Note 4 using mobile data when mobile data turned off - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, my wife and I each own a Note 4 and we both have mobile data turned off.
We are both on the same mobile network.
I also have my APN set to one which is not related to my sim to see if that made any difference but it's still the same.
When I check the call logs on my phone providers site I see that they are both logging data usage of up to 5 pence per day.
It's not a huge amount but over a month it adds up to £1.50 or more.
This data is being logged even when we are on our home WIFI
I use a TP-Link MIFI with a different sim when away form home as the data rate I get is a lot cheaper and it allows me to tether.
I have copied a typical example of the call log of my number and you can see that it is logging data and this page it shows a 1p charge. Unfortunately the format gets changed and I don't want to submit a PrtSc image.
Does anyone know how I can stop this data usage or is it possibly down to my network provider?

LTE is the cause

Many thanks for your response elliotn, I haven't heard about this, is there any chance you could enlighten me?

Thanks again elliotn,
I changed Network mode to exclude LTE and after monitoring for a couple of days there has been no logging of data.

GPRS

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a mobile data service available to users of GSM mobile phones. It is often described as "2.5G", that is, a technology between the second (2G) and third (3G) generations of mobile telephony. It provides moderate speed data transfer, by using unused TDMA channels in the GSM network. The theoretical limit for packet switched data is approx. 171.2 kbit/s. A realistic bit rate is 30–70 kbit/s. A change to the radio part of GPRS called EDGE allows higher bit rates of between 20 and 200 kbit/s. (from Wikipedia)

registry key for available and active data connection

hi,
i am looking for the correct registry keys to see what data connection type the phone is currently logged in (i.e. active) or available.
i am talking about the different types of data connection referred to as E, H, G, U, ...
furthermore, if anybody could help me out with the values.
what i have found are the following two registry keys, but i want to check with you if these are really the correct ones.
HKLM\System\State\Phone\Cellular System Available
9 = Edge
40, 41 hex = HSDPA
HKLM\System\State\Phone\Cellular System Connected
8 = Edge
thanx
update:
so far we have got:
Code:
HKLM\System\State\Phone\Cellular System Available
8 and 9 = Edge
16 and 17 = 3G
64 and 65 = HSDPA
HKLM\System\State\Phone\Cellular System Connected
8 = Edge
16 = 3G
64 = HSDPA
still missing:
GPRS
Umts
some more?
please, have a look into your registry. i'll keep this post updated.
thanks
Cellular System Registry
Actually its:
64 - HSDPA
32 - EVDV
16 - UMTS (ie. 3G)
8 - EDGE
4 - 1xEVDO
2 - 1xRTT
1 - GPRS

This info is a little late, but hopefully this info would help us writing applications to detect the data connection state and even use the State and Notifications Broker.

Does Vodafone D2 (Germany) still provide Cell Broadcast at Channel 833 ?

Until March 31 Vodafone D2 had three Cell Broadcast Channels in service: 50 (BestCitySpecial Area Codes), 100 (Index) and 833 (Network Element Identifier).
Since today Channel 50 and 100 are out of service. But is Channel 833 still active or also inactive now?

VZW International Plan: Leaving Data Off While Away?

I'm taking a short trip to Europe (Paris, London) using VZW meager international data plan (not going to contact everyone with new SIM phone # for a short trip).
I want to make sure that I'm not incurring data charges while in Europe. So, in Settings > More > Cellular Networks > Data roaming is OFF. Is that all I need to do?
Right now, my settings are:
Data roaming = off
Preferred network type = LTE/CDMA
Enhanced 4G LTE Mode = on
System select = CDMA roaming mode automatic
Network Access Point Names = Verizon internet
Network operators = automatic

SIM card not recognized at start, no signal thereafter. Cell radio permanently off.

I have an Xperia X Compact F5321, about a year and a half old. When the issue started it was running Android 7.0, software 34.2.A.2.47 and then I updated through the night like 6 times to 34.2.A.2.69 etc until 34.3.A.0.252, the last 7.1.1 version.
No luck there.
Phone is not rooted but it was flashed with UK version to enable fingerprint reader, as soon as I got the phone.
A couple of days ago I started to notice that 4G/LTE wasn't working very well. Trying to access sites on Chrome rendered a DNS resolution error and it only worked after turning airplane mode on and off.
Several hours later the whole cellular function of the phone suddenly stopped working (calls, SMS, 4G). At times it read that there was no SIM inserted (though there was one), but most of the time it stated that there was zero bars (empty triangle).
Whenever I boot it now it will read "no SIM" for a long time until it gets to zero bars.
I got a new SIM card but it's still happening.
I looked into this and I found out about the #*#*4636*#*# and *#*#7378423#*#* menus , as well as some other users with the same issue which they haven't been able to solve, including two in this forum who have not been successful.
Checking out phone info it says that signal is -1dBm and 99 ASU and radio is off.
Full readout is below.
It shows the cellular radio power as turned off every single time. If I turn it on, leave, and go back to the menu, it's off again. It's constantly getting turned off, automatically.
So it would seem the cellular radio is not working, I cannot get it to stay on, and that's why I don't have a signal.
At the same time, since for some periods of time it isn't recognizing the SIM card, it could be that the card reader has become faulty out of the blue.
Or perhaps the baseband chip isn't working.
BTW, if there's an app or method to check hardware level issues, I'd like to give that a shot.
I do drop my phone quite a bit (has a case) but there were no drops the day this started happening.
I don't know if it's a hardware or a software issue but I'm inclined to think it's hardware.
I tried changing the preferred network type between global, LTE, GSM, WCDMA, Unknown, etc. but those choices don't stick and it doesn't help. I messed around with several of those settings to no avail.
I've tried updating the software but not the software repair so far because I want to delay that as much as possible while I diagnose the issue.
Same goes for taking it to a service shop.
Any ideas?

Use Flashtool and flash the same UK fw you used at first, (might work with any one but...), but check boxes in 'exclude' section so it looks like the screenshot...
