just root now. Once you have TWRP on, you may get stuck on a loop until you wipe part of the misc partition, but at least it won't apply.
EDIT2: Sorry, 10k isn't rootable, you will need to roll back to at least 10j.

Planning on swapping 918 V20 for another 918 V20 using Jump. Currently suffering a broken screen. What are the odds the replacement V20 in store is on a rootable firmware? Or do they even swap out in store?
And apologies for apparent thread hijack.

I just picked up a t-mobile v20 last week and it was manufactured in August with the 10p firmware. I think chances of finding an older firmware model would be hard. Here's hoping for a root method soon.

Yeah, not the news I was hoping for. I may have them pull a box and boot it up. If its an older firmware then I will grab it. Otherwise, I may just make the move to the V30. But not terribly excited about starting a new EIP.
What is the latest rootable firmware?
Appreciate the info.

10j is the last rootable, but 10k is ARB 0 so you can roll back. 10p and 10q are ARB 1 and not rootable.

<~~~ on 10q :crying:

Woohoo! Just got my new V20 and it's on 10K!

The one I purchased in store a month or so ago came with 10j. It even said so on the outside of the box on the printed label. If you're buying new, it's something you can easily check. I just had them leave it sealed up and waited to power up till I was ready to root it.

Can anyone point to a guide/thread for detailed instructions on rolling back the LG V20 918 running 10k... and then rooting?
Been searching for quite awhile and found many references, but no walkthrough guides.

Is there a way to go back to stock? I'm on 10p bootloader+modem/TWRP, don't care about root. Can I just flash the 10p/10q KDZ or TOT file?

@MidtownHD If you don't care about root, then yes, flash the 10p or 10q KDZ and you will be back 100% stock.

1. The v20 doesn't have 6.0 Firmware
2. If it did have it and you were on 7.0 Firmware then downgrading would actually brick your device.
Why? Because LG incorporated an "Anti_Rollback" counter. You can see it in the 'Hidden Menu'.
i.e. If MM was Anti-Rollback #1 and Nougat Anti-Rollback was #2 there would be no going back. You can only flash/upgrade/restore firmware/Roms with the same Anti-Rollback number. So if you take an OTA and it switches to 3 then any Roms or Backups or even Firmware Packages that are lesser than that you can No longer use.
Good Luck.

I just bought a v20 off eBay. It was already on h91810r version I just bumped it back to h91810p which is 2 versions back with no issue and got to h91810k and it rejected it so I guess that's that. No root or custom recovery for me. Lg played us dirty.

10k is the last version with ARB=0 (anti-rollback). Any firmware update that followed was ARB=1.
If you buy a V20 off of eBay, your best bet is to not buy it from an individual because they will probably have used it right up until the time of auction, meaning they will probably have installed the latest updates. Mobile phone resellers that sell them in lots are a better bet.
I got mine last week and it was on 10j. You bet I made sure it was not going to be connected to the Internet before I was done rooting.

For what it's worth. I think the anti rollback thing is mainly T-Mobiles fault since I believe the T-Mobile model is the only one that has anti rollback activated on it.
I tried getting it to h918k but it failed. And I did buy it from a seller not a everyday Joe. That's why I was pissed when I seen it was h91810r I was like WTF I'll brick it and send it back.

Unfortunately, it's still a luck of the draw. A mobile phone reseller might have gone ahead and put the latest updates on it, but that's not always the case. If an individual is selling their V20, they probably didn't keep it locked away for the last year before deciding now is a good time to sell it.
Anyway, you should keep a watch on this thread. There is hope, but it won't be instant gratification.

Yah I figured in the near future it would see full root and full working twrp. The bottom line is I like the damn phone, it works perfectly ( for a LG ) it's a big step up from the v10. But the power button if faulty you have to just about put your finger through the phone to get it to activate and that's a pain in the ass when your doing the combo to get into DL mode or fastboot.
Then the power button alone issue would be good enough reason to get a return or exchange.
Unfortunately the seller has about 20 of these devices mainly all t mobile but there all messed up or in terrible condition. I paid 130$ for this and it's mint except that button. He's got a 90$ parts phone that's unlocked but has a botched charger port and I bet it's sitting on h91810j or older firmware. There's root in sight.

LG H918 OTA 10P KDZ? Update:warning

HI. The LG H918 10P OTA Update.zip has started pushing out. I received it on my phone last night. Can somebody provide a link to the LG KDZ for this update? I want to get on making a stock flashable zip ASAP.
Warning Note: this new update is anti rollback V1 so if you have root DO NOT take the update or you will lose root!
Thanks in advance!
UPDATE: I sniffed the following url from LG Bridge but it's not working for me yet
pkg03.lime.gdms.lge.com/dn/downloader.dev?fileKey=FW37PO1B72F0A0E6DC9FH8E/H91810p_00_0717.kdz&e=1502296493&h=b256c84adce3692fb374ef9b586bffdc
is H9810p and say AntiRollback

I wonder if 10N was about to be rolled out then was aborted in favor of 10P. Strange since the Android version itself on both remain on the 7.0 branch. Hopefully the full fledge 10P build will emerge so devs can incorporate any fixes and what not into ROMs.
Edit: Looking at LG's kernel source distro looks like we also missed out on 10O as well as that's up right now. No kernel source as of now for 10P.

