Root, Custom Roms and Nav Keys - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

I'm having so much fun flashing custom roms on this phone, but it seems as if the hardware nav keys don't work on any of them. The hardware "back" and "recents" buttons -the ones to the right and left of the physical fingerprint sensor- don't work. I hate using the onscreen navigation keys. Is there a mod I can flash to get the hardware buttons back?

There is no hardware buttons in g5 plus. You can use swipe left and right on fingerprint sensor to achieve what you need. This needs to be enabled in rom settings (most commonly under Gestures).

I rooted my phone as soon as I got it, and don't remember if there are hardware buttons on a stock, unrooted G5 Plus. Are there? If so, do they lose functionality once a custom rom is flashed?
And thank you. I just remapped my fingerprint sensor using "gestures" in custom rom. Huge difference.

Ahahah.

no physical buttons...
just gestures... its not a samsung, thankfully!

Lol

I know there are no physical buttons, lol. Perhaps I asked the question wrong. But to the left and right of the fingerprint sensor, aren't there lights for the back and recents function? Is that only in stock rom?

Nope just the fingerprint sensor. The g5 plus has no sensors to the left or the right of the fingerprint sensor. You can use the same gestures on stock ROM though.

Covering the capacitive buttons

Hi,
I prefer using on-screen buttons over using the capacitive buttons since I am missing the search key.
That means that the capacitive buttons are non-functional and just look ugly on my device. Do you have any idea of how to cover them up so it looks like the device was meant to be used with on-screen buttons?

You can disable the led of the buttons. But you will lose a big space of the screen if you use on-screen buttons!!

[Q] Enable Onscreen Menu Button

I have rooted my Note 3 and remapped the navigation buttons to match the galaxy nexus I came from. Now that I don't have the menu button is there a way (maybe in the build.prop) to enable the onscreen menu button? If not is there a way to enable all onscreen navigation buttons for the note 3? I tried the "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0" approach but it caused system ui to crash. Thanks.
Looking for this as well. Got the same UI crash when adding that kind.
Why would you want to when we have hardware buttons?

I remapped my hardware buttons to match my galaxy nexus onscreen buttons (from left to right: Back, Home, Recent Apps). As you can see I don't have a menu button mapped. A lot of apps have the menu button in the UI but it doesn't show up if your device thinks it has a hardware menu button. So what I am looking for is a way to tell android that I do not have a hardware menu button. Thanks.
could you keep us updated if you find anything? could you make a quick tutorial how you were able to remap the buttons, or does it work exactly like on the s3:

Do the correct icons appear to the right and left of the home button with this mod?

Unfortunately not. I just turned the touch key lights off in display settings.
Has anyone figured this out yet?

Disable capacitive buttons while typing

Does anyone know how to disable the capacitive buttons while typing? I keep accidentally hitting them.
I don't believe that's possible with a stock ROM right now. I'm not aware of any app or Xposed module that will do it, either, though those options would require you to root your phone.

I thought i was the only one. I keep hitting the home button when i hit space. I found that you can position the stock keyboard to pad the bottom so it's not right on top of the home button, not sure for other keyboards

I never even thought of moving the keyboard... Haha. SwiftKey? let's me undock it, so it's a good enough solution.

Switch buttons

Hi,
Is it possible to invert the functions of the "back" and "multitasking" buttons, modifying a file in "system/usr/keylayout", or something like this?
Yea
GravityBox xposed, but i think some custom roms have this function built-in.

I think not, because the symbols are printed on the phone (I'm talking about touch buttons, not the "on screen" buttons)
I didn't find how to do it, anywhere. But anyway, I don't have got the phone, so I'll try when I'm going to have it

On Screen NAV Keys?

Honest question. Why do so many people prefer to disable the hardware nav keys? Is there something I'm missing that makes the on screen keys better?
I don't know, but I would like to disable just the backlight of hardware buttons, without totally disabling them.

If you are rooted is a simple echo command to address somewhere
If you use Xposed gravity box have this option