You must be new to LG. They stay on the same point release as the phone was released with with all updates. Okay only when they update to the next version of Android does the version number change.

Until you posted this I swore at least the G6 and some of their recent lower tier phones were on 7.1.1 but alas they too are on 7.0 as well. So yeah the next major push LG will do is probably to whatever Android O will be (which is 8.0 the last I heard).

Is it possible to flash a rooted 10p kdz? Is there one?
I unlocked the bootloader with 10p and tried root with easyrecowvery and dirtycow. ER will not install twrp successfully and DC hangs at the logcat command.

If your bootloader is unlocked can you try this:
https://www.howtogeek.com/240047/how-to-flash-twrp-recovery-on-your-android-phone/
Earlier H918 bootloaders (10d etc) did not have the FLASH command built in if I remember correctly. Maybe LG threw us a bone and included it in this bootloader.
Let me know. If would be great news.

If you do what my previous post says make sure as soon as you get into twrp that you FORMAT data and system (you will lose all data but it will unencrypt the rom) and flash the 10p stock rom, modem, and bootloader. If you don't, you may get a boot loop. You might get one anyway, this is risky. But you already unlocked your bootloader so it's obvious you are down for a little risk lol
God's speed sir. This could be huge

TWRP Restore Question

My V20 currently is the Us996 version with 10h. 10H seems to be unrootable at the moment, but before I flashed 10H (By mistake) I made 3 twrp backups on my external SD card. Is there any way to possibly restore my phone using the backups I have saved on my SD card even though I don't have root or TWRP installed?
You need TWRP to restore a backup. You may be able to downgrade to an earlier version if there is a kdz available. OK, I found one.
Here is a link to the 10f firmware (kdz):
https://lg-firmwares.com/download-file/?fileId=5252
You might want to search and see if anyone has tried downgrading to this first. If it's possible, then you can add TWRP and root.
As an a side, I'm on h918 10j. 10k is not rootable and 10p is anti rollback. The upgrades are minimal and no one can point to any significant advantage. I have a custom ROM with lots of nice tweaks and I won't be installing any more upgrades. In fact, I expect there will be fewer and fewer upgrades coming as the phone gets older. No problem. Too many people want to jump on the next upgrade as if if will make the phone suddenly work differently. It won't.
There will be new customizations coming that will only work on a rooted phone (like second screen). Those that upgrade and are stuck with stock may not be able to take advantage.
So I hope you can use this to downgrade to 10f. Just research it first.
Cheers.

It's still a great phone even stock. You never know if a dev who waited until the price of the phone came down doesn't jump on board and find a fix.
Enjoy the phone as it is. And there lots of tweaks you can do with stock (second screen tweaks are already here).
By the way, the camera in manual mode, is awesome. Play around with different settings and you will get far better pics than auto mode.
Select AE-L and then adjust the S exposure. Then adjust the iso (daylight = 50, night time is 800 or above). Play with white balance and you can make pics that are very different
That's not to even mention wide angle. I've taken some of the best pics ever with this phone and that doesn't even require root.
Cheers..

Yours says US99610h_00 mine says US99610H, and when I used LGUP I can't downgrade. The program crashes when I try to flash any KDZ that isn't the one on my phone, but if I try to flash the 10H Kdz it checks for anti roll back and doesn't crash.

anyway, how did you update toe 10H?
also, if you don't already know, entering this string in the Dialer app will give you the screen I have above to see the ARB status... *#*#244773825625#*#*
just curious about ARB in general... yours is the US996 unlocked version or the US Cellular US996 version?

Thanks for the info. I didn't know about that screen. I updated to 10H using the US996 firmware zip posted in one of the other threads, it wasn't rooted and I figured if I flashed SU behind it I wouldn't have any issues. WRONG. I went to put my phone in TWRP recovery and it erased everything that wasn't on my External SD CARD. I couldn't believe it. Oh and I have the unlocked 996 and not the US Cellular version.

If I upgrade right now, would I be able to root the V20 that t-mobile will send me?

Right now I am using the V10 I love but cant root anymore thanks to the latest update. ( ) Thanks for any info.
Don't let them send you a phone. Go into the T-Mobile store and ask to see the box. The version that is installed is on the bar code.
If it is 10k or older, then you can root. Well, 10k you can roll back to 10j and root. If it has 10p or 10q -- it is a no go.

LS997 released software versions?

I would like to know what software versions have been released for the model ls997. Specifically what the phone shiped with and what was the last version that was exploitable with dirty Santa.

I can only tell you that the last version that is rootable is ZV7. I wrote a post on how to do it. If you are ZV8 or higher the LS997 is currently the only V20 that can't be rooted.
